Chapter 17: Recovery, Travel, and First Times
Tiberius laid his head on Miko's hospital bed, out cold. He had quite literally cried himself to sleep hours ago. This had been going on for several weeks, bordering on a month with every visit. His parents tried to console him, with little success. They just couldn't snap him out of his heartbroken state.
The boy slept, bags under his eyes as the constant ping of the heart monitor sounded across from the two… until he felt something tighten around his hand, jolting him awake.
"Huh?" He uttered… Before looking at his hand and seeing Miko's own hand holding it. As he looked at his girlfriend's face, his heart raced when he saw her looking at him with a tired smile.
"Hey, Tibs." The girl said tiredly, her voice hoarse from having been not used in over a month. The hybrid teared up as he gently hugged his favorite girl in relief that she had survived her ordeal. Miko felt her shoulder get wet as her boyfriend cried silently into her shoulder.
"I'm so happy you're alright….!" He choked out as a sob escaped him and his shoulders shook. Miko chuckled before coughing.
"Water, please." She rasped. The boy immediately pulled out a water bottle and opened it for her. He took her head in his hand and held the bottle to her mouth to drink. The Japanese girl eagerly downed the water, her throat thanking her for it. After downing about half the bottle, Tiberius pulled it away.
"Better?" He asked gently.
"Oh yeah." The girl replied, her voice sounding much better as she let out a sigh. "Why do I feel… Different….?" She asked as she looked at her hand. Tiberius glanced back at the doorway before leaning to her ear.
"I had to transfuse some of my blood to save your life. You're just like me, now." He whispered, causing Miko's eyes to widen.
"Awesome!" She whispered. "This means I can fight with Bulkhead as a wrecker!"
"... You're not devastated at losing your humanity?" Tiberius asked in bewilderment before shaking his head. "Nevermind. It's gonna take some time for you to recover before you do anything like that." He told her before kissing her cheek. "And I'll be right there with you." He added with a smile.
"Thank you." Miko replied before she started crying as she remembered the trauma she'd experienced. Tiberius didn't even hesitate to hold her close and let her cry onto him.
After she cried for a few minutes, Jack, Sierra, Raf, and the Darwin's entered the room with baskets in hand. Behind them were two other people, a man and a woman. The woman had greying black hair and looked a lot like Miko, who was dressed casually. And the man was dressed in business clothes and looked middle aged, and seemed to have a pragmatic air to him.
"Miko!" Raf exclaimed in relief as he ran to her bedside.
"Thank god you're awake." Sierra sighed in relief.
"You don't know how worried sick all of us were." Jack stated in a relieved tone.
"Yes. You gave us quite the scare." Mathias said.
"Yeah…" The girl nodded before she looked at the two other arrivals. "Mom? Dad? When did you get here?" She asked in confusion.
"Last week, sweetie. We heard about what happened and rushed over here as fast as we could." Miko's mom replied before looking at Tiberius. "And it seems you had a dedicated boyfriend watching over you while you were in your coma." She added with a smile.
"I will never leave her side, Mrs. Nakadai." The boy told her.
"Please, call me Ino." She told him.
"And call me Shikaku." Miko's father added. The boy nodded as Miko decided to sit up… and then clutch her head as her cranium was bombarded with vertigo, as if sent through two migraines at the same time.
"Whoa! Easy. You just woke up. You need to take things slow for now." Tiberius told her as he helped her lie back down.
"I didn't know recovery was so painful." She groaned in annoyance.
"When is anything like this not painful?" Serena asked.
"... Good point." Miko conceded. From what she's learned, just about everything medical is painful in one way or another. "So, what kind of stuff stayed from… Whatever Jenova did to me?" She asked.
"That's, regrettably, where the bad news comes in." Serena signed. "Whatever she injected you with, it caused a great deal of brain damage. You'll have a great amount of difficulty doing your favorite activities for a good while, assuming you can still do them at all." She revealed.
"And your muscles atrophied a considerable amount, Tiberius was able to reverse most of the damage, but unfortunately there's still some there." Mathias added.
"Who is this Jenova woman?" Shikaku questioned.
"The one who tortured me. The worst part? She's an Oda." Miko whimpered as she started crying into her boyfriend's shoulder. Ino and Shikaku immediately bristled in anger.
"An Oda?! In this era?!" Ino hissed furiously.
"I want her dead now!" Shikaku growled angrily.
"You and be both." Tiberius growled as he held Miko close.
"So what will you guys do now?" Jack asked the Nakadai family as they all sat down.
"We're taking Miko back to Japan so she can recover. And if allowed, we'd like to bring Tiberius with us." Shikaku replied. "Besides, I'd like to get to know my possible son-in-law." He added with a teasing smirk.
Tiberius blushed at the implications of what was just said. "We'll have to get a leave of absence from school so we can get our assignments sent to us while we're there…" He noted nervously.
"We'll handle that. Just be ready for when it's time for you to go to Japan." Mathias told his hybrid son. Jack and the kids then looked between each other and nodded.
"We should probably tell you why Jenova even went after Miko." Jack told them.
"So you might want to prepare yourself, this is going to take a while to explain…" Sierra added nervously.
(Later)
Two hours later, the Nikadai parents were processing what they had learned. They'd been told everything. The existence of the Autobots, the Decepticons, the war going on between them, and even Tiberius' status as a Cybertronian messiah. He even showed them his Bionicle masks.
"This is… all so unbelievable." Ino said, her English slipping due to her still being semi fluent.
"And… You saved Miko's life by... making her into what you are?" Shikaku asked, his English slipping too.
"I did. I'm sorry for doing it, but she's alive, and that's what counts, right?" The green eyed boy asked in reply.
"Yes… You're right. I guess Miko needs you more than I thought." The man sighed, realizing that the hybrid in front of him was his little girl's best help to adjust to her new body.
"Is… Is it possible for us to meet these Autobots before we leave?" Ino asked as she regained control of her thoughts.
"We'll kinda need to, since Bulkhead will need to go with you guys to Tokyo. Ya know, to make sure Jenova doesn't try to finish the job." Jack told them.
"In that case, let's go." The aging Japanese woman nodded.
(The next day)
Bulkhead drove up to the Jasper St. Francis hospital as Tiberius and the Nakadais walked out, with Miko sitting in a wheelchair and dressed in a set of pajamas she was given. As the bot opened his doors, the hybrid picked his girlfriend up bridal style and set her in the back seat.
"I still can't believe this has happened…" The girl sighed sadly as Tiberius buckled her up.
"You'll get through it. You have to." The blonde told her comfortingly before getting in his parent's car.
"So… How are you enjoying your first visit to America?" Bulkhead asked awkwardly.
"Not much given the circumstances." Ino said flatly.
"Probably should've seen that coming." The wrecker muttered as he started driving. The three continued to sit in a sort of awkward silence until they reached the base, the two adults stepping out of Bulkhead and Tiberius helping Miko out of him so the bot could transform. Arcie and Bumblebee soon followed, and they were soon joined by Optimus and Ratchet.
"Tiberius, if you would please bring Miko over to my examination table I'd like to do some diagnostics on her to make sure nothing abnormal has developed in her body." The autobot medic said.
"Right." The boy nodded as he picked his girlfriend up and brought her to the examination table. The Nakadais were then approached by Optimus, and then he started speaking to them in Japanese!
"Mr. and Mrs. Nakadai, it is a pleasure to meet the both of you. Though I wish it was under different circumstances." The prime said. "I am Optimus Prime, my team and I are here to protect your world from our enemies, the Decepticons."
"How is he able to speak Japanese?" Sierra asked.
[Universal translator.] Bumblebee said.
"It's a Universal translator, it's how the bots are able to talk to us, while still not being able to understand our customs." Raf translated.
"Well that's handy." Jack noted. As the adults continued talking to Optimus, Ratchet finished his scans.
"Is anything wrong Ratchet?" Tiberius asked.
"Aside from the already identified damage to her body, I'm not picking up anything serious. On a side note, her metamorphosis seems to be complete." Ratchet reported.
"Oh." The two nodded. Tiberius then took Miko's hand and kissed her neck.
"I want to tell you something important when we arrive in Japan." He whispered.
"Okay." The new Bioformer nodded, moving her neck to the side so he could have more access. It was at this moment that the Autobot's computer suddenly got an incoming transmission… Coming from Japan?
"What the…? Why is there a transmission coming from Japan?" Sierra asked in confusion, which was shared by the others.
Optimus answered the call. "Unknown caller, this is the Autobot outpost Omega-1. Identify yourself." The prime said. After a moment, there was an answer.
"I don't believe that I need my skills of Processor Over Matter to know that the person speaking on the other end of this line is Optimus Prime." The voice said at the other end. Bumblebee immediately recognized who it was.
[Prowl?! Is that you?!] He asked in shock and excitement.
"Bumblebee? What on Cybertron happened to your voice? Usually you'd be talking my ear off with that shrill scraplette buzz you call a chatter—." Prowl said before being interrupted by Bulkhead.
"We get the point, Prowl. But how long have you been on Earth?" The green wrecker asked.
"You're here too, Bulkhead? Nevermind. I've been on this planet for quite some time in hiding." The Autobot replied.
"It is good to hear that you're in good health. Old friend." Optimus nodded.
"Yes, thank the Allspark." Ratchet added.
"As am I. But unfortunately I bring bad news. Two of our old enemies Blitzwing and Lugnut have somehow managed to crash here in Japan. The clumsy brutes nearly took out my shelter in the process." The bot said.
"Oh goody. More Decepticons to give us trouble." Tiberius deadpanned.
"Those two lug heads again? I thought we got rid of them the last time we were on Earth?" Bulkhead groaned.
"Apparently not, I'm afraid. I was hoping to ask for assistance in dealing with them." Prowl replied.
"Wait, last time?" Miko asked.
"Happened a long time ago. Way before we met you guys." Arcie clarified.
"Well, Prowl, old friend. As it happens, Bulkhead will be going to Japan to assist one of our newest recruits in recovering from a torture ordeal that occurred a month prior to you calling." Optimus told them.
"New recruit? Torture ordeal? My word, I'll have to ask Bulkhead to explain when he arrives with them." The bot sighed.
"Which is probably going to be soon." Bulkhead commented.
"Then I'll be waiting for you here. Until then, Prowl out." The bot said before signing off. Ratchet then turned to Tiberius, Miko, Ino and Shikaku.
"I'll need the exact coordinates to your home to accurately open the ground bridge. Do you have all the things you need for the trip?" He asked them.
"We do." Ino nodded.
"I got everything I need." Tiberius nodded, picking Miko up again. "Miko included."
"Then I suggest you all say your farewells." The medic said, opening the portal. "Because I think it'd be best if you left soon." He added. Tiberius looked at his parents and friends with a small smile.
"I'll see you guys when Miko recovers, I guess?" He said more than asked.
"Just make sure to take care of her." Jack chuckled. He was gonna miss having him around.
"You do the same with Sierra and Raf, yeah?" The blonde retorted, causing the boy to blush as his redhead girlfriend hugged his arm. Tiberius smiled as he put Miko inside the backseat and Bulkhead drove through the ground bridge, away from Jasper.
(Later)
The portal then opened to an apartment building in Tokyo. It wasn't exactly a cheap one but it wasn't overly expensive either. Firmly in the upper middle class range of prices.
The four stepped out of the autobot as Shikaku and Tiberius carried the bags and Ino helped Miko into their apartment. Inside the apartment was two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, living room, a workout room and lastly a balcony. The furniture was mostly modern with noticeable traditional Japanese furniture here and there. Family pictures were also around, as well as a statue of a Tanuki next to the balcony door (a symbol of good fortune).
"Well, this certainly looks homey." Tiberius commented as he looked around.
"We have an extra futon bed in the hallway closet that you can use." Shikaku told him.
"Which means you can either sleep in the living room or Miko's room. Whichever you two prefer." Ino added.
"I won't object to the latter." Miko muttered loud enough for only Tiberius to hear.
"I think I'll sleep in Miko's room. It'll make helping her out easier." The boy replied, though he swore he thought he saw a teasing look in Ino's eyes before it vanished.
"I'll help you set it up." Shikaku said as he set the bags down.
"In the meantime, is there anything that you two would like to get to eat?" Ino asked as she rummaged in the kitchen. "Because I happened to get several coupons for your favorite Ramen shop, Miko." She added, holding up a sheet of the coupons.
"Oh, that would hit the spot right now." Miko sighed in bliss.
"... What kind of Ramen is available?" Tiberius asked.
"Well the place I really like is Menya Musashi. It's located in Shinjuku, one of the best Ramen towns in Tokyo." Miko replied. "They have over 10 chain stores in Tokyo metropolitan areas. Menya Musashi's ramen is made with the ideally blended soup with chicken, pork and fish broth. The bowls of Ramen can never be completed without generously topped ingredients such as chunks of pork belly and a half-boiled egg." Miko explained, her mouth practically watering as she thought about her favorite noodles.
"So a big slab of bacon and an egg on top of a big bowl of ramen? Sounds good to me." The blonde nodded.
"Alright. I'll go pick some up and bring it here." Ino nodded as she picked the coupons up and left.
Tiberius then led his girlfriend to the couch and laid on it with her, spooning her. "So what did you want to tell me?" Miko asked as her dad left to go medicine shopping for her. Tiberius then pulled out a small box and got down on a knee. Miko was about to ask what he was doing before her words died as he opened the box… Revealing an engagement ring.
"Miko Nakadai, will you marry me?" He proposed. The girl's eyes watered before she grabbed the ring and before said one thing.
"Yes! I want to spend my life with you!" She replied with a tearful yet happy smile. Tiberius smiled as he hugged and held her on the couch as he slid the ring onto her finger.
"I love you more than anything else in the world, Miko. And that will never change." He told her, kissing her lovingly as she laid on top of him, a blanket falling over them from on the couch.
