ELITE FORCE: Season 2 Episode 12
"Villian Origin Story"
The Elite Force begin their quest in locating the remaining siblings, but they need crucial information... information that was stored in Mighty Med and was destroyed in the explosion. If only they had a time machine... right? But surely just a quick jump back won't make drastic changes to the future. Or, at least, that's what Skylar and Bree thought.
FADE IN.
SCENE ONE.
INT - MISSION COMMAND - DAY.
(ROMAN and RIKER are in mission command, blindfolded. CHASE and OLIVER take the blindfolds off them as they, KAZ, BREE and SKYLAR stand watching, skeptical. KAZ and BREE are stood at opposite sides of the group, BREE avoiding eye-contact with KAZ).
CHASE
(Proudly)
Welcome to our top-secret mission command.
RIKER
I've been here before.
BREE
And this time, you're actually welcome. Last time you were cybercloaked as Kaz.
KAZ
Yeah, the sooner we can rescue your family, the better. I'm still not 100% sold on this.
SKYLAR
Either way, the agreement still stands. Once we get your family back, we will be erasing your memory of Mission Command, and of any alliance with us.
ROMAN
(Anxious to start)
Enough already. Let's get on with it. We have to start searching, right? You guys take uptown, we'll take downtown.
(ROMAN stalks off towards the tunnels. KAZ darts in front of him, stopping him).
KAZ
Trust me, dude, that's a losing battle. I've been there.
OLIVER
Kaz is right. If we're going to work together, we have to work together. You're going to have to trust us.
CHASE
And we know it's not easy to trust a new team, but you're going to have to let us take the lead here.
BREE
Yeah, these guys didn't trust us for forever when we first came together as a Force. But look at us now.
SKYLAR
True, but none of the five of us were evil, and we'd all been friends before.
ROMAN
You'll have to cut me some slack if I don't trust (points to CHASE) No-Powers McGee over here to fight some of the most powerful, dangerous people on the planet.
CHASE
(Scoffs)
Please. I'd still destroy you in a fight.
ROMAN
Even with your bionics, I could squash you like a bug.
CHASE
I'd like to see you try.
ROMAN
(Taunting)
That's exactly what your sister said before we turned her into a dolly.
CHASE
(Calm chuckle)
Yeah? You wanna know what your sister said when I made out with her?
OLIVER
Woah!
(SKYLAR runs to intercept ROMAN and CHASE before tensions escalate).
BREE
(Scolding)
Chase!
RIKER
Roman, be nice. They're trying to help us.
KAZ
Okay, new rule, no talking about anyone's sisters!
OLIVER
(Smirking, looking between KAZ and BREE)
That's convenient for you, Kaz, huh?
KAZ
(Glaring)
Starting now!
SKYLAR
(After a beat)
Roman is right. The first thing we need to do is track down their location. Do you two have any leads?
RIKER
No… and with our shapeshifting, they really could be anywhere.
CHASE
River and Raven are fugitives. They're wanted by any superhero authority, so it stands to reason they would be hiding somewhere.
KAZ
Shapeshifters naturally dwell in dark cavernous spaces, we know that. Is there anywhere particular you think they would have gone?
ROMAN
They've been talking about this with our father, we're sure of that.
BREE
Would he have given them a place to go?
ROMAN
Back when he was a superhero, he had secret dwellings all over the world. But they were so secret that not even we knew where they were. He did used to work closely with a few other heroes, but they all - you know - when Mighty Med was destroyed. We're pretty sure they're at one of those locations.
OLIVER
Okay, so we'll just get that list then and start ticking them off one by one? We could make a game of bingo out of it.
RIKER
We can't.
OLIVER
Sure we can! I'm great at spinning the balls and I can read the numbers -
ROMAN
Not the bingo, the list.
OLIVER
Oh… (mumbling) way to kill a guy's dream.
ROMAN
We can't get the list, because we don't have it. It doesn't exist anymore. The only written copy was being stored at Mighty Med in his top secret file. It was destroyed. We already tried. It's gone.
OLIVER
There's no way to retrieve it at all?
CHASE
(Seemingly sarcastic)
Yeah, we'll just go back in time to when Mighty Med was still standing, hide out, find the list of locations, jump forwards in time back to now and that's the job done. Easy-peasy.
KAZ
(Huffs a laugh)
Yeah, if only we had a time machine. That would be good.
CUT TO:
SCENE TWO.
INT. MISSION COMMAND - DAY.
(CHASE is stood proudly by a large chair-sized object, covered in a dust sheet. BREE, knowing what he's talking about, is stood with a smirk, whilst SKYLAR, OLIVER and KAZ stand skeptically next to BREE. ROMAN and RIKER have gone. CHASE sweeps the dust sheet away to reveal a strange looking device: a chair sits in the middle of a spherical frame, complete with levers and buttons surrounding it).
CHASE
(Excited)
We have a time machine!
(A beat of stunned surprise across SKYLAR, OLIVER and KAZ's faces).
KAZ
Huh… well, that's convenient.
ROLL TITLES.
SCENE THREE.
INT. MISSION COMMAND - DAY.
(Having followed on from the scene just gone, the team is all stood by their "time machine": Mr Davenport's Transtemporter).
CHASE
(Proud and smug)
Huh? What do you think?
OLIVER
I think that if you've had a time machine this whole time, how come you keep letting me embarrass myself in front of Skylar?
SKYLAR
Because it would keep happening. Not even time travel can stop that.
CHASE
(Correcting, explaining)
"Time travel" is a really vague term. This is Mr Davenport's Transtemporter. It uses the molecular predictability of the different -
KAZ
(Stopping him)
Dude. Can it travel through time?
CHASE
Yes -
KAZ
Is it a machine?
CHASE
Yes -
KAZ
Then it's a time machine. I don't need any boring science, I just want to play with it!
(KAZ reaches out, but CHASE slaps his hand away).
CHASE
Hands off! This is dangerous technology. Mr Davenport built it, to save our lives when we went on a particle collider mission that was going to end really badly.
BREE
Yeah, the mission was like five years ago, but he actually technically doesn't build it for another two years. We only have it because he had our older-younger brother give our younger-older father the schematics so he wouldn't have to get old making it. This thing's like seven years old right now.
SKYAR, KAZ, OLIVER
(Confused)
Huh?
CHASE
Long story short, our father's an egotistical billionaire, and we have a time machine.
SKYLAR
Alright! So we can easily retrieve the list of potential locations from Mighty Med.
KAZ
Forget the list, we could save Mighty Med! Chase, this is amazing! This could -
CHASE
(Sombre)
Kaz, I'm sorry, but no.
KAZ
What?
CHASE
Like I said, Transtemporal Travel is incredibly dangerous. We can go back in time to copy information, but we can't make any changes to the greater timeline. Even the slightest thing could have huge repercussions.
KAZ
But you just said you used it to save your lives!
CHASE
Yeah, in an isolated incident when we were children. Mr Davenport fixed his own mistake with his own technology, and because it was contained entirely within our own family, the repercussions were foreseeable and controllable. But Rodissius' family will always try and attack Mighty Med. If we stop their attack, then there's no telling what else they'll do. When they destroyed Mighty Med, you three weren't there. And because you weren't there, you were able to contact Mr Davenport and we formed the Elite Force to stop them. We're some of the only heroes left.
SKYLAR
(Understanding)
So if we risk changing it like that…
CHASE
We could risk all three of your lives, and there wouldn't be an Elite Force at all. Bree and I wouldn't even know that superheroes exist.
(A beat, and everyone thinks).
OLIVER
Well, you would know they existed, because of that time when we met on the Island.
CHASE
Right! When The Incapacitator nearly killed me, I remember. (Corrects himself) Well, I don't remember, I was unconscious for nearly the whole time.
KAZ
(Upset)
Exactly, Chase! Mighty Med has saved your life before, how can you say no to saving it if we have the chance?
CHASE
It's not about saying no, Kaz. I'm saying that we don't have the chance. The Elite Force, as we are, is incredibly powerful. Going back in time in-and-of-itself is risky, but if we change anything about the timeline, we will lose all our leverage. If we stop them now, as soon as we can, we can stop anything else from happening. But if we stop their first attack on Mighty Med, then all they're going to do is keep attacking it, and your lives are at risk.
(KAZ thinks, determined).
KAZ
Well, I can't go there. If you send me back, I can't promise not to save the lives of my friends.
CHASE
Fine. Then don't go.
BREE
(Softening)
That's understandable.
OLIVER
I'm sorry, but I'm with Kaz. I can't walk those halls knowing what's going to happen.
CHASE
Well, thank you for your honesty. That's big of you. Skylar? Do you have any reservations?
SKYLAR
(Hardening)
I'll do whatever needs to be done.
CHASE
(Nodding)
Thank you.
BREE
I know how the Transtemporter works. I'll go with Skylar, and you three can stay here. With our superspeed, we'll be in and out in no time.
(CHASE moves over to one of the cyberdesks).
CHASE
Good idea, I'll set the coordinates.
BREE
Should we change into our mission suits first?
SKYLAR
No way. The lighting in that place does not make blue look good, trust me.
CHASE
(Deadpan)
And... normal clothing will make it easier to blend in.
SKYLAR
(Muttering)
But seriously, girl, mainly the lighting.
BREE
(To SKYLAR)
Good call.
CHASE
(Rolls his eyes)
Okay. Setting co-ordinates for Pensylvannia. Longitude -77.19 degrees West, Latitude 41.20 degrees North. Time…?
OLIVER
Two years ago. Rodissius was still a superhero then.
KAZ
(Sadly)
And we were Doctors, and still in Highschool. (Beat). Man, we were regular Doogie Howsers. We were so cool.
SKYLAR
You have superpowers now!
KAZ
Uh-huh, and we also have to pay taxes and decide what to have for dinner every day. (Sighs) I miss when my Mom put sticky notes in my lunch.
BREE
(To CHASE, nostalgically)
Two years ago, we would have been at the academy on the Island.
CHASE
(Huffing a laugh)
Yeah, back before Adam and Leo let the education rating slip to "satisfactory".
BREE
The only person who makes those ratings is you.
CHASE
And it was a lot higher when we were there, just sayin'.
(BREE and SKYLAR settle into the Transtemporter. OLIVER and KAZ, concerned, step forwards).
OLIVER
Be careful, okay?
KAZ
Yeah, come back safe.
BREE
(Avoiding KAZ's eye)
Right, like you care.
KAZ
(Confused)
Huh?
SKYLAR
We will.
CHASE
(Sternly)
And seriously, no messing with anything. No matter how small. One tiny change, even shifting a chair a foot to the left, might have untold repercussions.
BREE
Got it, Mom, thanks.
SKYLAR
We'll be fine. In and out, right?
BREE
You worry too much, Chase. Absolutely nothing is going to go wrong.
(BREE and SKYLAR fist bump, and all at once they disappear in a flash).
SCENE FOUR.
INT. MIGHTY MED HOSPITAL - STORAGE CLOSET - DAY.~
(BREE and SKYLAR appear in a flash. A mop collapses onto SKYLAR and she spits mop strings out of her mouth. BREE grinds the gear of the machine).
BREE
(Matter-of-factly)
Well… it's broken.
SKYLAR
(Impressed)
Oh wow, that went wrong fast!
BREE
(Sighs)
You can't say we're not consistent. (Pause) Blame Chase?
SKYLAR
I already am, girl.
(The fist bump).
SCENE FIVE.
INT. MIGHTY MED HOSPITAL - MAIN ATRIUM - DAY.
(The old Mighty Med Hospital Atrium is pristine. The room is a circle. Everything is white, with a Nurse's Station desks in the centre, and hospital beds lining the walls. Nothing has changed. Nurses clad in their purple-and-black uniforms busy themselves, including one with a lizard's head, which BREE widens her eyes at, but SKYLAR doesn't even look twice at. A couple of doctors, in white coats, tend to patients on a bed. SKYLAR and BREE enter from a corridor, and stop in the centre of the room. SKYLAR is awed).
SKYLAR
Woah… This is so - just - woah.
BREE
(Focused, disciplined)
Does this all look right? We have to focus. The Transtemporter has broken and I might be able to fix it given the molecular polarity, but… (she pauses, looks disgusted) Ew, I sound like Chase. (She looks at SKYLAR, stressed) Am I still pretty?
SKYLAR
You're just as pretty as you usually are.
BREE
(Nodding)
Phew… (she looks confused) Wait, is that a compliment?
SKYLAR
(Not answering her)
Come on, one problem at a time. We need to get Rodissius' list. It'll be in the records room. I remember Horace's password, so I could get what I need. We'll keep our heads down, go from one place to the other, and as long as nothing unexpected happens, then -
(There is a flash, and in the centre of the room, the air bends and shifts, spinning as all of a sudden, a wormhole portal appears and a group of people are spat through, appearing. SKYLAR and BREE see this from behind the nurse's station, and their mouths sink open. A tall, dark-haired teenage boy stands, with a smaller, chestnut-haired teenage boy slumped unconscious over his back. Next to them, a girl with long dark hair, and their brother, both look concerned. All four are dressed in red-and-black mission suits. Additionally to them, two teenage boys, stood either side of them, are looking around. As SKYLAR and BREE see this, their mouths hanging open in frozen shock, this group of six is revealed to be a two-year younger version of CHASE, BREE, their siblings ADAM and LEO, as well as the younger versions of KAZ and OLIVER).
BREE
Is that…
SKYLAR
(Stunned)
What day did Chase set the Transtemporter to?
(We see a shot of the past: PAST ADAM dumping an unconscious PAST CHASE onto a hospital bed, as PAST BREE and PAST LEO fuss over him. Just like it happened before).
BREE
Oh no… two years ago, when we were on the Island. Kaz and Oliver showed up and… this is when The Incapacitator almost killed Chase.
(We see a shot of the past, of PAST BREE flirting shamelessly with PAST OLIVER. Watching this, SKLYAR smirks, and turns to BREE, who looks a little disgusted with her younger self).
SKYLAR
Yeah. And when you were flirting with my boyfriend.
BREE
(Defensively)
Okay, first of all, he wasn't your boyfriend then, and second of all, I got over it after like a day.
SKYLAR
(Snorting)
Yeah, when you realised he reminded you of Chase.
BREE
(Shudders)
Ugh, and it still gives me nightmares.
(Another shot of the past, of PAST SKYLAR, in her "Skylar Storm" pink-and-black, talking with the rest of the team. The seven of them are talking).
BREE
I remember this. You, Oliver, Adam and I went to Paris to stop the Incapacitator. Kaz and Leo stayed to fix Chase.
SKYLAR
(Nodding)
Right before Chase discharged himself and dragged Leo and Kaz to the Eiffel Tower to help us fight. (Pondering) You know, it was reckless, but the Incapacitator would have totally won if they hadn't showed up when they did.
BREE
Keep that to yourself when we go home. Chase is a Davenport - he has a big enough ego without him knowing that he saved the day.
(SKYLAR looks around, and drags BREE to dart behind a pillar, to avoid PAST BREE's gaze when she looks absently around the room).
SKYLAR
This is unfortunate timing, sure, but we need to ignore it. We have a job to do, and we can't risk changing anything.
BREE
We can't move yet! What if someone sees two sets of us walking around the place?
SKYLAR
Um… (she looks for ideas, and then sees PAST BREE, PAST ADAM, PAST SKYLAR, and PAST OLIVER walking out of the room). We're about to leave for Paris to stop The Incapacitator. Let's just give it an hour and then we'll be fine.
SCENE SIX.
INT. MIGHTY MED - HOSPITAL CORRIDOR - DAY.
(BREE and SKYLAR dart their heads round a door of an empty clinical corridor, checking that the coast is clear. SKYLAR beckons BREE and they both creep along the hall).
SKYLAR
All clear. Past us have left for Paris, so we're golden.
BREE
I can't believe that's what my hair looked from behind. And I miss those boots.
(They reach a door, and SKYLAR lifts her hand to a keypad).
SKYLAR
Keep a lookout, and act natural! I remember Horace's password and I think I can -
(The door opposite to where SKYLAR and BREE are stood opens, and none other than PAST KAZ steps into the hallway. BREE frantically hits SKYLAR's shoulder to alert her, and stares wide-eyed at PAST KAZ. PAST KAZ stares back at them confused).
PAST KAZ
Skylar? Bree?
SKYLAR
(Casually)
Oh, hey Kaz. (She realises, snaps her hand to herself, and panicked, turns to face him fully) Kaz! Hi! We're just doing - uh - normal… stuff.
BREE
Wow, that was so natural.
PAST KAZ
(Confused)
What are you doing? I thought you went to Paris with Adam and Oliver. (He narrows his eyes at them, trying to place something that feels off). Is something different?
BREE & SKYLAR
(Quickly)
Nope.
PAST KAZ
(Clicks his fingers)
Yeah! Yeah it is, where are your suits? And Skylar, when did you find the time to put blonde highlights in your hair? And Bree, when did you cut your hair?
SKYLAR
Since when are you this observant?
PAST KAZ
(Smiling simply)
Oh, right. I switched my intelligence with Chase's so I could figure out how to heal him. I'm smart now.
BREE
Cool, well could you go be smart over there? We're busy.
PAST KAZ
(To SKYLAR)
Why are you trying to get into the records room?
SKYLAR
Uh… just to, um, make a file. For Chase. You know, given that he's a patient now…
(The door to PAST CHASE's hospital room opens, and PAST CHASE stumbles out into the corridor. He looks slightly disoriented, but determined. He stands in the doorway, having an argument with someone inside).
PAST CHASE
No, Leo, I don't care, I said I'm going. Bree and Adam are in danger and I have to help -
(PAST CHASE turns and suddenly sees BREE and SKYLAR. He stops).
PAST CHASE
Bree? I thought you went to Paris.
BREE
Uh… (she scoffs) Never mind about me. Are you feeling better?
PAST CHASE
I'm fine. Well enough to fight, anyway. What's going on?
SKYLAR
(Sighs)
Okay, here's the truth…
BREE
(Stopping her)
We need to get some records! For Horace. He asked us to. But we're in a rush. Chase, can you use your bionic eye to scan the files in the records room? (She continues, lying, clicking her fingers as if she is remembering something). Oh, and Mr Davenport called me, and his Transtemporter - remember? The time machine? - It's broken, and he asks if you would fix it.
PAST CHASE
Mr Davenport called you to ask me something? Why?
BREE
(Scoffs)
Don't think about it too much. You're probably concussed. (Smiling sweetly) When have I ever lied to you?
PAST CHASE
Yeah, you're right.
BREE
(Muttering)
Oh my gosh, that worked? Maybe you are concussed...
PAST CHASE
I can scan the records room for you no problem. But Kaz has my intelligence right now.
PAST KAZ
(Sagely)
Ah yes, a Transtemporter. I imagine the molecular polarity needs recalibrating to the specific parameters of the time your father is trying to travel to.
PAST CHASE
(Deadpan)
It's a nightmare.
(SKYLAR types the code into the keypad and opens the records room door).
SKYLAR
Okay, we should be quick. Chase, can you come in here with me? Kaz, can you go with Bree to fix the -
BREE
(Paling)
Go with Kaz? (She frantically shakes her head, darting past SKYLAR and grabbing PAST CHASE's wrists). No, thank you. I can do the records room. Come on.
(BREE disappears with PAST CHASE and slams the door).
PAST KAZ
(To SKYLAR)
What do you think about Bree? She's cute, right?
SKYLAR
(Eyes wide)
You think so?
PAST KAZ
Yeah. It's a shame she's into Oliver.
SKYLAR
(Snorts)
Trust me dude, you're in with a chance. That won't last. (Beat) Come on, we need to be quick. Can you fly - I mean, walk really fast to where the Transtemporter is? Follow me.
PAST KAZ
(Confused, but compliant)
This is a weird day.
SKYLAR
You're telling me.
SCENE SEVEN.
INT. MISSION COMMAND - NIGHT.
(In a flash of light, BREE and SKYLAR reappear in the Transtemporter. They sigh, breathing deeply, but clutching a copy of the file. Everything seems normal, but is eerily quiet).
BREE
I can't believe Kaz fixed it.
SKYLAR
I can't believe he didn't question why it was there.
BREE
I can. He might have had the smarts, but he was still Kaz.
SKYLAR
Tell me about it. (She jumps out of the Transtemporter, helping BREE out too). All in all, I'd call that a successful mission. We made a copy of Rodissius' file without detection, and we put the original exactly back as we found it, nothing has changed.
(BREE and SKYLAR leave the copy of the file on the cyberdesk, absent-mindedly tossing it on a pile of other paperwork, and head to the hyperlift, fist bumping, and disappearing upstairs. But where they have put the file on the cyberdesk, we focus on the paper underneath it. The file obscures most of the paper, and when we focus on it more, we see it's a newspaper article. It's dated that year, that day, and the heading is "SUPERVILLAIN TRIAD STRIKES AGAIN". The image, three "wanted" posters in a row: hardened photos of BREE, SKYLAR and OLIVER…).
SCENE EIGHT.
INT. PENTHOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT.
(BREE and SKYLAR exit the hyperlift, laughing and talking. They look around).
BREE
Where is everyone?
SKYLAR
I've no idea.
(CHASE comes inside from the terrace, not seeing them at first, looking at something on his phone. He is wearing his mission suit, the exact same design pattern-wise, except now it is grey and black instead of blue and black).
BREE
Chase! Hey, what gives? We got back and we -
(CHASE sees them and pales. He freezes, his phone falling out of his hand in shock and landing on the floor. Without hesitation, he lowers into a fighting stance, activating his laser bo).
CHASE
(Darkly)
Get out.
SKYLAR
(Grinning)
Chase! You got your bionics back? That's awesome!
(SKYLAR starts forwards to hug CHASE with the good news, but CHASE backs away. His breath quickens).
CHASE
What do you want? What are you doing here?
BREE
Hey, are you okay?
CHASE
(Nervously)
One more step, and I'll kill you. (Hurt) I don't want to do it Bree but… but I will.
BREE
What? Chase -
CHASE
I'm serious. You have five seconds.
SKYLAR
What's going on?
(CHASE drops his laser bo and uses his molecular kinesis to make a chair hurtle through the air across the room towards them. BREE and SKYLAR duck, terrified, shocked, as it narrowly misses them).
BREE
Chase! What are you -
SKYLAR
Come on!
(SKYLAR drags BREE out of the penthouse. They leave CHASE behind inside and slam the door behind them, escaping out into the hallway just as another chair clatters against the door. BREE and SKYLAR stand there, facing the closed door, panting heavily).
SKYLAR
(Stunned)
So… we messed with the timeline.
BREE
(Snapping)
You think?!
MIDWAY BREAK
SCENE NINE.
EXT. CENTIUM CITY - STREET - NIGHT.
(SKYLAR and BREE pace in the cold night air, stressed. They are nervously looking around them and over their shoulders).
SKYLAR
We were careful. What could we have possibly done to mess with the timeline this badly, to make Chase want to kill you?
BREE
To be fair, are we sure we've messed with the timeline? Chase may have just found out I ate his leftovers.
SKYLAR
I don't think missing Pad Thai changes the colour of someone's mission suit, Bree. Something's wrong. We have to fix this.
BREE
How? The Transtemporter is in Mission Command, but Chase made it very clear that we aren't welcome back.
SKYLAR
(Thinks for a moment).
What about Kaz? Oliver? We should get hold of them.
BREE
(Nodding)
Call them.
(SKYLAR opens her phone and scrolls).
SKYLAR
Huh, that's weird. I don't have Kaz's number saved in my phone anymore. I'll call Oliver. (SKYLAR calls OLIVER and holds it on speaker. It rings, and then OLIVER answers it).
OLIVER (V/O)
Storm.
BREE
(Mouthing, confused)
Storm?
SKYLAR
(Attempting to sound casual)
Hey, Oliver, what's goin' on?
OLIVER (V/O)
Where are you? You and Bree better get back here soon. I can't hold these prisoners by myself. The strong one's getting feisty, and the little one's annoying.
SKYLAR
(Nodding along, confused)
Right. Prisoners… totally. (She and BREE share a concerned look). And remind me where "here" is?
OLIVER (V/O)
I'll text you the address. You never know who might be listening.
BREE
Wait, Oliver -
(The line goes dead as OLIVER hangs up. SKYLAR and BREE share a confused look, but then BREE looks past SKYLAR and sees something)
SKYLAR
What in the world is happening? Did he say prisoners?
BREE
Skylar… look.
(BREE walks over to the sidewalk and picks up another copy of the same newspaper that was on the cyberdesk in Mission Command, the headline: "SUPERVILLAIN TRIAD STRIKES AGAIN", with the photos of SKYLAR, OLIVER and BREE. She looks at it, shocked, and holds it up to SKYLAR)
BREE
(Shocked)
We're… villains.
(A beep on SKYLAR's phone. She looks at it).
SKYLAR
Oliver texted the address. How did we become villains?
BREE
(Shrugs)
Maybe Chase ate my leftovers.
SKYLAR
It's not to do with leftovers! Come on.
(BREE and SKYLAR speed off as fast as their legs can carry them, disappearing in a superspeed blur).
SCENE TEN.
EXT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE - NIGHT.
(SKYLAR and BREE halt their superspeed, slowing to a stop. They look around, concerned. They are in front of a run-down warehouse-type building with the distant soundscape of docks in the background. SKYLAR checks her phone again).
SKYLAR
This is the address. Where is he?
(A side door opens from the building, out into the street. OLIVER exits outside, revealing himself in black clothing. His hair is wilder, and he looks more weathered. He has an evil smirk on his face).
SKYLAR
(Confused)
Oliver?
OLIVER
(Starting forwards)
Hey, sweetie-cakes.
SKYLAR
(Trying not to roll her eyes)
Well at least one thing hasn't changed.
(SKYLAR opens her arms as OLIVER motions to hug, but he walks straight past her. Instead, he wraps BREE in his arms, kissing her cheek. BREE freezes, squirming away).
BREE
Woah! Uh, that's changed. Who are you calling sweetie-cakes?
OLIVER
I know, I know… you're mad. I tortured the prisoners without you. I'll sleep on the couch, I know the drill.
BREE
(Disgusted)
Well I'm glad someone does! The heck is this?
SKYLAR
Okay, focus. Oliver, what prisoners?
OLIVER
What do you mean "what prisoners"? Did you two hit your heads again? (Gasps) Did the Elite Four ambush you again? How could they possibly have bested you without the other half of their team? We kidnapped the most powerful ones.
BREE
The Elite Four? Do you mean the Elite Force?
OLIVER
(Slowly)
No... the Elite Four. Because there's four of them. I know it's not hugely creative but... I guess that's just one more reason to destroy them.
SKYLAR
But if we're not part of that team, who are you talking about?
OLIVER
(Like it's obvious)
The strong one, the little one. Bree's ex-brothers?
BREE
(Paling)
What?
OLIVER
Yeah, and I'm glad you're both here, because Leo won't shut up and Adam keeps trying to break out of his restraints. It's so annoying. Why won't they just get it already? We have your bionics on our side, so we know how to disable theirs? (Scoffs) Amateurs, right?
BREE
My brothers are in there? (Urgently) What did you do to them? (Calling) Adam! Leo!
(BREE starts forwards, but SKYLAR quickly intercepts).
SKYLAR
Wait, hold on. (She turns to OLIVER) Why do we have them captive?
OLIVER
Do you guys not remember the plan? I told you two to take notes in our team journals! (Huffs) Fine, I can tell you again, but this is the last time, otherwise you'll just have to read my diary. Which-
BREE
Get on with it! (To SKYLAR) How do you put up with this?
SKYLAR
(Hands on hips)
Apparently, you do in this timeline.
OLIVER
We need the Superhero List from the Elite Four, and to do that, we needed to hold them ransom. Kaz and Chase will come running and we'll have them where we wanted them. It was Rodissius' plan. Genius, really.
BREE
Rodissius?!
SKYLAR
(Wincing)
Please don't tell me he's my boyfriend in this timeline.
OLIVER
Okay, what's going on with you two?
(SKYLAR and BREE share a look, BREE sighs).
BREE
Okay… (grimacing) sweetie-cakes. Let's just say, for the purposes of this conversation, we hit our heads. Why are we evil?
OLIVER
(Evil smirk)
The Incapacitator saved us, of course. That night we brought Chase to Mighty Med, Kaz and Leo took far too long to get to Eiffel Tower. To this day, I don't know what held them behind, but it was the best thing that happened to us. We fought him, and he drained the hero energy from our souls. He opened our eyes to the possibilities, and even though Adam got away before we could turn him too, we've been on a mission to take over the world. (Pause) When Rodissius' family destroyed Mighty Med, we vowed to take down every remaining Superhero… (Inside, there is a clang, someone distressed. BREE turns, eyes calculating where her brothers must be being kept). And, ever since Kaz and your brothers teamed up, they've been a thorn in our side. All we need is the Superhero list, and then we'll be unstoppable.
SKYLAR
(Understanding, grim)
And that's why you two are together…
OLIVER
Because it was love at first sight, and we never looked back. (He tries to take BREE's hand; she, repulsed, pulls away).
BREE
Okay, I want you six feet away, sweetie-cakes.
(Inside, another clang. Someone punching on a wall).
OLIVER
(Rolls his eyes)
The prisoners are getting quite rowdy. I'll put a stop to it, don't worry.
(OLIVER walks towards the door. BREE superspeeds to step in front of him).
BREE
(Urgently)
Just don't - don't hurt them. (Thinking quickly, swallowing fear and guilt) Don't hurt them. Keep them alive until Kaz and Chase get here.
OLIVER
(Nodding, smirking)
Good call. Do it in front of them.
(OLIVER leaves, exiting back through the door into the warehouse. BREE turns to SKYLAR).
SKYLAR
This is bad, Bree. This is really bad. The reason Kaz, Chase and Leo didn't make it to the Eiffel Tower in time was because of us. We got them to help us and it put them behind schedule. We have to go back and fix this.
BREE
I can't believe we betrayed them. I betrayed my own family.
SKYLAR
(Comforting)
Hey, come on. It's not us, it's not you. Oliver said The Incapacitator made us evil… we're under his influence.
BREE
For two years? I mean, I know I look fantastic in black, but this seems a bit excessive, don't you think?
SKYLAR
We'll be fine. We'll superspeed back to the penthouse and go back in time again to Mighty Med. As long as Chase and Kaz don't show up here, Adam and Leo are safe.
CHASE (O/S)
Hey!
(SKYLAR and BREE turn, and CHASE and KAZ are stood determined, in black and grey mission suits. CHASE has his laser bo drawn, and KAZ balances a ball of fire in his hand).
SKYLAR
(To CHASE, glaring)
How do you have such terrible timing in this universe?
SCENE ELEVEN.
EXT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE - NIGHT.
(Following on directly from the previous scene, KAZ and CHASE stand hardened. They look rougher, angry, in grey-and-black mission suits, and BREE and SKYLAR back away a little. SKYLAR holds her hands up in surrender, and BREE instinctively reaches out to placate the boys).
BREE
Chase, it's me.
CHASE
I know exactly who and what you are. You're a traitor.
BREE
I know it looks like that, but -
CHASE
Enough. Kaz, now!
SKYLAR
Wait -
(KAZ throws his fireball directly at SKYLAR, and all at once, a major fight commences. SKYLAR flips away, and CHASE targets BREE. He uses his molecular kinesis to slam her against the warehouse wall).
CHASE
(Demanding)
Where are they?
BREE
Chase, listen -
SKYLAR
(Fighting KAZ, strained)
He's not going to listen! You're going to have to fight him.
BREE
What? I can't!
SKYLAR
Would you rather die? We have to change the timeline!
(KAZ fires a sheet of ice out from his hand. It lands on the floor, and SKYLAR and BREE slip, falling over and landing with a thud on the ground).
BREE
Kaz, did you just…?
SKYLAR
(Winded)
It makes sense. Oliver turned evil before he touched the Arcturion. Kaz has both powers.
(CHASE holds his laser bo directly over BREE as she lays on the ground, rendering her unable to move, lest she touches it. He stands towering over her. KAZ points another flame at SKYLAR).
CHASE
I am not going to ask you again. Where are my brothers?
(BREE is speechless, gaping at CHASE. SKYLAR looks at her briefly, sees her pain, and steps in).
SKYLAR
I know this is going to sound crazy, but we are not the Skylar and Bree you know. We landed in this timeline using Mr Davenport's Transtemporter, and we're stuck. We accidentally changed the past, we are not villains. We're heroes.
KAZ
That's impossible. You stopped being a hero years ago, Skylar... or should I say, Storm. The Incapacitator -
CHASE
Don't even entertain it, Kaz, it's manipulation. (To BREE) You tell me where Adam and Leo are right this second, or I swear to anything I will destroy you.
BREE
(Her voice small)
I'm your sister.
CHASE
You stopped being my sister a long time ago.
BREE
(Desperately, holding her hands in surrender)
No. No, I didn't, Chase. If that were true, how would Skylar know about the Transtemporter? How would… um… how would I know that you, Kaz, your favourite cereal is loopy-loops, or that you've always wanted a pet pig?
SKYLAR
And Chase, how would I know that you've always wanted to compete in the Olympics? That you hate dogs? That you thought for a while you could end all supervillains by applying an emotional regulator patch to make them good again?
(KAZ and CHASE's eyes flicker with emotion, exhaustion, desperation).
CHASE
Who… who are you guys?
SKYLAR
We're your team. We're heroes. In our timeline, we work together, Oliver, Kaz, you, Bree, and me. (To KAZ) Come on, Kaz. You've seen me evil before, when the Annhialator tainted my powers. My hair has white streaks when I'm evil.
KAZ
(Confused)
That's not white?
SKYLAR
(Rolling her eyes)
It's blonde highlights! I've had these forever! Ugh, men.
KAZ
But, Adam and Leo…
BREE
They're safe. They're at the Academy, teaching the students, whilst we fight Rodissius and his children. We're family.
CHASE
(His laser bo flickering, wanting to believe her, but giving her a warning look)
Bree...
BREE
I'm not messing with you, Chase. I swear. I'm your sister. I always have been, and I always will be.
OLIVER (O/S)
(From the warehouse)
Bree? Skylar?
KAZ
Is Oliver in on this too?
SKYLAR
No. But if you let us get back to the Transtemporter, we can fix everything. We'll be a team again. We'll be heroes.
(There's a pause. KAZ and CHASE share a glance).
CHASE
I swear… if you're lying, Bree…
BREE
We're not.
(In a burst of trust, KAZ hugs SKYLAR, and BREE hugs CHASE. CHASE, caught off guard and with tears in his eyes, hugs her back, tightly).
CHASE
You're really a hero?
BREE
(Huffing a laugh)
I'm trying to be, but you keep threatening me with your laser bo.
OLIVER (O/S)
Guys! Come on!
SKYLAR
You have to help us.
(KAZ and CHASE share a final look, and then nod).
CHASE
Let's go fix that timeline.
SCENE ELEVEN.
INT. MIGHTY MED HOSPITAL - HALLWAY - DAY.
(SKYLAR and BREE, a hell of a lot more dishevelled, and in the same way they did before, poke their heads round a door of a clinical hallway to check that the coast is clear).
SKYLAR
Okay… let's try this again.
BREE
Please, I am begging you. I do not want your boyfriend.
SKYLAR
(Deadpan)
And, you know, the fate of our moral compasses, our entire reality, and our friends' happiness.
BREE
Yeah, yeah, good versus evil, whatever. I'm so having nightmares for the next month.
(BREE starts forwards to the records room door, but SKYLAR pulls her back, hiding out of sight).
SKYLAR
Wait! (She stares at the door to PAST CHASE's hospital room). Three, two, one… and, now.
(PAST KAZ, furrowing his brow in concentration, exits PAST CHASE's hospital room, and, completely unassuming, walks down the corridor in the opposite direction of the girls).
SKYLAR
Alright. (Smiles, relieved) Crisis averted. Let's hit that records room.
(SKYLAR and BREE start forwards. SKYLAR looks over her shoulder and quickly taps the keypad).
SCENE TWELVE.
INT. MIGHTY MED - RECORDS ROOM - DAY.
(SKYLAR and BREE have half a dozen cabinets open as they search).
BREE
This is so much harder without Chase's bionic scanner.
SKYLAR
Just keep searching, we found it once, it'll be here again.
BREE
(Pulling one out)
Wait, I've got it!
(The door to the records room opens, but neither of the girls notice. And suddenly there is a booming voice that SKYLAR recognises. He is a middle-aged man, in a bright shirt and tie, and a doctor's coat covering it. It's none other than HORACE DIAZ, the Chief of Staff of Mighty Med).
HORACE
Skylar? What are you doing here?
(SKYLAR whirls around, paling in shock as she stares at HORACE).
HORACE
What's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost.
SKYLAR
(Whispering)
Horace…
BREE
(Stepping in, awkwardly cheery and charismatic)
Hello! It's Horace, right? Great name, by the way. I'm Bree, Skylar's friend.
HORACE
I know who you are. You're Chase Davenport's sister. What are you both doing here?
SKYLAR
Horace, I know we're not meant to be in the records' room, but we just needed one thing. Please, just -
HORACE
Not the records room, Skylar. Here. At Mighty Med, in this timeline. You're from the future.
BREE
(Unusually high-pitched)
What! (Scoffs) No. We're not…
HORACE
Don't even try it. Those boots are Gucci, and I know for a fact they haven't been on the runway yet.
BREE
(Huffs)
Okay, so you got us.
SKYLAR
(Incredulous)
You wore Gucci to a mission?
BREE
(Rolling her eyes)
Ugh, now you sound like Chase.
SKYLAR
Horace, how do you know we're from the future?
HORACE
My Caduceo power connects me to every hero I've saved. I've saved your life once, Skylar, and so when a second signal for you appeared here at Mighty Med, I naturally assumed you had travelled back in time to get some kind of information.
BREE
(Judgingly)
That's a pretty out there assumption.
HORACE
It was accurate, wasn't it?
BREE
(Nodding, backing down)
Fair enough.
SKYLAR
(Still shaken, seeing him there in the flesh)
And are you... are you alright? And Alan?
HORACE
Of course I'm alright, I'm the Chief of Staff of a Superhero Hospital, and I'm engaged to be married to Bridget! I'm doing great! (He frowns at SKYLAR). Why? Don't tell me I'm not Chief of Staff in the future anymore?
(SKYLAR gapes, unable to speak).
BREE
We can't talk about the Future.
HORACE
Ah yes. First rule of time, don't talk about time. I've seen Back to the Future.
BREE
(Confused)
That's Fight Club.
HORACE
Well, either way. I'm very busy. The Superhero Rodissius just came in with a major injury, and I'm trying everything I can. I just came in to warn you that you can't be here! You're risking a major shift to the timeline!
BREE
(Traumatised)
I think we've covered that, dude, thanks.
HORACE
Just get home, safely.
(BREE and SKYLAR nod, and run to leave the room, file in hand. But SKYLAR doubles back).
SKYLAR
It was good to see you, Horace.
HORACE
Why? Do you not see me in the future?
SKYLAR
(Tears in her eyes, but not falling)
I need to tell you something.
(SKYLAR opens her mouth to tell him, but BREE interrupts).
BREE
Skylar, let's go.
(BREE runs out of the records room, and SKYLAR forces herself to go too. But, she stops at the door).
HORACE
(Looks around at the mess, pointedly, after BREE)
Don't worry, I'll clean up here. (To SKYLAR) Rude friend you have there.
(SKYLAR looks after BREE to make sure she's gone, then scoops up a piece of paper, and takes the pen out of HORACE's jacket pocket. She hands it to him).
HORACE
What's this date? Your birthday?
SKYLAR
You can not show anyone that piece of paper. Promise me, Horace. Just... don't be on Mighty Med on that day. Take Alan and, I don't know, I don't care what you do. Don't be here. Got it?
BREE (O/S)
Skylar, come on!
SKYLAR
(Desperate)
Promise me.
HORACE
(Confused)
Okay, I promise. I'll remember your birthday... geez, you're so dramatic.
SKYLAR
(Nods)
Good. I'll see you later, then. In the future.
HORACE
(Offended)
You're not going to help me clean up either?
(SKYLAR, looking around, immediately breaks her sombre mood as she gives an awkward smile).
SKYLAR
I have to - uh - bye!
(SKYLAR speeds quickly from the records room before she can be made to clean up. HORACE, alone, ponders the date for a moment, and then shrugs, and folds it tightly away in his pocket).
SCENE THIRTEEN.
INT. MISSION COMMAND - DAY.
(SKYLAR and BREE appear in a flash of light, a file in hand, sitting in the Transtemporter. Once it dies down, they look around with baited breath, their hair in even more frazzled messes than before. CHASE, OLIVER and KAZ are standing, waiting, watching them with apprehension).
KAZ
They're back already!
CHASE
Did you get it?
(SKYLAR and BREE jump up, staring around, on their guard. OLIVER grins, stepping forwards with open arms).
OLIVER
Welcome home!
(BREE instinctively recoils).
BREE
(Wincing)
Who are you reaching for?
OLIVER
(Confused)
Skylar. Why?
SKYLAR
Thank gosh for that!
(SKYLAR hugs OLIVER tightly; OLIVER marvels at the contact).
OLIVER
(Grinning)
Whatever you did, this is awesome!
(BREE, with frantic urgency, grabs CHASE by his shoulders).
BREE
Quick! What colour are our mission suits? Can Kaz shoot ice from his hands? Am I evil?
CHASE
Uh… black and blue, no he cannot, and… (Sniffs) Does your breath smell of Pad Thai? (Gasps) Heck yeah, you're evil! You ate my leftovers!
BREE
(Triumphant)
Yes! It is about the leftovers!
(BREE throws herself at CHASE and hugs him tight).
CHASE
(Bitterly)
Get off me! I had two portions left!
KAZ
What happened to you two?
(SKYLAR and BREE share a quick look).
SKYLAR & BREE
Nothing.
SKYLAR
(Holds up the file)
We got the locations. No harm, no foul.
BREE
(Awkwardly)
Anymore. We fixed it. Yay!
CHASE
Why do I feel like there's a lot you're not telling us.
BREE
(Smirking)
We'll tell you in a few years.
OLIVER
How about we fire up this thing and you can tell us now?
(BREE and SKYLAR, with immediate, visceral panic, leap forwards to stop OLIVER from touching any buttons).
BREE & SKYLAR
No!
