This is a very emotional chapter. MisaRae and I both worked our tails off on getting this right. I only hope that we did the characters justice.
T-Bone heard the clicking of Katerina's heels coming towards him. He turned towards her and pulled her into a hug. He said to her, "Ready to get back? We don't want to keep Dark Kat waiting, do we?"
"No, we don't. The sooner we get this file to Dark Kat, the sooner I can get my life back," Katerina said as she pulled out of T-Bone's embrace.
They ran back up the stairs to the roof. T-Bone opened the door first and looked around, just to make sure that there were no surprises waiting for them. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, he took Katerina's paw in his and ran back to the TurboKat. He helped her into the jet. Then he jumped into the pilot's seat, strapped himself in, and started the engines. Once the engines were up to speed, T-Bone set the controls for a vertical takeoff and pushed the throttles forward, causing the TurboKat to lift off. As soon as the TurboKat had enough clearance around it, T-Bone spun the jet 180 degrees and took off into the sky, heading back towards the wharf and Dark Kat's impending doom.
After Empress handed the creeplings she captured off to the Enforcers, she heard the TurboKat start up and take off from the treasury roof. Empress looked up to the sky, and saw T-Bone and Turmoil leaving in the TurboKat. She pressed a button on her helmet and said, "Razor, Caliber, T-Bone has left the treasury and is heading towards Dark Kat's lair. I am going to get my Cyclotron and follow them."
Razor heard Empress and replied, "Roger that, Empress. Caliber and I are about 50 miles outside of the city. We will be there in about ten. Meet us just outside the wharf. We will wait there for T-Bone to leave."
Empress ran back to her Cyclotron. She was very surprised that the boots she was wearing were comfortable enough to run in. She reached the Cyclotron in about three minutes, and got on. Before starting the motor and heading off to meet Caliber and Razor, she reached out to Persival with her mind and said, "Persival, I am going to the wharf to meet Caliber and Razor."
Persival replied, "Alright, mistress, just please be careful."
"I will, Persival, and thank you for all that you have done for me," Empress said.
"Milady, please tell me you are not thinking of doing something that will jeopardize your health or well-being?" Persival nervously asked.
"Not that I am planning on. Please don't worry about me too much. Between Caliber's physical training and Callista's magical training, I feel can handle myself in any situation," Empress replied.
"Very well, mistress. Just remember that I do care about you," Persival said.
"I care for you, too, Persival. You have always been there for me anytime that I needed," Empress said as she started the Cyclotron and took off towards the wharf.
T-Bone and Turmoil were streaking through the sky, heading back to the wharf and Dark Kat. T-Bone said to Turmoil, "I want you to stay in the TurboKat and wait for me. I don't know what Dark Kat has planned after I give him the flash drive with the codes on it, but I would rather you stay safely here in the jet, far away from him, just in case he tries something. I have made him mad enough that I know he wants me dead, and I feel the same way about him."
"I'll stay with the jet, but I won't like it. If I hear gun shots, I am going to run to you as fast as I can, with my gun ready to fire…"
Turmoil was speaking, but T-Bone interrupted her by yelling, "No you won't! If you hear gunfire, you are to get in the pilot's seat and get out of there as fast as possible, and not look back or wait for anything! Do you understand, Katerina, or do I have to drop you off here, where I know you will be safe?"
"If you think that I am just going to wait while you go off like a lamb to slaughter, then you have another thing coming! I care for you too much, and Empress will never forgive me if I come back without you," Turmoil rebutted.
T-Bone now knew that he could not trust her to stay safe and do as he asked. T-Bone asked, "Can I have the flash drive? I'll feel better if I am the one who hands it over to Dark Kat." Turmoil reached into her pocket, retrieved the flash drive, and handed it to T-Bone. Once the drive was secured in his pocket, he slid open the canopy, and just before he launched her ejector seat, he said, "Sorry, Katerina. I care for you too much to place you in danger. Have a happy landing." He triggered the ejector seat, launching Katerina into the sky. T-Bone pulled the canopy shut and muttered to himself, "At least now I know that she will be safe."
Caliber and Razor saw something be ejected from the TurboKat, although they were not close enough to see what it was.
Razor grabbed the radio and said, "Empress, T-Bone just ejected something from the TurboKat, somewhere around Fifth Street. Can you go and find out what it is and secure it?"
"Roger that, Razor," Empress replied as she changed her course and headed for Fifth Street. As she turned down Fifth Street, she saw something falling out of the sky. As the object got closer to the ground, it appeared to be one of the seats from the TurboKat. Empress opened up the throttle a little more, just to get where the seat was going to land before it actually did. Empress stopped the Cyclotron about 100 feet from where she thought the seat was going to land. She waited with both legs down on the ground, staring intently at the falling object.
Turmoil quietly muttered some not so nice words, directed at T-Bone, with her arms crossed beneath her chest, but when she saw who was going to meet her when she landed, she rolled her eyes. Turmoil said, "Oh great. Not only does T-Bone throw me out of a speeding jet, I get to be picked up by who I can only assume is his fiancée. Can this day get any better?"
The seat turned in the air so Empress could see who was sitting in the seat. Once she did, Empress brought her arms across her chest and said with disdain in her voice, "So much for hoping that it was my future husband being in that seat. Instead, I end up having to rescue his captor."
The seat landed, and Turmoil started to unbuckle herself from the seat, while Empress slowly approached on the Cyclotron. Empress stopped about two feet from Turmoil, as Turmoil rose to her feet The two locked eyes as they sized each other up.
Turmoil broke the silence by saying, "So, you are the famous Empress that won the heart of T-Bone. Frankly, I don't know what he sees in you." Then she realized that attacking Empress, even verbally, would not do her any favors if she wanted to remain friends with T-Bone. "Please forgive my rudeness. My envy got the better of me. I do not wish to lose his friendship. What I mean to say is, I am happy for the both of you."
Empress's temper had risen, and had she wanted to claw Turmoil's eyes out when the she-cat insulted her, but Turmoil's apology caught Empress off-guard. Empress replied, "Thank you, Turmoil. For a minute there, I thought you were going to try and fight me to win T-Bone back."
"The thought had crossed my mind when I saw you sitting there on your bike, obviously wishing it were not me in this seat. Then I realized that if I did, I would lose T-Bone forever, since he loves you so much. I wouldn't survive if that happened. So I guess we are going to have to share him."
"What do you have in mind, Turmoil? I won't 'share' T-Bone with anyone!" Empress said angrily.
Turmoil blushed as she realized what her words had implied. "Relax, Empress. T-Bone loves you, and he would never do anything to jeopardize that. Even when we had to share sleeping arrangements, he was a complete gentle-cat at all times. What I meant to say is that he is going to be your husband, and I wish to be his friend, nothing more. I do love him, and if you were not in the picture, I would have done anything to make him fall for me. He is one of the most dedicated, noble, and loving toms I have ever known. I would never do anything to hurt him."
Empress appreciated Turmoil's honesty. Although, there had been that comment about "shared sleeping arrangements". Since that meant they had technically, if very literally, 'slept together', Empress filed it away for if she ever needed to use a little affectionate blackmail. Empress said to Turmoil, "Well, get on already. You have spent the last few days with my fiancé, and I want you to see for yourself how much he loves me the moment we see each other again."
Turmoil walked over and got on the Cyclotron behind Empress, then asked, "What about the ejector seat? Are we going to just leave it there?"
Empress looked at the seat and replied, "We will leave it for now, and pick it up after we get T-bone back. Now hang on." She opened the throttle and popped the clutch. The Cyclotron took off down Fifth Street. Suddenly, Empress made a quick right turn onto Main Street, heading towards the wharf, accelerating faster than she ever had before.
Turmoil clung onto the frame of the Cyclotron for dear life. She had no idea that Empress' driving would be so aggressive or utterly reckless. Then again, Empress' fiancé was still in danger, and that would drive any she-cat to do crazy things.
Empress took a quick glance at Turmoil's face in the rearview mirror. She couldn't help but feel a twinge of satisfaction, seeing her romantic rival so obviously terrified. Empress smiled and gunned the Cyclotron to make it go even faster. She was going to have to talk to Razor about making some modifications to the Cyclotron that would enhance its performance. Empress leaned into a left hand turn, bringing the Cyclotron within millimeters of touching the ground. That move made Turmoil close her eyes and pray that they would actually live to see sunset.
After exiting the turn and entering the wharf, Empress stopped the Cyclotron and turned off the engine. She looked over her shoulder at the petrified Turmoil and said, "You can open your eyes now. We are here."
Turmoil opened her eyes and breathed a sigh of relief. She said, "You and T-Bone are made for each other. Between the way you drive, and T-Bone flies, you two should start a stunt team."
Razor and Caliber had been following Empress and Turmoil to the wharf, just to make sure that Empress didn't throw Turmoil into the river. Caliber watched her friend pilot the Cyclotron with reckless precision through the streets of the city. She chuckled as she saw Empress' passenger cringe with every turn that Empress made. When Empress made that last left turn, Caliber started her descent into the wharf. She really didn't want to stop flying the TurboKat 2. She was just having way too much fun flying it. When she saw Empress stop the Cyclotron, she brought the TurboKat 2 into its final approach. Caliber landed the jet about 50 feet from where Empress and Turmoil stood. Then they all watched the TurboKat disappear behind some buildings as it came in for a landing.
T-Bone landed the jet and shut down the engines, once he had brought the TurboKat to a standstill. He got out, gave the TurboKat a caress with his right paw, and said, "Just in case I don't walk out of there, it has been a pleasure being in the skies with you, old friend." He withdrew his paw and went down the tunnels to find Dark Kat. T-Bone walked through the silent tunnels until he found Dark Kat sitting in the planning area, surrounded by radios monitoring the radio traffic from the Enforcers. Dark Kat heard T-Bone's boots clicking on the floor, and lifted his head so he could look T-Bone in the face before he said, "I thought that you had been captured with the creeplings? There was a lot of radio chatter about the Enforcers securing a tank and several of my minions."
"No, I was not captured, but Turmoil was not fast enough in getting back to the jet. I was forced to leave her behind," T-Bone lied.
"It doesn't matter. I was going to set you both free, anyway. Do you have the flash drive?" Dark Kat asked.
T-Bone reached into his pocket, armed the bombs that he had planted earlier, and then retrieved the flash drive that contained the virus. He produced the flash drive and said, "Before I hand this over, what assurances do I have that you are not going to shoot me in the back as I walk out of here?"
"You are not going anywhere until I verify that the files work, T-Bone. Once I have the money transferred into my accounts, you can leave. I will not try anything," Dark Kat replied.
T-Bone knew that as soon as the virus contained on that flash drive was launched, the bombs in the arsenal were going to explode, as well as the contents of Dark Kat's hard drive was going to be sent to the DA and the Enforcers. He had to be ready for anything. T-Bone threw the flash drive to Dark Kat, who aptly caught it and inserted it into one of his computers.
The computer started reading the files that Razor had developed, and showed a bunch of false information on the screen while it started reading and erasing all of the data on the hard drive before sending all of Dark Kat's files off to the authorities. T-Bone was starting to get nervous as time passed. It would only be a matter of minutes before the bombs went off, and the files were sent.
Dark Kat watched as the data appeared on the screen. From what he could see, about 3.5 billion dollars was about to be transferred into his account when the screen turned blank and a series of explosions were heard from the tunnels. Dark Kat turned to T-Bone and said, "What did you do?" Dark Kat then pulled out his gun with his right paw and starting firing at T-Bone.
T-Bone dodged the shots and leaped at Dark Kat to avoid getting shot at again. He tackled Dark Kat and slammed Dark Kat's arm against the ground several times in attempt to get Dark Kat to release the gun. Dark Kat did let go of the gun, but only after he grabbed T-Bone with his left arm and managed to fire one more shot, that ended up in T-Bone's leg.
T-Bone winced in pain as the bullet lodged itself in his right leg. T-Bone slammed his fist into Dark Kat's face, trying to immobilize him as he fought to get free from Dark Kat's grasp. They both exchanged several blows, each blow hitting its mark.
After ten minutes of intense fighting, the Enforcers burst in and assisted T-Bone in securing Dark Kat. Although, T-Bone didn't fair too well. He had several fresh bruises, cuts, and a bullet stuck in his right leg. That was on top of the injuries he had received the day before when he attacked Dark Kat. T-Bone was a mess, and he was going to need hospitalization. He limped his way back to the TurboKat, and managed to get into the pilot's seat. T-Bone winced as he checked to see if he could operate the rudder with his right leg. He muttered, "This is going to hurt a lot," as he continued to work the controls. T-Bone started the engines and turned the TurboKat around in the hangar. Once he had the jet lined up with the outer door, he opened up the throttles and proceeded to take off.
Empress, Caliber, Turmoil, and Razor watched as the Enforcers showed up to arrest Dark Kat. They saw them rush into the tunnel and emerged about fifteen minutes later with Dark Kat in tow, his hands handcuffed behind his back.
Empress looked around, but did not see T-Bone. She asked, "Where is T-Bone?"
Then the group heard the familiar sounds of the TurboKat's engines off in the distance. Empress smiled when the TurboKat emerged from behind the buildings, while Caliber grabbed Razor and placed him in a tight embrace.
Razor said, "He will be home soon. Let's get out of here before the press shows up and starts asking questions." Caliber and Razor walked back to the TurboKat 2, while Empress and Katerina walked back to the Cyclotron.
Dark Kat saw the TurboKat in the sky and said, "I might be going to jail, T-Bone, but you are going to an early grave." He gave an evil smile as he pressed a hidden button with his thumb.
T-Bone looked out of the canopy and saw his friends waiting for him by the wharf. He smiled through the pain in his leg. Then all of a sudden, he heard a loud explosion and the cockpit was engulfed in fire and smoke.
Empress, Katerina, Caliber, and Razor heard an explosion, and looked to the sky to see the TurboKat wreathed in flame and hurtling towards the ground.
Empress yelled, "T-BONE! NO!" as her whole body started to glow red.
T-Bone was fighting a losing battle with the severely damaged TurboKat. He said, "Callie, I am so sorry that I never will get the chance to marry you. I love you. Good bye." He blacked out.
Empress concentrated as hard as she could, trying to either teleport T-Bone out of the fiery wreck, or levitate the TurboKat safely to the ground. Out of the bright red glow that surrounded her, a beam of power shot out and engulfed the flaming jet. Sweat beaded on Empress' forehead as the TurboKat eventually slowed and came nearly to a halt. Another thought, and the nose of the jet turned upward, parallel to the ground, allowing the TurboKat to gently land on the street near the wharf.
Razor and Caliber ran to the TurboKat as fast as they could. When they arrived, Razor opened a panel on the side of the jet that held the canopy's emergency release, and pulled the lever, causing the canopy to open. He then used the built-in fire extinguishing systems to put out the fire.
Once the canopy was open, Caliber climbed onto the wrecked TurboKat and used a knife that she had on her to cut T-Bone out of his seat. She tried to lift him out of the cockpit, but he was too heavy for her to lift by herself. She yelled to Razor, "If you are done down there, give me a hand getting him out of here!"
Razor ran around to the other side of the jet to help Caliber get the unconscious T-Bone out of the cockpit. After he was freed, Razor and Caliber laid him down on the street and started checking his vital signs to make sure he was alive.
Empress watched feverishly as Caliber and Razor extracted T-Bone from the cockpit. She took a few deep breaths, and then said, "Good, he is out." She then passed out herself from exhaustion.
Katerina saw what Empress had done, and watched her pass out. She grabbed Empress before she hit the ground and yelled to Caliber and Razor, "Empress is down! I need some help over here!"
Caliber turned and saw Katerina holding Empress up, and said to Razor, "I hope that you can handle T-Bone. I have to go and help my best friend." She ran over to Empress, removed her and Empress's helmets, and checked to make sure that she was still breathing. She wasn't. Caliber then checked to make sure that Empress's heart was still beating. Empress still had a pulse, although it was very weak. Caliber laid Empress down, leaned her head back, and pressed their lips together. She started blowing air into Empress' lungs to keep her alive until she could breathe on her own again. After five breaths, Empress started breathing on her own. Caliber let out a sigh of relief, then pulled her friend into a tight hug. She said softly as she closed her eyes and started tearing up, "I don't know what I would do if I lost you." Caliber turned to her fiancée and yelled, "How's T-Bone doing?"
Razor searched frantically for a pulse, and any sign that T-Bone was still breathing. He found a good, strong pulse, but T-Bone's breathing was very shallow. He replied, "He is alive, but very injured. I need to get him to a hospital quick."
Commander Feral pulled up to the scene, and the first thing that he saw was the smoking remainder of the TurboKat. As he walked towards the wrecked jet, he saw Razor leaning over T-Bone, apparently checking for vital signs. He ran over, got down on his knees, and asked, "Can I help?"
Razor was not only shocked that the Commander asked if he could help, but that he was on his knees and willing to do what is necessary to assist. Razor replied, "He needs an ambulance. He has a pulse, but I think that the smoke and fire got into his lungs. He needs to get to a hospital."
Ulysses grabbed the radio from his belt and ordered, "This is Feral. I need an ambulance at my location now!"
Chance woke up in a place that was all white. He was dressed in white linen slacks and a white button down shirt. He looked around and saw nothing but white. He thought to himself, "So, this is what it's like when you die. It's sort of peaceful." He then thought of Callie, and how he was never going to see her beautiful face or hear her voice ever again. He fell to his knees and started crying.
Callie opened her eyes and all she saw was white. She was dressed in a long, flowing white gown that fell to her feet. She got up and heard the sound of a crying tom. Callie walked towards the sound. She walked for what felt like ten minutes, and then she saw the tom on his knees, crying his eyes out. Callie instantly recognized the tom: it was Chance! She went to him and placed a paw on his shoulder.
Chance felt a soft paw on his shoulder. With a tear-stained face, he looked up and saw Callie, dressed in a white gown. She looked like an angel. Chance asked, "Are you here to take me to the afterlife?"
Callie crouched down so she could be on the same level as Chance and replied, "No. At least, I don't think so. As far as I can tell, we are in some sort of dream state. Callista told me that our bond is very strong, and so what one of us feels, the other will. I never imagined that our bond would take us to a place like this."
"So what now? We just stay here until both our bodies wake up? Not that I mind spending time with you, my love," Chance replied, while stroking her face with his paw.
"I really do not know, Chance. Do you remember what happened after you took off from the wharf?" Callie asked.
Chance tried to remember what happened, but couldn't. Either that, or he just didn't want to remember being taken away from the she-cat he loved so much. He answered, "The last thing that I remember was saying that I was sorry I would not be able to marry you, and that I love you. I blacked out afterwards."
Callie blushed and said, "When I saw the TurboKat burst into flames, my only thought was to get you out of there and back in my arms as quickly as possible. I guess I used my powers, and somehow managed to get the TurboKat safely on the ground before I blacked out."
Chance was angry at himself that he had put Callie in a situation where she could have killed herself trying to save him. He stopped caressing her face and pulled her into a tight embrace. He then said, "I don't want you getting hurt because of something that I did. I would be happy in the afterlife just knowing that you are alive and well, Callie. I could not live with myself knowing that you had hurt yourself trying to help me. You are my life, and if that means I have to die in order to keep you safe from harm, that is what I am going to do."
"Chance, you are not leaving me alone. I love you, and once you wake up, I want to marry you." Callie pulled back ever so slightly from his embrace so she could see his face. She then said, "I had this dream last night of all of us going on a picnic. We were one big, happy family. You, me, and our three daughters, as well as Jake and Felina with their son. We are all going to live together happily." Callie said.
Chance choked up and said, "I am going to be a father to three daughters?"
"If the dream was a premonition, then yes, Chance. You and I are going to be parents of three beautiful girls sometime in the future," Callie said.
"Wow, I never thought that I would have daughters. I always thought I would have a son that would act exactly like I did when I was young."
"Nope, you are going to have to learn how to play with little girls. Oh, I can't wait until they do your hair and put you in makeup," Callie said.
"They can do whatever they want to me. Just as long as they are happy, I won't mind in the least," Chance said.
They just sat there and held each other tightly for as long as they were able.
The ambulance arrived, and two techs got out and ran towards the Commander as fast as they could. One of them said, "Back away and give us some room to work." The tech ripped T-Bone's shirt open and placed pads from his EKG onto T-Bone's chest. Once the EKG had been started, T-Bone's heartbeat came up on the screen. As the tech attached more sensors to T-Bone, his oxygen levels and blood pressure joined the other stats on the screen.
The other tech started working on T-Bone's gunshot wound. As the tech started dressing it, he was glad that it was not yet infected and was still rather clean, considering what T-Bone had just gone through. Once the wound was dressed, he went to another bag and grabbed an oxygen mask. He placed it over T-Bone's mouth and nose, and opened the valve on the oxygen tank. The tech said to Ulysses, "We need to get him loaded and over to MegaKat General. Commander, can you get us an escort? We don't have time to wait for traffic."
Ulysses yelled at two officers that were just standing there, "Get two patrol cars and escort the ambulance to the hospital. Leapfrog and stop all traffic in order to let the ambulance pass unimpeded. Do you two understand?"
"Yes, sir," was their only response, before they took off to their cars and waited for the ambulance to start moving.
Razor walked over to Caliber in order to check and see how Empress was doing. He was followed by the Commander. Razor placed his paw on Caliber's left shoulder and asked, "How is she doing?"
Caliber didn't look away from her friend and replied, "She is unconscious, but alive. Can you hold her for a minute? I want to talk to the Commander in private."
Razor took over holding Empress while Caliber got up, went to the Commander, and said, "Can I talk to you for a minute?"
The Commander nodded and followed behind Caliber. Once they were out of everyone's sight, Caliber turned, faced the Commander, and said, "Empress needs to be taken to her grandmother's place. Her grandmother is the only one who knows how to care for her properly, so she needs to get there as quickly as possible."
Ulysses replied, "I'll do what I can, Caliber. Tell me where she lives, and I will drive her there personally."
Caliber nervously answered, "She lives above the antique shop not that far from here."
A questioning look came into Ulysses' eyes. The only nearby antique shop was Callista's. How could Callista be Empress' grandmother? As far as he knew, Callista's only living relative was Callie. The only solution he could come up with was that Empress and Callie had to be one and the same. If that were true, it would also mean Caliber had to be Felina! He cautiously asked, "Felina?"
Caliber removed her mask, revealing her true self to her uncle. She said, "We will talk more about this later. Right now, Callie needs to get to Callista. Alright, uncle?"
"Alright, Felina, I'll make sure that Callie gets to Callista's personally. We are going to have a very long talk later this evening," Ulysses replied.
Felina re-donned her mask and helmet, then they both walked back to Razor and Empress. When they got there, the Commander told Razor, "I am going to take her to Callista's. Callista will know what to do."
Razor's jaw dropped when he heard the Commander say Callista's name. Then he turned to Caliber and shot her a look.
As she lifted Empress with the Commander's help, draping Empress' arms around their shoulders to help keep her upright as they brought her to the Commander's car, opened the rear door, and placed Empress in the rear seat. They closed the door, and then the Commander opened the driver's door and got in. He then said, "As much as I don't like having you SWAT Kats hanging around my city, you all did very well with bringing Dark Kat to justice. Felina, Jake, both of you and I are going to talk later about where this goes from here." He took off, heading towards the downtown area, lights and sirens blaring.
Razor took Caliber's paw in his, and said as they watched the Commander drive off, "You told him?"
"I had to. Empress needed to get to Callista's, and we could not take her there. He was the only one that could do it. He was going to find out sooner or later, anyway. Especially since he's dating Callista," Caliber said.
They both heard the ambulance's sirens, and saw it take off towards the hospital, escorted by two Enforcer patrol cars.
Razor then said, "Take the TurboKat 2 back to the hangar, then head to Callista's. I am going to take the Cyclotron, go to the hospital, and try to keep them from taking T-Bone's mask off."
Caliber drew Razor into a tight hug before they went their separate ways.
Razor got on the Cyclotron and took one last look at the TurboKat, then at Caliber climbing into the TurboKat 2. Finally, he turned his attention to the road ahead, started the Cyclotron, and followed behind the ambulance.
Caliber got into the pilot's seat, and turned to see her fiancé take off, following the ambulance. She then yelled at Katerina, "I guess you are with me. Get in."
Katerina made her way to the TurboKat 2 and got in the gunner's seat. She strapped herself in, while Caliber closed the canopy. Caliber started the engines and checked the flight controls before taking off towards the hangar. As they flew through the sky, Caliber handed Katerina a blindfold and said, "Please put this on. I don't know what T-Bone has told you about us, but until I do, I can't divulge the location of
Katerina held the blindfold in her paws. Before she placed it on her face, she looked out of the canopy at the speeding ambulance with T-Bone in it. With a tear in her eye, she whispered, "God's speed in your recovery, T-Bone." She then slowly placed the blindfold on.
End of Chapter.
