Tina's parents watched in amazement at how fast and accurate Katerina's paws worked a knife as she butterflied two chicken breasts. Once she was finished with her task, she set the breasts aside, and started working on a quick marinade consisting of lemon juice, capers, fresh ground pepper, as well as a few other spices. Finally, she put the breasts into the marinade and moved the bowl to the fridge to give the marinade time to soak into the chicken.
Gary hugged his wife again before he said, "I'm going to shower up, then take Tina with me to get a bottle of wine and possibly some desert for after dinner. Do you need anything else from the market while I am there?"
Meridyth simply replied, "We are going to need provisions for breakfast if those two plan on spending the night here, which I hope they do." She lifted her head to look into her husband's eyes, then said, "I miss having my daughter home, and seeing how happy she is with Katerina makes me feel wonderful. Don't you agree, dear?"
"Yes, I do. I haven't seen Tina like this since Drucila was in her life. I am so glad she bought Drucila's old house old house, so we will be close by again, and who knows? With the way those two love each other, I wouldn't be surprised if they came back from work one day and announced that they have a kitten on the way," Gary said as he watched his daughters prepare their dinner, and every once in a while, steal a tiny kiss.
"See, I told you that my parents were going to love you, Katerina. You were worried over nothing," Tina said as she sliced up some fresh spinach her mother had picked up.
"You were right, Tina," Katerina said. "I was so worried about meeting them and asking for permission to marry you. Plus the possibility they would have told me no. Then I would have been devastated." She put her knife down, grasped Tina with both of her paws, and said, "You mean so much to me that I don't want to live without you in my life. I can't wait to finish our training and move into our house. Meeting Mrs. Fredericks and your parents made me realize I now have a real home."
Tina hugged Katerina and buried her face in Katerina's chest. She then said, "I am so in love with you, too, but you know what you forgot? Our kitten!" She lifted her head away from Katerina's chest, looked into her eyes, and asked, "You still want to adopt a kitten, with me, right?"
Katerina pulled Tina back into her chest and replied, "Of course I do! I want to adopt a kitten more than anything!"
Tina rubbed her face against Katerina's chest, purred loud enough for her parents to hear, then said, "Good. One of my dreams is to hear a little voice call me 'Mommy'."
Katerina stroked Tina's back, and said, "We dreamt of the same thing, Tina. I also want a kitten to call me'Mommy' ." Then she let Tina go, and said, "We have a lot of work to finish if we are going to make this an early dinner." Katerina then leaned in and whispered into Tina's ear, "I think your parents heard your purring."
Tina turned her head to look at her parents' faces, and noticed they were staring right at them. She then asked, "Want to give them something to really stare at?" as she slipped her left paw down to Katerina's butt and gave it an affectionate squeeze.
As much as Katerina loved having Tina's paw on her, she didn't want to have a make-out session in the kitchen, especially with Tina's parents watching them. She grasped Tina's paw and placed it on her lower back, then said, "You can put your paw back there later, when we are alone."
Gary leaned over to Meridyth and said, "Now, I definitely need a shower. Care to join me, my love?"
Meridyth caught on to what her husband had in mind after she lightly grazed her tail against his groin. She quickly moved her tail away and said, "Sorry dear, but the only ones in this house that are going to have any type of activities along those lines are those two. You are still in trouble for calling me 'frisky' in front of them."
Gary was not about to take no as an answer from his beautiful wife. He grabbed her around the waist, hauled her over his left shoulder, and said, "Will you two excuse us for a bit? Your mother and I need to have a little discussion, upstairs." He then turned and left the kitchen, carrying his wife.
Katerina watched as Gary effortlessly carried Meridyth out of the room. She leaned over to Tina and asked, "Does he just carry her off like that often?"
Tina chuckled as she remembered the time she and her mother were playing in the backyard in her kitten-sized swimming pool. "My father deeply loves my mother, and has no qualms about showing his love for her. When I was about eleven years old, Mom and I were having so much fun together, splashing each other with warm water in a tiny pool in the backyard when Dad came home and saw us. Mom and I heard him exit the house and make his way over to the pool. Dad crouched down between us and asked if we were having fun. Mom noticed that Dad had to be very warm in his work clothes on such a hot summer's day, so she decided to cool Dad off. Mom held a small plastic bucket under the water while her right paw tickled Dad's chin. He was so distracted by Mom's actions that he didn't take notice of Mom's other paw until it was too late. As soon as Mom had Dad completely under her spell, she brought the bucket up out of the pool and drenched him," Tina said.
"Your father must have been angry at your mother for doing that," Katerina asked.
"Quite the contrary, Kat," Tina answered. "As Mom bolted out of the pool, Dad wiped the water from his face and took off after her. Since his legs are considerably longer than hers, he caught up to her rather quickly, and picked her up in his arms. As Dad carried her back to the house, Mom encircled her arms around Dad's neck. They both shared a quick but passionate kiss before Mom said to me, 'Tina, why don't you go play on the porch? Your father and I need to have a little talk. We'll be back soon.' Being eleven, I knew exactly what they were going to talk about. So after they disappeared into their bedroom, I quickly changed into dry clothing and left for Mrs. Fredericks'. Of course, I left them a note as to where I went so they would not worry when they didn't find me on the porch. A few weeks later, Mom picked me up from school with a very big smile on her face. I asked her why she was smiling, and she pulled out a small photo from her purse. Mom showed me the photo of the fetus and explained that I was going to be a big sister in about six months."
"Wow! Your father must have been on cloud nine when your mother told him that she was pregnant again," Katerina said as she hugged Tina tighter.
"He was. Mom told him as soon as he came home from work that afternoon. Dad was so happy, he picked her up and swung her around," Tina said, then her voice changed to a more somber tone and continued, "Unfortunately, a few months later, Mom had a miscarriage and lost the kitten. We had a small funeral for my unborn sibling a few days later. Mom and Dad distanced themselves from each other, and were not the same fun-loving parents I knew and adored. I knew I had to do something before my loving parents did something that we all would regret. Even though I was a very independent child, I started acting like I craved their attention constantly. I asked them both to take me to the park, the mall, even though I hated going there. Heck, I even let my mother dress me up! I did anything they wanted me to just so we would be together as a family. Eventually, my rouse paid off, and Mom and Dad started becoming the parents that I once knew again. Actually, they became inseparable when they were home together." Tina spun out of Katerina's embrace, then said, "As you mentioned before, we have a lot of work to do if we are going to make this an early dinner, and if I am right, my parents are going to be famished when they get their butts back down here! Do you hear me, Mom and Dad?" Tina yelled at the ceiling.
The only thing Tina heard in reply was a pair of shoes hitting the floor, followed by the bed creaking. She turned her head back to Katerina and said, "They have lived in this house since before I was born, so you would think they would know by now that the walls and ceilings are paper thin, and I can hear everything that goes on! Now, let's finish the dinner preparations outside so I don't have to hear those two and be scarred by mental images I'd rather not have."
Felina arrived back at Sally's shop about forty five minutes after they left Tina and Katerina. She pulled the van around the back of the shop and parked it. "We have arrived. Let's go and see what your mother is up to, Sarah, and hopefully, she is not going to pass out when she sees your new friend."
They all got out of the van and walked towards the rear entrance to Sally's shop. Chance opened the door and let the females enter before he did, then closed the door behind him.
Sally was hard at work, finishing a dress for a very prominent client. The dark blue sequined material flowed through her sewing machine while she worked the fabric with her paws. To her left stood a sketch of the design Sally made, as well as the measurements of the she-cat that was going to wear the dress.
Inferno focused his eyes on Sally's sewing machine after he felt the heat from the motor filling the air around the machine. He extended his leathery wings and left Sarah's shoulder to take perch on the machine, blocking the light that had been illuminating Sally's work.
Sally was busy inspecting a complicated stitch she had just made when the light she counted on went dark. She said as she lifted her head to look at what she hoped was just a burnt out light, "Now what? I just replaced that bulb this morning. That is what I get for buying cheap crap."
After Inferno landed on the machine, he peered down at the she-cat who was operating it and noticed that she was a slightly older version of his adoptive mother. He then heard her talking to herself, and eventually their eyes met. He let out a small squawk in greeting, which caused Sally to yell as she fell backwards in her seat, "What the hell are you!?"
"Inferno! Get back here! Right now!" Sarah yelled.
Inferno once again took to the air with a single, mighty flap of his wings, and landed on Sarah's extended arm.
Sally got off of the floor, looked at her daughter who now had a scarlet-colored lizard with leathery wings resting comfortably on her arm, and said, "I must be hallucinating, or very tired, because I am seeing my daughter with this thing that looks very much like a dragon sitting on her arm. Please, someone tell me that they see it too?"
Callie went over to Sally, put her paw on her shoulder, and said, "You are not seeing things, Sally. That is your daughter's new friend. Meet Inferno."
Inferno heard his name being mentioned, and in response, he let out another squawk, followed by a fiery breath.
"I'm not feeling well," Sally said before she passed out.
"Mommy!" Sarah yelled as she ran over to her mother.
Both Callie and Felina ran over to Sally, and when Felina got to her, she lifted Sally's head and put it in her lap before she turned her head to Chance and said, "Go find some water and a damp towel."
Chance limped his way over to a small room off in the corner of the shop that held a refrigerator, as well as some kitchen supplies, to get what Felina had asked for.
Both Callie and Sarah knelt down next to Sally, then Sarah asked, "Is my Mommy ok?"
Felina quickly turned her head and placed her cheek over Sally's mouth and nose to check her breathing. Feeling Sally's breath against her cheek, she rose to her previous position and said, "She'll be fine, Sarah. She's probably just a little shocked at seeing Inferno. Give her a little room and she will come around."
Chance soaked a towel with cool water and filled a glass with cold water from a bottle in the refrigerator before he left the small kitchenette and limped back to Sally. He handed the towel and the glass to Callie as he said, "Here you go."
Callie took the towel, then the glass from Chance. "Thank you, dear. Why don't you take Sarah over to the playground across the street while Felina and I take care of Sally?"
Chance turned his head and looked over at Sarah with Inferno curled around her shoulders. He then turned back to Callie and asked, "Do you think it's a good idea to bring Inferno out into a public park? Our yard and section of the beach is private, so he can fly around all he wants there, but that is a public park where anyone could see him!"
Callie turned her head to face him and replied, "And you think a stuffy dress shop is an appropriate place for him to be? It will be fine, dear. The park is deserted at this time of day, so there shouldn't be any problems. But just in case, I'll cast a concealment spell that will make him appear to others as a large salamander."
"I guess that would work, Callie, but I still have a bad feeling about this," Chance said.
"You worry too much," Callie said, then turned her head to Sarah and asked, "Sarah, would you like to go and play in the park with Chance while Felina and I help your mother?"
"Can I?" Sarah asked. "I love that park! Most of my friends play there."
"Sure you can, Sarah, and Chance will make a perfect playmate for you and Inferno," Callie said.
Chance developed a very peculiar look on his face as he walked over to Callie and asked, "Sarah is a great kitten, but I don't know a thing about playing with little girls."
"You had better figure it out fast then, Chance, because I am going to have three of them," Callie said, then slapped her paws over her mouth as her eyes went wide.
"What do you mean you are going to have three of them?" Chance asked.
Callie removed her paws from her mouth, looked at her best friend, then back to Chance. She reached out with her paws and grasped his in her own before she said, "If Callista's vision was correct, we are going to be parents to three little girls. Not to mention, they will all have the family gift."
Chance started to feel wobbly as Callie's news hit him. "Really? Three daughters? Wow! Either I am the luckiest tom in the world, or your genes are stronger than mine." He limped around to where Callie was kneeling and said, "I hope they look like you, though, dear. I would make an ugly girl."
Sarah ran around her mother and grasped Chance's good leg, then said, "I don't think you would make an ugly girl, Chance."
"Sarah's right, Chance," Felina said. "If they have Callie's body and fur coloring, plus your stripes, they are going to be knockouts!"
Chance quickly snapped his head to face Felina, then said, "Just what I need: three daughters who are guy magnets. Thanks a lot, Felina." He turned his head back to Callie, then said, "I need some air. Callie, please cast your spell so I can take Sarah and Inferno to the playground."
"Alright," Callie said before she turned her body towards Sarah and Inferno, and said, "Inferno, please come to me."
Inferno squawked as he left Sarah's arm and landed on Callie's now outstretched one.
She brought him close to her and looked into his eyes. She then said, "This won't hurt a bit." Callie closed her eyes as she concentrated on the spell she was about to cast. Her eyes opened again to reveal them being completely white with tiny lightning bolts originating from each one. As she slowly waved her left arm over Inferno, his appearance changed from his natural scarlet color to a light green, and his wings disappeared, and his spaded tail was replaced with a sleeker design much more fitting for a lizard. Callie's eyes returned to normal once her arm had completed its journey, and she inspected her work. "Not bad," she said as she lifted Inferno up to eye level so she could inspect him further. "He may appear to be a normal lizard, but he still has his abilities."
Sarah looked at her dragon, then asked, "Is he ok? He doesn't look like himself."
"Inferno is perfectly fine, Sarah. Although, I don't know how long the spell is going to last, so I suggest that you two head out and have fun before his appearance reverts back," Callie said.
"Alright," Sarah said before she took Chance's right paw in hers. As she led him out of the back of the shop, she said, "Come on, Chance! Let's go have fun together!"
After the rear door to the shop closed, Sally started to stir. She raised her right paw to her forehead and then said, "I swear I saw a small dragon on my daughter's arm. Can someone tell me exactly what is going on?"
"Sally, I'm glad you are lying down, because what I am about to tell you is probably going to make you faint, again," Felina said.
Felicia woke up from her slumber and felt much better after having rested. She lifted her head and noticed a large glass of water on the nightstand with a note. She lifted her body from the futon, spun around so her feet were on the floor, snatched up the note with her left paw, and read, 'Dear Felicia, drink all of this slowly. You are probably dehydrated, and will need to drink as much water as possible. I had to drag Yoso out on an errand, but we will be back by 2:30 this afternoon. Love, Natsume.'
Felicia put the note down and picked up the glass. She drank all of the water, rose from the futon, and stretched out her back. Felicia looked around the room at all of the photos taken by who she could only assume was Yoso, since he was not in any of them, except one. She walked over to the photo and closely inspected it. The photo was of Yoso and Natsume on their wedding day. They were posed in front of a koi pond, with their paws intertwined in between their thighs. Yoso was wearing a black tux with his long, black hair done in a low-hanging ponytail. He had a smile on his face a mile wide. Natsume was also smiling. Her hair was done up in a tight traditional bun and secured with two long needles. She was wearing a white silk kimono with matching haori, and the entire ensemble was accented by vibrant red silk. Felicia backed away from the photo, then said, "One day I hope to find someone who will love me just like my master loves his wife," and left the room to head to the dojo to change into something that she could get a decent workout in.
Felicia changed into a pair of gray running shorts, a matching top, and a pair of tights to support her leg muscles. She stretched out in the empty dojo before going out for a run along the lake in a neighboring park. Once she was outside the dojo, she locked the doors and took off towards the park at a semi-decent pace, but once she entered the park, she let herself go and ran as fast as she possibly could.
Chance and Sarah made it to the playground, but it wasn't too long before Sarah let go of his paw and ran off to the sandbox. Chance watched as she built all sorts of things with her tiny paws without a care in the world. He then found a bench nearby where he could sit and keep an eye on Sarah, as well as Inferno.
After about half an hour, Sarah finished playing in the sand box and ran back over to Chance. She then asked, "Chance, will you push me on the swing, please?"
"Sure thing, Sarah. I would be more than happy to," Chance said, right before he got up and took Sarah's paw in his. They walked over to the swing set and Chance lifted Sarah onto one of the swings. He then walked behind her and asked, "Are you ready?"
Sarah held onto the chains that supported the swing with all of her might, then said, "I'm ready."
Chance grasped the edge of the swing with his paws, pulled back, then gave it a firm push, sending Sarah and Inferno into the air. The swing and its occupants soon lost velocity and started to swing back towards Chance. He caught the swing in his paws and gave it a firmer shove, sending the swing back into the air.
Felicia rounded the lake, running faster than she thought possible while barely making a sound with her feet as they fell against the pavement. She was determined to test two things with this run. and two, to see if she could maintain some level of stealth while running, just as her master had taught her. She had achieved her goals on both fronts. That was when she noticed a familiar tabby tom, pushing a little kitten on the swings. She slowed her pace to a fast walk and made her way over to the swings.
"Higher!" Sarah cried.
"Ok, just hang on tight," Chance said as he pushed Sarah with all of his might.
"Are you sure you should be doing that, Mr. Furlong?" Felicia asked.
Chance moved his eyes to look in the direction of the very feminine voice he heard. He then asked, "Do I know you?" right before he gave Sarah another push.
"Yes, you do," Felicia answered. "I'm almost positive that Dr. Feldman and Dr. Earnheardt would not be pleased if they saw you defying their orders like this."
Chance caught Sarah as the swing came back down, then he turned to the she-cat and said, "I feel fine, miss, and my leg is healing nicely. But that still doesn't answer my question as to who you are?"
"I work exclusively with Dr. Feldman at the hospital, Mr. Furlong, as his charge nurse, as well as his assistant. I'm sure that Jake must have mentioned me at least once, especially after I made such a good impression on him," Felicia said.
As soon as the words left her mouth, Chance knew that she must be the newest member of SWAT Jake had mentioned. He then said, "He mentioned that you are a tenth degree black belt, as well as an expert with metal. However, just by the look of you, I don't believe it. Prove me wrong, miss."
Felicia looked around for something to show off her skills with, and found it in an old balance beam that had been marked for removal. "You want me to prove to you that I can do what I say?" Felicia asked as she cocked her hips.
"Yes, I do," Chance said.
"Alright then, see that balance beam over in the corner of the playground? Watch closely," Felicia said, then she sauntered over to the balance beam. She examined the heavy wooden beam that spanned two steel uprights and found the center. Once she knew where to strike, she looked around to make sure no one else was watching, then drew her right arm back over her head and swiftly brought it down. When the side of her paw connected with the wood, it let out a mighty crack, but still seemed to remain intact. Felicia looked at the beam for a second, and blew it a kiss. It then fell to the ground in two pieces. back towards Chance and Sarah with her head held high and a sway in her hips. She stopped in front of them and said, "The name is Felicia Harrison aka Sensei, Mr. Furlong aka T-Bone."
