The next morning, Felicia woke up in a strange bedroom. She looked around and noticed several sets of weights littering the room as well as a few framed posters of Ballet Dancers. She slipped out of the bed, and pulled on a button down shirt that was quite large on her. She straightened out her hair with her fingers before she left the room.
Mark was already awake and was satisfied lying on his back with Lisa laying on his left side, still completely asleep. He turned his head to the left and watched her sleep with a very peaceful and content look on her face. "What ever did I do to deserve to have a she-cat like you fall in love with me I will never know." He kissed her before he said, "But I'm so glad that you did and I love you, my beautiful bride." He slipped out of their shared bed and pulled on a pair of gray sweatpants as well as a sleeveless shirt before leaving the bedroom.
Mark gently closed the door to the bedroom and went to the kitchen to start breakfast for all three of them. As he passed through the living room, he smelled the coffee brewing, but he didn't remember setting up the machine the night before. He entered the kitchen and noticed Felicia standing by the island, cutting up an onion and had a green and red pepper sitting to the left of the cutting board, waiting to be diced. He watched her work for a few seconds before he said, "Those are some impressive knife skills Felicia, did you sleep well?"
Felicia stopped cutting up the onion and set the knife down on the counter top. She turned her head to Mark and answered, "No, I didn't Mark. I kept thinking those two toms were going to come after me and do things to me that I wouldn't want. How did I end up here anyhow?"
Mark went over to the cabinet by the sink and removed three beige ceramic mugs from the middle shelf. He set two of the mugs down next to the sink and took the third one over to the Coffee maker. He poured himself a cup, took a sip, and scowled at the dark liquid before he asked, "You don't know how to make coffee do you?"
"Is it that bad?" Felicia asked as her tail drooped.
Mark poured the mug and the pot of coffee down the sink before he answered, "Felicia, please don't take this the wrong way, but that stuff could strip paint. I appreciate you trying, but leave the coffee to me and Lisa." He quickly cleaned the machine and set it up to make a fresh pot as he answered her question, "After we left Callista's building, you were so distraught and were pleading not to be left alone. Lisa and I brought you back here so you would not be alone when you woke up. Felicia, you are family to us and you can stay here for as long as you need to. Lisa and I want our confident sister who is a mistress of the sword back."
"Mark, as much as I appreciate the offer, I need to get back to the dojo. I have classes to teach as well as my own training to attend to," Felicia said.
Mark went over to her and hugged Felicia tightly. He then said, "Our door is always open Felicia, if you feel the need, please come back."
Felicia hugged him back and said, "I appreciate the offer Mark. However, I need to get over what happened to me last night and let the experience make me stronger."
"Just as long as it doesn't change you Felicia," Mark said. "We care for you, more than you probably know."
"I know you do, big brother and thank you for being here for me when I needed it," Felicia said.
Mark stroked her platinum blonde hair with his right paw and said, "You are welcome Felicia."
"Would someone please explain to me why my husband is affectionately holding one of our friends in my kitchen?" Lisa asked as her tail snapped back and forth in agitation.
Evelyn woke up and left her bed. She was excited that she was going with her mother and the queen to go dress shopping. She was also enthusiastic about seeing her friend Apprentice again.
As Evelyn moved around her room, Spencer stirred, scratched his right ear with his right paw, then asked, "Good morning Evelyn, what has you all abuzz this morning?"
Evelyn stopped what she was doing and went over to Spencer, then hugged him tightly before she said, "I get to spend the day out with my mommy and the queen. We are going shopping!"
"That does sound exiting Evelyn," Spencer said as he rose from the floor. He then asked, "Would you like a ride on my back?
"Yes Spencer, I would love to," Evelyn said as she let go of his neck.
Spencer lowered himself to the floor so Evelyn could easily climb onto his back and wrap her arms around his neck. Once she was situated, he rose to his feet, then turned to look out of her window. Spencer noticed that it was a gorgeous morning and quickly changed his mind about how he was going to deliver Evelyn to the kitchen. "I have a better idea Evelyn, have you ever flown with my cousin?"
"No, Persival hasn't taken me flying, why?" She asked.
"Would you like to go for a quick jaunt around the yard?" Spencer asked as he opened his wings and gave them a test flap.
Evelyn knew her yard was close to her neighbors yards, so she also knew that there would be a good chance they would be spotted by one of the neighbors if Spencer and her took flight. "Are you sure this is a good idea Spencer?" Evelyn asked.
"No, this is not a good idea Evelyn," Spencer said. "This idea is very risky, and is going to be lot's of fun!" He ran to the window and darted out of it with his wings tight to his body. But as soon as he was clear of the house, he snapped his large feathery wings open and with a mighty flap, he took off into the sky.
Evelyn felt the wind whipping through her hair and she held on tighter to Spencer's neck.
Spencer felt her tightening her grip around him and he turned his head so he could check and make sure she was alright. He looking at her face and noticed that her eyes were shut tightly. He then said, "I have you Evelyn. I promise you are completely safe with me. Come on princess, open your eyes and enjoy the view."
Evelyn slowly opened her eyes and saw the tree lined streets below them as well as the billowy clouds above them. "This is amazing Spencer." Evelyn stated.
Spencer turned his head again to face the skies ahead of him, then said, "Yes it is Evelyn. Would you care to try something a little more, reckless?"
Evelyn leaned into Spencer a little more, then answered, "Sure."
Spencer smiled then said, "Alright, hang on tight cause here we go!" He folded his wings and went into a steep dive while spiraling to the left.
Evelyn was smiling ear to ear as her stomach performed back flips inside of her and her hair and tail whipped behind her. She eventually said, "This is so much fun! Keep going Spencer!"
Spencer secretly hoped Evelyn would ask him to do just that. As they got closer to the ground, he snapped his wings open, brought them out of the steep dive, and rose back into the sky before leveling off about a thousand feet in the air. Spencer craned his head to the left so he could try to look at Evelyn's face and asked, "Did you enjoy yourself, princess?"
Evelyn wrapped her arms tighter around Spencer's neck, cuddled into him, and replied, "Yes I did Spencer, thank you my knight."
Upon hearing Evelyn calling him her knight, his heart jumped in his chest. Ever since he grew up, Spencer had been considered the 'Black Sheep' of the family and he resided to himself that he was going to be alone. Now he had this little girl that showed affection for him instead of calling him useless and rude. Spencer brought them in for a gentle landing in the back yard of their home and walked towards the kitchen's door. He lightly scratched the door with his right front paw in order to get Helen's attention.
Helen was busy making breakfast for her family when she heard the light scratching on her kitchen's door. She stopped what she was doing, put the spoon down she held in her right paw, and said as she walked over to the door, "Who the heck is scratching my back door at this hour of the morning?" Helen looked out of the window of the door and saw her daughter riding on Spencer's back. Her hair was completely disheveled from what appeared to be an impromptu flight. She opened the door and said, "I was expecting both of you to use the interior stairs, not coming through the back yard."
Spencer walked past Helen and when he was standing by the kitchen's island, he stopped, turned to face her, and said, "That would be my fault Mrs. Higgins."
"Mommy, please don't be mad at Spencer, he only wanted me to have fun," Evelyn said.
"Oh, what type of fun did you two have that would cause me to be angry?" Helen asked.
"I took Evelyn on a morning fight around the neighborhood Mrs. Higgins," Spencer answered.
"You did what!?" Helen asked before she briskly walked over to Evelyn and snatched her from Spencer's back. She held her daughter tightly in her arms before she shot Spencer a censuring glare and asked, "Are you out of your mind!? What would happen if you were spotted? Do you have any idea the trouble you could have caused this family?"
Spencer took a defensive posture and slightly opened his wings before he answered, "I would never cause this family any trouble! I have finally found a place that I could call my home as well as a family that cares for me! No one has cared for me before, not even my own family! Your daughter makes me feel warm and welcomed and as much as I didn't want to come here at first, I'm glad I did. I was up most of the night watching Evelyn peacefully sleep not because it is my job, I did it because I care deeply for her! So when Evelyn wants to have a little fun with her knight, I'm going to give her as much fun as she wants!"
Helen put Evelyn down then went over to Spencer. She slowly brought her left paw up to pet him and waited patiently for Spencer to respond, one way or another.
Spencer noticed Helen's movements and realized that Helen didn't mean to yell at him. She was only thinking of her family and their safety. His facial features changed from those of an angry puma to a remorseful one, closed his wings, and brought his head towards her paw. As his head connected with her paw, he said, "I promise that I would give my life up in order to protect Evelyn. She is one special kitten. My apologies for acting the way that I did."
Helen eventually smiled and scratched his dense fur with her claws as she said, "Evelyn means the world to me Spencer and let me tell you why." She lowered herself tother floor, motioned for Evelyn to join her, which she did, wrapped her left arm around her daughter, then said, "When Michael and I got married, we wanted to start a family as soon as possible. I became pregnant during our honeymoon. A few months later, I started having pains as well as very heavy bleeding. Michael took me to the OB and we were told that I was having a miscarriage as well as the fetus was not mature enough to survive outside of the womb. We both were devastated of course. After the procedure was completed, we were told that I had a very slim chance of being able to carry a kitten to full term. Our dreams of having a family were dashed in a single moment."
"Mommy, I could have had a big brother or sister?" Evelyn asked after she looked at Helen.
Helen looked at her daughter, then answered, "Yes, you could have had a brother or sister and now, hopefully you will have one of each." She smiled and kissed Evelyn before she continued her tale, "When I became pregnant again, we went out and searched for the best doctors we could afford to watch over me and six moths later, I gave birth to a very beautiful girl."
"Wasn't Evelyn a little pre-mature to be delivered that early?" Spencer asked.
"She was delivered pre-mature Spencer by about five weeks. The doctors took her to a Neo-Natal Intensive Care unit right after she was born. I didn't even get to hold her before they took her away. Evelyn spent the first few weeks of her life in an incubator with wires and tubes attached to her little body. Michael and I visited her every day and were content knowing she was alive and was going to eventually come home with us. On the day Evelyn was released from the hospital, we set the house up with everything a baby girl cold want or need. We met Michael's mother at the hospital and went upstairs to bring home our daughter. When she saw Evelyn for the first time, she broke down and cried tears of happiness just from seeing her granddaughter and when she finally was able to hold her, Michael and I thought we would not get Evelyn back. They bonded instantly which I am glad for. My grandparents wanted nothing to do with me. They called me a Devil's spawn since I had magical abilities and they were very religious." Helen moved a stray hair from her face then said, "Well enough about the bad times, don't we have a date with the queen in a few minutes Evelyn?"
"Yes we do mommy, I was having so much fun flying with Spencer, that I almost forgot," Evelyn said.
Helen rose from the floor holding Evelyn in her arms, then said, "Well then, the princess and her knight must be fed before the queen arrives. Care to help me make breakfast Evelyn?"
"Yes mommy, but only after I do this first," Evelyn answered. She wriggled out of her mother's grasp, ran over to Spencer, then hugged him tightly, burying her face in his neck. She then said, "I love you, my knight."
Spencer was surprised by Evelyn's embrace, then telling him and she loved him. It warmed his heart and soul and he loved that feeling. Spencer rubbed her neck with his cheek, then said, "Your knight loves you too, my princess." He lifted his head to face Helen, then said, "As I said before, I will give my life for her, as well as you and Michael. Nothing is going to harm this family while I am around."
"That is good to know Spencer, I was sort of worried that you wouldn't fit in here," Callista said after she suddenly appeared in their kitchen.
Spencer bowed to her and said, "Your majesty."
Evelyn started to bow to Callista. But she was stopped by Callista as she said, "Remember what we discussed in your grandmother's shop Evelyn?
Evelyn remembered that Callista preferred a hug to being bowed to. She went over to the queen then hugged her tight.
Spencer let his eyes wander over Callista and noticed she was wearing a pair of skinny jeans, a blue sweater, and a pair of simple flats on her feet. Never less, she still looked as regal as ever. "Might I say, you still look as young and as beautiful as my mistress, your majesty."
Callista walked over to Spencer, gave him a good scratch behind his left ear, as she said, "You might not be as formal as Persival is Spencer. But you are a charmer; just like he is. You mentioned that you have been alone? Well, I have a good feeling that if you keep behaving like you are with Evelyn, you might, and I mean might be able to find a female to settle down with and have a family of your own."
Spencer perked up and his tail moved rapidly back and forth in excitement. He asked, "Really? There is a female out there who is going to want me?"
"Of course there is Spencer. There is someone for everyone, you have to find each other though," Callista said.
Spencer thought how great it would be to have a female to love him as well as a few cubs flying around. He eventually said, "I would like that my queen, will you be willing to help me find her?"
"Of course I will Spencer," Callista replied. "On one condition though."
"And what would that be?" Spencer asked.
"You have to be on your best behavior at all times," Callista answered.
"If that is what it takes, then I will do it Callista!" Spencer said.
"I had a feeling you were going to be great companion Spencer," Callista said. She then turned to Helen and said, "Once you two finish breakfast, we can get going."
"Certainly Callista. May I offer you something?" Helen asked.
"I could use a cup of tea Helen, if you don't mind?" Callista responded.
"Not at all, actually I could use a paw in the kitchen. My daughter needs to do her hair and Spencer could use a brushing, if he is going to come with us today," Helen said.
Spencer lifted his head a little further, then asked, "You want me to go with you ladies?"
"Why not Spencer? After all, we are going to need a male's opinion to our choices in attire," Helen answered.
"In that case, come on princess. Let's make ourselves presentable while your mother and the queen make a succulent feast for us!" Spencer said then ushered Evelyn back to her room to get ready.
Evelyn returned to the kitchen, now wearing a light blue dress with white lace adorning the hem of the skirt as well as her sleeves. Her hair had a small red bow in to just below her right ear. She was followed by Spencer who had his fur brushed out and was wearing a bow tie that matched Evelyn's bow. He walked into the kitchen and asked, "Does the princess and her knight look presentable to the queen as well as the mistress of the house?"
Helen looked at her daughter then at Spencer then responded, "You both look very nice Spencer."
Spencer bowed to Helen and said, "Thank you milady, might I say you both look gorgeous, especially when your faces are dusted with flour."
Both Helen and Callista looked at each other, discovered that while they were making breakfast, they managed to get flour onto their cheeks. They broke out in laughter as they realized how they must have appeared to Evelyn and Spencer.
Everyone ate something and cleaned up the mess before Callista and Helen examined Spencer.
"So Helen, I'm thinking of shrinking him to about a tenth of his size and Evelyn can carry him around like a toy. Callie used to do that with Persival," Callista said.
"Evelyn was never one to carry toys with her Callista," Helen said as she tapped her right fore finger to her right cheek. She then asked, "Spencer, how do you feel about being a dog for the day?"
Spencer's eyes went wide and ran out of the kitchen to hide in the living room. He grabbed a large throw from the back of the couch and threw it over himself in attempt to hide.
Evelyn ran after Spencer and saw the tip of his tail round the corner of the couch. She slowly walked around the corner and saw a plaid throw, trembling behind the couch. She lifted a corner of the throw and asked, "Spencer, you ok?"
Spencer lifted his head from his front legs, turned it out his left, and said, "Please don't let them turn me into a dog."
Evelyn crouched down, crawled over to where Spencer's head was, hugged him tightly, and said, "I won't let them turn you into a dog Spencer. I love you just the way you are."
Helen and Callista entered the living room and saw Evelyn on the floor hugging a partially covered Spencer. They both went over to Evelyn, fell to their knees, and Helen put her left arm around her daughter and her right around Spencer. She asked, "Spencer, what caused you to have that type of reaction?"
Spencer snuggled in tighter to Evelyn, using her as a safety blanket before he answered, "When I was a young cub, I wandered away from my parents and into the woods that surrounded our home. I got lost among the trees very quickly. I mewed in attempt to call for my parents, but failed since I was so small at the time. As I wandered trying to find my way back, I heard some deep growling from behind me. I stopped and turned my head to see what is was. But before I could react, I was attacked by a bunch of feral dogs. I was bitten, clawed at, and was probably going to be eaten. Then my father broke through the thick woods, with his large wings extended, his head lowered, and he was growling and snarling at the dogs. He took one look at the way I looked and he charged the dogs to get to me. The dogs tried to protect their meal but my father was stronger and faster. He defended me and kept me safe from the dogs as they attacked him. After the dogs dispersed, he turned around, folded his wings tightly to his body, and walked over to me with all of his emotions clearly shown on his face. In his deep baritone voice he said, 'Spencer, your mother is worried sick about you, and so was I.' He picked me up by the scruff of my neck in his strong jaw and flew me back home. That is why I acted the way I did before, I'm scared of dogs. I know, its quite funny to think that a fully grown puma is afraid of dogs, but since I was very young when I was attacked, it sort of scarred me."
"Spencer, I had no idea that happened to you," Helen said. "I'm so sorry for even thinking of doing that to you."
"Its alright Helen, think of it as payback for me hitting on you," Spencer said.
"I'm glad you two worked that out but it still doesn't solve the problem of how to get Spencer to Sally's without being seen," Callista said.
"Aren't we all sorceresses mommy? Can't we zap ourselves to Sally's?" Evelyn asked.
"We could Evelyn," Callista said. "Actually, that is not a bad idea." She looked at her friends then said, "Here we go!" Callista raised her arms above her head, encircled all of them in white light, and brought them all to the back alley of Sally's shop.
