Asher Wolke and Jerome Martel had only been married a month when they decided to start fresh somewhere new. Living in San Jose had been exciting, but both were ready for a change, somewhere with a small-town vibe and less of the daily hustle. After some debate and a map covered in hopeful post-it notes, they landed on a small town they'd seen mentioned in an article called Small-Town USA. Riverdale.
Their new apartment was quaint and a little rustic, but it had charm. There was a wide window overlooking Riverdale's quaint main street, perfect for people-watching, and enough space for the life they were ready to build together. As they unpacked their things, a new chapter in their lives seemed almost tangible, unfolding between the cardboard boxes and fresh white walls. For Asher, this was the chance to build a community and start fresh, leaving behind the hospital stresses. For Jerome, it was an opportunity to explore life beyond California and find new adventures in an unknown place.
A knock at the door broke their unpacking silence. Asher, already in the kitchen unboxing mugs, exchanged a curious look with Jerome, who shrugged and walked over to answer it. There, standing in the hallway, were two young women. One was a brunette with dark, perfectly styled hair and a confident air; the other was blonde, with a warm smile and friendly energy.
"Hi!" said the brunette, smiling brightly. "I'm Veronica Lodge, and this is Betty Cooper. We're your neighbors!" She glanced behind her. "Actually, we're kind of everyone's neighbors. Riverdale's a small town, so people know each other."
Betty smiled. "Yeah, we thought we'd stop by and say hi. We brought muffins!" She held up a plate of what looked like homemade blueberry muffins, fresh and warm. Asher and Jerome glanced at each other, pleasantly surprised.
"Wow, thank you," Jerome said, taking the plate and gesturing them in. "Come in, please!"
Veronica's eyes immediately took in the partially decorated space, her designer instincts kicking in. "This place has so much potential," she said, with a sweeping glance. "Have you guys considered a bold accent wall?"
Jerome chuckled. "Uh, we haven't thought that far ahead yet," he admitted, pulling Asher close. "We're still figuring out where to put the coffee maker."
Asher laughed. "We're grateful for any decorating tips," he added, though he was starting to feel he might have no say in the apartment's design once Veronica set her mind to it.
Betty sat on the edge of their couch, relaxing. "Riverdale's a pretty quiet town," she explained. "It has its quirks, sure, but it's a good place. Just stay away from Sweetwater River at night, and, um… maybe avoid the Ghoulies. Other than that, you'll be fine!"
"The Ghoulies?" Asher raised an eyebrow.
Veronica rolled her eyes. "Local troublemakers. They think they're edgy, but it's all very high school. If they give you any trouble, just let me know."
"Do they come with the town?" Jerome joked, and Betty laughed.
"Yes, sort of," she replied. "They're part of the package deal, but you'll mostly see them around if there's a party or something happening at Pop's."
Veronica's eyes lit up at the mention of Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe. "Speaking of, that's our local diner, and it's the place to be. Best milkshakes, burgers, and small-town drama. We can take you both there if you want a proper Riverdale welcome."
Asher and Jerome shared a look, both grinning. "We're in," Jerome said.
That night, they followed Betty and Veronica to Pop's, finding the place brimming with life. The scent of burgers and fries filled the air as they settled into a red vinyl booth, glancing at the menu. Betty suggested the strawberry milkshake, which she claimed would "change your life." Jerome took her advice, while Asher decided to try the root beer float.
"So," Veronica said, leaning in and smirking as she eyed Asher and Jerome. "How did you two end up in Riverdale?"
Asher smiled, feeling suddenly shy. "We just wanted something different. It's quieter here, you know?"
Jerome chimed in, grinning. "We'd read an article about Riverdale and thought, 'Why not?' Plus, the people are friendlier. I mean, you're already showing us the best places!"
Veronica raised her milkshake in a mini toast. "To making new friends and finding new beginnings!"
They clinked their glasses and drank, the moment warm and welcoming. But just as they started chatting, the diner door swung open, and a young man in a leather jacket walked in. He had an unmistakable presence that even Asher and Jerome, new as they were, couldn't ignore.
"Archie!" Betty exclaimed, waving him over. "Come meet our new friends."
Archie nodded, grinning. "Nice to meet you both! New faces are rare around here." He settled into the booth, looking comfortable in that way only locals can be.
Jerome and Asher introduced themselves, and soon the five of them were deep in conversation, laughing and sharing stories. It was the kind of night they hadn't had in ages, one that filled them with the thrill of a new place, new friends, and the hope of adventure.
As they were finishing their milkshakes, Veronica leaned over with a gleam in her eye. "Now that you're here," she said, "you'll have to help us with a little project."
Asher looked wary but intrigued. "What kind of project?"
"Oh, nothing too crazy," she said, waving her hand casually. "Just a little holiday event we're planning for the town. Something to make a splash and liven things up around here. We're doing a big Christmas talent show, and we want to make it… unforgettable."
Betty grinned. "Think of it as our way of making sure you guys feel part of the community. Plus, who can resist holiday magic?"
Asher and Jerome exchanged glances, already amused and maybe a little nervous. But they nodded in agreement, intrigued by whatever Veronica and Betty had in store.
And so began their life in Riverdale, a place that was both quiet and filled with more drama than they could have imagined. Over the weeks, they found themselves swept into the town's whirlwind of events, bonding with Veronica over decorating tips, sharing late-night coffee runs with Betty, and even getting pulled into a "Welcome to Riverdale" prank war started by none other than Jughead Jones.
In the midst of all the town's quirks and chaos, they discovered a tight-knit community. Jerome and Asher may have come to Riverdale looking for a fresh start, but they found something much more: a place that would always feel like home.
