75 Years Chapter 12
Author's Note: I do not own The Hunger Games
Following the 11th Hunger Games the Gamemakers started to plan out future Arenas. Like the 11th, the 12th Hunger Games would take place in another natural Arena. This time, the Arena was a peat bog; only a few areas was solid ground. The Cornucopia was on one of the solid ground, while planks of wood criss-crossed the peat. Several shrubs of bilberries grew in the Arena. The 12th Hunger Games would be remembered for the first "Career Tributes". This Games was one of the few instances in which there was no twelve-year-old Tributes. The pair from 4 had Mags Flanagan as Mentor, Mags becoming the first Victor to Mentor a Tribute.
The Tributes:
District 1: Beryl Whittingham (18), Amaze Renner (18)
District 2: Sandy Crouch (18), Achilles Evans (18)*
District 3: Amphere Powell (15), Terance Gove (17)
District 4: Cascade Benanti (17), Kano Murrel (18). Mentor: Mags Flanagan (17)
District 5: Tammy Winchester (16), Wilfred Mehrtens (16)
District 6: Ella Gower (14), Daffyd Wilson (15)
District 7: Juniper Buschschluter (17), Axel Dooley (16)
District 8: Polly Arkwright (15), Buckle Crompton (18)
District 9: Quiona Van Dyke (16), Saturn Rashford (14)
District 10: Daisy Dove (16), Jude Giraldi (13)
District 11: Summer Jamieson (13), Planter Shelvey (14)
District 12: Clover Mellark (15), Phoenix Grealish (17)
*Career Tribute
The Games:
As the Tributes stood on the podiums surrounding the Cornucopia, itself on solid ground, each Tribute was thinking of the best course of action as the countdown started ticking down. The moment the gong rang, the Tributes stepped off the pedestals; Tammy and Wilfred grabbing a short knife and a small bag each before fleeing across the planks. Cascade, the girl from 4, as well as the pair from 12 and the girl from 8, had the same idea as the pair from 5. It wasn't long before the first blood was drawn, marking the start of the Bloodbath that, at the end, would stain the ground with the blood of five Tributes. The "Career" Tribute, District 2's Achilles Evans, picked up a bar mace and headed towards the nearest Tribute. Seconds later the girl from District 11 lay crumpled by the Cornucopia, blood splatters staining the horn red.
24th: Summer Jamieson, District 11. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Achilles. Blodbath
A small boy from District 9 slipped on the marshy ground as he attempted to flee from the carnage. As he struggled to pull himself out Sandy, armed with a longsword, placed the blade to his neck. A swing later and the boy's head had been lopped from his neck.
23rd: Saturn Rashford, District 9. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Sandy. Bloodbath
As Sandy ended Saturn's life, Amaze Renner, the District 1 male who allied with the pair from District 2 and his District Partner, picked up a bow and some arrows, firing several arrows at a tall, lithe boy from District 8, who collapsed in a hail of projectiles.
22nd: Buckle Crompton, District 8. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Amaze. Bloodbath
Beryl spotted a small girl from District 6, and giving chase armed with a spear, she soon caught up to her opponent before spearing her from behind.
21st: Ella Gower, District 6. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Beryl. Bloodbath.
As Beryl made her way back to her allies she saw that most of the Tributes had fled, with the exception of her allies and a boy from District 4. Seeing Kano pick up a large bag she wanted made her angry, and as she ran towards him the boy from District 4 climbed over the Cornucopia before fleeing, causing Beryl to hit her head against the horn, falling beside where Summer's corpse lay, the Pre-Games Sponsors favourite laying dead as the small girl beside her.
20th: Beryl Whittingham, District 1. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Kano. Bloodbath.
With the remaining Tributes now scattered, Amaze and the District 2 Tributes snarled angrily towards the direction Kano ran. With Beryl lay dead on the ground, the trio decided to try and hunt for Kano in retaliation for her death.
Day 2 dawned with a cannon fire. The group of three had come across a sleeping boy on one of the planks. Phoenix managed to wake up in time to see Amaze and his allies surrounding him. Sandy and Amaze pinned the boy's limbs down as Achilles hacked at the boy.
19th: Phoenix Grealish, District 12. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Achilles. Day 2.
As the trio left the plank Phoenix's dismembered body lie, they returned to the Cornucopia to see the boy from District 3 and girl from District 4. Spotting a harpoon, Achilles harpooned both Tributes within moments, neither Tribute having the time to react.
18th: Cascade Benanti, District 4. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Achilles. Day 2
17th: Terance Gove, District 3. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Achilles. Day 2
Later on Day 2, a small boy from District 10 stood on a rotten plank, resulting in a death that would become common by the time the Games come to an end.
16th: Jude Giraldi, District 10. 12th Hunger Games. Drowned. Day 2
As the Tributes remained scattered, it was difficult for the group of three to find the remaining Tributes in the bog as the first storm clouds gathered overhead, bringing with it the first torrent of heavy rain. A girl from District 7 slipped on the boggy ground, falling face first.
15th: Juniper Buschschluter, District 7. 12th Hunger Games. Drowned. Day 2.
On Day 3, Sandy managed to spot Kano gathering up some bilberries, and began to trail towards him. Picking up a plank, she struck Kano out cold before unsheathing her longsword and splitting the boy in two, the boy killed by the force of the plank.
14th: Kano Murrel, District 4. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Sandy. Day 3.
As Sandy picked up the stash of berries in the Control Room Mags sat at the District 4 Mentor Booth, stunned. Her first year of Mentoring Tributes, and both were dead at the hands of the District 2 pair. "I'm sorry Cascade and Kano" she muttered, feeling more isolated. Back in the Arena, Sandy spotted both Amaze and Achilles, and yelled and waved to the boys, not realising that she was starting to sink into the bog. "Sandy!" Achilles yelled as he held out his hand in a futile attempt to save his District Partner as the bog swallowed her up before the Cannon fired.
13th: Sandy Crouch, District 2. 12th Hunger Games. Drowned. Day 3.
On the other side of the Cornucopia Amphere Powell attempted to sneak a bag of supplies. Standing on one of the planks, she felt something splinter underfoot. Moments later the rotten plank collapsed, plunging Amphere into the bog below.
12th: Amphere Powell, District 3. 12th Hunger Games. Drowned. Day 3.
Later that day, Achilles and Amaze saw that three of the four planks had gone, and decided to remain at the Cornucopia. It was a good thing they did, as another Tribute drowned in the peat bog.
11th: Daffyd Wilson, District 6. 12th Hunger Games. Drowned. Day 3
Overnight, even more rain fell into the Arena. Tammy and Wilfred hid in a small cave on one of the few patches of land that wasn't boggy. Overnight, a cannon boomed after Planter found himself in the bog.
10th: Planter Shelvey, District 11. 12th Hunger Games. Drowned. Day 4
On the morning of Day 4, Daisy Dove, her fringe covering her eyes as a result of the rainfall, found herself on the marshy ground. As the girl struggled Amaze snapped her neck.
9th: Daisy Dove, District 10. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Amaze. Day 4
The Final Eight had been decided: Amaze Renner from District 1, Achilles Evans from District 2, Tammy Winchester from District 5, Wilfred Mehrtens from District 5, Axel Dooley from District 7, Polly Arkwright from District 8, Quinoa Van Dyke from District 9 and Clover Mellark from District 12. For the rest of Day 4 and Day 5, no kills were made as the Interviews with the families of the Final Eight were conducted. On Day 6, Gamemaker Snow told the Gamemakers that "After the next death, conduct a Feast", with the death occurring on Day 7. Amaze spotted a boy from District 5 gathering bilberries from a shrub near the Cornucopia. Picking up a spear, he threw it at the unfortunate boy; the spear entered through the boy's back, with the end coming out through his stomach.
8th: Wilfred Mehrtens, District 5. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Amaze. Day 7
After the death recap that night, Lucky Flickerman announced to the seven surviving Tributes that there will be a Feast the next day.
Day 8 saw the seven Tributes arrive at the Cornucopia, which had been abandoned by the Districts 1 and 2 boys overnight. Tammy slipped into the Corncupia, grabbed a bag with her District number before fleeing, a tactic that would be repeated by Tributes from the District in the years to come. As Clover grabbed a bad with the number 12 Achilles ambushed her, and with a large hammer, killed the girl.
7th: Clover Mellark, District 12. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Achilles. Day 8
By this time Polly Arkwright, another girl who hid in the Cornucopia with Tammy, had fled, leaving only five Tributes at the Feast. With a swing of his axe, Axel lopped Amaze's head clean off.
6th: Amaze Renner, District 1. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Axel. Day 8
Sensing that Achilles would try and kill him, Axel fled. Achilles saw the decapitated corpse of his ally on the ground, and in rage, slammed his hammer at the side of a fleeing District 9 girl
5th: Quinoa Van Dyke, District 9. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Achilles. Day 8.
With the Feast now over, just four Tributes remained: Achilles Evans of District 2, Tammy Winchester of District 5, Axel Dooley of District 7 and Polly Arkwright of District 8. Later on Day 8, Achilles had caught up with a Tribute, and grabbing the Tribute, shoved her face-first into the bog until she suffocated.
4th: Polly Arkwright, District 8. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Achilles via bog. Day 8
Counting how many were left, Achilles smiled. Two more and I'm home! he thought as he continued to hunt for Axel. What Achilles didn't realise was Tammy had watched him kill the girl from 8.
On the evening of Day 8, Achilles managed to catch up with Axel. After drawing his sword the Career pierced Axel's shoulder, with the boy from 7 dropping his axe into the ground. Now weaponless, Achilles' hammer would make contact with Axel's legs, shattering them as he continued hammering the boy to death.
3rd: Axel Dooley, District 7. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Achilles. Day 8.
As Achilles was hammering the boy from 7, Tammy found several planks. Jumping on the nearest she yelled "Hey, Career. Would you like to walk on the board?" Achilles looked at the voice. A slight brunette girl was standing precariously on the board. Hoping for an easy kill, Achilles leapt on the board as the sound of the breaking wood was underfoot. Within moments Achilles was struggling in the bog as he attempted to pull himself out as the rain fell. The more the rain fell, the wetter the bog got and the more likely that Achilles would drown in the bog. In the heavy rain, Tammy knelt down and slashed his throat.
2nd: Achilles Evans, District 2. 12th Hunger Games. Killed by Tammy. Day 9
As the rain cleared Tammy dragged the body of the fallen Career onto the plank she stood on, before walking onto the solid ground, the realisation hitting her.
1st: Tammy Winchester, District 5. 12th Hunger Games. VICTOR!
With a final look at the bog, Tammy boarded the Hovercraft.
Aftermath: Tammy would strike a friendship with Mags, the two being close in age, and would go on to Mentor a number of District 5 Tributes. One Tribute she would Mentor to victory was Porter Tripp. Tammy would die peacefully shortly before the 70th Hunger Games. However, the greatest legacy from the 12th Hunger Games was "Career Tributes". Achilles Evans would be remembered in Panem's history as the "First Career Tribute", with his legacy continuing until the 74th Hunger Games. The Feast, tested during the 12th Hunger Games, would become a mainstay in the years to come.
The 12th Hunger Games was the last Games in which every single Tribute was born prior to the Treaty of Treason.
Victors list:
1st: Edgar Parlour (District 1)
2nd: Virgil Barde (District 8)
3rd: Ginny Canova (District 11)
4th: Horsa Georges (District 10)
5th: Mmseyone Musk (District 3)
6th: Paris Curl (District 2)
7th: Chive Carmichael (District 9)
8th: Samson Wilson (District 6)
9th: Hestia Curl (District 2)-First District to have more than one Victor
10th: Lucy Grey Baird (District 12)
11th: Mags Flanagan (District 4)
12th: Tammy Winchester (District 5)
So District 5 finally got their first Victor, meaning that District 7 still hasn't gained a Victor. But the good news is they won't have long to wait. Fun fact: In the 2018 first draft of 75 Years, the First Hunger Games took place in a Peat Bog Arena. We also saw the introduction of The Feast in this Chapter. Achilles appeared in Different Perspectives in Chapter 5 being trained up by his uncle.
