-The Enchanter of Fairy Tail-
Chapter 11: Magic!
Year: X752. 32 years till Canon begins.
Cade POV:
4 Days left to learn Magic.
I woke up today feeling very excited. In just a few hours time I might be casting my own enchantment spells! Granted, after that I'm not entirely sure in what I'll be doing except maybe more translating.
But then… just maybe… I could go on my first job in Fairy Tail!
I quickly got dressed and made my way downstairs into the dining hall to have some breakfast. I saw Charles on the way there, inspecting the carpet at the manor entrance to see if there was any marks on it. He heard me coming and turned to see me.
"Ah good morning Sir Philipe! One of your friends from the party a few days back has arrived today. I allowed them in and they are currently in the dining hall." He stated pointing to the room at the other end of the hall.
"Oh… who is it?" I asked in confusion.
"Oh I'm not sure. I didn't recognise him as I didn't get a good look at his face during the party, but then your mother saw him from behind me and allowed him in the manor while suggesting that he go to the dining hall for something to eat." Charles said, getting back to cleaning the carpet.
"Huh…"
'Guess I better go see who it is then.' I thought as I made my way to the dining hall. I wonder who it was?
When I entered my face dropped seeing who it was.
I was surprised to see Master Makarov of all people sitting in the chair I would usually sit in. The man was eating away at some of the fruit that we had here.
"MASTER!? What are you doing here?!" I shouted in shock upon seeing him here this early in the morning.
Master finished eating a banana, before turning to me and speaking. "Ah Cade there you are! I figured it would be best to get up here nice and early. Unfortunately you weren't awake when I got here."
"I was about to leave but your mother saw me and invited me in for a bite to eat! I simply couldn't say no to that, so I entered the house and waited for you to wake up." He said smiling. "I must say the fruit here is great! I must come back round again sometime."
"Ah Cade, you're awake at last." Came the voice of my mother as she emerged from the kitchen. "I'm looking forward to seeing if you can cast magic today." She said, smiling at me.
I was still trying to get my head around that my Master Makarov was just in our home casually eating food and taking in the sights of the paintings on the wall. I mean I had no problem with him being here. I just didn't expect him to be right here, right now.
"Say, is that really Cobalt up there June?" Master Makarov asked, pointing to the painting on the left of the wall. "Hardly looks like him, and that's not mentioning the fact that he's all dressed up there!" He said chucking at the last part.
"Oh yes, he never did like to wear more formal clothing." Replied my mother with a sigh. "Was always so annoying when we had to go to events in Magnolia and elsewhere."
"And I suppose that's you up there Cade?" Makarov said pointing to the paining on the right. "Can't help but wonder how you'll turn out in the future. I have a feeling that you'll be great going forwards after today."
I gave a small smile at that compliment. "Heh, thanks Master. Speaking of today, what weapon will I be enchanting?"
"Well you'll be… er…"
Master Makarov paused.
"Erm… I've just realised that… I didn't bring any sort of weapons up with me… Seems I forgot. My apologies." He admitted awkwardly.
"What!?" I was taken aback by what he said just there. "Don't you have some sort of magic in that requip thing you have?" I questioned.
"My Requip storage is mostly used to hold my clothing so I can change it at will. Like this!" He stated before glowing in a white light, and when the light faded he was dressed in his formal clothing that I first saw him in at my 10th birthday.
"Wow…" I gasped in shock. "I mean that's cool Master, but I don't think it helps us…"
"Yes I'm afraid you are right about that…" Makarov muttered with a frown on his face.
"I have an idea! How about you use one of the knives we have here in the manor!" Suggested my mother, which caused both me and Makarov to look at each other in confusion, before looking back at my mother.
"Er… would that work?" I wondered as I turned to look back at Master.
"Hard to say. This is rather tricky magic we are dealing with here. In any case it might be worth a try." Master Makarov nodded.
"Well… we don't have anything else to use." I turned to Master Makarov, shrugging my shoulders.
"True, I think it'll have to do then. Alright, why don't we finish up here then you can try to cast that spell." Makarov said to me.
"Oh but there is much more food to be eaten Master Makarov! We have toast, scrambled egg, pancakes…" My mother proceeded to go on about all the different foods we had here, causing Makarov's eyes to widen in surprise.
"What?! You have all that here?!" Master looked shocked. "Well then let's bring it out! Be a shame to waste it all." He said smiling, as mother called Pierce in to help us with that matter.
'Oh boy… we're gonna be here a while…' I thought as Pierce came in to help pass out the food. 'May as well have some stuff myself.' I then took a seat.
I had been waiting years to use magic, I guess I could wait another hour or so.
One hour later, myself mother and Master Makarov were all outside in the garden. It was a nice sunny day with not many clouds in the sky.
Master had suggested that we do this outside as the weather was nice, so if something did go wrong when trying this, then the garden would burn down instead of the house. Also it was a good place to practise with it being quiet.
The three of us were around a table which was located away from the back door of the house. On the table was Malvel's tome and a kitchen knife that my mother brought out from the kitchen.
"Alright Cade, just read the spell again to see how you cast the enchantment on the knife." Master confirmed, as he watched with anticipation.
I opened the book to page 2 and read the back of the page again. There was a detailed explanation on how to channel my ethernano into the weapon of my choice. But in a nutshell, all I had to was hold out my hand and focus the ethernano in my body through to my hand that I'm holding out, then I had to focus and utter the name of the spell.
"Here we go." I muttered, a little nervous and also a little excited about casting the spell.
I followed the instructions and held out my right hand to the knife and focused the ethernano inside of me to my right hand. Then I took a deep breath and uttered the name of the spell I was casting.
"Kaen!" I said fiercely.
As soon as I said it, I felt the ethernano inside me pour out into the knife surrounding it before being absorbed into it.
'Whoa! This feels so weird… and good at the same time! Is this what casting magic feels like?'
After about a few more seconds, I could no longer feel the ethernano exiting my body and lowered my hand. It was then I felt very tired, most likely due to dumping almost all of my ethernano into the knife. As such I fell onto the grass below on my knees.
"Phew… I think… it worked…" I muttered exhausted. "I mean… I can't think of what else would make me that tired." I said grinning.
"Cade! Are you alright?" Said my mother with a worried tone as she knelt down to me.
"I'm fine… just really tired after that." I assured her.
"Easy there Cade." Said Makarov as he looked down at me. "You may want to take it easy for the next hour or so." He assured, giving me a pat on the shoulder. "Now then…"
Master looked at the knife, before then looking at the back of page 2. He picked up the knife and turned it round in his hand for a minute or so before looking back at the page. "Hmmm, apparently you just need to focus your ethernano into the knife and fire will shoot out of the knife."
Myself and my mother watched as he held the knife in his hand, before the blade suddenly shot out some fire. Makarov smiled when seeing this, and turned to look at me. "Congratulations Cade. You just casted magic for the first time." He confirmed proudly, before placing the knife back on the table.
"It actually worked! I did it!" I shouted in happiness, pumping my fist in the air and cheering to celebrate.
My mother hugged me in delight with her cheering as well, before hugging me. I then turned back to Makarov. "So with that done then, there's no more time limit for me then, right?" I asked.
"Indeed. You are now considered a proper wizard Cade. I look forward seeing what you can do in Fairy Tail in the future." Master answered with a pleased expression on his face. "Now, when you aren't as exhausted, how about we head to the guild? I'm sure Gildarts would love to see what you've done since he's last seen you." Makarov suggested to me.
"Sounds good. Not sure how long it'll be until I can get moving again though." I said with annoyance as I tried to stand back up, but was to tired to do so and was forced back on my knees.
"Makarov, how long will it take until Cade is fully recovered?" Questioned my mother to Master, with a little bit of concern.
"Considering that Cade is still quite young, and the fact that was his first spell, it'll take about a full hour before he is back up at 100% again." Makarov replied, as he brushed his moustache. "But it'll be around a few minutes before you can start moving freely again." He said with a cheerful manner.
I then asked Master Makarov an important question "Hey Master? Will casting magic always be that draining in the future?" I asked with a bit of worry. Makarov cleared his voice and replied to me.
"No it will not always be like that. The more you use magic, the more your magic container and potential will grow. In the future you could probably cast that Kaen spell with relative ease and not nearly be as drained. You could also train your mind some more with additional meditation." Makarov answered patting me on my shoulder.
"Oh well that's good! Was just curious about that." I said, breathing a sigh of relief. "Just one more question Master, do you think I should put more focus into increasing my ethernano control by meditating more, or learn more spells in the spell book?" I wondered, hoping that he could help me with what to do next.
"Well I think you should be the one to decide that, I don't want to force you into doing something you may not want to. But if I had to say… it might be best to practice casting Kaen some more. That way when you do learn more spells, you'll be much more capable of handling the drain. Though I still think you should decipher some more spell pages while you are doing that." Master confirmed, looking back down at the knife on the table.
"Hmm… Yeah that sounds like a good idea Master, thanks!" I responded happily. I then tried to stand up again, and this time I was able to so. My mother was a little bit anxious as I was doing it, but was happy to see me back up.
"Feeling better Cade?" She said to me as I got up.
"Yeah! I think I can walk around now." I slowly took a step forward, being relieved to not fall back down. "By the way… was there any leftovers from breakfast this morning? I'm really starved after that spell just there." I wondered, as my stomach groaned. Causing both my mother and Master to start laughing at my comment.
'This better not happen every time I use a spell…' I thought as my stomach groaned again.
After I was able to get up on my own two feet without falling over, the three of us returned inside the house with the spell book and knife in my hands. I was then able to devour a whole three remaining pancakes, which was seemingly able to bring me back up to 100% condition.
Master explained to me that removing a lot of ethernano from my body at such a fast rate caused my stomach to act up and make me hungry. He then explained that eating food seemed to have helped, as re-fuelling my stomach would have also solved the issue of the ethernano in my body being drained at a rapid speed. Thankfully, he said that over time I shouldn't get that hungry, as my magical container will develop the more I use spells.
After I was refuelled, we both headed off to the guild so that we could show the guild what I had accomplished. The kitchen knife had been left at the manor and the spell book was put safely away under my bed before leaving.
"Hey Master, I've been thinking." I spoke as we walked through Magnolia and towards Fairy Tail.
"Hmm?" Replied Master Makarov
"Well I'm not exactly ready to go on quests yet, as I don't have any good spells to help me with that, so I was thinking. Could I maybe enchant some of the guild members weapons as long as they pay me?" I brought up to him.
Makarov turned to look at me with a quizzed look on his face. "Hmmmm…" He gave this idea some thought.
I have no problem with this idea Cade, but only on one condition: Once you learn some sort of offensive magic you will have to stop that as by then you will be able to go on jobs." He stated firmly. "It'd be best if you get out there when you have the chance."
"Aw thanks Master! I'll be sure to get you a discount if you want to buy anything!" I cheered to him with excitement of my idea going ahead.
"Hahaha! I don't think I'll have to buy anything, but I'll keep an open mind Cade." He said smiling at me. I was happy at that decision being made, however I remembered something important.
"I just realised Master. If I go through with this little market of mine, then that would mean I would have to inform the guild about my ability to use Enchantment Magic." I said with a frown. "I mean… I will be just selling them to guild members… so I think it might be ok." I answered slowly.
"Hmm." Makarov muttered to himself, thinking about this. "Alright then, I'll inform the guild when we get there." Makarov agreed nodding his head as we continued to walk.
"Say there's one more thing Master. When do you think I'll awaken my actual magic?" I asked, hoping that the Master would have the answer to my question.
"Well now that you have unlocked your magical container, I doubt you'll have to wait for that long to awaken your magic." Makarov stated. "In terms of when specifically, I'm not sure. I have a feeling it'll just come to you one day when you're least expecting it." Makarov continued, giving me a little bit of hope that I'll unlock it one day.
Not long after that we arrived at the guildhall. The guild wasn't packed full like it was when I first entered the building a few days ago. But there was still a relatively large group of wizards in.
When we entered most of the wizards turned to look at us, before going back to whatever they were doing before. Master then turned to me. "You want me to tell the guild about your offer to sell them magical weapons with enchantments?" He whispered quietly to me.
I nodded my head "Yeah if that's ok with you."
Makarov smiled and then moved to stand up on the main counter of the guild and cleared his voice, before then making himself known to everyone else. "Attention everyone! I have a few important announcements to make, gather round!" Makarov yelled.
Members of the guild from upstairs came down to hear, members on the first floor stopped what they were doing and turned to face Master. I noticed Gildarts sitting with a crowd on a bench and I saw Ivan come up from the basement to hear what his father had to say. I also heard a few of the members whisper among themselves, in which I could hear the words S-Class and trial come up.
"As you know around this time of year is when I would announce the S-Class trials." Master began to say. More excited whispers could be heard throughout the guild as he said that.
"However due to my observation of your skills this year, I am sorry to say that I will not be hosting the S-Class trials this year. Now I hope tha-"
"What!" "Come on Master!" "I can do it!" "You can't do this!" "Please reconsider!" "I need S-Class!" "How could you do this?!" "This is outrageous." "It's not just outrageous, it's unfair!" "How can you be a member of Fairy Tale, and not have the chance to become S-Class!"
"SILENCE!" Yelled Master at the top of his voice as he grew to his ginormous size. That quickly shut everyone up, as Master then shrank back down to his usual size.
"I regret to inform you that many of you are not yet strong enough to achieve the rank of S-Class. Hardly any A-Class jobs have been accepted this year! How can you brats say that you deserve S-Class if you won't even do the jobs with a rank right below it!" Master shouted with annoyance, getting everyone's attention.
"I will be watching you all from now until this time next year, so if you want to be selected for next years trial then I recommend you start accepting many A-Class quests if you think you have what it takes!" Master shouted, him seemingly challenging the guild members.
Many of the guild members muttered and nodded their heads in agreement with what he said, before yelling out in agreement and running over to the job board to accept jobs that were available. Unfortunately they forgot who was just addressing them all.
"WOULD YOU FOOLS STOP RUNNING AWAY WHEN I HAVE MORE TO SAY!" Yelled Makarov, who yet again grew ginormous and caused everyone to immediately run back in front of him in fear. Master Makarov sighed and muttered something under his breath, as he shrank back down to his normal size.
"The final thing I have to say is this." He then gestured his hand towards me. "Cade here has just learned Enchantment Magic."
There were quite a few mummers going around the guild when Master said that. Clearly these guys knew how rare enchantment magic was, though whether they knew what kind of spells you could actually do with it, I was not sure of. Of course I also heard the occasional murmur of confusion as to what my magic was.
"As Cadewell is unable to take jobs due to currently not having any offensive or good defence spells, he is willing to enchant any weapons you may have for a price." Upon hearing that, a lot of the guild members began to talk among themselves. I could see smiles on some of their faces and contemplation on others. One guild member came forward.
"Could you enchant mine? It's a sword." He then unholstered a sword he had on his tunic and showed it to me. I looked at Master, and he just shrugged his shoulders as if to say it was my call to make. I thought for a moment before answering.
"I can. It's a fire enchantment, is that ok?" I said to him.
"Yeah works for me. How much for it?" He questioned reaching into his tunic for jewels.
"100,000 jewels." I said confidently to him. I had asked Master is we could take a look at what other shops in Magnolia price their magical items on the way here, so I could get a good idea of what to price my items as. I surprised to see that many strong items were priced at a minimum of 200,000 jewels!
Master told me that many wizards in Fairy Tail just rely on their own magic and don't try to spend that much money on magical gear due to the highs prices they can reach. I decided to go with 100,000 jewel as for a start it was much lower so more people will want to buy it.
And hey, all I had to do was sell five magical weapons a month and would have been enough money to pay for rent!
"Seems like a nice price to me." Smiled the wizard handing the jewels to me, which I put in my jacket pocket.
He then handed the sword up to me. I picked up the sword and placed it on the bar on which Makarov was standing on, him jumping off to give me some space, as I then began to follow the steps to case Kaen on the sword. In a few minutes, I felt really tired again and handed the sword back to the wizard.
"Just focus your ethernano into the sword." I instructed to him. The wizard then presumably focused his ethernano into the sword, because in less than a minute the blade of the sword burst into flames.
The wizard looked thrilled at this. "Thanks kid, this should help me out in the future." He thanked, smiling at me. Before heading off back into the crowd.
When the man had left, many of the wizards began to pull out their various weapons and hold them out to me, wanting me to enchant them as well.
Makarov however, moved in front of me. "Listen up! Can't you see that Cade is exhausted after casting that spell just there? You can't seriously expect him to be an expert at casting his magic when he has only just learned it!" Makarov shouted at the guild.
Upon hearing him, many of the wizards that were all too eager a minute ago, now began to feel a bit embarrassed by their rash thinking. "Come to Cade when you can clearly see that he hasn't just cast a spell like that." Master said firmly.
Many of the wizards seemed to back off upon hearing that. "Now then. That's all I had to say to you kids today. I know you're all sad about the S-Class trials, but there is always next year." Makarov cleared his voice again. "Now! Get out there and prove me that you do deserve S-Class, and do the Fairy Tail Guild proud!" He yelled.
With that many of the wizards in the guild ran over to the job board and picked up a job to take.
After that had happened, Gildarts came over to see me. "Hey Cade!" He said waving at me. "That was a smart idea of how to make money till you can actually do jobs." He said nodding his head at me.
"Thanks. Hopefully this will help my mother in paying for rent now." I said, pleased that the guild had seemed to accept my idea with not that many issues arising from it.
"How much is rent?" Asked Gildarts turning his head to me.
"500,000 jewel a month." I replied back to Gildarts.
"Woah, guess that means you have to sell at least five swords a month to keep up." Gildarts said to me. "But wait… Won't there come a point where the mages in Fairy Tail don't need enchanted weapons anymore? Maybe because you'd eventually sell enchanted weapons to all the wizards who have weapons in the guild; there'd be no customers left for you!"
"Yeah you're right…" I thought grimly at that. "Well I guess that gives me a time limit until I can awaken my actual magic." I realised, crossing my arms in deep thought.
"Well I'm sure you'll unlock it by then." Gildarts assured patting me on the shoulder. I smiled back at him.
"Thanks. Hey Gildarts! You wanna come over to my place with me and Lilly sometime?" I said with hope.
"Yeah! I'd love that!" Gildarts answered with a smile. "Let's go right now! We'll pick up your friend along the way!" Gildarts said as he ran to the guild door. I was felt better enough to the point where I can at least walk without issue, so I was able to follow Gildarts as he ran to out the guild, before then having to run back to me.
"Right, I don't know where your friend lives… Think you could lead the way?" He frowned looking a bit ashamed for his recklessness. I laughed at eagerness before beckoning him to follow me and we headed to Lilly's for the day.
Afterwards, me, Lilly and Gildarts headed to my place, and began our long and thrilling game. Mother was very happy to hear about my plan to act as a temporary salesman until I was able to go on proper jobs. She was even more surprised to see that I had already made a purchase, with an extra 100,000 jewel now in the house's treasury.
Pierce and Charles on the other hand, were surprised to see that the kitchen knife they always like to use when cooking, could now erupt flames from the hilt of it. They nearly had a heart attack when it happened, but on the plus side they could now cook food a lot easier.
For the next month I had gotten myself into a good routine involving selling weapons to the members of Fairy Tail.
While doing this I had deciphered two more pages in Malvel's spell book, those being pages 3 and 4. There wasn't any new diary entries in them (in which I was a little sad), but I could cast the enchantment spells known as Mizu and Kūki. Those were the enchants for water and air respectively. They worked similarly enough to the Kaen spell, the difference being that it was water and air that the weapon was getting enchanted with.
I had also made some progress when it came to casting enchantment spells. I could now cast a few of the basic enchantment spells I had learned without feeling completely exhausted afterwards. I could also cast the spells I've learned without any sort of feeling of tiredness or hunger take over me.
Perhaps the best thing that had happened in this one month, was that I was able to sell 13 enchantments to peoples weapons! Most people in the guild felt like they didn't require me to enhance their own weapons, feeling like they were fine on their own with their magic.
But that didn't mean I just wasn't getting any customers, when I had enchanted that one wizards sword in the guild, he had mentioned that the fire was very strong, and worked well with his magic. As such, many other wizards wanted fire, air and water enchantments for their weapons.
I had a little stall in the basement where I would enchant the weapons for them. This seemed to annoy Ivan, but he didn't say anything to me telling me to stop. Throughout all of last month I had made over a million jewels! This absolutely shocked my mother when I told her the total earnings I had earned.
Now I was aware that I could probably make more money than the average wizard in Fairy Tail if I kept going with this for another two months or so. However, Gildarts did have a point when he said that it will get to a time where no-one will need enchantments anymore in the guild, meaning I'll be all out of customers.
As such, I had been trying time after time to awaken my own magic. And yet somehow, I hadn't unlocked it yet! I had been increasing my magical container, yet nothing had come up. I had just arrived to Fairy Tail and brought this to Master who was sitting on the counter of the guild. He just sighed before answering.
"I'm really not sure how I can help you about this… The only thing I can recommend is that you maybe try to mediate some more." Makarov then looked up, before brushing his moustache. "I suppose you could go and see Porlyusica again. Her house does have that nice little meditation spot. Maybe that will help you with this."
Makarov then jumped off the counter. "Well let's get going then!" He said cheerfully.
"What!?" I said in shock. "We're going now!?"
"Well yes! No time like the present Cade! I'll walk with you there, then I have somewhere to go so I'll have to leave you there." Makarov said as he made his way to the guilds door. I then followed him before speaking up.
"Is it the same place you went to last time?" I asked curiously.
"No, no this is a different sort of visit Cade." He confirmed looking across to me, as we made it out of the guild and headed to Porlyusica's house.
Hopefully I'll be able to awaken my magic there.
And there you have it guys! Cade has finally learned magic! But this arc isn't over yet, one more chapter to go and then it's finished.
We are nearing the point where Cade will have learned the basics so to speak of how things work around the guild. After that there will be a few timeskips here and there. What do you think Cade's awoken magic will be?
Anyway, I'll see you all in the next chapter!
