Building the Teams
The Eds, Sarah, Jimmy, and Lillie soon arrive back at Iki Town where they see Professor Kukui on the town's stage. He turns as he hears the group approaching.
"Hi, everyone. Where have you been?" asked Professor Kukui.
"Just exploring that area over there." said Edd. Professor Kukui then notices Lillie standing with the Eds' group.
"I see you met Lillie, boys." said Professor Kukui. The group looks towards Lillie with surprise.
"You know Ms. Lillie, Professor?" asked Edd.
"Yes. She is my assistant, yeah." said Professor Kukui, surprising them. Lillie then walks over and stands next to him. "I thought you were with Kahuna Hala."
"No. He left town on his own to take care of a small problem, so I went on a little stroll up Mahalo Trail while I waited for him to return." said Lillie. Professor Kukui then turns towards the Eds' group.
"I'm guessing that's how you met the Eds, Sarah, and Jimmy here." said Professor Kukui. "They just arrived here in Alola today." Just then, they hear some people talking nearby.
"Hey! Kahuna Hala has returned!" someone said. The Eds, Sarah, Jimmy, Lillie, and Professor Kukui turned to see the man from the video message that the Eds got a week ago walk into town.
"There's Kahuna Hala, everyone." said Professor Kukui.
"Yes. I remember him from the video message we received last week." said Edd. Kahuna Hala looks around and stops when he sees the Eds. He smiles and walks over to them.
"Alola, Eds." said Kahuna Hala. "Welcome to the Alola Region and thank you so much for accepting my invitation."
"We were happy to, sir." said Edd.
"We really like Pokemon!" said Ed.
"Yeah, I missed them too." said Eddy.
"Well, I appreciate the fact that you came all the way here to try and qualify for the Alola League. People here have heard a lot about you." said Kahuna Hala.
"We know. Lots of people in Hau'oli wanted our autographs." said Eddy with a grin.
"I'm glad your visit here has been very eventful, boys." said Kahuna Hala.
"I'll say. Having fans asking us questions and for autographs, taking on Spearows on that bridge, falling into the ravine, and having that mysterious Pokemon fly in and rescue us." said Eddy, surprising Kahuna Hala and Professor Kukui.
"Mysterious Pokemon?" replied Professor Kukui. "What did it look like?" The Eds went on to give a detailed description of what the Pokemon looked like with Ed drawing a picture of it in the ground. When Kahuna Hala saw the drawing, he was astonished.
"You boys were saved by Tapu Koko?!" said Kahuna Hala.
"Tapu Koko?" replied Edd.
"One of four deity Pokemon here in the Alola Region. They have protected the people here for a long time. It's amazing that Tapu Koko has chosen to save you." said Kahuna Hala.
"Anything else happen, boys?" asked Professor Kukui. The Eds pulled the sparkling stones they got back near the bridge out of their backpacks.
"I think Tapu Koko left these behind for us." said Edd, surprising Professor Kukui and Kahuna Hala.
"I'm astounded." said Kahuna Hala. "Not only did Tapu Koko choose to rescue you, it deemed you worthy to recieve those stones?!"
"This has been quite the eventful day, hasn't it?" said Professor Kukui. Kahuna Hala steps up to the Eds.
"Can I borrow those stones for a while?" asked Kahuna Hala.
"Why?" asked Eddy.
"I can make something very useful for you out of them that can help you on your journey here." said Kahuna Hala. Not seeing a reason not to, the Eds hand Kahuna Hala their stones. "Thank you. You'll get them back tomorrow at the festival here in Iki Town."
"Festival?" replied Ed.
"Just a festival we do every year as a way to worship Tapu Koko. We have a battle here in order to do so as well." explained Kahuna Hala.
"Cool." said Ed. Professor Kukui turns towards Lillie.
"We should be getting back to the lab, Lillie." said Professor Kukui. "Be sure to keep an eye on Nebby and make sure he doesn't escape again."
"You know about Nebby?" asked Edd.
"Yes. Me, Kahuna Hala, and Lillie know about Nebby." said Professor Kukui.
"I see." said Edd. Out of the corner of his eye, he sees Nebby floating behind Lillie. Edd coughs to get Lillie's attention and points towards Nebby. Lillie turns to look and was surprised.
"Nebby! I thought I told you to stay in the bag." said Lillie. After she puts Nebby back in her duffel bag, she and Professor Kukui leave. Sarah and Jimmy run over to Kahuna Hala and hold out their sparkling stones.
"Can you make what you're making for the Eds from our stones?" asked Jimmy, surprising Kahuna Hala.
"You two have stones?!" asked Kahuna Hala.
"Yeah, that's right." said Sarah.
"Who are you two?" asked Kahuna Hala.
"This is Ed's little sister, Sarah." said Edd, motioning towards Sarah. Then he points at Jimmy. "And this is her friend, Jimmy."
"These two stowed away in a bag that Ed had." said Eddy, surprising Kahuna Hala.
"That was a bit careless of them to do so." said Kahuna Hala.
"We know; but we really wanted to come on the Eds' new Pokemon journey." said Jimmy. Kahuna Hala lets out a sigh.
"Well, there's not much we can do about that." said Kahuna Hala. "But I can still make something for you from those stones as well." Sarah and Jimmy both hand Kahuna Hala their sparkling stones.
"So, what will you boys do now?" asked Professor Kukui.
"We're going to find some Pokemon for our new teams." said Edd.
"Good idea. You do want to be prepared for the Alola League." said Professor Kukui. He points to the south exit of Iki Town. "There's several species of Pokemon along the route outside of town here."
"Sweet!" said Eddy. He and the others then run off to look for Pokemon.
"Good luck, boys." said Professor Kukui as he waved. The group soon reaches Route 1 and start looking around.
"So, Double-D; how do you catch Pokemon?" asked Jimmy.
"A very good question to ask." said Edd. Just then, they hear some rustling coming from some nearby grass. They look to see a white, beetle-like Pokemon with an orange and yellow cranium and mandibles crawling out of the grass.
"Ewww. It's a giant bug!" said Sarah. Edd pulls out the Rotom Pokedex and points it at the Pokemon.
"Grubbin, the Larva Pokemon. It spits a sticky thread to stop opponents in their tracks, and then it grabs them in its sturdy mandibles to take them down." said the Rotom Pokedex. Eddy steps forward and takes out Litten's pokeball and releases him from it. Litten stands ready for battle.
"I got this one." said Eddy.
"Here's an excellent opportunity to show you two how to catch Pokemon." Edd says to Sarah and Jimmy. Eddy and Litten stare down the Grubblin.
"Okay, Litten! Hit it with Ember!" said Eddy. Litten opens his mouth and breathes out bits of fire which hit Grubbin, doing super effective damage.
"To make Pokemon easier to capture; you'll need to battle them in order to wear them out." said Edd. "Another thing you should know is that certain types of moves work well against certain types of Pokemon. For example, Eddy's Litten used a fire type attack on Grubbin which was a very effective tactic due to bug types like Grubbin being vulnerable to fire."
"Okay, Double-D." said Sarah. All of a sudden, Grubbin crawls at Litten and clamps down onto him with its mandibles and squeezes him hard, doing damage.
"Just so you know, any Pokemon you battle will fight back." said Edd.
"Litten, use Scratch!" said Eddy. Litten scratches at Grubbin with his claws, knocking it back. Seeing it was looking tired, Eddy looks in his backpack to grab a pokeball and sees the remaining Net Ball he bought in Floaroma Town back in Sinnoh. He pulls it out and shows it to Edd.
"Double-D. Didn't the shopkeeper back in Floaroma Town say this Net Ball works well when catching bug type Pokemon?" asked Eddy.
"Very good, Eddy. That will be perfect for catching that Grubbin." said Edd.
"Sweet!" said Eddy. He throws the Net Ball at Grubbin, hitting it and sucking it in.
"After you weaken the Pokemon enough; simply throw a pokeball at it to capture it." said Edd. "Mind you that battling the Pokemon only makes it easier to do so, but there's still a chance the Pokemon can break free." They all watch the pokeball wiggle a few times before it clicks. Eddy grins and runs over to pick it up.
"Yes! I caught a Grubbin!" said Eddy as he holds the Net Ball up in triumph.
"Congratulations, Eddy. Your first capture in the Alola Region." said Edd. He then looks at the Rotom Pokedex to see Eddy's Grubbin's information. "This says Eddy's new Grubbin is a boy, he knows Vice Grip, and String Shot; and he has the Swarm ability like my old Kricketune did which increases the power of his bug type moves when he's weakened enough. Eddy releases his new Grubbin from his pokeball and uses one of the Potions he got in Hau'oli City to heal him.
"What's that stuff?" asked Sarah.
"That's a Potion. It's used to restore some of a Pokemon's health, which are handy to have if you're far from a Pokemon Center and you want your Pokemon treated.
"That was amazing how Mr. Eddy caught that Pokemon!" said Jimmy. Sarah runs forward.
"Let me try catching one!" said Sarah.
"Very well, Sarah." said Edd. Eddy walks back to the others while Sarah waited in front of the grass.
"I'm not going to catch some yucky bug Pokemon though." said Sarah. She suddenly hears rustling from the grass. She looks and a ladybug-like Pokemon flies out of the grass. Sarah's eyes open wide with delight. "Oh, it's so cute! What is it?" Edd points the Rotom Pokedex at the Pokemon.
Ledyba, the Five Star Pokemon. These very cowardly Pokemon join together, and use Reflect to protect their nest." said the Rotom Pokedex.
"I want this Pokemon! I know I said that I won't catch a bug Pokemon, but for this one, I'll make an exception." said Sarah as she pulls out Happiny's pokeball. "Go, Happiny!" She throws Happiny's pokeball and releases her. "Double-D, what are Happiny's moves again?"
"If I recall, they were Minimize, Pound, and Copycat." said Edd.
"Okay. Happiny, use Pound!" said Sarah. Happiny leaps at Ledyba while her right arm glows white and she hits Ledyba with it, knocking it back. "Take that, Ledyba!" The Ledyba glares at Happiny and it flies at her and rams her, knocking her back. "Happiny!" Sarah glares angrily at Ledyba, making it nervous.
"I think Sarah's trying to use Leer, you guys." said Ed.
"I don't think it'll work, Ed; even if it's your sister that's doing it." said Eddy. Back with Sarah, she was staring down the Ledyba.
"You want to play rough, huh?! Happiny, use Pound again!" said Sarah. Happiny leaps at Ledyba and hits it. Ledyba flies at Happiny again. "Use Minimize!" Happiny glows a pinkish-purple and she shrinks to a tiny size and Ledyba ends up missing her. "Use Pound again!" Happiny returns to her regular size, and she leaps at Ledyba and hits it, knocking it to the ground. It struggles to get up.
"It weak enough, Sarah. Capture it!" said Edd. Sarah pulls an empty pokeball out of her pocket, enlarges it, and throws it at Ledyba, hitting it, and sucking it in. After it wiggles around a few times, it stops and clicks, indicating Ledyba's capture.
"You did it, Sarah!" cheered Ed. Sarah walks over to Ledyba's pokeball and picks it up with a stunned look on her face. The stunned look was then replaced with a big smile.
"Yay! I caught Ledyba!" cheered Sarah as she jumps into the air while holding up Ledyba's pokeball.
"Happiny! Happiny!" cheered Happiny, dancing around.
"Congratulatons, Sarah." said Edd. He takes out the Rotom Pokedex and uses it to look up Ledyba's information. "Okay, this says your Ledyba is a girl, she only knows Tackle, and like Eddy's Grubbin, she also has the Swarm ability. Another thing you and Jimmy should know is that your Pokemon will gain experience from battling. The more experience they gain, the more attacks they'll learn."
"Okay, Double-D." said Sarah. Jimmy turns towards the tall grass when he hears some rustling and a green caterpillar-like Pokemon crawls out.
"What is that?" asked Jimmy. Edd points the Rotom Pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Caterpie, the Worm Pokemon. Its body is soft and weak. In nature, its perpetual fate is to be seen by others as food." said the Rotom Pokedex. Jimmy pulls Riolu's pokeball out of his pocket.
"I won't let this Pokemon become food." said Jimmy. "I choose you, Riolu!" He throws Riolu's pokeball and releases him.
"Remember, Jimmy. Riolu knows Quick Attack and Endure." said Edd. Jimmy looks at Edd and nods.
"Riolu, use Quick Attack!" said Jimmy. Riolu charges forward at a fast speed and slams into the Caterpie, knocking it back. Caterpie gets up and sprays string at Riolu which tangles around him.
"I believe that was String Shot. It makes the Pokemon it's used on slower. Some Pokemon moves won't cause any damage, but they will affect Pokemon in other ways." said Edd. "But since Quick Attack will always go first, it won't matter how many times Caterpie uses String Shot on him." Jimmy smiles at the information.
"Okay. Riolu, Quick Attack one more time!" said Jimmy. Riolu uses Quick Attack on Caterpie again, knocking it to the ground. Seeing it struggle to get up, Jimmy quickly pulls out a pokeball and throws it at Caterpie, hitting it and sucking it in. After the pokeball wiggles a few times, it clicks. Jimmy runs over and picks up the pokeball and holds it up. "I did it! I caught a Caterpie!"
"Congratulations, Jimmy! Your first capture!" said Edd. He looks up Caterpie's information on the Rotom Pokedex. "Your Caterpie is a boy, he knows Tackle, and String Shot; and he has the Shield Dust ability which prevents the Pokemon with said ability from succumbing to secondary effects of certain Pokemon moves."
"Secondary effects?" replied Jimmy.
"Some moves that damage can also have another effect on the Pokemon it's used on." said Edd. "For example, there's a Pokemon move called Lick. The move will not just damage a Pokemon it's used on, it can also cause the status condition known as paralysis which can sometimes prevent a Pokemon with the condition from attacking. If the Pokemon it's used on has the Shield Dust ability, it won't cause paralysis."
"This sounds complicated." said Jimmy.
"That's okay. As you continue on the journey with us, you'll get the hang of it soon enough like me and my friends did." said Edd. Jimmy nods with a look of determination. Ed looks around some tall grass when he sees a brown, mongoose-like Pokmeon with a yellow stripe going down its back.
"What's that?" asked Ed. Edd points the Rotom Pokedex at the Pokmeon.
"Yungoos, the Loitering Pokemon. Although it will eat anything, it prefers fresh living things, so it marches down streets in search of prey." said the Rotom Pokedex.
"A Pokemon that will eat anything? Sounds like your kind of Pokemon, Ed." said Eddy.
"Yeah!" said Ed. He pulls out Rowlet's pokeball. "Come on out, Rowlet!" He throws Rowlet's pokeball and releases him. "Use Leafage!" Rowlet spreads his wings and unleashes glowing, light green leaves from his body, and they hit Yungoos, knocking it back. The Yungoos charges at Rowlet and rams him. "Rowlet, Growl!" Rowlet opens his beak and emits a loud cry, unleashing a soundwave that hits Yungoos, weakening its attack strength.
"What does that move do?" asked Sarah.
"It weakens a Pokemon's attack strength." replied Edd. The Yungoos glares at Rowlet and its eyes glow blue, weakening Rowlet's defense.
"It used Leer! Quick, Rowlet, use Leafage again!" said Ed. Rowlet unleashes another Leafage attack, and it hits Yungoos, knocking to the ground. Ed sees the Yungoos struggle to get up, so he takes an empty pokeball out of his pocket, enlarges it and throws it at Yungoos, hitting it and sucking it in. After it wiggles around for a few seconds, it stops and clicks. Ed picks it up. "Yeah! I caught a Yungoos!"
"Way to go, lumpy." said Eddy. Edd uses the Rotom Pokedex to learn about Ed's new Yungoos.
"According to this, your Yungoos is a boy, he knows Tackle, and Leer, and he has the Stakeout ability."
"What does that do?" asked Ed.
"It's a handy ability when you're battling another trainer that has more than one Pokemon." said Edd. "Stakeout will double the damage Yungoos deals to a trainer's Pokemon that replaced a previous one."
"Cool." said Ed. He turns to Rowlet. "You did good, Rowlet." They all suddenly hear flapping from above them, making them look up to see a woodpecker-like Pokemon flying down and landing in front of them. Edd points the Rotom Pokedex at the new Pokemon.
"Pikipek, the Woodpecker Pokemon. It may look spindly, but its neck muscles are heavy-duty. It can peck at a tree 16 times per second!" said the Rotom Pokedex.
"Catch it, Double-D!" said Ed.
"Very well." said Edd as he releases Popplio from her pokeball. "Popplio, use Pound!" Popplio leaps at the Pikipek and strikes it with his flippers. The Pikipek then flies at Popplio and pecks at her head. "Hurry, Popplio; use Bubble!" Popplio opens her mouth and releases a bunch of bubbles that hit Pikipek, making it fall over. Edd quickly takes out a pokeball and throws it at Pikipek, hitting it and sucking it in. Everyone watches the pokeball wiggle a few times before it clicks.
"You did it, Double-D!" cheered Sarah. Edd runs over and picks up his new Pikipek's pokeball.
"I have successfully captured a Pikipek!" said Edd. He then looks up his new Pikipek's information on the Rotom Pokedex. "My new Pikipek is a male, he knows Peck, and Growl; and he has the Pickup ability."
"What's that?" asked Eddy.
"This says that a Pokemon with the ability has a chance of finding an item after each battle." said Edd.
"So Pikipek can find us free stuff sometimes?" asked Eddy.
"That is correct, Eddy." said Edd.
"Sweet!" said Eddy. Jimmy then looks to the horizon to see the sun was starting to go down.
"The sun's going down." said Jimmy. Edd looks to see that Jimmy was correct.
"Yes. I think we've done enough for now. It's been a very eventful day and I'm certain we can use some dinner." said Edd. Ed's stomach starts to growl.
"Belly is hungry!" said Ed.
"Yeah, I could use a bite to eat." said Eddy. "To the Pokemon Center!" They all walked back to Hau'oli City and enter the Pokemon Center. After they gave the nurse their Pokemon, they went to the cafeteria and got some dinner.
"Here's to a successful start here in the Alola Region." said Edd as he lifted his glass of mango juice.
"Here, here." said Eddy as he and the others lifted their glasses. After they ate, they hear an announcement on the PA system.
'Will Ed, Edd, and Eddy please report to the nearest phone. You have a call on hold for you in the lobby.' said a woman's voice from the PA system.
"I wonder who's calling us?" asked Edd. The Eds, followed by Sarah and Jimmy walked to the lobby where they see a woman standing next to a vacant phone, motioning them to come over. They walk to the phone to see Kevin, Rolf, and Jonny on the monitor.
"Hey, guys!" said Ed.
"How are you three doing? Did you get to the Kalos Region okay?" asked Edd.
"You bet." replied Jonny. Sarah and Jimmy walked to the front of the monitor.
"Hi, you guys!" said Sarah.
"Sarah? Jimmy? What are you two doing there?" asked Kevin.
"They kind of stowed away with us." said Eddy.
"So how are things in Alola, Ed boys?" asked Rolf.
"Alola is so great!" replied Ed.
"And the Pokemon here are fascinating." said Edd.
"What kind of Pokemon did you get?" asked Jonny. They all told each other about their starter Pokemon and all the Pokemon they captured so far, along with what they all experienced in their journeys so far. Eddy was smiling with glee when Kevin told them about the Ed merchandise they saw.
"So where exactly in Kalos are you?" asked Edd.
"We're in Santalune City. There's a gym here we plan on challenging soon." replied Kevin.
"I recommend training your Pokemon some more." said Edd. "Gym leaders are much stronger than regular trainers."
"We'll keep that in mind." said Kevin. After talking for a few more minutes, they end the call.
"I'm glad they're doing okay." said Edd.
"Yeah." said Ed who suddenly yawns. Edd looks at the lobby's clock.
"It is getting a little late. Let's get ready for bed." said Eddy. They all went to their room, showered (except for Ed.), and went to sleep.
