The Third Signboard
Lincoln, Clyde and Kieran continue on their way to where the last signboard is so they can take a selfie of it to complete their orienteering assignment. Moments later, they arrived at a wasteland.
"Here we are; Paradise Barrens." said Kieran.
"Doesn't look much like paradise." said Lori.
"Let's go find that signboard." said Lincoln.
"Probably gonna have more made-up stuff about the Loser Three." said Lynn Jr.
"Probably; but we still need to find it so we can complete our assignment." said Lincoln. The boys began walking through Paradise Barrens; as they do, Lincoln sees a blue, rocklike Pokemon that kind of looked like an Easter Island head with a red nose nearby. He takes out his Rotom Phone and points it at the Pokemon.
"Nosepass, the Compass Pokemon. The magnet in Nosepass's nose provides an unerring compass, making this Pokémon an excellent partner for Trainers going on a journey." said Lincoln's Rotom Phone.
"Brother; I would like to acquire that Pokemon." said Lisa.
"Sure thing, Lisa." said Lincoln. He pulls Floragato's pokeball out of his belt and tosses it, releasing him. "Floragato, use Magical Leaf!" Floragato releases glowing green leaves from his body, and they hit Nosepass, dealing super effective damage. The Nosepass becomes surrounded by electricity and rams into Floragato, but not dealing much damage.
"That looked like Spark." said Clyde.
"Floragato, use Seed Bomb!" said Lincoln. Floragato unleashes large, glowing seeds from his hands, and they hit Nosepass, dealing super effective damage, and knocking it to the ground. Lincoln takes out an empty pokeball and throws it at Nosepass, hitting it, and sucking it in. It wiggled around a few times until it clicked.
"My Linky caught Nosepass!" cheered Iono. Nosepass' pokeball vanishes and gets transported to storage. Lincoln uses his Rotom Phone to look up Nosepass' information.
"Okay, Nosepass is a girl, she knows Tackle, Harden, Block, Rock Throw, Thunder Wave, Rest, Spark, and Rock Slide; she has the Magnet Pull ability which prevents steel type Pokemon from retreating in battle." He uses his Rotom Phone to transport Nosepass to the Loud house. "I just sent Nosepass home, Lisa."
"Many thanks, Lincoln." said Lisa. After Lincoln returns Floragato returns to his pokeball, the boys continued walking through Paradise Barrens.
"You know, according to legends, the ogre, I mean, Ogerpon, was seen here a lot." said Kieran.
"Maybe we'll meet it here." said Clyde.
"I hope so; it must be pretty lonely for it in a place like this." said Kieran. Moments later, they arrived at the third and final signboard.
"Here it is." said Lincoln.
"Hey, Lincoln; you think before we take the selfie, we can have another battle?" asked Kieran. "I want to see how strong I've gotten."
"Sure, Kieran; I'll battle you." said Lincoln. Moments later, Lincoln and Clyde were facing each other while Clyde watched. "So, how many Pokemon are we using?"
"How does four Pokemon each sound?" asked Kieran.
"Sounds good to me." said Lincoln.
"I'll be rooting for you, Linky!" said Iono. Lincoln and Kieran each pull out a pokeball. Kieran throws his, letting out his Furret, while Lincoln lets out his Monferno.
"Monferno, use Mach Punch!" said Lincoln. His Monferno moves at Furret at incredible speed and punches the Furret across its face, dealing super effective damage.
"Furret, use Dig!" said Kieran. Furret suddenly tunnels underground, making Lincoln and Monferno look around for it.
"Get ready, Monferno." said Lincoln. Suddenly, Furret pops up from besides Monferno and slams into him, dealing super effective damage. "Hurry and use Flame Wheel before Furret tries Dig again!" Monferno does a fiery somersault at Furret and collides with him, knocking it out.
"Aw, man." said Kieran.
"Don't give up no matter what, Kieran!" said Lincoln. A look of determination appears on Kieran's face before he returns his Furret to its pokeball; after putting it back on his waist, he pulls off another one and tosses it, releasing his Poliwhirl.
"Poliwhirl, use Mud Shot!" said Kieran. His Poliwhirl launches a glob of mud at Monferno, dealing super effective damage, and decreases his speed.
"Cool! I want a Pokemon that uses mud!" said Lana.
"Monferno, use Leer!" said Lincoln. Monferno gives Poliwhirl an icy stare, making its defense weaker.
"Poliwhirl, use Bubble Beam!" said Kieran. Poliwhirl releases a barrage of bubbles at Monferno, dealing enough super effective damage to him to knock him out.
"Poor Monferno." said Leni.
"You're gonna pay for that, buster!" said Lola.
"Leave Kieran alone!" said Lincoln. "It was bound to happen like in other Pokemon battles." Kieran smiles at Lincoln defending him.
"Sorry." said Lola. Lincoln returns his Monferno to his pokeball.
"I'm proud of how well you battled, Monferno." said Lincoln with a kind smile that made Iono blush.
"You're so kind to your Pokemon, cutie." said Iono, making Lincoln blush. Lincoln then puts his Monferno's pokeball back on his waist, pulls off another one and tosses it, releasing his Pawmot.
"Pawmot, use Spark!" said Lincoln. Pawmot charges at Poliwhirl while electrcity covers her body and slams into it, dealing super effective damage and more, thanks to Monferno weakening its defense earlier.
"Poliwhirl, use Mud Shot again!" said Kieran. His Poliwhirl launches another glob of mud at Pawmot, hitting her, dealing super effective damage, and lowering her speed.
"Pawmot, use Quick Attack!" said Lincoln. Pawmot moves quickly at Poliwhirl and slams into it, sending it flying to a stop at Kieran's feet, unconscious.
"This match is getttng good!" said Lynn Jr. Kieran returns his Poliwhirl to its pokeball.
"You were great, Poliwhirl!" said Kieran. He then puts Poliwhirl's pokeball back on his waist, then pulls off another one and throws it, releasing his Yanma.
"Pawmot, use Thunder Shock!" said Lincoln, making Pawmot release a jolt of electricity at Yanma.
"Use Detect!" said Kieran. A glint appears in Yanma's eyes, then it dodges the incoming electric attack.
"How did that Yanma dodge the electricity?" asked Lisa.
"Detect allows the Pokemon using it to dodge any attack." said Lincoln.
"Yanma, use Air Cutter!" said Kieran. Yanma flaps its wings, releasing a blade of air that lands a critical hit on Pawmot.
"This battle is getting good, Kieran!" said Lincoln with excitement.
"I know, right?" Kieran replied.
"But it's not over yet." said Lincoln. "Pawmot, use Quick Attack!" Pawmot charges at Yanma with incredible speed.
"Yanma, use Detect!" said Kieran. Yanma tries to do so, but it doesn't work, resulting in Pawmot's attack hitting, dealing damage.
"Why didn't Detect work?" asked Lori.
"The more it's used in a battle, the less likely it is to work." said Lincoln.
"Yanma, try using Quick Attack!" said Kieran.
"You too, Pawmot!" said Lincoln. Both Pokemon move at each other with fast speed and slam into each other; they bounce off each other and land on the ground.
"Wow." said Luna.
"Pawmot, use Spark!" said Lincoln. His Pawmot moves at Yanma while her body was coated in electricity and collides with it, dealing super effective damage, and knocking it out.
"Pawmot did it!" said Luan.
Kieran looks with shock before returning his Yanma to its pokeball.
"You did your best, Yanma." said Kieran.
"At least it got in some good hits." said Lincoln.
"Yeah, that's true I guess." said Kieran with his mood lightened a bit. He puts Yanma's pokeball away and pulls another one off his waist; he tosses it, releasing his Dipplin.
"Dipplin should be able to easily handle electric attacks because it's part grass and part dragon; both having a resistance to them." said Clyde.
"Pawmot, use Quick Attack!" said Lincoln. His Pawmot quickly moves at Dipplin and slams into it, knocking it back a little.
"Dipplin, use Dragon Breath!" said Kieran. His Dipplin pokes its head out of its apple and releases a green energy beam from its mouth that hits Pawmot.
"Pawmot, use Quick Attack!" said Lincoln. Pawmot moves quickly towards Dipplin and rams it, knocking it back a bit.
"Dipplin, use Bullet Seed!" said Kieran. Dipplin opens its mouth and fires a barrage of seeds at Pawmot, dealing enough damage to knock her out.
"No way!" said Lynn Jr.
"Poor Pawmot." said Leni.
"Great job, Dipplin!" said Kieran, making his Pokemon turn towards him and nod. Lincoln returns his Pawmot to her pokeball.
"You were amazing, Pawmot." said Lincoln.
"Don't give up, bro!" said Lynn Jr.
"Louds never quit!" said Lynn Sr.
"Wasn't going to." said Lincoln. He puts his Pawmot's pokeball on his waist and pulls another one off; he tosses it, releasing his Charcadet.
"It's knight vs. dragon!" said Lana.
"Charcadet, use Flame Charge!" said Lincoln. His Pokemon runs at the Dipplin while coated in fire and rams into it, dealing damage, and increases his speed.
"Dipplin, use Dragon Breath!" said Kieran. Dipplin's head comes out of its apple body, and it releases a stream of green energy at Charcadet, hitting him; he suddenly starts to twitch.
"Charcadet's paralyzed, Lincoln!" said Clyde.
"That may slow us down, but it won't stop us!" said Lincoln. Charcadet uses his inner strength to break the paralysis, surprising Kieran.
"How did Charcadet do that?" asked Kieran.
"Our bond is just that strong." said Lincoln.
"That is so cool." said Iono as she looks at Lincoln with adoration.
"Charcadet, use Clear Smog!" said Lincoln. Charcadet releases a blast of smog from his mask holes that hits Dipplin, dealing super effective damage.
"Dipplin, use Dragon Tail!" said Kieran. Dipplin swings its tail while a green aura surrounded it at Charcadet, hitting him; he suddenly goes back to his pokeball.
"Come on, Charcadet!" said Lynn Jr. "Don't wimp out now!"
"He didn't do it on his own will, Lynn." said Lincoln. "Dragon Tail forces the Pokemon it's used on to either flee or return to its pokeball." Suddenly, Lycanroc comes out. "And another Pokemon will take that Pokemon's place."
"Be careful, Lincoln." said Clyde.
"Lycanroc, use Crush Claw!" said Lincoln. Lycanroc lunges at Dipplin while his front claws were glowing red and slashes Dipplin across its body, dealing damage, and weakening its defense.
"Dipplin, use Syrup Bomb!" said Kieran. DIpplin releases a glob of red candy syrup from its body which hits Lycanroc, exploding on impact, doing super effective damage, and sticks his feet to the ground, lowering his speed.
"Talk about a 'sticky situation'." said Luan. "Ha,ha,ha,ha,ha; get it?" Everyone at the Loud house and at the battle all groaned in response.
"Are your sister's jokes always like that?" asked Kieran.
"Yeah." said Clyde.
"Lycanroc, use Accelerock!" said Lincoln. Lycanroc moves at Dipplin with incredible speed as white streams of energy flow around him and he slams into it, sending it skidding across the ground, then falls back unconscious.
"You did it, Lincoln!" said Lori. Kieran lets out a sigh before he returns his Dipplin to its pokeball.
"You did your best, Dipplin." said Kieran. Lincoln returns his Lycanroc to his pokeball.
"You've gotten a lot stronger." said Lincoln as he walks over to Kieran.
"Yeah, I even managed to knock out some of your Pokemon." said Kieran with a pleased look on his face.
"Keep it up and you really will become the strongest trainer at your school." said Lincoln, making Kieran smile.
"I think it's time for our selfie." said Clyde as he walks over to his friends.
"Just hurry before that hussy, Carmine, shows up." said Iono.
"Too late!" they hear Carmine call out. The boys turned to see Carmine running over to them. "Did you three think you were just going to take that selfie without me?!"
"YOU HUSSY! I KNOW ABOUT YOU KISSING MY LINKY!" exclaimed Iono.
"Oh, you heard about that?" asked Carmine with a smirk on her face.
"IF I EVER GET TO YOU, I'LL HAVE MY LUXIO ZAP YOU WITH EVERY OUNCE OF ELECTRICITY SHE HAS!" exclaimed Iono.
"Whatever; let's just read the signboard and take the selfie." said Carmine before she sticks her tongue out at Iono, making her growl. They walked to the signboard and began to read it.
"If you see a shadowy figure approaching you outside the village at twilight, be wary; don a mask and hide your face." said Lincoln, reading the signboard.
"Do so, and whether the shadow is man or monster, you will pass each other by as fellow mask wearers." said Clyde, reading the signboard.
"If you should meet the shadow when you have no mask in hand, then pray that it is only a man." said Lincoln, reading the signboard.
"If it is, you will live to see another day, and you will remember to never forget your mask again." said Lincoln.
"But if it is the ogre, you will meet your end, as do all humans whose faces are seen by it." said Clyde. 'That's a lie!'
"Yeah, just like if anyone sees Carmine's face!" shouts Iono, making Carmine glare at her.
"Once it sees your face, your soul will be forfeit, and you shall never return to the village." said Lincoln as he finishes reading the signboard; he begins clenching a fist.
"In the old days, everyone carried masks wherever they went, and...the one who made those masks was actually me and Carmine's great, great, great grandpa's great, great, great grandpa or something." said Kieran; of course, he knew that Lincoln and Clyde knew that, he was just putting on an act so Carmine doesn't know that he overheard them back at their grandparents' house.
"Cool." said Lincoln.
"I don't really like what they wrote on this signboard here." said Kieran.
'Me neither.' Lincoln and Clyde think to themselves in unison while they and Carmine frowned.
"Just because the ogre seemed sort of scary, everyone got all afraid of it and drove it away from the village." said Kieran. "I'm pretty sure the ogre must've been lonely on its own; left all alone like that, treated like some kind of outcast."
'I know what that's like.' Lincoln thinks to himself. Lincoln's family looks down with shame, remembering treating Lincoln like that while Clyde and Iono frown.
"Come on, let's just take the photo!" said Carmine. The group walks in front of the signboard; Lincoln takes out the Roto Stick and puts his Rotom Phone on it. Everyone huddles together so they would be in the shot.
"Okay, ready?" asked Lincoln.
"Ready." replied everyone else.
"Okay, one...two...three." said Lincoln. But as he pushes the button on the Roto Stick, Carmine grabs Lincoln's head, turns his face towards her, and presses her lips against his as the picture was begin taken. Lincoln's family, Clyde, and Kieran's jaws dropped while Iono's face turned red.
"CARMINE, YOU HUSSY!" exclaimed Iono. Carmine smirks at her before she walks away, leaving Lincoln with a stunned look on his face.
"Come on, Lincoln; we got all three pictures." said Clyde. Lincoln shakes his head to regain his composure.
"Y-Yeah. Let's get back to the village; I want to get those masks I wasted my pokedollars on so I can exchange them for other masks that aren't Loyal Three ones." said Lincoln.
"Good idea." said Clyde.
Now that Lincoln and Clyde have taken photos of all three signboards, their orienteering assignment is complete. What else awaits them at their trip in the Kitakami Region continues?
