Chapter 42: Celadon City Gym Battle Erika vs Clyde
As Clyde and Ronnie Anne passed each other, neither said a word. While Clyde got set up, Ronnie Anne stood beside Lynn. The girl had a massive frown and didn't feel like talking. Lynn picked up on this and stopped Mina, who was going to say something to her. They stayed silent and just waited for Clyde's match to start.
"This is an official match between Erika of the Celadon City Gym and Clyde McBride from Royal Woods." The referee's voice was loud, clear, and echoed throughout the building. "Both trainers will be able to use four Pokemon, with only the challenger being able to switch out Pokemon. The battle is over when all of someone's Pokemon is unable to battle or one forfeits. The match begins now."
"Go Combee!" Clyde said with an uncertain voice.
"Go Hoppip," Erika said, sending a small pink creature with leaves on the top of its head. "Use Sleep Powder," she ordered unenthusiastically.
"Let's use Gust!" Clyde ordered, still sounding uncertain.
Hoppip started spreading blue powder onto the field. However, Combee started buzzing her wings faster, making a tornado. The tornado picked up all the powder and Hoppip, sending them to the ceiling. When Hoppip came down, it was knocked out.
"Hoppip is unable to battle," the referee announced. "The winner is Combee." Combee was crying happily over her win, while Clyde looked disappointed. Ronnie Anne's frown only grew, while Lynn and Mina only shook their heads.
Erika sighs after calling back her Pokemon, then sends out her next one. "Go Lombre," she said, sending out a green bipedal creature with a lily pad on its head. "Use Bubble Beam," she commanded.
"Use Gust again?" Clyde said, not enjoying this.
Lombre started to shoot a stream of bubbles out its mouth, towards Combee. Unfortunately, the Tiny Bee Pokemon made another tornado. This picked up the attack and Pokemon again, and knocked out Lombre.
"Lombre is unable to battle," the referee announced. "The winner is Combee." Combee celebrated again, with Clyde looking more disappointed. Those watching stayed silent.
Erika called back her Pokemon and sent out the next one. "Go Cottonee," she said as she sent out a ball of cotton with green wings. "Use Fairy Wind," she said.
"Uh, use Gust?" Clyde suggested, he was starting to feel bad for Erika.
The Cotton Puff Pokemon started flapping its wings, making a pink wind. However, it was absorbed into Combee's Gust. Cottonee was picked up in the Gust and knocked out like the rest.
"Cottonee is unable to battle," the referee announced. "The winner is Combee." Combee cried happily, while Clyde looked uncomfortable.
"At least someone is enjoying this," Ronnie Anne bitterly muttered. Lynn and only nodded, agreeing with the girl.
After calling back her Pokemon, the Gym Leader sent out her last Pokemon. "Go Breloom," she muttered, sending out a green and yellow bipedal mushroom creature. "Use Headbutt,"
"Okay, use Gust again," Clyde said with a lack of enthusiasm.
Breloom charged towards Combee, only to get sucked up in the tornado by the Gust. The Mushroom Pokemon hit the ceiling and was knocked out.
"Breloom is unable to battle," the referee announced while holding their hand on Clyde's side up in the air. "Combee is the winner and Clyde has won the match." Combee cheered happily, while Clyde thanked her. Lynn clapped for his victory, with Mina joining in.
"Congratulations," Erika said after recalling her Pokemon and moving to Clyde. Her voice and expression lacked any emotions. "You have earned the Rainbow Badge." She then held a rainbow badge in the shape of a flower to her.
Clyde called back Combee and took the badge. He thanked her and then walked to the others.
"I guess I'm next," Lynn said in a bored tone, walking to the battlefield.
