Chapter 4

EPOV

This isn't possible.

She can't be alive.

So if she is alive, and not a ghost, Carlisle had lied.

He told me that after she carried me to his tiny flat, and after telling Carlisle she knew his secret, she ran away, in fear of what I was about to become.

She abandoned me when I had most needed her.

Hell, I had been searching for her, after I turned. I sifted through millions of millions of government papers looking for Elissandrah Annette Jolie Masen. Nothing came up. It's like she had wanted to stay hidden from me. All I wanted was to know she was ok and alive. I hated myself for what I had become because it had been so monstrous that it scared away the only person I could trust. So many times had I prayed to God for Lyssie to come back. At some point, I don't know when, I had given up, and my hope had festered into bitterness. It made me question a lot of things, like "Why did she know what vampires were.", and "Why did she know to come to Carlisle. Most of all, "Why did she leave?"

But she's alive, so what am I supposed to do now?

I don't even know.

Should I forgive her? Should I love her? Should I hate her? Should I yell and scream and shout and let out the torrent of emotions and pain she had caused me?

How many times had I thrown a penny in a fountain and whispered, "Lyssie, come back."?

How many times had I wished upon a star and whispered, "Lyssie, come back."?

How many times had I held Arabelle at night and whispered, "Lyssie, come back."?

Now, time has shown me that no matter how many pennies I throw, how many stars I wish on, how many nights I hold a dilapidated teddy bear that once belonged to a girl who had disappeared, will she ever come back.

I had lost all hope in a tiny cemetery in the suburbs of Chicago when I had found a gravestone:

Here lies

Elissandrah Annette Jolie Masen

1901-1920

Beloved daughter, cherished twin sister, and dear friend

But, clearly, I was wrong.

She's alive.

But she left me.

She faked her death.

Why?

All those years we had grown up together, sister and brother, had that not meant anything to her?

As I sat there in the entrance hall with Alice, I was trying to work through my shock, but then it hit me.

I slowly looked up at Alice to see her aghast and pitying face. I had been unconsciously projecting to her. She heard everything.

I turned my face away and continued rerunning the recent events in my head.

Lyssie had slammed the heavy, marble doors open, which was an impossible feat for a girl of her stature.

She yelled for the Volturi to wait, dramatically. Typical Lyssie.

She, somehow, got away with silencing (and disrespecting) the most powerful vampire in existence, not to mention that she had hushed the entire gathering with just her entrance. No other measly vampire would've made out of the palace alive with an attitude like hers.

Strangely, the entire Volturi had seemed scared of her.

They were scared of Lyssie, the girl who would cling to her teddy bear at night till she was sixteen, saying that she was justified because of the nightmares.

She looked like a queen, commanding and when her eyes gazed upon our trio, she double-taked, and that was when I realized that the girl covered in black was my Elissandrah.

I choked on nothing and I slipped into shock and whispered, "Lyssie."

"Ahem", coughed Alice quietly.

I jerked towards her.

"Edward, that girl you say is your twin sister, but that's… not possible."

"How so, Alice, don't you think that I would recognize my own sister?", I spat back

"No, it's not that… It's just that she was the girl… You know what, never mind."

She then started to think about going home and all sorts of mundane things to hide what she had really thought.

Carlisle, escorted by Felix, walked in.

"Carlisle, I saw a girl, about my age. She seems much more powerful and respected than Jane, on the same rank as Aro, Caius, or Marcus. Who is she?"

His face turned grim as he began to answer.

"There have been.. Legends of a girl known as "The Little Princess of Volterra". Nobody knows where she came from or who or what she is. She is the Volturi's most precious treasure. I do not believe she is allowed outside of the gates of Volterra without a chaperone of sorts in fear that she would run away. Yet, they treat her with utmost devotion and respect."

"Why had I never heard of such a legend before?"

"Now is not the time, son. I will explain later."

Alec and Demetri strode in through the doors.

" Will Alice and Edward Cullen make their way to Lady Elissandrah, The Little Princess of Volterra's chambers. She has requested your presence."

I glanced at Alice and we nodded at each other.

Together, we walked to the room where my long lost twin sister was waiting for us.
