To anything other than a Dalek, such a landing as the individual had made would surely have been fatal. Hurtling through the atmosphere of the planet at high speed, outer casing burning hot & the occupant desperately activating systems & fail-safes to ensure it did not cook to death or die on impact.
Due to these fail-safes, the crater the Dalek created upon landing was far smaller than expected & less damage was done to the surroundings. For nearly 10 hours, however, the creature remained motionless inside the impact zone.
Inside, the mutant was running systems checks, diagnostics, assessing damage & learning, learning that the time experiment had succeeded!
It's current predicament, marooned on an alien world, possibly trillions of light-years from Skaro, perhaps even millions of years from it's own time, precluded the Dalek from calling the experiment a total success.
There had been a plan for such a situation as this however & all it had to do was wait. It would, however, need to make a reconnoitre of the area & create for itself a base, a safe haven to while away however long it took the Supreme Council scientists to locate where it had arrived. After ten hours, the Daleks eye stalk & dome swivelled to & fro, examining it's surroundings.
"Scanning environment" it said "Atmosphere normal, only primitive creatures in close proximity"
These "primitive" creatures largely consisted of birds, some oddly similar to crows as alien to the jungle surroundings as the Dalek was, others more alike to parrots & other exotic avians. The birds themselves had long since calmed to the strange visitors arrival & now either ignored it entirely or eyed it with suspicion.
The Dalek further examined the vicinity, recognising stone steps & an archway. A stream babbled furiously nearby & the jungle had long since resumed the fervent activity of animal life.
Further behind the impact zone, the Dalek could see the steps led upward & further off into the jungle. There was a faint outline of a building peeking out from the tops of the trees.
"A primitive place of worship" it said, it's harsh staccato voice joined by the cacophony of insects & bird calls. "Beginning examination of immediate area"
Righting itself with the aid of elevation boosters in it's underside & out of the crater, the Dalek manoeuvred across the stream & began ascending the stone steps.
The steps leading to the "place of worship" proved a far more tumultuous & rocky road, with occasional sections blocked by fallen rocks or misshapen by simple degradation of time. In an effort to preserve power, despite the extra energy cells sequestered in it's lower skirt section, the Dalek deigned to manoeuvre around such obstacles.
"Power must be conserved for the fabrication of materials. "It had harshly whispered to itself whilst examining it's first obstacle.
The darkly red sun hung low in the sky , but the damp heat of the forest was no less uncomfortable, even for a Dalek. This particular Dalek having often preferred cooler, even freezing temperatures to the harsh heat of jungles & deserts.
As the Dalek ascended, slowly, it became aware that the dome of the building it had seen from the impact zone was but a smaller outlier of a much vaster building, extending far beyond in every direction than it could see. What appeared to be the main building rose to what seemed to be at least 200 or more metres in height, a green-stained & steeple-dome commanding the most attention. The temple was similar to various Earth monasteries from it's south-eastern areas, most of which were registered in Dalek data banks from the failed occupation of Earth.
However, what proved of equal interest was the grotesque statues & gargoyles that lined the decrepit steps. They varied in size & shape, yet the creatures depicted all shared a certain similarity. Smooth or ridged carapaces, vicious maws, sometimes with protruding pharyngeal jaws & all with a bio-mechanical design. Judging by the effigies alone offered no clear insight as to whether they were natural, artificial or some mixture of the two. No such creature had ever been encountered by the Dalek Empire in it's expansion, but given the Daleks displacement in time, this could have been some creature that existed long, long before any sentient life, if it existed at all. More likely it belonged to the mind of some deranged or warped artist.
"Humanoids are prone to such grotesquery". It thought, contemptuously.
Most of the statues & protruding gargoyles were well worn, with finer detail having been lost with the passage of time.
One, out of few specimens, was in better shape & offered a more draconic appearance than the others. The Dalek stopped to observe it, the large wings spread outwards accompanied a great, horned head-crest & to the mutant, it seemed reminiscent of a demon belonging to Kaled mythology. The Khash'tek, a soul-devouring demon that appeared from the skies in the days when Kaleds & Thals lived in peace, spreading plague & converting the dead into servants to do it's bidding.
The Dalek found itself ruminating on the demons modus operandi. Was that where the Supreme Council had formed it's techniques for planetary invasion, from the bones & stories of that which came before?
Interrupting it's reverie, the Dalek's eye stalk swivelled skyward
"Twilight approaching" It stated. "I must continue forward to the temple before dark"
The Dalek, with one last lingering look upon the dragon, glided forward & upward over the cracked & crumbling stone steps towards the ancient temple...
The upper levels the Dalek traversed were uninteresting, at least from a Dalek point of view. The temple interior differed little from various other such places, even on Earth, until the Dalek arrived at what it believed was the Inner Chamber, presumably in the vast dome the Dalek had decided was the main building.
Oddly, it observed the design of an Earth cathedral with a lengthy nave, transepts & an altar. The Dalek moved up the gloomy nave & stopped looking upon the centre point between the two transepts. There hung a humanoid looking figure, a shadowy half-light emanating from above it, & on either side of the figure, upon a low arch, stood two identical statues of the creatures that had lined the temple steps, these in pristine condition compared to it's fellows.
The creatures were here depicted as jet black, standing at 8 feet tall, with smooth, domed carapaces & 6-fingered, spindly hands, their arms crossed, hands placed on either shoulder as if a corpse in repose. A lengthy, ridged tail, tapering to a pointed barb, coiled around each of the figures lithe limbs.
A faint mist permeated the Inner Chamber & the Daleks sensory systems worked frantically to analyse it. Whilst waiting, the Dalek continued to observe the effigies.
Despite being only carvings, the creatures looked powerful & yet almost frail. It wondered just what damage such a creature could do...
The Daleks sensory device pinged for attention. The mist was safe to breathe, but appeared to have another function. Various pheromones were scattered throughout the fog & seemed to react to the presence of the Dalek in the chamber.
Seeing that the mist permeated from a doorway in the north transept, the Dalek trundled forward, following the mist...
