Chapter 1: Awakening
Antony awoke a gentle but constant prodding. He groaned because he did not expect to live. He remembered drowning, sinking in the ocean. Everything was so fast and sudden, and his vision had gone black.
"Aye…dragon. Wake up!"
The prodding continued. The voice was feminineand sharp. Antony blinked several times and wondered what was going on. He felt confused. He wasn't a dragon; he was human.
"Wake up, dragon!"
Antony opened his eyes. At first, his vision was blurry. A dark shape hovered over him and a pleasant warm scent filled his nose. The blurriness faded and sight returned to him. He gasped as he came face to face with a dragon. The dragon was blue and sleek; her horns protruded from her head and curled at the tips. She stared down at him with large green eyes. Her expression showed worry, which quickly changed to relief.
"Thank the Ancestors!" she cried. "I found you on the beach and dragged you to shore. Not sure where you came from, but you're alive."
"Alive…really?" Antony said, still confused.
"Yes, dragon. You're alive."
"But I'm human."
"Human? No…you're a dragon. Scales, wings, claws, you have it all."
"WHAT?!"
Antony bolted up right. Shaking his head, he tried to take a step forward but stumbled and fell. Sand caked his face. He rose again and tried to walk. Again, he fell. What's going on? Antony mused. I shouldn't be having trouble walking.
He looked about himself, trying to make sense of the world. A pink sky lay above him, filled with clouds. The sun rested on the horizon where the ocean and the sky met. When his eyes lowered to the waters, he saw a yellow dragon gazing back at him. Antony gaped at the view.
"Believe me now?"
Antony turned back to the female dragon. She looked at him with a concerned expression. He noted her appearance and features and realized that he had been transformed into a dragon and transported to a new world. He wanted to dispute it, but it was useless.
"I…am a dragon," Antony said. "This is …wow."
"Yes, a lost dragon at that," the female said, walking over to him. "Who are you?"
"Antony."
"Antony? Okay. I am Kehlani." The blue dragon smiled. "You have a home? A family close by?"
"No." Antony looked down at his four legs, scaly skin, and claws. He flexed his claws and then looked up at Kehlani. "I have no home or family."
"No home or family?"
Antony shook his head.
"Huh? Well…I can't leave you out here alone," Kehlani replied. "Come with me. I'll ask my Mom and Dad if you can stay with me and my little brother Emile."
"You would do that?"
Kehlani drew closer. She placed a paw on Antony's cheek and patted it. Antony smelled her scent and felt a little more at ease in spite of his confusion and frustration.
"I sure would," she replied. "Besides, you need help. A lot of help."
Antony chuckled. "Y-Yeah…I do."
Kehlani nodded. Turning slowly she began to trot down the beach. Her steps were swift and agile. Antony watched her before following her. Kehlani made her way further down the beach and toward a collection of stone buildings, wooden docks, and ships.
Antony wondered how he even had been put in this new world. He remembered going to the beach alone. He had gone out to the ocean, to enjoy the sun and surf. But strong waves had swept him away and he eventually was carried away and sunk under the waters. Now, he was a dragon, in a new world.
A new body, a new life, Antony told himself. And a new friend. This is a lot to take in.
