Author's Note: I wish I did, but I do not own Harry Potter. A shame, yes, I know.
So, I've decided on her House. Am I a little disappointed nobody helped? Yes, but in the end it would've been helpful suggestions, and not anything otherwise. Harry is still going to have her back, already the story is changing, as Harry and Draco aren't enemies. Though, please review if you see any helpful suggestions or things you'd like to see with Violet, yeah?
Violet had jumped when her name was called. Surely, she should've expected it. After all, she'd requested Snape to ask the professors to call her 'Miss Everglass' instead of Potter so if they were addressing one and not the other, both wouldn't speak up. And she was older than Harry, if only by a few minutes.
Still, it was a bit disrupting as she made her way to the stool, her blank eyes glancing over the older students and what was left of the first years to be sorted before her gaze was overtaken by the rim of the hat.
'Ah, a Potter I see. Where to put you...you don't match your parents at all, girl. A conundrum, if I say so myself.' Violet hummed under her breath at the hat's words in her mind, her thoughts of each House running through her. She'd suit Slytherin best, but ultimately, it was the hat which would determine her fate.
'If I may, I've already thought of my personality and interests. I've narrowed it down to either Ravenclaw or Slytherin, the latter being the most matching. If it helps. It is not I who determines where I go, though I understand you take choices in mind,' she replied to it silently. She was polite, but percise.
She was nearing a hatstall when the hat finally called out her House, the enchanted item having been going through her personality and what thoughts it could gleam through the firm shield in her mind to make it's decision.
"Slytherin!" The hat shouted out at last, her new House politely clapping. Draco was beaming as Violet handed the hat over to Professor McGonagall, the blonde nudging over the boy seated next to him to make room for her.
Taking her seat with a polite smile on her mask, she nodded at the introductions given to her, sending a smile to Theodore Nott and Daphne Greengrass. They'd never been rude or ignored her at the gatherings and parties she'd gone to when younger, after all. Pansy got a nod of acknowledgement, the pugfaced girl having begrudgingly become cordial after Violet's eighth birthday.
All too soon, her attention was called to her brother as he was sorted into Gryffindor, a proud smile on her lips. The Patil twins, likely because they didn't have middle names, were sorted, as well as a few more students she either didn't recognize, or didn't factor into her plans. Finally, Blaise Zabini was sorted to Slytherin, and the ceremony was complete.
While McGonagall put the hat and stool away, it left the students time to get to know their new Housemates. Finally though, the stern Gryffindor's House Matron had taken her seat and Professor Dumbledore stood up, beaming down at all of them.
"Welcome!" He'd cried out, quieting the students from their chitchat. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you."
Violet couldn't help but snicker quietly as everybody seemed to clap or cheer. The tables were now filled with food, and as Dumbledore had finished speaking, Violet was already filling her plate. Carrots, peas, and potatoes were added first, gravy and a bit of roast chicken coming after. Like nearly everybody else in her House, she ate with polite bites, cutting her meat up and making sure her mouth was clean before she bothered to answer any questions. Everybody her year had already known she wasn't raised with her brother, but now they were making an effort to get to know her, instead of merely being Snape's Ward.
Dessert came and went, Violet eating a piece of pie only to appease Draco, who'd noticed she hadn't taken seconds to eat like everybody else. Being as small as she was, it was simply a case of being too full to eat any more, but she'd eaten after he'd expressed concern.
At last, the banquet was done and over with, Dumbledore once more getting to his feet as the hall fell silent.
"Ahem- just a few more words now that we are all fed and watered. I have a few start-of-term notices to give you. First years should note that the forest on the grounds is forbidden to all pupils. And a few of our older students would do well to remember that as well," he paused, Violet noting that his twinkling eyes had flashed in the direction of the Weasley twins.
"I have also been asked by Mr. Filch, the caretaker, to remind you all that no magic should be used between classes in the corridors." Violet scoffed under her breath, already knowing that wouldn't last, simply because of the rivalries. "Quidditch trials will be held in the second week of the term. Anyone interested in playing for their House teams should contact Madam Hooch." Here, the Professor mentioned nodded at the group of students with a smirk, her hawkish eyes raking over them all.
"And finally, I must tell you that this year, the third-floor corridor on the right-hand side is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to die a very painful death." Violet scowled a little bit, glancing over at Snape who had nodded. While it seemed Violet couldn't speak of things to happen, she could give light warnings and clues that she knew more than most. As such, she was already aware of what was being protected by the school.
She sang the school song quickly, her green eyes instead staring at the Weasley twins when they were the last ones to finish. And then they were dismissed for bed, the first year Slytherins following their prefect down into the dungeons. She'd need to learn the warming charm quickly, as it would be needed once the air became cooler. Violet surmised she'd spend a good few weeks in the library, learning all she'd need for living in the dungeons.
The prefects explained the rules. Boys and girls were not permitted to visit each other's dormitories. Prefects could in the event of an emergency. The password to get in would change every fortnight. Curfew was at ten in the evening, and at six in the morning they could leave. Leaving during that eight hour stretch would get them sent to their Head of House unless they had a proper reason, like detention ran long and they had a note from their professor. It was expected that students be asleep before midnight.
And then the female Slytherin prefect led the girls up to their assigned rooms. Due to the odd number of girls, Violet and Daphne were assigned to one room, while Tracy Davis, a brown-haired and blue eyed girl that hadn't had much presence in the books or movies Violet remembered, was assigned with Pansy Parkinson and Millicent Bulstrode.
Looking at the two beds in the room, Violet hummed a little bit under her breath, going to sit on the one with her familiar Midnight. "Looks like we're dormmates." She said to Daphne, flicking her wand to unpack her bags and set out her nightgown. Magic was intention, for the most part, when it came to simple charms like that and her hair. "I look forward to our school years." She added, once they'd both changed.
Daphne had merely chuckled, nodding her head. "It's good to see you again, Violet. I believe it was last Easter when we saw each other last?" Violet had nodded, giving small talk that if overheard, would arouse suspicion until both girls were starting to yawn.
"If you wake before I do, just open my curtains. I'll likely be sitting with my brother during meals we don't have to sit with our House." Violet had said sleepily, waving a hand when Daphne went to warn against it. "He's my brother. I've finally reunited with him, and there's nothing in this world or the next that will stop me from being there for him. Honestly, Daphne, the muggles he was sent to are plain awful. If I was sent to them as well, I'd have been put in Azkaban before my third birthday for murdering them." she'd said, Midnight already curling up next to her hip. "But anyway, I'm glad I'm rooming with you instead of Parkinson. I'm going to get to sleep now, I expect tomorrow is going to have it's own difficulties, as classes start right away."
Violet woke up when her curtains were opened the next morning, glancing over at Daphne who was already ready for the day. With a grunt and a sigh, she got ready herself, slipping a headband into her hair to keep it out of her face. A scrunchie on her wrist for if she'd need to tie it up, uniform and robes on, she sighed again as she slipped her satchel over her shoulder, her books already inside and her wand holstered.
"Right. Time for breakfast then." she said, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. "See you in our first class, Daphne." she added as they parted ways in the common room, Greengrass opting instead to wait for others. Midnight strolled beside Violet as she made her way back up to the Great Hall, mentally catalogging locations she passed so she wouldn't get too lost.
Instead of forcing Professor Snape to interact with Harry so early, she went to him at the Staff table for her class schedule, before heading towards the Gryffindor table, sitting where some other first years were at. "Can I sit with you guys? I'd like to stay with my brother if possible during meal times." she asked them, her hands up in a defensive motion. "I won't give anything away, and I'll pretend I can't hear any Quidditch talk should I do. I just want to be with Harry." she explained when they seemed uneasy. Finally though, she got a nod, and with a smile she took a seat, eating her toast and jam silently and not paying the Gryffindors any attention.
When it became clear that Harry overslept, she spoke up, noting that Harry and Ron weren't present, so she was leaving. She thanked them for letting her sit with them, before making her way to her first class.
It seemed that she'd have Herbology with the Ravenclaws, Potions and flying lessons with the Gryffindors, and most other classes would be with her own House. So she went to Draco, who already had his books and wand, and together with a few other Slytherins, mostly Crabbe, Goyle, as well as Pike, Nott, and Greengrass, they headed off to Charms, which would be their first class.
Classes came pretty easily for the most part. Reading and learning proper ways to hold their wands, small homeworks for their first week. As requested, she was called 'Miss Everglass' in class. Defense Against the Dark Arts, however, became a test of her patience, even Draco noticing her dislike of their Professor. Usually, the days she had it she spent extra time in the library, often going above and beyond in learning all she could from books instead of in class, where she never raised a hand but got called upon anyway.
She'd earned their house twenty extra points in that class by the time the weekend came about, not that Violet seemed happy about it. Voldemort had spared her. She imagined that if he had survived, she might've had to grow up with the twit, who probably would've taken her from the house to raise into his puppet. She had no need for His recognition.
Potions, it seemed, was the one class she excelled in, along with Charms and Transfiguration. Those classes she enjoyed, even if she did send Snape occasional pouts for bullying her brother. She got it, she did, but she did wish he'd cool off a little bit.
Likewise, the Flying lessons were simply divine, Violet seeming to have an inborn knack for it, though she had no wish to join the violent sport of Quidditch. Instead, she asked Madame Hooch if she could simply fly about once she could bring her own broom to the school. After getting permission, so long as it was on the weekends, within school grounds, and she was supervised by a Professor, Violet's smile didn't dissipate until dinner.
Harry, Ron, and Draco were friendly with each other too, the three of them thick as thieves before too long into the first month of school. She and Hermione often met together in the library for studying, often checking each other's homework. All five of them, for not bringing House Rivalry into their personal lives, raised five points each for their Houses when Professor Flitwick walked past the two tables they'd been working at.
Everything seemed to be going well. She'd even somewhat became friendly with Longbottom, who helped her with Herbology when she'd been revising her answers for homework at the Gryffindor table. Key players were falling into her circle, her plans were coming along nicely. She should've known some things she couldn't change. Halloween had arrived.
Author's Note: What do you think so far? I'm curious to your thoughts. What do you think is going to happen on Halloween? Will she get a gift left for her at Christmas like Harry? Or should she become friends with Fred and George, hint that she knows about the map, and see if she can dublicate it? I'm so curious as to how this is all going to work out!
