Quirks...

Such a fantastic thing! Little kids go crazy at the prospect of having a good quirk. It's basically a superpower or special ability that any person can have, but each varies from person to person.

Stretchy limbs, flight, animal-like characteristics—you name it—it's probably a Quirk.

Many people from a young age want to be one thing, and that's a hero. Ever since All Might's debut, more and more of the youth in the world strive to be like him. Well, I can't blame them; he's the greatest hero in Japan.

Strong, brave, and always smiling, he is the epitome of what being a hero means.

Many dream to be like him; some fail, while others pick up their torch and continue that harsh journey of reaching his status.

Unfortunately, not everyone is equal in this world. Life is a cruel mistress; for every four people with quirks, there's one who doesn't. There's a name for people without a special power to make them unique.

Quirkless..

They make it sound like a disease, like we're some kind of plague on the world. In a sense, I guess they were right.

You're either born lucky enough to be blessed with a power or you get your face shoved in the shit pile that is reality. Corruption spreads through the world like cancer, be it the Hero Committee, the Police Force, or educational institutions. It's everywhere.

A young man can be seen standing in a dimly lit room, the walls adorned with hauntingly familiar family photos. His eyes look wide in terror. A soft, mournful wind whispered through the room, carrying the scent of iron. He couldn't escape this feeling of dread, and as he turned, the room shifted.

A large lump formed in his throat as he stared at the gruesome sight that his family had encountered. Their faces, frozen in horror and despair, haunted him from every corner. His legs begin to feel weak as they give out from underneath him. He falls to the floor in a heap and stares at the sight before him.

His little sister's doll lay abandoned on the blood-stained carpet, a chilling reminder of innocence lost. Leo tried to scream and cry out, but his voice failed him, and the room remained silent except for the relentless whispers that seemed to emanate from the walls themselves. The whisper's fragments, like fragments of a broken memory, are impossible to decipher.

The quiet sound of voices was drawing him in. Slowly, Leo stands up, compelled by an inexplicable force. The sound of glass crunching under his feet as he got closer. There he found a shattered family portrait; the glass cracked and fragmented all over the carpet below. His eyes travel the portrait to see his mother's warm smile, his father's reassuring gaze, his little sister's playful laughter, and his little brother smiling in joy—all etched into the photograph, forever trapped in time.

As Leo reached out to touch the portrait, it crumbled to dust in his hands. The whispers grew louder, now forming words, though still too cryptic to grasp. It was as if the past itself was trying to communicate with him.

Then, a cold presence enveloped him, and he turned to find a figure cloaked in shadows, their faces concealed. They beckoned him closer, causing Leo to hesitate, his heart hammering away. Despite his fear, there was an almost familiar air that hung around the shadow figure.

"Why didn't you save us, Leo?" A torrent of voices said at once, his eyes widening at this.

"W-What?" He croaked out, and the figure took a step closer to him.

"You let us die, Leo.." Again, a torrent of voices assaulted him. He covered his ears and squeezed his eyes shut to try and drown them out.

"Shut up.." He says through gritted teeth that a tight feeling engulfs his throat. Leo opens his eyes to see the shadow figure's hand wrapped around his throat. It lifts him off the ground and begins to squeeze.

"IT'S YOUR FAULT!" The voice shouted at him. Leo jolted awake, his body drenched in a cold sweat, gasping for air. His eyes scan his surroundings frantically to see he's on a train; nearby people look at him confused or weirded out. Slowly but surely, he regains his breath and wipes the sweat from his brow.

"It was just a dream. It was just a dream." He repeats to himself quietly as he slowly calms down. Pulling out his phone, he puts on some music as the scenery passes him by.

Leo can be seen walking through a gate with stone walls. The sign that hangs on one of the pillars says, 'Aldera Junior High'

He runs a hand through his hair as he trudges through the front door, entering the building. His eyes glance around as he takes in his surroundings.

"Excuse me, may I ask who you are?" A feminine voice calls out to him. He looks at the source to see a middle-aged woman looking at him from behind a counter. Leo slowly makes his way over to her with a neutral expression on his face.

"I'm not sure. Today's my first day; I just transferred here from America." The woman looks down at her computer and types away for a minute before looking back up at him with a curious look.

"You're name?" She asks, raising an eyebrow, and he stares at her briefly before responding.

"Leo.." The woman nods and types it into the computer before a nearby printer starts making noise. A paper slowly emerges from the inner mechanism with all of Leo's information; she grabs it and scans her eyes over it.

"Leo Blackwood, age 16. Class 3-J, if you'll follow me." She says that, walking from around the counter and down a hall, Leo heaves a sigh and slowly follows behind her. They walk in complete silence until she stops before a door. She lightly taps her knuckle against the wood before sliding partially open. She slips her head through the small hole and speaks before pulling it free.

"Welcome to Aldera; this will be your homeroom from now on. If you need anything, I'll be behind the front desk near the entrance." She says it in an almost emotionless voice before bowing and walking off.

The sound of the door sliding across its track catches his attention. Turning, he sees an older man with a maroon, almost brown suit; he has blonde hair on top of his serious-looking face.

"So, you're the transfer student? Alright, since you came on such short notice, you'll have to stand in the back of the room. We don't have an extra desk for you, so you'll have to make due."

Leo nods his head. The teacher turns on his heel and walks back into the room, leaving the door open. He turns and waves his hand at him. The young man slowly walks in, gaining the attention of all his new classmates.

"Everyone, welcome. You're have a new classmate. He's a transfer student from the United States, so treat him with respect and all that jazz." The teacher finishes like he didn't even care if they did or not.

"An extra from America? Heh, I'll have fun crushing you." Leo glances over at the smug voice and takes in his appearance.

He has ash-blonde hair and red, piercing eyes. He's leaned back in his chair with his feet up on the desk. He has a smug smile on his face as he looks, Leo up and down. The young man looks at him with an irritated look but keeps his head up.

"Name's Leo." He says it loud enough for everyone to hear him. The students look at him, expecting more, but that's all he says. The teacher pinches the bridge of his nose and sighs loudly.

"Go stand in the back so I can begin class." He says like he was uninterested by the introduction of the new student. Leo does as he's told and walks, but his eyes fall on a frail-looking young man with a messy tuft of green hair. His eyes meet Leo, and he quickly looks down.

Leo raises an eyebrow, confused by the fearful look he received, but puts it in the back of his mind for now.

"All right, since you're all in your third year, it's time for you to think seriously about your future. I'll pass out handouts for your future plans now, but he shuffles through a handful of papers before a smirk graces his face. He tosses them into the air, causing them to scatter.

"You're all pretty much planning to go into the hero course, right?" He shouts in a rather enthusiastic voice, and a sudden uproar erupts around the class room as each student but him, the green-haired kid, and the ash-blonde use their quirks.

One kid pulls his eye out really far, another's face swells up into a pinkish color, and another's fingers stretch out extremely far.

"Yes, yes, you all have wonderful quirks! But using your powers at school is against the rules!" He scolds but still has a smile on his face. Leo looks around and takes note to memorize everyone's quirk; an arrogant scoff echo's loudly in the room.

"Hey, teach. Don't include me among this group of trash! They'll be lucky enough to become some sidekicks." The same ash-blonde-haired guy leans forward with a smug smirk as he displays his superiority.

"That was uncalled for, Katsuki!"

"Yeah, yeah!"

Shouts erupt from the class as the others' voices voice their displeasure at being called trash. Leo's face hardens at those words as he quietly listens.

"Did you say something Extra's? You should all shut up and fade into the background like the garbage you are!" He shouts mockingly at everyone.

"Oh, if I remember correctly, you want to go to U.A. High, right, Bakugo?" The teacher asks as his eyes scan over a clipboard. He grins smugly around the room before jumping out of his seat and landing on his desk. Small sparks start to come out of his hands.

"I aced all the mock tests; they will have no choice but to accept me! I'm the only one at this school who could possibly get into the U.A! I will become the most powerful. I'll definitely surpass All Might and become the top hero! Katsuki says pride comes out of every pore of his body. The teacher smiles at his self-professed rant, but it disappears as he notices another name in the forums. He looked up and saw the young man in question as he was trying to make himself smaller and smaller.

"Oh yeah.. Midoriya wanted to go to U.A., too, right?" The teacher says it nonchalantly, and the air suddenly shifts upon hearing this. Everyone looks at the green-haired boy and breaks out into laughter. Leo looks around confused but can feel the hostility aimed at Izuku.

"T-T-They got rid of that rule. There's just no precedent." He says he was trying to defend himself when a hand slammed onto his desk with a small explosion. Leo's face hardens, clenches his hands into fists, and he slowly pushes off the wall.

"Hey, Deku! You're below the rejects! You're quirkless! How can you even stand in the same ring as me?" He shouts loudly as he glares at Izuku like he's prey. Leo steps between the two and glares at the ash blonde.

"If you want to hurt him, you'll have to get through me." He says this through gritted teeth as he tries to fight a feeling that nags him in the back of his head. Bakugo looks up at him and glares, his arrogance getting in the way of thinking rationally.

"Get out of the way, stupid foreigner! This quirkless trash—how dare you defend him?! How many times did I say never to try? How Many?!" He shouts as he glares at Izuku. The young man crawls backwards with wide eyes until he hits the wall.

"I-I don't want to compete with you, Kacchan! I've wanted to be a hero since I was a kid, and I'll never know if I don't try. I want to try. Izuku says shakily, his face displaying fear created by the constant harassment and name-calling. Leo clenches his hands into shaky fists as his eyes begin to slightly glow a dark red.

"I've been here for a few minutes and can already tell that you bastards don't deserve to be heroes. You all are Quirk supremist garbage." He says that as his quirk starts to do the talking for him, the veins in his eyes glow red as his anger increases.

"Ha? Last time I checked, Japan was superior to America. We have the number one hero." A young man with extended fingers Quirk speaks smugly, and Leo scoffs, but before he could respond, a hand comes in over him and lightly taps him on the head. He follows the long arm to see the teacher looking at them with a serious look.

"Okay, that's enough. Bakugo, sit down. Leo, go stand in the back." He says it in a tired voice. Bakugo scoffs and walks back to his seat. Leo walks over to Midoriya, kneels down, and helps him to his feet.

"If anyone tries to mess with you, tell me, and I'll deal with it." He whispers quietly to the green-haired teen. He nods nervously before slowly walking back to his scorched desk.

The teacher begins to start with the lessons for the day, but Leo's mind is drawn elsewhere. He remembers when he was thought to have been quirkless and how bad it was for him.

-Flashback-

The sun hangs low on the horizon, casting long shadows over a school. On the ground, a young boy can be seen as he grabs his stomach in pain. A look of anger is on his face as he grits his teeth and looks up at his attackers, a group of people who think quirks make them superior to the quirkless.

"That's what quirkless trash gets! You should learn your place." One shouts as he kicks Leo in the stomach again. The young boy falls onto his back and writhes in pain.

"Y-your a group of cowards..." He says in a shaky voice that as he slowly stands up, a group of onlookers begins to form, as it's that time of day where they teach the quirkless trash a lesson. Most were cheering for Leo's attackers; some were wishing death on the young boy, but he swallowed his fear and squared off, doing his best to block out the mocking laughter.

The fight began, and Leo moved with surprising grace. But what he lacked were the numbers. He was easily overwhelmed, but he pushed through. He took a hit to the ribs but refused to crumble; he knew he couldn't show weakness. Pain has been a constant companion in the hard life he's led.

Leo turned to the boy and headbutted him, knocking him unconscious. The other three growled in anger at seeing this damn quirkless garbage raise a hand and fight back. One tries to use his quirk but doesn't have enough practice to activate it.

The crowd cheers and taunts blended into a chaotic symphony, but Leo tuned it out and focused on the fight. As the fight raged on, he found his second wind, delivering a series of heavy blows to one of the bullies faces. For a moment, it felt like he was winning, but just when victory seemed within his grasp, a powerful blow sent him crashing to the ground.

A burning feeling formed in his head from the sudden, heavy blow. Looking up with an unfocused gaze, he sees that one of the bullies used his quirk. His right fist had changed shape and become a hammer. He looked down at it, surprised, before a malicious smile graced his face.

A familiar taste of metallic tang fills his mouth, and spitting it onto the ground, he sees crimson stain the hard concrete. In that moment, an animalistic growl escaped his mouth as he turned towards his prey.

A sudden wave of fear is felt as the crowd quiets down. They watch with bated breath as Leo slowly rises from the ground. His attacker looks at him with the same cocky look and lightly hits his open palm with his hammer hand.

"You are worthless, how dare you raise your hand to a superior being! I'm going to take great pleasure in smashing your fucking head in." He says with an evil smile on his face that a burning feeling goes from Leo's head towards his arms as he growls like a wild bear.

He's done being the punching bag for Quirk supremist's, done being pushed around, and done with the abuse. He's sick of it all.

Leo clenches his teeth as his eyes start to glow bright red, and the veins on his arms start to bulge as he squeezes his hands into tight fists. He looks up at his attacker and lets out a deep, bellowing roar.

With increased speed, he rushed forward towards his attacker and speared him to the ground. The boy tried to swing his hammer hand, but Leo catches it and savagely snaps his hand at the wrist.

A high-pitched squeal of pain escapes the boy's voice as he looks at his wrongly twisted hand. His scream is quickly stopped as he is met with relentless blow after blow to the face, each getting harder and harder.

A few seconds go by before his face is covered in bruises and blood, but Leo keeps hammering away. Animalistic growls escape him as each shot lands; he roars out in anger as he throws faster and heavier shots.

A few minutes go by as Leo slowly starts to calm down. His eyes lose the red haze they gained as his ragged breathing snaps him out of it.

His fists drip with crimson as he looks at them, confused. Looking down, he can see the beaten face of his attacker. His arms suddenly start to feel extremely hot. Looking down at his arms, two things start to form and engrave themselves into his flesh.

-Flashback end-

Leo looks out the window with a faraway look in his eye's as he slowly comes back down to reality. He turns his attention towards the board and pays attention to the lessons.

The bell chimes through the intercom, signaling the end of the school day. Leo picks up his bag and slowly starts gathering his things. Bakugo and his lackeys walk through the crowd and towards Izuku, but Leo stands up, getting their attention.

"Leave.." He says this, nodding his head towards the door. Bakugo grits his teeth and scoffs before turning on his heel and walking out of the room with his lackeys in tow. Izuku slightly panics and looks at Leo with wide eyes.

"Why did you do that? He's going to target you now too." He says, fearful of seeing someone get hurt, Leo slings his bag over his shoulder and looks at Izuku with a friendly look.

"I don't care. I couldn't just stand there while everyone was against you. You looked like you're quietly crying out for someone to help you." He smiles at the green-haired teen. The young man's eye's well up with tears as he looks at Leo with shock; he quickly wipes them away and smiles.

"Thank you." Izuku says, bowing gratefully to Leo. The young man lets out a small chuckle.

"Your welcome."

Izuku nervously tightens his grip on the straps of his backpack. In one of his hands, a notebook with the title 'Hero Analysis for the Future' is written in bold permanent marker.

"You like heroes?" Leo asks, nodding his head towards the notebook. Izuku looks at him, confused, until he follows his gaze to the notebook in his free hand.

"Y-Yes! I've loved Quirks and heroes since I was a small child." He says quietly, waiting for the name to call. Leo nods his head and looks at him with a curious gaze.

"Say, I'm new to the area and need some help to get my bearings straight. Could you help me learn the area?"

"Sure, follow me." Izuku says with a smile as he walks towards the door, and Leo follows behind him as they start getting to know one another.

Over the course of a couple hours, Izuku had been showing Leo around Mustafu. The green-haired teen was nervous at first but slowly came out of his shell when talking about heroes and quirks. Deciding it was time for both of them to go home, Izuku decided to lead Leo into a tunnel that acts as a short cut towards the train station.

A viscous sound was followed by a sort of sludge coming from the manhole behind them. The sludge slowly began to form a deformed body with piercing yellow eyes that narrowed as it looked around desperately.

"Just my luck! How the hell is it possible that Bastard is here in this city? I need to hide, huh? Ohhhhh~" The living mass of sludge looked towards the two young teens and smiled maliciously.

The sudden noise made the hair on Leo's neck stand up. He slowly turned around and saw the mass of sludge that was smiling at them. He glared at the mass, making it reel back before slowly skulking forward.

"A pair of perfect skin suits! Hey, kids, you don't mind giving me your bodies, do you?" The villain said it in a desperate tone, and Izuku turned around at the sudden chill that ran up his spine. He stares with wide eyes at the fast-approaching sludge.

The young, green-haired teen yelled in fear and was stuck in place as fear gripped him to the core. Leo growled in anger as that familiar sensation filled his head, and his arms started to feel hot until they burned. The veins on his body begin to bulge as he lets out a deep, animalistic growl.

"It will all be over in a second! Just accept your fate and give me your bodies!" He shouts as he goes to reach a tendril towards Leo.

However, the same manhole cover that the villain came from burst open.

*BOOM*

A large and muscular man came from it, his blue eyes glowing as he looked at the two teens getting charged by the sludge villain. Both anger and concern were present in his stare, but he quickly stood straight and prepared to interfere.

"I AM HERE!" He declares in his deep, booming voice that, in an instant, the sludge villain turned and tried to whip All Might with a long tendril, but the number one hero quickly ducked it and rushed forward with blinding speed.

The villain unsuccessfully tried to attack him again with another whip like tendril, but the hero dodged again and planted his feet firmly on the ground and clenched his hand tightly into a fist. Before the villain could even realize where All Might was, his eyes were widening in fear.

"TEXAS SMASH!" All Might shouted as he threw a powerful punch in the direction of the villain, creating wind pressure that followed his fist. As his fist slammed into the villain, it bulldozed its way through the sludge, reducing him to pieces.

Izuku stands in awe at seeing his favorite hero before him, unable to find his voice after seeing All Might in real life. Leo slowly calms down, takes a deep breath, and winces in slight pain from a headache that tics in his head.

"HA HA! I GOT TO YOU IN TIME! HE DIDN'T HURT YOU TWO, DID HE?" He asks with a big smile on his face. Leo opens his eyes and shakes his head.

"No, you stepped in before he could touch either of us. Thank you.." The young man nods his head towards him. All Might looks at him and gives him a nod back, a silent understanding between the two. Izuku let out a shocked noise as he finally recovered from his shock.

"A-Al-All Might! Y-You're here! Oh my God, All Might is in front of me!" He stuttered, flabbergasted, seemingly talking to the hero he's admired since he was a small child. All Might looks at him with a confused look but appreciates the praise.

Suddenly, the green-haired teen stops in his tracks and seems to look around for something.

"My notebook, I need to ask for an autograph!" He mutters to himself quietly, and Leo points to it on the ground a few feet away.

"It's right over there." Izuku looks at it and quickly grabs it. He flips through page after page, looking for an empty one, before holding it out to the number one hero.

"Can you please sign my notebook?" He asks with a hopeful smile on his face, All Might let's out a chuckle before pulling out a marker from his back pocket and signing his name.

"ANYTHING FOR A FAN!"

"Thank you so much!" He says he is bowing repeatedly. Leo grips his head as pain flares up once again. All Might shoots him a concerned look but stays silent as small trails of smoke start to emanate from him.

'Shit, my time is running out! Come on, Leo.. help me out here.' He says, giving Leo a knowing gaze, the young man looks at the number one hero and nods his head.

"Hey, Midoriya, can you show me the way to the train station again? I want to memorize the route so I can make it to school on time." Izuku turns to him and nods his head, but turns back too. All Might, the number one hero, still has a smile plastered on his face.

"ALL RIGHT YOUNG ONES! I NEED TO GET THIS GUY TO THE POLICE SO THEY CAN TAKE CARE OF HIM. STAY OUT OF TROUBLE. SEE YOU AROUND!" The hero says as he pats his pockets to show the sludge villain is in a couple of cola bottles. He nods one last time to Leo as he begins to walk past them, and out of the tunnel, Izuku reaches out a shaky hand with a desperate look on his face.

'Wait, so soon? I didn't get to ask the question.' He was alarmed as he saw the hero begin to do stretches, his wide and broad back growing smaller with each passing second.

In a flash, Leo watches as Izuku suddenly rushes towards the number one hero. He goes to grab the hem of All Might's shirt when he leaps into the air. Izuku grabbed onto his leg by accident and disappeared with the number one hero. Leo looks up and sees the fleeting figure of the number one hero disappear into the distance, with Izuku hanging on for dear life.

"Fuck..." He said quietly to himself as he decided it was best to head home for the day.

Leo can be seen climbing the stairs to the apartment complex that he has come to know as home. Another wave of pain assaults his head. He stops near the door leading to his apartment when the door opposite him opens.

Looking up and squinting, a short woman wearing a pink sweater steps out. She has green hair tied up into a bun, but a worried look is plastered on her face, but it changes as she notices him.

"Oh, I didn't know someone moved into that apartment." She says in a quiet voice that Leo stands up and smiles politely towards the older woman.

"I just moved in. I think it was 3 to 4 days ago. Sorry, I've been busy with registering for Aldera and a few other things. I'm very pleased to meet you." He says, holding out his hand to her, that she gently takes it and shakes it.

"And I'm Inko Midoriya. It's nice to know such a polite young man lives across from us."

"Your son is Izuku, right?" He asks, and she nods with a beaming smile on her face.

"Yes, my little hero. He was supposed to be home an hour ago." She says that as that nervous look returns to her face, Leo sighs and rubs the back of his head.

"That'd be my fault, ma'am. I asked him to show me around so I wouldn't get lost. Sorry, last time I saw him, he was going to write down a quirk in his Hero notebook." He says slightly lying. Inko sighs as her shoulders drop.

"That boy, he really loves quirks." She smiles upon hearing that her son is off writing down more quirks. Leo let out a soft chuckle hearing that and leans against the nearby wall.

"I saw his notebook; how long has he been interested in quirks?" Inko looks up at him and smiles brightly.

"Ever since he was a small boy. When he was around 4, he saw a video of All Might on the internet. Ever since then, he's been writing down any and every quirk he sees." Leo nods his head; the smell of something burning catches their attention. The older woman's eyes widen as she opens the door to her apartment. Black smoke can be seen coming from the kitchen.

"Oh no! I'm so very sorry, but I have to clean my oven. It was a pleasure meeting you, Leo. If you need anything, please knock on my door." She says fast before disappearing through the door. Leo gently pushes off the wall he was leaning on and pulls out a set of keys from his pocket.

He jiggles one of the keys from the key ring into the lock, and with a twist, the lock unlocks. Leo slowly enters his humble abode and closes the door behind him.

His apartment is thoughtfully decorated with things that intrigue him; he has a nice kitchen with appliances. His living room has a flat-screen TV with a few game consoles under it on the entertainment stand.

Leo sets his school bag down near the front door and lets out a sigh to relieve some stress. Walking to the refrigerator, he opens it to see the beverage that he was planning on having: some chocolate milk. Taking the small bottle out of the fridge, he starts to shake it when something on the counter catches his attention—it's an envelope.

He picks it up and sees 'To Leo, from Toshinori'. Turning it over, he slides his finger under the seal and opens it to reveal 74,000 yen along with a letter. Pulling out the paper, his eyes gloss over it, curious.

- Dear Leo,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I know it's been quite a journey for you, transitioning to your new life in the city and settling into your apartment. It warms my heart to see you taking those steps towards independence and self-sufficiency.

I wanted to leave you this message, a small token of support to ensure you have the means to maintain your apartment and cover your living expenses. I know it's not always easy, especially when starting out on your own. Your determination and courage have never ceased to inspire me, and I believe in your ability to conquer any challenges that come your way.

In this envelope, you will find some funds to help you with rent and other necessities. I know you are strong and capable, but even the mightiest of heroes can use a helping hand now and then. Consider this a gesture of goodwill from a friend who cares deeply for your well-being.

If you ever need guidance, advice, or just someone to talk to, don't hesitate to reach out. I'm just a phone call or a message away. Remember, Plus Ultra!

Take care of yourself, Leo, and know that I have the utmost faith in your abilities and the bright future that awaits you.

With unwavering belief and respect,

Toshinori Yagi

All Might

Leo shakes his head with a small smile on his face as he neatly folds the letter and puts it in a nearby drawer. He starts counting the money that Toshinori had left him and snorts in amusement.

"Who would have thought.. the mighty number 1 hero of Japan, was a softie." He says before splitting the stack and neatly folding half of the money. He sets the other half into his wallet and heads off to his room.
