Chapter 7 Mistakes and rewards…

Dipper and the group had found a suitable building within the abandoned town. Luckily, the building they settled on was a former inn with a few rooms with beds. However, the sheets were bad and the straw mattresses weren't good anymore. So, all of it had to be tossed leaving just the wooden bedframes themselves. Bovard and Amanda had spare coats that they have brought along, so they were being used as a cot for Amanda to lay on. The group managed to stop her bleeding a couple of hours ago but Amanda was still badly hurt. Luckily, Pacifica had and herb called Valerian to help her sleep.

"Were back!" Grenda shouted as she and Candy came through the front door of the inn.

"We brought back some rabbits." Candy chimed in.

"Good. Amanda is resting upstairs while Dipper and Elise went for some more firewood for the fireplace. Please place those in the kitchen. I have some vegetables to go with those rabbits." Bovard instructed which slightly irritated Candy that Dipper was with Elise but she let it go because now isn't the time to get jealous.

Meanwhile, in the forest Dipper and Pacifica gathered as much firewood as they could. They did bring some with them since they left the forest before the werewolf attack but this would help keep them stable for a while. However, since they were alone now, Dipper took this time to talk with Pacifica…

"Hey…Princess Pacifica?" Dipper called out.

"It's Elise right now. Don't call me by my name or title otherwise the others might hear. The only ones that know who I really am, are you and Amanda." Pacifica said.

"Right. Sorry. But I need to know something…" Dipper asked.

"Ugh! Fine! What?" Pacifica asked starting to get annoyed.

"Amanda told me why you wanted to come with us…but aren't you worried about returning? By now, the king and queen would know about your absence." Dipper said.

"I'd be lying if I wasn't a little nervous but that hardly matters right now. My friend is hurt badly and we have to help her starting tomorrow." Pacifica said as she started walking back towards where the abandoned town was and Dipper quickly followed.

"To be honest…I also didn't want you to die neither." Pacifica said with a small blush but made sure Dipper didn't see.

"What do you mean? I'm still alive and I wouldn't have-" Dipper said until Pacifica stopped, dropped her bundle of firewood, and faced Dipper.

"YES, YOU WOULD HAVE!" Pacifica shouted as she started to cry.

"Woah. Calm down Pacif…I-I mean Elise." Dipper said as he was highly confused on how to respond right now.

"Why did you think my father sent you on this dangerous quest? Especially, right after you got hurt from your training match with that Robbie jerk! If I didn't tell Amanda to give you that healing potion right before my father's messenger arrived, you would have struggled to even make it out of the forest!" Pacifica said with tears rolling down her face.

"Y-Yeah well. I did have the others too and-" Dipper said as he started argue until Pacifica cut him off.

"Or what about the werewolves!? If I wasn't there with the silver potions, they would have killed all of you! My father knew that and used it as an opportunity! Don't you understand Dipper?! He's trying to kill you!" Pacifica shouted.

Dipper knew that the king was trying to fail him in order to kill him and he knew that sending him on such a dangerous mission was another chance to get rid of him also but he realized that Pacifica was right. For some reason that he didn't know why, this was beyond personal. It wasn't just to fail him or keep him from being a squire anymore. Something was wrong but he couldn't figure it out…

"I know…" Dipper started to say and Pacifica looked at him.

"I knew from the start that the king wanted me dead. However, I don't know why. At first, I thought it was just because of my outburst from the first time I met him. Then, I felt like it was because he didn't want me to climb the ranks and become a knight's squire. But now…It feels like there is something more behind the scenes that I'm not aware about…" Dipper said.

"Dipper…" Pacifica said as she wiped away her tears.

"Don't worry Pacifica. When we get back, I will find out the real reason why but until then we all got to make it back alive." Dipper said and Pacifica nodded in agreement.

Meanwhile…on the opposite side of the town…

.

.

.

The two revenants found their way to the abandoned town. They found the werewolf bodies that were disposed of earlier. Both the revenants possessed the bodies and reanimated the long dead werewolves. However, they turned into larger darker versions of themselves when they were alive. The werewolves' eyes glowed a bright sapphire color, their fangs and claws turned black, and cold dark smoke poured out of their bodies like a slow mist.

One werewolf dashed towards the woods, while the other went towards the opposite direction. They were instructed by Decar, whom was miles away, to attack during the night. That's when their power would be at their fullest and their prey's visibility would be at their lowest. Also, they were instructed to attack from opposing sides of the town to confuse and divide their forces. Decar wasn't going to take any chances and he couldn't fail. If he did…he would have literal hell to pay…

Meanwhile in the kingdom of Gravity Falls…

.

.

Since this morning, the king and queen were informed about the absence of their daughter, Princess Pacifica. However, only they royal guards and her parents knew about her being gone. The king ordered that no one speak about Pacifica's disappearance so the masses wouldn't know…

"Dear, where do you think she could have gone?" Queen Priscilla asked while applying her makeup in their room.

"According to the royal guards, she escaped through her balcony with tied up linen. This was discovered this morning so it had to be last night or yesterday evening at the very earliest." King Preston said while straightening up his royal robes to look the way he wanted.

"Do you think she's in danger?" Priscilla asked but with not much concern.

"If not, she will be once she returns. Just because she's the princess, doesn't mean she isn't replaceable." Preston said coldly.

"What do you mean love?" Priscilla asked.

"It's obvious my dear. We will have another child to inherit the throne. Another heir won't be a challenge." Preston explained.

"B-But…I can't have any more children my love…I've gotten too old." Priscilla said.

"Don't worry. I've found an answer to that." Preston said.

"…You're not taking a concubine, are you?" Priscilla asked with distaste.

"Heavens no. I found that the light elves have an…interesting property to their bodies." Preston said but confused Priscilla even more.

"You see. The light elves' blood can rejuvenate a human's age. The ratio differs from person to person but I heard from Bovard, that a single drop can rewind a human's age by five years at minimum." Preston explained.

"A-Are you serious?!" Priscilla asked in disbelief.

"Yes…but we have to be careful with this process. Mainly, because too much can turn you into one of those filthy elves." Preston said with distaste for the other races.

"So…I'm still a little confused on Pacifica's position in all of this. If we are going to disinherit her from the throne, what are we going to do with her if she returns from heavens knows where?" Priscilla asked.

"Just leave that matter to me…" Preston said with an evil smile…

Meanwhile in Piedmont…

.

.

The village was still in the middle of repairs but now some of the gnomes were helping. Some used their magic of nature to spawn new trees quickly to replace the lumber needed for the repairs. Others dug up some hard stone from deep within the earth, to reinforce some of the weaker buildings that were damaged.

Everything was going smoothly…Until Mabel decided to walk by where her family's home used to be…

"WHAT THE HELL IS THIS!?" Mabel shouted as she noticed the gnomes made a new house for her.

The house was a humongous tree that spawned with the help of all the gnomes' magic. The base was carved out for the front door and the trunk was hallowed out for Mabel and her family to live in with new furnishings. The bark of the tree even had windows and a chimney made from stone coming out the side. This left Mabel dumbstruck as she just stood there looking at the construct…

"Like what you see, huh? We've dubbed it, the Mabel tree." Jeff said after he suddenly appeared in front of Mabel from a puff of pink smoke.

"I told you guys to leave me alone!" Mabel shouted.

"We did my lady. However, we felt like a normal house like the rest of the village would be too ordinary for one as great as you. So, the gang and I made this masterpiece. I dare say, this is our best work yet." Jeff said with confidence as he was proud of what he and the rest of the gnome mercenaries made for Mabel.

"T-This…W-Why…I can't…" Mabel said as she struggled to form words to express her disapproval.

"Breathtaking, I know. Now you go on in and enjoy your new home and it will be here when you come back from the magic academy. The boys and I will take great care of the place when you are gone." Jeff said as he took his leave in a puff of pink smoke.

Mabel just wanted to scream. Never before did she feel so smothered by affection and admiration by people she literally just met a few hours ago. However, Mabel decided to just let it go for now as she went into her new home. It was only for tonight and once she goes to live in the magic academy, she won't have to deal with these gnomes for a while…

.

.

.

Later that evening…

.

.

.

Night was fast approaching but Dipper and the others were already in the building getting ready to rest up for tomorrow's emergency quest to save Amanda. Bovard already retired in one of the rooms on the first floor. It had a desk inside with a sturdy enough chair to sit in. Grenda and Candy were by the fire they started at the fire place. Dipper wanted to be with Pacifica but she was staying with Amanda tonight in her own room. So, Dipper took it as a hint to give them some space and stay with Candy and Grenda tonight in the lounge…

"Do you think Amanda will be ok?" Grenda asked breaking the silence that when on between the three of them for what seemed like an hour.

"Y-Yeah. She's a tough one. I'm sure once we get the medicine ready, she'll be good as new in no time." Candy said.

"We have to be very careful though." Dipper said and both Candy and Grenda looked his way.

"I have a suspicion that this emergency quest isn't going to be easy." Dipper continued.

"What makes you think that?" Candy asked.

"Look at what we had to face so far. The undead and then werewolves. Now that we have to go our separate ways for these ingredients, we could face something else in our travels." Dipper pointed out.

"You're right. Together we managed to survive with no problems but once one of us leaves the group, it's different." Grenda said.

"Yes. Just like with Robbie and Tambry at the graveyard. Or Elise, when she was being attacked by the zombie…Even Amanda with that werewolf." Candy said.

"Once we get these ingredients and get Amanda better, we have to stick together no matter what." Dipper said and both Candy and Grenda nodded.

Upstairs, Pacifica was with Amanda. Amanda was still asleep and she was given additional herbs to ease some of her pain but now Pacifica only had a few potion ingredients left. However, she still needed the cure before the next full moon. It was frustrating that Pacifica's first and only friend was in this situation. She remembered the first time she met Amanda almost ten years ago…

Flashback…

.

.

.

"Pacifica!" Queen Priscilla called from down stairs in the castle and little Pacifica showed herself from the second floor.

"Y-Yes Mother." A much younger Pacifica answered.

"This is your new instructor, Amanda. As you can see, she's an elf. But despite her race, she's the best this capital has to offer in terms navigation and map making. You are to study one hour a day with her in learning her craft." Priscilla stated.

"O-Okay." Pacifica answered.

"Very well. I'll leave you two to it." Priscilla said as she walked away.

"Hello." Amanda greeted.

"Hi." Pacifica greeted back.

"May I go with you to your room to begin showing you what I know?" Amanda asked.

"This way." Pacifica ordered which caught Amanda off guard a little on her attitude but knew she was royalty so it was to be expected. Especially with parents like the queen and king.

Inside Pacifica's room, Amanda started to show her the basic form of map making first. She had to go slow with Pacifica since she was a child but she learned quickly enough. Once Pacifica was finished creating the outline, title, direction, and the legend symbols all on her own, they were done with lesson.

"And we're done for today. According to the hourglass, we still have a little time for today. Do you want to talk and get to know each other?" Amanda asked.

"Father told me not to talk to any one unless it was with my teachers for lessons or social gatherings to better acquaint myself with nobles." Pacifica said.

"Well…We could keep it a secret. Just between us two girls." Amanda said with a smile which brightened up Pacifica's face as she gave a small smile too.

"So, what do you like to do for fun?" Amanda asked.

"I'm not allowed to have fun. Mother and Father said that I need to study to be a better leader in the future." Pacifica said as she went back to being depressed.

"Well…I'm sure there's something you like to do." Amanda said a little distraught by the harsh reality that Pacifica's parents put her through.

"…I do like mixing potions. I'm not allowed to have toys since they are distracting. So, my alchemy teacher brings plants and powders that we put together to make something else. It's so fun! OH! But please don't tell my parents. If they found out, they would get rid of him and he's a nice man even if he was sick." Pacifica said.

"Sick? He's an alchemist. Was he contagious? Are you sick as well?" Amanda asked as she started to get worried.

"No no! Nothing like that. He told me, it's magic within his body. I don't understand it much myself but he was also a court wizard. He had two books that had all these interesting spells and alchemy recipes inside. I tried to read one of them but he stopped me before I could read a single word." Pacifica said.

"I see…" Amanda said as she was relieved a little that Pacifica wasn't sick.

However, Amanda's time was up and she had to go for the day. But when she got her payment for tutoring Pacifica, she was told never to speak anything that she may have seen or heard within the castle's walls. This confirmed that Pacifica's homelife wasn't a normal childhood a kid her age should have. The poor girl was forced all day every day to become the educated, proper, and obedient heir. Regardless if she was only seven, Pacifica's light was barely even there.

So, for the next ten years, Amanda became Pacifica's friend. Elves aged drastically slower than humans, so Amanda saw Pacifica grow into the person she was now. In all this time, she helped the princess have a better life than what her parents gave her…

.

.

.

Back to present…

.

.

.

Pacifica was startled by a knock on the door and she quickly put on her robe and covered her head…

"C-Come in." Pacifica said as she tried to use her Elise voice.

"Sorry for the intrusion." Bovard said as he walked in the room and closed the door behind him.

"How's Amanda doing?" Bovard asked.

"She's asleep right now but better than before." Pacifica said.

"That's good…And how are you doing?...Princess." Bovard asked and Pacifica jumped up from her chair in surprise.

"This confirmed my suspicions. You're Princess Pacifica Northwest." Bovard said and Pacifica took off her hood knowing there's no point in trying to hide her identity any longer.

"F-Forgive me Sir Bovard. I didn't mean to-" Pacifica said until Bovard held up a hand.

"Royalty or not, you shouldn't be here. You are not suited to be in this type of danger!" Bovard stressed.

"I have to be here!" Pacifica nearly shouted.

"Why?! Your father will be furious! Depending on his mood, he could have everyone here killed for your foolishness!" Bovard said as he grabbed Pacifica by the shoulders to express the severity of the situation.

"I will take the full blame for my actions! No one will die…" Pacifica said as her tone became softer once she saw Amanda still on the bed unconscious and Bovard let out a sigh of defeat.

"Fine. But you are to stay by me the whole time! Grenda is just going to have to find the mushroom root alone and-" Bovard said until Pacifica shrugged off Bovard's grip in defiance.

"No! I will fulfill my duty and help Amanda!" Pacifica said with a stern serious look on her face.

"You are the princess! I cannot allow this!" Bovard stressed.

"And as the princess, I will use my authority while I still have it! I apricate your concern Bovard but Amanda is my friend. Like it or not, I am going to help her!" Pacifica said as she stared at Bovard intensely

"…Very well. On two conditions! If you cannot agree, then I will take you back to the capital here and now. Amanda's life be damned." Bovard stressed.

"Fine. What are the conditions?" Pacifica asked.

"One. You are to maintain your cover as Elise from this point forward. The others haven't caught on since they never heard your voice until now but they have seen your face. So, no showing who you are." Bovard stated.

"Fine." Pacifica agreed.

"Two…You stay away from Dipper from now on." Bovard said which startled Pacifica.

"M-May I ask why?" Pacifica asked not liking where this was going.

"I have seen how you've been around him. But your actions could lead to both of your ruin. He's a son of a low-ranked noble whose family lives out in the sticks. Yes, his great uncle was the court wizard that taught you your alchemy knowledge but that isn't enough to associate yourself with him." Bovard said.

"…Understood." Pacifica defeatedly said.

"Good. Now get some rest, tomorrow we have important work to do and-" Bovard said until they heard a loud crash.

"BOVARD!" Dipper shouted from the first floor and the two left Amanda's room to find out what was going on…

Bovard and Pacifica saw the werewolf that broke in through a wall but saw that its body was completely different when it was before. Bovard wasn't going to risk Pacifica's life. So, with one swift motion, Bovard pushed Pacifica into Amanda's room. Despite her protest, he locked the door with a magical key he had on his person. Then, Bovard turned his attention to the situation at hand.

"Why won't our attacks work?!" Grenda shouted after she tried to bash the werewolf with her mace.

However, every attack the three tried had no affect as the mace and the swords bounced off the werewolf's fur like a hard stone. Bovard reached the three down stairs and used a magic air spell to force the beast outside.

"What's going on!?" Candy panicked.

"The werewolf has been reanimated and possessed by a powerful spirit. This has Decar's name written all over it." Bovard stated.

"We're out of silver though. How can we beat it?" Grenda asked.

"We won't need silver, it's no longer a werewolf now but we need to-" Bovard said until the other undead werewolf came out of nowhere and lunged at him from behind…

Bovard's shoulder was bit but Grenda tackled the beast and pushed it outside with the other one. Candy followed to back her up and Dipper was about to follow too until he was stopped by Bovard who was on the ground. Dipper saw his wound was badly pouring out blood but he used a light fire spell to cauterize the gash.

"Dipper! You and the girls need to destroy they eyes!" Bovard shouted while holding his shoulder in pain.

"The eyes?" Dipper inquired.

"I saw their faces. These werewolves are being possessed by revenants. They only have one weakness and that's their eyes! Destroy them and they will die for good. The spirits will be released!" Bovard struggled to say as the pain he was feeling was barely too much to handle.

"Okay. I have an idea but will you help us?" Dipper asked.

"I'm in no condition to fight. Sorry, but at best, I only have one spell left in me before my mana runs out." Bovard said.

"That's fine. This is what I need you to do for us…" Dipper said as he explained his plan…

.

.

.

Outside, Grenda and Candy were barely dodging the attacks these undead werewolves were giving. Both were near their limit of stamina but suddenly Dipper showed up to help them…

"Listen! Their eyes are their weakness! Destroy them and they will die!" Dipper announced.

"Easier said than done Dipper!" Grenda shouted as she parried another attack.

"Do you have a plan?" Candy asked while backstepping to avoid a swipe from the other werewolf.

"Yes! We lead them to the inn where the first one made that large hole. Everything will fall into place there. Follow me!" Dipper shouted and ran back towards the inn and the others followed with the undead werewolves in fast pursuit.

However, one werewolf got close enough and clawed Candy's leg. Dipper wasted no time and quickly scooped her up and carried her with strength he didn't know he had before the next attack. With the last burst of strength and stamina they had left both Dipper and Grenda finally reached the inn's hole.

"BOVARD NOW!" Dipper shouted.

Bovard casted an earth and water combo spell to soften the ground under Dipper, Candy, and Grenda right before the werewolves caught up. They both fell into the muddy ground and their legs fell deep into the mud. Bovard quickly harden the spell and the mud went back into dry dirt trapping both undead werewolves. But this little trap wasn't permanent as both began to pull out their legs one by one.

"ATTACK NOW!" Bovard shouted.

Dipper and Grenda wasn't going to let this opportunity go to waste as they both took one undead werewolf revenant each and attacked the eyes. Grenda managed to destroy both of her werewolf's eyes but Dipper only managed to destroy one with his attack. Before he could destroy the other one, the werewolf broke free and jumped onto Dipper.

Everyone feared Dipper was going to get killed. However, before the werewolf was about to bite Dipper's neck, an arrow from the second story window of the inn hit the other eye of the werewolf. When both werewolves fell to the ground, Dipper and the others saw who fired the shot.

"HOW DARE YOU LOCK ME UP! I'M A PRINCESS DAMN IT!" Pacifica shouted and immediately went quiet when she just exposed her identity.

Both Grenda and Candy were dumbstruck by this reveal but Dipper and Bovard who heard were frustrated beyond words by Pacifica's outburst. However, despite the sudden reveal, they were finally out of danger and all of them were exhausted.

.

.

.

Meanwhile…

.

.

.

"DAMN IT!" Decar shouted while slamming his fists in the ground.

"WHY WON'T THEY JUST DIE!" Decar continued until blue flames appeared and Bill emerged calmly walking to Decar who tried to run but Bill snapped his fingers and severed Decar's legs which made him fall.

"Well well well… You failed once again Decar." Bill said as he reached Decar crawling in pure fear.

"Pp-Please! D-Don't do this!" Decar begged but was ignored as a portal of hell opened up under him and demon hands were pulling him in despite his cries for mercy.

"You know Decar… I realized why you turned yourself into an undead. You feared going to hell for your betrayal to the humans. Sad to say though, being undead doesn't make you immortal. You tried to benefit yourself by out living those around you as you continued to increase your undead army. However, times like this make me feel like you were nothing but a fraud trying to be better than everyone else…Almost like a pyramid scheme. HAHAHA!" Bill laughed as he made a blue flamed pyramid appear out of no where above them and crushed Decar into the portal of hell.

Bill then reappeared above the blue fiery pyramid laughing uncontrollably. After his fit of laughter, he turned his attention to the direction where Dipper and the others were miles away…

"You won this round Pinetree…But next time, you will regret being born!" Bill said and then teleported away in blue flame.

.

.

.

The next morning…

.

.

.

Dipper, Pacifica, Bovard, Candy, and Grenda were finally able to get some rest after the events of last night. However, with Pacifica's accidental reveal, the plan was changed…

"I can't believe that Elise was Princess Pacifica the whole time." Candy said as she traveled with Dipper to find one of the two ingredients they needed for Amanda's cure.

"Yeah. Now Bovard had to use a powerful magical ward around the inn to protect Amanda while he accompanied Pacifica with Grenda to find the Marshmallow root. He was pretty upset that she revealed her identity but refused to leave her side until we get back to the capital." Dipper said.

"…Do you…" Candy began to say before stopping herself.

"What?" Dipper asked.

"N-Nothing. Let's hurry and find the Wolfsbane. At very earliest, it will take us until tomorrow evening to reach the mountain." Candy said.

"Yes. Let's go." Dipper said as he quickened his pace with Candy in their trek towards the mountain…

Meanwhile, Bovard, Pacifica, and Grenda were in the opposite direction along the riverbend looking for the Marshmallow root…

"I should have taken you back to capital last night after the little stunt you pulled." Bovard lectured.

"If you didn't lock me up like my parents did, I wouldn't have lost my temper like that." Pacifica argued back.

"You are the princess! What else was I going to do to protect you?!" Bovard said.

"If I didn't think I could handle myself, I wouldn't have come here in the first place!" Pacifica yelled.

The two argued for what seemed like an hour, while Grenda stayed a good twenty feet away not wanting to be apart of the screaming match between the two…

"Ugh! I wish I could have stayed with Candy and Dipper instead. But then again, those two need some alone time to hash out their feelings. I know Candy likes Dipper…But I'm not so sure the feeling is mutual for him as well. At least she will get some closure out of this and know where he stands…BUT MAN THESE TWO ARE ANNOYING!" Grenda thought as she continued to endure the court wizard and royal princess yelling at each other…

.

.

.

Meanwhile with Mabel…

.

.

.

Mabel was excited to head to the Magic Academy. However, she had to deal with the gnomes throwing a farewell party for her before she left. It was a little too much to bear first thing in the morning. However, the rest of the villagers gave their goodbyes as well and she wasn't going to lie…she will miss them.

"We'll reach the Magic Academy within the hour milady." One of the riders told Mabel while she was inside the carriage.

Mabel was nervous about all of this. This would be the first time away from her family and home for the next year. She knew her great uncle was widely known in the academy but she didn't want that to define her or what she could do. So, as she gripped her magical book tightly, she was determined to make her own name in this new life she was about to begin…
