The story starts the day after Beth and Josh break up.

Eddie was waiting for them behind the school. Jake noticed she was missing from the baseball game at recess. Josh was just sitting on the steps, watching Beth from afar. Other than their initial conversation while walking to school, she had ignored him for the entire day. She was off giggling with some of the girls in her grade, playing tag.
"Josh." Jake said suddenly, coming up behind his brother. Josh jumped and fell on the ground.
"What the heck man!?" Josh said. Jake looked worried.
"Where's Eddie? She's nowhere to be found." Jake asked.
"Why would I know?" Josh asked in disbelief.
Jake shrugged.
"I don't know, but can you help me find her? I don't think it'll be fun if I find her alone."
Josh sighed. "Fine."
The twins set off in search of Eddie. Finally they turn to check behind the school. They were instantly met with a dark glare from none other than Edith Ann Malloy herself.
"Well, look what we have here." Eddie declared.
"We just came to look for you." Jake said defensively. But Eddie wasn't looking at him. Her eyes were trained on Josh. Josh swallowed, nervously waiting for her next words.
"And you got some nerve. Maybe some people don't want to be found. Namely not being found by you." Eddie rolled her eyes. She was propped up against the school, her arms crossed over her chest.
"Wait, this is about last night, isn't it? Cause we got in a whole lot of trouble already, Eddie." Jake replied hastily.
"Look, I know Caroline and Beth are at fault too, but still," Eddie started.
"What do you mean?" Josh asked, sharing his first words in the conversation.
"You don't even know," Eddie laughed cruelly, "how much she even liked you. Why would you? Hm? And you!" She turned to Jake. "You couldn't stand to see your brother happy."
Jake and Josh looked at each other. They seemed to be saying What is she even talking about?
"She's liked you, Josh, since September." Eddie continued. "And Jake, you didn't care. You created that note, and yes, Beth misinterpreted it, and yes, Caroline started the whole chain reaction, but it was you, Joseph Hatford, who couldn't accept that fact."
"We're in a war," Jake said. "There shouldn't be any dating whatsoever." Eddie scoffed.
"That is why you're your own enemy, Jake, in this war." She said.
"Josh, you were the first decent guy who's liked Beth, so I didn't say anything." Eddie looked at the ground. "But I am her sister, and I can't stand seeing her hurt. So leave her alone. If either one of you or your brothers hurt her again, I will be there."
Josh looked at Eddie solemnly. Jake rolled his eyes and turned away. Finally, after a bit, Eddie pushed past them and walked to her sister.
