Notes:
Hey Everyone! Zancrowe Here!
If you stumbled upon this… One, why? Two, hi! You've found my pilot for a… maybe upcoming side-story related to Nouvelle, Classique, Something Borrowed, Something BLUE, and A Sixpence In Your Shoe; which focuses on a teenage Ruth Dillinger, the baby girl introduced in Classique that was Dove's biggest secret (spoilers, I guess), and her life in Totsuki Academy.
But, unlike all those aforementioned stories, this will not be about cooking and instead go in a completely different direction. Again, this is just a test, so don't think too much into it. Also made to help out my friend and fellow writer Demonata / CoolCarnage (find him in AO3!). The 3rd Part of the Nouvelle Trilogy: Something BLUE will be my main focus moving forwards. Consider this just an extra (unless you love it, in which let me know and I'll do both at the same time... somehow). Still, in the wise words of Gravity Falls' creator Alex Hirsch's:
"A fandom's work is never done. So here's some tales just for fun."
"You wanted more? You got your wish! Don't stress – it's only canon-ish."
The Hiei Showcase.
The Intercontinental Shokugeki.
The BLUE.
Three massive events that outright shaped the very way the culinary industry operated, and even now, nine years later, the effects still lingered. Every single action taken in each had brought with it many, many consequences, some good, some bad, all of them chaotic, and honestly, Ruth Dillinger was sick and tired of being asked about it. She has heard it all by now. About how amazing or vile her father was, or how insanely hot and talent or evil and deranged (yet still hot) her mom was. Or about her Auntie, or her Uncle, or every single member of her expanded, confusing family that had been involved in that mess. She had grown up hearing it, saw the footage on YouTube, and heard every single wannabe "scooper" make a four-hour podcast about it, and it. Just. Made. Her. Blood. Boil.
Was she a nepo baby? Yeah, and fuck you for not being one too. It's awesome. She could do whatever she wanted. And here, at Totsuki, she was, effectively, the untouched Queen. Already a Seated Member, one of the esteemed Elite Ten, in just her First Year, because of course, but more than that… she was feared, and she liked that.
Ruthless, they called her, and she adored it.
So… it became problematic when a film crew, of all things, got the go-ahead to waltz right in and begin preparing to shoot what she understood would be a streaming fictionalized drama show inspired by the events of those aforementioned culinary tournaments, or at least, the initial two. And at first, she didn't care. Why would she? She had been a toddler back then, so she doubted she'd be represented in any way, but, then her grandmother Mana asked if she could serve as a "Food Consultant" for the series, since they would feature cooking scenes for authenticity and almost all the young actors had no clue how to cook.
So, for the promise that she could pick her spots to do the Stagiaire in if she cooperated, she agreed, and this is why she found herself walking towards the fake restaurant that had once been called Golden Locks and was now being used by the production crew, and while every student that came across her did an immediate one-eighty and avoided her like the plague (they should, she was close to breaking her Auntie Erina's record of most students expelled in a single year), she had two little annoyances that she did not know how to deal with…
Especially when they began to tussle and one pushed the other right onto Ruth herself.
"Damn it, Kouko!" Ruth yelled out, turning to face the two younger kids. Ruth herself, at fifteen, yeah, wasn't a grown-up per say, but she prided herself in being far, far more mature than any teenager her age range. But these two… "If I am going to be forced to babysit you, you have to stay still."
"Ah, come on, that's no fun!" little Kouko Shinomiya whined, with her big brown eyes wide as can be, and her red hair tied into little buns, "I'm no baby! I'm almost twelve! And I'm a student here too! And you keep scaring everyone away, so I'm finally glad I can have a friend! Even if we did pick him off the street!"
"D-Don't say it like that!" Ruth reprimanded, flinching. She wasn't… lying, but damn it, nobody was supposed to know that, "That's a secret. Auntie Erina asked me to keep an eye on him as we give him shelter here at Totsuki, and as much as a pain as that is, I will do so, so keep your trap shut…" she warned, and Kouko just pouted but offered a salute in response. Ruth wanted to strangle her. But, as she turned to the boy, she knew it wasn't much of a difference, "…And… Kibbles?"
"Hmm? Yeah?" the young boy barely ten-years-old, turned to her. Wild, unkept brown hair and equally sharp eyes, he kinda reminded her of her Uncle Ryou, just… baby. She was well aware that her Auntie Erina had tried to fix him up when she bathed him, thanks to that incident, but the kid would not cooperate. He did, however, turn to her, and she saw the two pair of eyes staring at her, from Kibbles, and from Bits, the little white puppy the boy always carried around and called his "brother". This had honestly gotten too weird, too fast for her, "…Remember you are pretending to be a student here. Please, remember what Auntie Erina told you, for your own good, you have to lay low."
"Yeah, I got that," he voiced, and she hated how cute he sounded. She wondered if her own little brother would sound like that as he got a bit older. "I'm doing those boring classes, and pretending to participate and stuff, but… eh… wait, who's Erina again?"
"S-She's the woman who found you!" Ruth almost shouted. "You have been staying with her!"
"Oh! The blonde lady! Right!" Kibbles recalled, and both he and Bits seemed to somehow nod in unison, "She makes very delicious food, but she's super, super annoying and bossy."
"Hey! That's Miss Erina you're talking about, be grateful!" Kouko quickly shouted out, and Ruth could feel a migraine coming. Why did her aunt punish her like this? "You're lucky you got picked up by one of the bestest, cutest, richest, talented…est people around!"
At this little Kibbles just looked at Kouko, and both he and Bits did the exact thing of tilting their heads a bit at the same time, which for once, Ruth had to look away not to grin at.
"She ain't that cute," Kibbles just noted, and while this made Kouko just pout more, Ruth just sighed, grabbed both brats by their respective collars, despite their collective complaints, and… what she assumed was Bits barking (since she wouldn't put it past either to outright bark at her too) she forced them into the locale formally known as Golden Locks.
Inside, she finally got to see several people she had been hearing about for the last couple of weeks, all the gossip about this "Totsuki Show" was the talk of the Academy, and it irked her. Just when she could finally make a name for herself, nah, here comes the greatest hits of her parents and uncles and all her extended, baffling family.
She at least knew two in this sea of beautiful strangers, even if she liked neither.
One was her childhood enemy, once a culinary brat, nepo baby just like her, just without the self-reflection to make it a charming trait like she did, Blake Roberts. The boy, just a few months older than her, with long blonde spiky bangs, blueish eyes and a permanent scowl on his face was, what most stupid girls would call, a culinary idol. He was an actor by trade, but a chef by profession, whatever that meant. He cooked on television, a rising star basically, because of his last name granted. She had hated him when she was four, and she still hated him now.
The other, equally infuriating person there, was one Risa Morisaki. A girl with green-ish hair, kept short in a style not dissimilar to the photos she had seen her Auntie Hisako sport back in the day, and some eloquent glasses on her face to cover her deep blue eyes (actually, between Blake, Risa and herself, why were there so many with blue eyes here?). While Ruth only met her months ago, and she knew deep down she shouldn't hate this girl, it still irked her a lot, because unlike Blake, Risa was a Totsuki student, just like her, and, just like her…
"Oh? The second "Food Consultant is here…" Blake noted when he saw Ruth, Kouko, Kibbles and Bits enter, and while Ruth just rolled her eyes at his comment, and Kouko stuck out her tongue at him, Kibbles just looked around, with both him and Bits the puppy taking in the unfamiliar sights. "Why do we need little Miss Ruthless here anyways, we already have a Seated Member to assists us. Ain't that right Risa?"
"…It was what the Headmistress suggested," Risa merely noted, in the same soft-spoken tone she used for everything, "I am certain Ruth can offer valuable input as well."
And Ruth forced the fakest smile she could muster. Because, despite everything, despite all her victories, despite all her acclaim, right here, right now…
"Oh, good!" the Director in charge of the production and series, Minori Kamaki, noted with a happy clap when she saw Ruth, using her index finger to adjust her glasses properly to get a good look at the girl that was the talk of the academy and the relative of pretty much half of her entire cast of characters, "With this we have everyone we need to at least begin rehearsal. Let me introduce you both to everyone. Everyone, these two ladies will be our Food Consultants while filming, they will assist you in your cooking scenes to make it as authentic as possible! Here we have…"
And Ruth sighed…
"Ruth Dillinger, a First Year Totsuki Academy student, and the current Tenth Seat!"
…and Ruth turned to Risa, with a barely hidden glare…
"And Risa Morisaki, also a First Year Totsuki Academy student, and the current Ninth Seat!"
…why was this girl still ranked higher than her?!
Still, while Ruth pretended this didn't bother her at all, she forced herself to stand next to Risa and Blake, as their would-be Director and Boss continued…
"…And this is Blake Roberts, who I am aware a few of you have worked with before," she explained, and the blonde boy gave off a practiced smirk that Ruth was sure made any girl with a lobotomized brain melt, "He has quite the resume under his belt, and he'll be offering both his acting and cooking talents for us. So please, make all three of them feel welcomed."
Blake's picturesque smile didn't falter in the slightest.
Risa was so stone-faced she looked like a statue.
Ruth couldn't keep her left eye from twitching.
"And now, let me introduce you three to our… erm, initial cast, since we still have a lot of roles to fill out, but we have most of our main stars!" Minori did her best, and carried on, probably used to these primadonnas acting like these brats did by now, even if this was her first directorial debut after having worked as an Assistant Director for quite a while, "First we have the famous acting twins, Lila and Sudachi!"
Ruth gave the two a half glance at best. She had no idea who they were, but she was sure her classmates did. A boy with brown hair and green eyes, and a girl with the same features. Both recently turned sixteen. He was smiling, so was she, but his looked a bit more genuine than hers, at least from what Ruth could decipher.
"It'll be an honor to work with you all," Sudachi said, and he sounded… sincere enough.
"Quite…" Lila added, and she so did not. Ruth barely kept herself from glaring at the actress, since she had turned her attention fully onto Ruth. And she knew, even if she couldn't tell these idiots apart, that this girl must be the one cast as…
"And, of course, our main star…" the Director continued, and before she could even say it, a surprisingly beautiful girl walked right past her and approached the unfriendly trio, "H-Hey, Kurai!"
"Sorry, I am just so excited to meet you all!" Hinaki Kurai voiced with utter glee as she stepped right in front of Ruth, Risa and Blake, and much to the former's surprise, took Ruth's hand gently, "Especially you. Ruth Dillinger. I have studied up so much about you and your family."
"Y-You don't say?" Ruth forced herself to reply. Of course she did. Everyone did. But, unlike the rest, she knew of this girl. Famous actress, former child star, a true talent. She had just finished that indie movie "The Shore" that had won some awards or something about a year and a half ago, and had been the talk of the whole industry for years. Now, despite having recently turned sixteen too, she still had that innocent charm that Ruth found oh-so fake and annoying. Also, sorry, but The Shore had been a boring, overhyped mess of a movie. Someone had to say it. Still, Ruth forced herself to at least be cordial and say, "…I'm happy to have such a wonderful talent here to portray my Auntie-erm-Aunt Erina in this."
"Of course!" Kurai noted with that same amount of excitement. "I may have been only four, but I somehow vividly remember seeing the Intercontinental Shokugeki finals live. It was so, so epic! And so romantic! Ah! I adored it!"
"Yeah, yeah… please let go of my hands though…" Ruth tried, and if it offended Kurai or not, she couldn't tell, as Kurai merely smiled and let her go. She instead turned to greet Risa, who offered a greeting that seemed AI generated, before she turned to Blake and spoke to him for a bit. Seems they knew each other given how their little chat sounded almost natural. Great, just what Ruth needed. Before Ruth could complain, even if she didn't know about what, or to who, she felt the edge of her skirt get tugged.
"Say, why can't I be in the series too? I can cook!" Kouko noted, and Ruth just rolled her eyes.
"You're not an actress," she replied, coldly, "In fact, neither am I. I won't appear in the show. I'm merely here to help because Totsuki seems incapable of giving adult tasks to their adult staff. The Elite Ten system is moronic… Uncles should have dropped that plate…"
"Don't say that!" Kouko reprimanded, her little arms to her hips, "It was a romantic gesture! For your aunt!"
"My Creepy Auntie definitely thinks so, won't shut up about it…" Ruth noted, before they all heard a loud crash, making everyone jump and they all turned, noticing one of the sound systems suddenly on the floor, broken, with Kibbles and Bits, of course, near it.
"...It fell on its own!" Kibbles announced, pointing at the destroyed equipment, and absolutely nobody bought it.
"Damn it! Get over here!" Ruth called out, before she ordered Kouko to grab him and bring him closer.
"Are you babysitting while working?" Lila asked, and Ruth could feel the sarcasm dripping from her voice alone. Her brother walked alongside her; a polite smile ever present. "…I expected more professionalism from the only actual family member of the people we are meant to portray, wouldn't you agree?"
"Please, I'm only here because for as masterful actors as you all claim to be you can't cook to save your lives," Ruth shot back, as she grabbed both Kouko and Kibbles by their jackets, her sharp eyes never leaving Lila's, "I thought actors were supposed to embody their characters fully, and yet, you need me and… those two to help out. So, save the banter. I prefer method actors who really get to know their craft."
"Is that any way to speak to your… 'mother'?" Lila noted, her eyes sharp, and Ruth glared.
"Eh? She's playing…?" Kouko asked, looking at Lila carefully.
"Why yes dear," Lila noted with a charming smile, "I am playing the feared God Slayer herself, Dove Dillinger."
While Ruth wanted to smack her, and refrained, because, professionalism and all that, but Kouko, well, was Kouko...
"…But where are your boobs?"
Blake had to cover his mouth not to laugh, Sudachi looked at the little girl in shock, Kibble just stared at her chest, rather bluntly at that, Risa just rolled her eyes, and damn it, Ruth had to laugh. Only Kurai turned with a more innocent little smile at the, what she assumed was, an innocent inquiry.
Lila, however, was blushing like crazy and discreetly covering her chest with the first draft of their working script.
"Little girl, not everything has to be one-hundred percent true to real life!" Lila tried.
"Creative liberties I suppose," Ruth added with a little wink, before she tugged at both Kouko and Kibbles, "Anyways, excuse us, my duties are only to assist when you guys practice the dishes or say any culinary terminology, so until then, we'll be sitting down…"

And, to their credit, the team, even if small and incomplete, were quick to set everything up and begin this pre-rehearsal, line-reading thing Ruth had no idea how it worked, but her job was to fill in the gaps whenever the actors got stuck with the recipes or culinary terms, which at first, since they were jumping from scene-to-scene way out of chronological order, and with some very loose interpretations of some events, she had not needed to offer much input. Her biggest challenge was keeping Kouko and Kibbles to stay seated, since whenever she managed to get one to behave, the other had gotten up and was doing something he or she shouldn't. Why was the puppy the only one who knew how to behave?!
But it was during the third hour of this mess, that for once, Ruth felt… offended.
"Hey!" she called out, bringing the practice to a stop, mid-scene, as everyone there turned to her.
Lila, in particular, shifted her eyes from Kurai and towards Ruth, rather annoyed at having been interrupted mid-line read.
"I'm not reading a line about cooking," Lila noted, firmly.
"Yeah, because you can't read one if you tried," Ruth shot back, and stepped forwards, "But what the hell was that supposed to be?! You're playing my mom! Why are you making her sound like…?"
"Like a victim?" Lila concluded, and Ruth just narrowed her glare, "Sweetheart, that's what she was. Dove Dillinger signed off on this. I am portraying her properly."
"As if!" Ruth shot back, and the whole crew just looked at the two girls, wondering if they should tell the famous actress to step down or the famous culinary consultant to do so instead. They were sure both teenage girls outranked them all anyways... "My mom was not some little damsel in distress that needed to be saved!" Ruth continued, "She's a damn girlboss who owned every moment she was on screen, and the only person at the time to ever defeat Auntie Erina! Well… her and Ekaterina, but that one doesn't count! ...Auntie was sick."
"She was being manipulated and got saved," Lila countered, flatly, "That's what I'm portraying."
"You are making her out to be some whiney, airheaded bimbo who can barely articulate herself!" Ruth argued, "That's not at all my mom. That was a façade. Mom was, and still is, one of the best, if not the best chef of her entire generation. I won't let you destroy her image by making her into a boy crazy idiot!"
"Dillinger, please, let us work," Blake voiced, clearly annoyed, his eyes on her, "In order to make the narrative flow better we need to simplify some things. We are doing only ten episodes, three dedicated to the Hiei Showcase, seven to the Intercontinental Shokugeki. That's it. We can't fit everything in here to make it like you want it to be."
"Oh, who asked you?" Ruth turned to him, her arms crossed against her chest, "You're also doing it wrong. My dad wasn't as ruthless as you are making him out to be. He could have won, twice, and he didn't because he loves my mom too much."
"Hey now…" Blake noted, and before he even said it, Ruth's eyes showed nothing but sheer… malice, "I'm not playing your daddy, just Asahi."
"Don't you dare," Ruth warned, and her tone got so low that Kurai quickly got in the way.
"H-Hey, easy, I know we are behind schedule and tensions are high, but that's not a professional way to talk at all," she said, before she turned to Blake, "Ruth Dillinger is our consultant, you have to show her some respect."
"Come on, I didn't mean anything by that," Blake merely voiced, "She knows what I meant."
"Do not make me pull receipts Blake," Ruth warned again, "I know your family just as much as you do mine…"
At this, both of them just glared, and as Kurai stammered, and Risa just watched, Sudachi softly interrupted.
"Let's all try to get along, okay?" he offered, before he tugged at his sister and pulled her back, making her squirm in place, "And you, behave. Stop offending the girl whose mother you are portraying."
"Hey! Stop! I didn't say anything wrong!"
"No need for that Sudachi," Blake offered, his eyes still on Ruth, "Go ahead Dillinger, pull out my family's dirty laundry. We can have fun seeing how low we can both go."
And as he grinned at that, Ruth looked on, and while she was so, so ready to just scream like a madwoman, she had learned from the best. From her mother and her father. Work smarter, not harder. And also… from her Uncles. Which meant… cheat. So, she pulled out her phone, surprising even Blake, and gave a quick call. There was a moment of silence, before Ruth just spoke.
"Auntie, I don't like this, shut it down," she just flatly stated, and hung up the call. All the actors and stagehands just stared, wondering what she meant, until…
"What the hell?!" a very worried Minori came out of the office, her expression utterly pale. "I just got a text from our studio's President saying we need to do whatever Ruth Dillinger says or he's shutting down the project! What happened?!"
Everyone froze.
And slowly…
They turned to Ruth…
Who had the biggest shit-eating grin imaginable.
"…You," Blake muttered in barely hidden anger, and she just smirked.
"That, Blakey, is real power, something your parents know nothing about," she said rather triumphantly, before she turned to the group. "And, speaking of, I do not like how you," she pointed at Lila, "Portray my mom, so nope, you're out. Pick a different role."
"W-What?! You can't just recast me just like that?!" Lila screamed, utterly shocked, while everyone stared.
"H-Hey, Ruth, I get it, my sister can be a bit… mean, at times," Sudachi offered, and while Lila pouted at him, he still added, "But we do need someone to portray you mother, so…"
"Don't care," Ruth shut down, "If you can't portray her right, better she not appear at all. I don't care if she signed or not. This is Totsuki. And in here, I don't care how much of a bigshots you all are, this is my kingdom. I make the rules."
And as everyone tried their best not to glare at this girl about to shut down their entire project because of her pride alone, Kurai, with a little knowing smile, turned to the newest, first time Assistant Director, and one of her former Directors at that. The one young teen in this sea of hypocrisy she had grown to consider a true friend… "…Can you record this? I want to try something."
And Hajime Shinichi looked at her with a confused expression, but he still nodded, and took hold of the camara. Screentest number one, he supposed?
And Kurai walked right up to Ruth, and Ruth had to do a double-take, since she could swear this was another person entirely.
"That's nice and all," Kurai cut her off, stepping right in front of her, between Lila and Ruth, her eyes sending glares in the girl's general direction. "But we came here on business. Go back to your cooking or whatever, since our business is not with you."
"Oh, jealous much?" Ruth noted, insulted at this little actress now showing her true colors. Meanwhile Kurai just scoffed at the accusation. "I know why you're here child star, no need to put up a front now. But I expected more respect from you, you know, what with me being handpicked by you know who?"
"And that matters to me why?" Kurai shot back, crossing her arms across her chest and staring Ruth down, who kept her smirk in place.
"Because who else was it? Who is your Talent Manager who handpicked me because of my talents, huh?" Ruth replied, all smirks, and Kurai paused for a moment, her eyes widening a bit. "That's right!" Ruth added, then shifting her posture and pointing at Kurai with both her hands. "Yo' Momma, that's who! She saw the real potential in me. Something that I'm painfully aware you haven't managed yet. Sucks, huh?"
And as everyone stared in shock, and Ruth gave out the smuggest grin imaginable, fully expecting to break this dumb little actress and whatever this attempt to sound tough was, what she got instead was…
"Yes! That's it!" Kurai cheered, all the sudden, and everyone, especially Ruth, just stared, blanky. Kurai then, excitedly, turned to Shinichi, "Did you get all that?!"
"Sure did!" he noted with a thumbs up.
"Eh?" Ruth voiced, tilting her head a bit, "D-Did you just trick me? You were acting?!"
"Yeah, a scene from episode five, when Erina and Dove have a small argument at the Resort's pool!" Kurai explained, and everyone slowly caught on. "And you… went a bit off-script, but it was all natural. You really are her daughter after all!" Kurai added, and as Ruth had no idea what to say, Kurai then turned again, "Miss Director, maybe we can have her take part? We are understaffed and behind schedule, are we not?"
"What?! Wait, no way! She can't play Dove! She can't act!" Blake quickly complained.
"Kurai! That's my role!" Lila added, fuming.
"We have a lot more roles to fill out!" Kurai simply said, all smiles, "And, I kinda agree with Ruthie here," Kurai added, ignoring Ruth's small 'don't call me that' before saying, "You are playing Dove way to superficially. I think Ruth could manage it better. And we can get you a meaty, fan favorite part for your performance. Come on, it'll be the for the best," she then turned back to Ruth, outright stars in her eyes, "Whatcha say?!"
"…I'd say you're insane…"
"For once, I agree with her," Blake added, and Ruth just flipped him off.
"Okay, screw you, I'll do it just to spite you!"
"Dillinger! Come on, look, I'm sorry for what I said, but this is massive for all of us!" Blake tried, he really did, "I'm playing… you dad, and if you play your mom, look, I don't want to kiss you, not after…"
"Eh? Wait, we have to kiss?!" for once, Ruth face got a bit heated, even if nobody could tell if it was embarrassment or indignation.
"There's a kiss between Asahi and Dove?" Lila asked, also confused.
"I think they haven't decided on that yet," Sudachi offered.
"Miss Director…" Kurai repeated, and the older woman just sighed. Between the star power Kurai held, and the culinary royalty that was Ruth, she couldn't quite argue against them. Not if she wanted a career after this.
"…Fine, we can work something out," she offered, "Ruth Dillinger can take a screentest, if she wishes, and if she passes, we can accommodate her, and accommodate Lila as well."
As Lila pouted at this, Ruth, not wanting to do this at all but enjoying making both Blake and Lila squirm, just nodded. And then she felt a tug on her skirt yet again, and yet again, saw Kouko looking up at her, the most pleading look imaginable on the younger girl's face. And she sighed…
This was a horrible idea.
"…I do have… one last condition though…" a very hesitant Ruth added.
-0-
"So, you caved?" her former Director and chief, the famous Fukashi Yukio, asked her, and Minori sighed. She knew her first directing gig wouldn't come easy, but this was too much. Still…
"Yeah, but… I trust Kurai. I trust Shinichi too. They have an eye for this sort of thing," she noted, as she placed down the second draft of the script she had just finished helping the writers with, "Accommodating all these kids will be a hassle, but… I think I can actually make something good with this, if they don't kill themselves first…"
Because, it was a risk, to do such a massive project with so many rookies and non-actors in such important roles, but it did sound fun. Because, quite frankly, that cast list was starting to take shape. And it looked… very unique…
Lila Violet – Urara Kawashima
Sudachi Violet – Satoshi Isshiki
Risa Morisaki – Nene Kinokuni
Matsuoka Itou – Etsuya Eizan (confirmation pending)

"Let's just say I have a good feeling about this, okay?" Minori noted with a small smile, as she left the new working script seated on the table, the working title visible in big, bold letters...
Said title?
