Roxanne would never have imagined in a million years that her life would turn out the way it did. She attended the college she went to in Dallas for four years and once her college lectures were over, she went straight to Jake's penthouse to clean it and look after his son Jimmy. She went there every day and she never had a day off. She even had to work on her birthday, on Thanksgiving, on Christmas Day and on days when she was very unwell. Roxanne going to college and then working most days didn't affect her dad much because he was always busy himself cleaning dwellings that belonged to his best friend and boss Gary. And, as Jake was also Gary's son, Marcus always encouraged his daughter to go ahead and do these jobs, even if she didn't enjoy the jobs or even got paid. In fact, he always told her to do exactly what Jake told her to do, no matter how difficult it was.
The more Roxanne worked for Jake, the more she saw how Jake and his servants were hard at work, which was still not hard work at all. They hung around the penthouse and chilled and relaxed and would only work when Jake wanted something. It was Roxanne who was working the hardest out of everyone in the penthouse, being Jake's maid cleaning the whole penthouse from top to bottom every day and also being his son Jimmy's nanny as well. And even though Jake never paid her, despite he promised he would, she kept working for him because this was still the job she could have. She tried to apply for different jobs, including volunteer jobs and internships that could lead her to a job, but still no one would take her onboard.
At first, Roxanne only became Jimmy's nanny because Jake forced her to do and he still didn't pay her for that any more than he paid her to do the cleaning of his penthouse. But the more she attended to Jimmy, she did more for the boy's sake and less for Jake who couldn't bother attending to him, even on days when he wasn't working. He always made excuses such as he was had important meetings or he had to go and see someone or he was too tired because of a hard day's work, when Roxanne knew that he was really just socializing with his friends and he only had to 'work hard' two hours a day, even when he took over his father's company Morten Enterprises in 2001 after Gary tragically died when his private plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean after returning from a successful business trip to London. And all his servants said they were too busy themselves to even help Roxanne with Jimmy let alone keep an eye on him. Even though Jake and his servants barely worked, Roxanne never confronted them about it because she had nowhere else to go and she would very worry if she would do something that would make him sack her or do something even worse to her.
And the more time Roxanne spent with Jimmy, the more she felt she started to develop an affection for him and bond with him on her own terms. She began to view him as a son to her and she still hadn't thought about having children ever in her whole life. But she knew that someone had to raise him and she knew that it wasn't going to be his own irresponsible dad at all. Roxanne would change Jimmy's diapers, bathe him, clothe him, feed him and take him for a ride in his pram. She would also read to him and she would play with him whenever she could and she would take him to baby classes to make sure that she was doing everything right for him. And she would spend some of her money that she earned when she helped her dad clean Gary Morton's dwellings in Summer 1997 (and Jake still never paid a penny for her two new jobs ever since he gave them to her) to pay for fresh new diapers, new clothes and the right foods for Jimmy. And she continued to be his nanny when he was a toddler and a very young child. She taught him how to walk, how to eat and drink on his own, how to speak, how to dress himself and how to behave when he was the correct age to do those things to the very best of his ability. She even helped him find his favorite hobbies, which were writing stories, baking with her and his most favorite of all, drawing pictures. And she did all that without the support of Jake.
Jake would spend time with Jimmy, but every time he did, it was always very rare and it was always so awful. No matter how well Jimmy meant and no matter how hard he tried to impress his father, he always failed. When Jake wanted his son to do something he wanted to do, he never encouraged him; he always forced him to do it like he was a soldier. And he never congratulated his son for doing anything, even if it was to the very best of his ability. Every drawing Jimmy did, Jake would always say, 'It's no Da Vinci, it's no Van Gogh and it sure ain't no Walt Disney.' Every time Jimmy took part in a sports event and always did his very best, Jake would either told him that he did terrible when he lost or the judges were being too generous to him when he won. And when Jake had to take Jimmy to special events and warned him to be on his very best behavior, Jimmy behaved the very best he could, but it was not good enough to impress his dad. Jake would always say how much he embarrassed him and let him down. And Jake would always blame Roxanne for how Jimmy was turning out to be and he would criticize her very harshly for not doing a good job with his son, when he was the father.
Jake would buy a few things for Jimmy, like cards and presents for his birthdays and Christmases but he would leave them for him to open while he went to 'work'. Jake never spent time with Jimmy on his birthday or on Christmas Day. Again, that was up to Roxanne to make sure that Jimmy wasn't all alone on those special days. And Jake would also pay to get Jimmy in Dallas's very best day care center and the best elementary school, where Jimmy started in kindergarten when he was old enough to attend to them. Despite that, Jake still never went to them, not even on parent-teacher conferences to see how well Jimmy was doing. Again, he left that all for Roxanne to do and if anything went wrong with Jimmy's education, he would blame her for it.
As if dealing with Jake wasn't torture enough, Roxanne and Jimmy had to deal with his next girlfriend Nikita, who he met at his college in Dallas in 2000. She was just as rich, spoilt and abusive as he was. He even invited her to live with him in his penthouse. Jake forced Jimmy to treat Nikita like his mom and even call her 'mom' so he would get use to her when she becomes his proper stepmother when he marries her sometime after they graduate college.
Roxanne and Jimmy would always comfort each other after dealing the ogre Jake and her awful girlfriend Nikita. Roxanne would always tell Jimmy it was never his fault and he was fine the way he was, no matter what his father told him, and Jimmy always comforted her when he spent time with her and he hugged her.
Roxanne always wondered if she could ever leave Jake, but there were always two things that stopped her doing so. The first one was she might never work ever again and might have no purpose in her life ever again and the second one was what would happen to Jimmy, who she developed a very strong bond with. Sure, Jake would hire a new maid and nanny, but Roxanne didn't think she would ever forgive herself if she just left Jimmy to his father's abuse and she wasn't there to comfort him.
Then came a third reason why Roxanne couldn't leave Jake and that was when her dad died early in 2002 when he got hit by a truck. If she didn't have Jimmy in her life, she would have felt truly alone. Her dad was her last living relative. Her mom died in a car crash when she was only three years old and when she visited him in one of Dallas's hospitals which was the last time she saw and spoke to him before he died she just learned for the first time in her life that she had a sister. An identical twin sister called Emma and she died the same night as their mom. Marcus never told Roxanne about Emma because he thought losing her mom would be stressful and upsetting enough and she wouldn't be able to handle what happened to her sister. Roxanne never said anything to her dad and she knew that he meant well, but she was very hurt. Not just because her twin sister died along with their mom, but because her dad never told her about her at all. Roxanne had no uncles, no aunts, no cousins, no grandparents and no other relatives.
Because she couldn't afford burial services for her dad, Roxanne had to have her dad cremated. And she and Jimmy were the only ones who attended his funeral and gave a eulogy. No one else came. During the ceremony, she once again pretended that Max Goof was there to support her, though she was grateful Jimmy was there to keep her company and comfort her as best as a four-year-old could.
Roxanne had more problems. Her dad left enough money in his will for her, but there was only enough for his funeral and for the last rent for their apartment. She had to move out of the apartment after she paid for her final rent.
When Roxanne told Jake about it, he still didn't pay her, but he did live in his penthouse and have a room to herself for free. She didn't really want to move into the penthouse, but as she had nowhere else to go, she had to accept it. Besides, Roxanne liked the room she was given. It wasn't too big, it had a nice bed, a nice closest, a nice set of drawers and everything that everyone needed for living. It was better than being homeless. But the best thing at living in the penthouse was Jimmy and he was glad that she was living in the penthouse with him.
And Roxanne continued to clean Jake's penthouse and be the mother figure Jimmy needed every day, even after she graduated from her college in 2002.
