DM77's Psychonauts Chapter 13
A Goldeen Pursuit
As Nigel exits Wiz's lab it was night time and while those bears were gone psychically charged cougars took their place so he had to avoid them and makes his way to the beach area.
When Nigel arrived he notices Nelson walking up to him. He gets a bit nervous and said "Nelson! Uh oh. Look, I can explain…" Nelson walks up to him and he braces himself.
"TV?" Nelson said in the same brainless tone DJ and the others who lost their brains said. But he does stop and smacks Nigel in the arm and keeps going "TV!"
'Well…that was something" Nigel thinks
"Ahhh-Chooo!" Someone lets out down at the beach and Nigel reagonized the voice as Rachel's and rushes down to see her.
Nigel goes to her as she rubs her nose and said "Geez, it sounds like you caught a bad cold."
"Maybe but LISTEN!" Rachel said and began to explain what she found "I traced the psychic interference back to Couch Sarge's radio! He's been broadcasting his insane plot all over camp in his sleep!"
"So, he's really kidnapping children and stealing their brains to make weapons!" Nigel said thinking on it.
"Yes! Isn't that great?" Rachel said smiling.
"What? How is that great?" Nigel asked confused.
"Because this is an honest-to-goodness psychic emergency!" Rachel said happily.
"And Wiz's not here! He left on some 'official Psychonauts business.'" Nigel said thinking on it.
"Felicia left a note saying the same thing!" Rachel said wide eyed.
Nigel grabs Rachel's arms and said to her "Rachel, a deranged madman is building an army of psychic death tanks to take over the world, and there's no one who can stop him except for you and me!"
"Oh my god! Let's make out!" Rachel said and moves to try.
"Uh, what?" Nigel said taken aback by that and blushed a bit.
Rachel quickly looks away blushing and said "Sorry! I'm just so excited!" Something moves in the bushes nearby and between the two pops out a slice of pizza attached to a string but neither noticed it "Since you showed up Nigel, things are so much more exciting!" The hiding presence pulls back the pizza and puts out an electronic device of some kind again neither noticed as Rachel walks around "Sinister death plots! Mad scientists! Hideous monsters!"
"Make out?" Nigel asked mind still on that. The hidden presence pulls back and tries temping with some jewellery, again neither noticed.
"How long have I ignored what this camp had to offer? Everything new to me now thanks to you!" Rachel said as she moves back to where she started smiling, the presence tries to tempt them with a flower this time, and Rachel sees it when she turns around "I mean, look at this flower!"
"You mean, like…kiss?" Nigel asked blushing a bit.
"How many years have I been coming here and I've never even noticed a cool flower like this before?" Rachel said and the two kids look at it and she picks it up.
Suddenly it was revealed to be attached to an angler and lowered down and grabs Rachel by the head. Out of the blushes came a huge mutant Goldeen with an angler fish's antenna instead of a horn and it had arms and legs. It roars and Nigel tries to attack it but is knocked back.
"Oh no! You didn't just hit my boyfriend!" Rachel said to the mutant fish pokemon, she was then placed into the Goldeen's mouth and the creature heads to the water.
"Rachel!" Nigel said worried recovering and gives chase but stops when near the water as he sees it go under the water.
"Let's get them!" Raine said after their head comes out of Nigel's ear.
"I…can't. I can't swim." Nigel said sadly.
"Well then use the bathysphere at the end of the dock!" Raine explained "Quick, while the flipper prints still glowing!"
"Are you coming? I don't know how to drive that thing." Nigel asked them.
"Uh…I can't." Raine said nervous "I have to uh…check on the other children! Yes, yes! If their brains are out they'll need supervision. And possibly refrigeration…And how can you not know how to operate a bathysphere? Haven't you ever been to summer camp before? Now get a move on before that girl gets overly digested." Raine then goes back into Nigel's head.
Nigel felt like Raine was hiding something, plus he figured best to see if he could round up some of the other kids, so using Raine's secret mine rail system heads for Raine's sanctuary.
When he arrived he notices Raine on the other side of the area by a hallway he hasn't gone down before.
"Nigel, come up here." Raine said to him solemly "There's something you should see."
"Alright." Nigel said and goes up them and down the hall, it leads to Raine standing by a console with an observation window.
When Nigel looks in he sees a shocking sight, all the other kids minus Rachel of course sitting their with the same brainless blank stare watching TV.
"You're the only one left son." Raine said sadly. "Can't even make a connection with Wiz or Felicia right now for some reason…"
"Wiz said he had some official Psychonauts business…" Nigel told them.
"Impossible. I would know it if they did." Raine said shaking their head "Nope, something's happened to them. Nigel, listen. You're the only one who can stop Sarge now."
"What about you?" Nigel asked them.
"I…I can't leave this cave, Nigel." Raine said sighing. "Well, not as the Raine Whispers you know."
"What? Why?" Nigel asked confused.
"Years ago, I was in a terrible psychic duel that left me barely alive." Raine explained.
"Yeah, I read about that." Nigel said nodding "They said your psyche was shattered, that you lost your mind, but…you seem fine to me."
"Yes, when I'm down here, near the Psitanium mother lode." Raine said nodding explaining "The concentrated power of the Psitanium pulls my thoughts together, keeps me…like my old self. But if I leave this sanctuary my psyche becomes disjointed, and I fall into one of my other personalities, with no memory of who I really am." Raine sighs saying "I'll be no use to you, unless you needed something raked…or mopped…"
"Well, you can call headquarters and get help!" Nigel suggested smiling.
"The Psychonauts won't listen to me." Raine told him "They wrote me off as a loon years ago. That's why Wiz and Felicia have to take on all my missions. Headquaters doesn't know I'm the one behind the assignments or they'd never get approved. But Wiz and Felicia seem to be out of commission now." They then point to Nigel "You have to be my field agent, Nigel Uno. Are you ready?"
"Yes!" Nigel said with a nod after thinking.
"Good." Raine said smiling "You have to find where that monster Pokemon took the girl, and if toy locate any of the other children's brains along the way, bring them back to me for recanalization, understand?"
"Ew, I mean, yes I understand!" Nigel said to that saluting.
He then rushes off back to the docks.
Once he arrives he goes into it and opens up the bathysphere and gets it, once it is sealed it drops into the water and sinks to the bottom of the lake, it stops mid air on a giant bubble before slipping in and drips like a rock on the ground and Nigel is knocked out of it.
Nigel gets up and looks around and found he could breath and wasn't touching any water. He looks and sees the glowing flipper prints of the mutant Goldeen and follows them and is at an old sunken bell tower. He grabs and climbs up the rope and it is pulled and the bell rings.
Nigel jumps down and hopes that this will attract the Goldeen and it indeed does as the mutated Goldeen emerges from the hole it was in and Nigel sees it swim up to the bubble.
"Okay, cough up the girl and no one gets hurt, fish!" Nigel told it. It roars at him and he said "Man, it's gonna be hard to find a good place to leave you some bruises."
The Goldeen then goes to suck up the area attacting a lot of junk to it and Nigel dodges before spitting it out. Nigel at first was confused on what to do but then sees among the junk crate of nails and as the suction happens, Nigel smacks it breaking it open and the nails fly up and injure the Goldeen a bit.
"Don't like the taste of nails I see, well plenty more where that came from!" Nigel said now knowing how to hurt it without getting too close to it.
He then does it two more times, but after the third time, the Mutant Goldeen places it's hands on the air bubble and begins pushing it, making it move. Nigel realizing it's trying to force Nigel out of it runs down the pathway revealed as they pass through an entire sunken town arriving on top of a undersea cliff where the fight resumed.
It starts out the same way with the mutant Goldeen spiting out undersea junk in it's system and then sucking it back in, Nigel locates boxes of nails and breaks them open to damage the Pokemon when it begins to suction whirlwind. He does this three times again and the Mutant Goldeen begins to push the bubble again making Nigel run to stay in it through more of the sunken village. After going down a grind rail the Muten Goldeen enters the bubble to face him head on.
"Oh you want to fight mano-e-monsto! Fine by whoa!" Nigel said but dodged as it swong it's angler at him "Not good!"
The monster closes the gap and swings again, Nigel dodges and the angler goes near a giant clam and it shuts trapping then angler and leaving the mutant Goldeen stuck. Nigel seeing an opportunity moves in and smacks the beast a bit until it got free.
"I see, well then time to play bait." Nigel said smiling.
He intentially lured to clams so the angler would get trapped and he can get some free hits in and did this till it was beaten into a dazed state looking lost and confused.
Raine comes out of Nigel's ear and said "Aw, poor little thing."
"That 'poor little thing' just tried to kill me about eight different ways." Nigel said in disbelief.
"Well, that's not it's fault." Raine told him and explained "This was once a normal sized non-mutated Goldeen, minding it's own business in a nice little pond underneath the water." They then motion Nigel to look closer and Nigel can see machine parts and plates attached to the Mutant Goldeen as they contined "But judging by the work done on it, I suspect Sarge has mutated it, accelerated its growth, and has place and implant in its brain to make it do his evil bidding."
"Whoa. Poor little thing." Nigel said sadly, he didn't notice it until Raine pointed it out, all he saw was a monster trying to eat him, he didn't stop to ask how it came to be and why.
"Yeah. Go inside there and try to smash the implant!" Raine told Nigel "Use the Psycho-Portal I saw you steal from Wiz's lab."
"Oh, uh, yeah." Nigel said then asked "That works on big, scary monster Pokemon?"
"Oh, monster-schmonster! That thing is more afraid of you than you are of it!" Raine told him. "Now get in there!" They go back into the ear."
"All right" Nigel said getting the Pscyho-Portal out and goes to the mutant Goldeen "Alright this won't hurt a bit, I hope"
He throws the portal, and it attaches to the Goldeen's forehead and opens up, Nigel sorts his shades and he feels his mind get sucked out of him and into the portal, entering the mutant Goldeen's mind.
Well next time Nigel will enter the mental world of a mutated Goldeen to break Sarge's control of it. Stay tuned.
