"It all started when I learned that I'm pregnant with you. I couldn't lose another child. I took every precaution to ensure you will be born healthy. We started performing all sorts of tests and the genetic enhancements."
"However, there was one thing we couldn't change, and it was the fact that you are a girl. I was thrilled to have a daughter. Thinking of my own relationship with my mother. But I also knew how my father would react. So we never mentioned your gender to him."
"It was a mistake. I went to another base in secret for your birth. Hoping that I can take you to your father after your birth and away from my own. Someone must have told him about where I was right after your birth. When my father came to see his grandson, he discovered the truth. He was furious. He tried to take you from me, and I begged him to spare you, telling him about all you would be capable of."
"He didn't listen and broke your neck. Killing you. I wailed and begged him to give me your body. It seemed to break him out of his fury as he noticed what he truly did. He was always about the family, and now he killed his own. So he took you to the pit, hoping to fix what he did."
"Something unexpected happened. The pit glowed as it never had before. It seemed as if all the pit's energy got concentrated into a single spot. The energy was so heavy it could be felt all over the room. Then, the pit stopped glowing. The green water was no longer green but normal murky water. But your body was glowing in the water."
"I rushed into the water, not thinking about anything else, and took you out. As soon as you were out, you started crying." Mother took a deep breath to calm herself before continuing with the story.
"We performed many tests to find what might have happened, but we never found an explanation. You were completely healthy. Your body seemed to have an accelerated healing rate, but everything else was as it should be. The only difference was that you no longer had blue eyes like your father but green."
"I did not care as long as you were alive. The development seemed to please Father as he didn't make another attempt on your life. The stress my body went through after your birth meant that I could never carry another child, and I think knowing that I cannot give him an heir played a role in it."
"We took you back to Nanda Parbat. Everything seemed to be normal. You showed no side effects from healing by the pit. Except for one thing. Every time you were close to the pit, you would cry and scream uncontrollably."
"I kept you away as much as I could, but as you started crawling, you kept crawling to the pit, staring at it for hours on end. No matter where we were, if there was a pit nearby, you had to find it. It was as if you were drawn to them. You would simply stare without doing anything. If you were kept away when the pit was closed, you would show symptoms of withdrawal. I tried to work with doctors to find some medication to control it, but it seemed it was to no avail. You had a connection to the pits and had to be near them if they were close." Her mother then continued to clear up a few more events from her childhood, but it was all becoming clear now.
She had to go back to Gotham. She bid her mother goobye as she headed for the airport.
She didn't notice the passage of time as she was drowning in her thoughts. What her mother told her revealed so much to her. She also received the news that Cain was successful in performing her part.
Jade would reach the manor late at night, so they had to set their meeting for the next day. She would also get scolded for leaving without permission, but she didn't care much about it.
There were a few texts from Tim asking her if she was ok and if she needed his help. She answered that she was alright and was going back to the manor, and there was no need for him to cut his mission short.
She also answered the worried texts from Jason and Grayson. She didn't tell them when she would arrive in case they wanted to ambush her and ask where she went to.
She still wasn't comfortable talking about her mother with them. While they would be accepting, it was still complicated. Being in contact with her was dangerous, and she understood that. But she was her mother, and she wanted to have a relationship with her.
Hopefully, they wouldn't be home when she got there.
It turned out that she was out of luck. As soon as she got to her room, Jason was waiting for her, sleeping on her bed. He woke up as soon as she opened the window. To her credit, she didn't try to run away.
They were both too tired to argue at that hour, so he begrudgingly moved to one side and made room for her to sleep next to him. She quickly changed into more comfortable clothes and went to sleep.
