This is also very mildly an Immortal Moon S Chapter for Naru/Sapphire
Detective Towa stood patiently looking on from the observation room while he waited for Shizuho to be brought in for questioning. He couldn't figure out why he was invited to observe other than the fact that he had been the one to inform Detective Artemis about her connection to Jiji. Something that he had already gotten official recognition for.
Still, he was invited, and he jumped at the chance. Everyone knew that Artemis was a skilled technician at questioning a suspect, and he relished the opportunity to observe and learn from a master.
He had read the pre-report, and not only was Artemis going to be there doing the questioning, but Chief Hatori and the Medical Examiner Yamato would be observing with him. He was to be among those at the top of the pecking order at the station.
The incorrect rumor that was generally accepted as accurate was that Artemis had been offered the role of Chief first but that he had turned it down. The speculation was that it was due to the scare that he had gotten when he believed that his pregnant wife had died in the explosion. It had been obvious how relieved he had been when she had surfaced quickly after the event and told everyone that she had stepped out of the office over a pregnancy craving for mochi.
Of course, no one knew the truth: without Usagi's interference, she would have died in the explosion, and the mochi was a lie to hide supernatural involvement. Not even Detective Itsuki knew that much.
The rest of the rumor went that Hatori was chosen after Artemis's refusal and that Artemis had promised to assist the new chief and show the man his full support. Despite being the incorrect assumption, that fact had quickly gotten Hatori everyone's cooperation.
So when Detective Towa was invited to participate, he was honored. He believed he was included with two men worthy of being Police Chief and the Medical Examiner whom everyone deeply respected.
He heard the door to the observation room open, and he looked over and saw Yamato enter. The man, who seemed uncharacteristically exhausted, nodded his head at him, and Towa introduced himself.
"It's good to meet you, Detective Towa," Yamato said in response.
"How's your intern handling this? It has to be hard after he experienced you being kidnapped."
Yamato observed the Detective and weighed his words. After all, he asked what came naturally to him and showed genuine concern. The issue was, by all accounts, the man was sharp. That meant he might be able to tell when Yamato was holding back. And now, once the story of Minako started to filter out, the detective was going to have even more questions floating around in his head.
He was about to answer, but Towa held up his hand to stay his words. He said, "I realize something larger is happening in this investigation. I'm not going to keep asking questions. I was just thinking that he is very young and not trained for this kind of intrigue."
Yamato nodded, grateful for the out, and then said what he could do: "It's difficult for him. He believes that the girl was only killed because she happened to move into his old apartment —that's gotten to him." Yamato then asked the question at the forefront of his mind. "What do you mean by something larger going on?"
"Last time someone from your office was kidnapped, the police station was blown up in the middle of the day. Now that the mystery woman and Jiji went to Mamoru's apartment and did not find him there, the current resident and Jiji were killed. Something is up, and I am not asking what it is. I'm only saying that to tell you I won't keep asking questions that I'm not cleared to know."
Yamato nodded thoughtfully as Hatori stepped into the room. The Chief said, "They are bringing in Shizuho soon." He then read the room and cocked his head. "What?"
"You can live with not having your questions answered about the overall picture?" Yamato asked Towa in a pseudo-answer to Hatori.
"Of course I can. I'm not owed any explanation about why. I want to do what I can to assist and to prevent another tragedy."
Yamato then turned to Hatori and said, "The speculation is going to be huge after this. And…"
Hatori agreed. He knew that the talk around the station included a lot about a coming attack and the future safety of everyone who worked there. Now, with an actual attack on Minako, it would be worse. He said, "Mamoru is on temporary leave right now. We don't want anyone tracking him from the station."
Detective Towa smirked, "Ah. I understand, Chief. Is there anything else you want me to pass along?" He figured out why he was included today. Everyone knew he had informed the Chief about Shizuho, and now they all knew he had seen her being questioned. It meant that everyone would go to him with questions, and now Hatori was telling him what to pass along when asked.
"Yamato is being moved to an undisclosed location, so he can't be tracked to Mamoru." The fact was, he had moved into Kunzite's newly empty room. Nephrite had improved the security system when Diamond was still alive, and it was about to house three hybrids, two vampires, and one massively powerful vampire-witch that could keep an eye on his safety.
Looking at Yamato, Towa asked, "So you were living at the same place as your intern?" He then paused and blushed. "Strike that. I rescind that question." It was hard for him not to ask questions. His training had taught him to get answers, and he was trying to resist them.
Hatori let the question go and said, "You're not being brought in on the investigation. It's not your department, frankly. But, if you can continue to assist us without demanding answers, as you have proved so far, we could use your help occasionally." He knew the man was trying to suppress his instincts.
"I'd be honored."
Just then, Artemis stepped into the interrogation room on the other side of the one-way glass and sat down. Towa observed him do that and asked, "He's not making her wait? And I do mean that question. I want to learn his methods."
Hatori kept his eyes on Artemis but answered Towa. "She's not a detective, but she would know the typical protocol. He wants her to be thrown off and not have time to get comfortable."
They then watched as Shizuho was led in cuffs and chained to the table by them. "Wow," Towa said. They aren't taking it easy on her." The other two could hear the tone of his voice and could tell he approved of the tactic. He then added, "With all that training she received on the importance of maintaining our security, she was stupidly lax. Do you think that's dawned on her yet?"
"She cried last night," Hatori replied. "Although most do in jail."
They then heard Artemis's voice come over the speaker. "So, what kind of sexual favor did he do to get you to sell out a colleague?"
She looked up abruptly and said, "I didn't sell anyone out. I was having sex with Jiji, but he didn't get anything out of me!"
Artemis laid a sheet of paper down on the table in front of her and pointed to a place about two-thirds of the way down. "This shows you accessing Mamoru's address from your work computer on your day off. Go ahead and try to come up with a better lie. I'll wait."
"I'm telling the truth!" She shot out, not even looking at the printout.
Tisking at her in response, Artemis then said, "You should have chosen to hire an attorney. Then they would be able to tell you that we have enough information to convict you and have you thrown into prison."
"I didn't do it!" She objected vociferously.
Artemis was glad she was being stubborn. It meant he could use Luna's research against her. He then proceeded to pick apart her whole life. He mentioned many things from her past in vivid and minute detail. She couldn't figure out how he could know even a fraction of that information about her. He had to work hard the whole time not to let his pride in his wife show.
Once he saw his knowledge of her completely unsettled her, he paused and said, "Tell me. What makes you end up betraying one of us?"
By that point, she was shaking. "I didn't access that information! I guess… I think he did. He must have used me. He probably was using her, too. I wasn't the first from here that he slept with."
Artemis looked at her in surprise. "Wait. Who?!"
"Hana," Shizuho replied, happy to be able to shock the great Artemis.
Naru slid onto Sapphire's lap, straddling him and rubbing herself against his manhood. It startled him out of his dark mood, just like she had hoped it would. "Piss me off, and I will call Bastet and maybe even Mars too. I'm sure they could help me figure out a prison that can hold a vampire."
He didn't even pretend to miss her meaning. "She just wasn't careful —it could be done. Diamond was a monster, but I learned a lot from him."
Leveling a sharp look at him, Naru said, "No! As soon as I heard what she did, I knew that was what you'd been hinting at lately. You were going to do something stupid too! She just got to it first!"
"I have a lot of making up for the past to do. I did some horrible things," he replied sadly.
She canted her head to the side and gave him a hard look. "Broody again, I see. Fine. If you insist on feeling that way, I can't fight you. However, do you want to prove to Usagi that you can't be trusted?" She knew she was fighting dirty but would protect him at all costs. If he were going to continue to feel like he needed to prove he should be forgiven over something that no one else was ever mad at him over, then she would use it to keep him from getting killed. "She doesn't want us going off on our own. How does breaking her trust prove your loyalty? Are you going to show her she shouldn't have trusted you?"
He sighed long and frowned, "You don't believe a word you're saying."
"But you do," she countered. "Checkmate."
He nodded slightly, conceding he lost to her, and said, "I was wrong about you on one thing when we first met. You have a Machiavellian streak in you."
Naru smirked at him and asked, "Are you calling my tactics unethical and amoral?"
Rolling his eyes, Sapphire said, "I was exaggerating for the sake of humor."
"I am amused," she said, rubbing her core against him. "Especially since I won."
