CHAPTER 2
Lex sat at her desk in the American Auror satellite office for the Ministry. She had a pile of case files on one side of her desk and on the other side, a file labeled GRANGER-WEASLEY. It was the file on her father's and siblings' murder and it was where she spent nearly all of her free time.
And that morning was no different. She knew she needed to read up on the real cases she would be working shortly, but after her morning with her mother, she wanted to spend time on her family file again.
She had been working on it for months, trying to sort out everything she could. It had taken her years to build the file, gathering official evidence from the ministry's investigation but also from things she'd heard while on the job, what death eaters were saying.
Lex was fairly certain she had worked some of it out. She believed now her family had died because some sort of prophecy related to her bloodline. What she couldn't work out was if it had to do with her mother's side, father's side, or both. She also didn't know what the prophecy could entail. After her father and siblings deaths nothing had changed much, so whatever was trying to be prevented, as far as Lex could tell, may not have been a bad thing or a bad thing was still coming. The latter would explain the growth in death eaters the ministry had seen but even those death eaters were hardly causing more then a slight ruckus, and nothing was overly dangerous or disturbing.
A knock on her office door causes Lex to look up, and she was surprised to see her older sister's former boyfriend, Scorpius Malloy, standing there.
"Malfoy, what are you doing here?" Lex stood and moved to give Scorpius a hug.
"Dealing with a case of underage magic, thought I would come say hi," Scorpius explained. After he had finished Hogwarts, he had taken up a job in Magical Law and was exceptionally good at it, known to be fair and kind, words hardly associated with the Malfoy family until Scorpius came along.
"Well it's good to see you," Lex said, settling back down in her chair. After Rose's death Scorpius had stayed close with Lex. At first, Lex thought it was strange but soon she realized he had the same desire she did; he wanted to understand why Rose had been taken from him.
"How's everything going with…" Scorpius thumbed the file on Lex's desk that had to do with her family.
"Not a big change since last time you stopped by," Lex said recalling when Scorpius had come by a few months earlier.
Scorpius nodded, biting his bottom lip, causing Lex to narrow her eyes at him.
"You know something…" Lex accused.
"I…may know something," Scorpius said, pushing his blonde hair out of his silver eyes.
"Well?" Lex pushed.
"Well I was supposed to meet with the Minister, and on my way to her office I saw her with your Uncle Harry and Kingsley Shacklebolt. They were…discussing something. I didn't catch everything but I heard your Mum's name and your uncle arguing with Cho and Kingsley that they couldn't be certain the prophecy was even real…and to not approach you until they did know," Scorpius explained.
"Approach me? And what was Kingsley even doing here? He's been retired for years," Lex said of the former Minister of Magic who her mother had taken over for before they had to lock her away.
"I think he spends a lot of time with Cho…mentoring if you will. I see him often at the Ministry, especially lately," Scorpius explained.
"Not shocked she needs mentoring…" Lex spoke of the current Minister of Magic, Cho Chang. Cho had taken over after Hermione but many felt it was purely political, to replace a female with another female, most agreed that Cho was smart and a good person, but she often let other department heads walk all over her, particularly Harry Potter who was in charge of the Auror Department.
"Well she certainly isn't your Mum," Scorpius said and he meant it. He had always admired Hermione when he had dated Rose. He couldn't deny she was smart, not even his father could, and he respected how she treated everyone and thing equally, trait she has passed onto Rose and one Scorpius had loved.
"What do you think they would even be talking about? Do you think they sorted out what we have? That's there's some sort of product attached to my blood line after all?" Lex asked. She had shared all the information she had been able to gather with Scorpius so he was well informed. She had so shared it with her Uncle Harry who always dismissed it as false.
Scorpius shrugged. "Part of me had been hoping they would have come to talk to you already. It's kind of why I'm here."
"No," Lex said simply, thinking hard about what it could be.
"Could you ask Finn?" Scorpius spoke of Lex's fiancé.
Lex rolled her eyes. That was the last person she wanted to ask about all of this. Finn had been kind and patient enough with Lex and all of the emotions that had come with Lex losing her family when they first started dating in Sixth Year, but his patience had waned as they grew older and it seemed like he wanted her to move on from her loss, but she would never be able to do that.
"Are you still that miserable with him? Why don't you just call it off then already?" Scorpius asked. He knew exactly how Lex felt about her fiancé, she had confided in him many times over the years. It was odd, but when Rose died and Hermione had basically left Lex all alone, Scorpius felt compelled to protect her, as if it was keeping Rose alive some how, and so over the years he had grown incredibly close with his ex-girlfriends little sister and it had not mattered what anyone thought of that. Even as he dated other women on and off through the years, his love for Rose and kept him close to Lex.
"It's complicated," Lex said simply, and it truly was. For some reason she just wasn't ready to let Finn go yet.
Later that night, Lex made her way down a small alley of the Wizarding World of New York City to a tiny pub called The Winking Owl. She was tired and really wanted to go home but she knew Finn was there and would want to talk about the wedding and things, so she figured spending a few hours in the pub would buy her some time.
Lex walked in and made herself comfortable at the bar. She ordered herself a beer and small glass of fire whiskey but quickly finished both. She sighed and ordered another round, which turned into another quickly. The alcohol had gone straight to her head but it made her forget about the days events, forget that it was her mothers birthday. That was, until she heard her mother's name being said behind her.
Lex turned to see a very drunk, heavy, older wizard with a short beard and red cheeks pointing at her.
"That's the old Minister's daughter. Granger-Weasley…the one who went looney," the wizard told two of the other wizards he was with.
Lex glared at the man speaking about her mother. She felt her ears turn red.
"How is she then? Your crazy mom?" The Wizard spoke loudly.
"Fine," Lex said, turning her attention back to paying her bill.
"Well what did anyone expect? A bloody Mudblood trying to be Minister? She probably just cracked. Did she actually kill your family? You just covering for her?" the Wizard repeated one of the worst rumors that had been started about what happened to Ron, Rose, and Hugo. Some people thought Hermione had attacked them but those rumors were mostly from people who did not want to see her basic successful or happy which was still a lot in the Wizarding World all because she was muggleborn.
The Wizards words caused Lex to slam her fist on the counter and before she knew it she had whipped her wand out and blasted the talking Wizard clear out of his seat. This action quickly caused retaliation from the Wizards friends and very quickly Lex found herself being kicked out into the street with a bloody nose.
"Call her Uncle!" The bartender shouted to someone behind him as he sat Lex on the sidewalk and handed her a napkin for her nose. "And don't come back here if you're going to stir up trouble."
Lex took the napkin but said nothing, all the alcohol mixed with adrenaline causing her to hardly think straight. By the time the bartender walked away, Lex saw her Uncle Harry standing in front of her.
"Why are you always in trouble?" Harry asked his niece with a sigh. The only response he got back was a shrug from Lex.
Lex found herself in the home she grew up in for the latter of her teen years, the home she lived in after half her family died, the home her mother almost killed her in: Uncle Harry and Aunt Ginny's home.
Her Uncle Harry had disaparated with her back to his home in London after her bar fight and Lex now found herself standing in his kitchen, surprising her Aunt who was up making tea to start her day.
"Merlin's beard!" Ginny whipped around, shocked to see her niece and husband. "Lex, what are you doing here? And what happened to your nose?"
Lex shrugged, her stomach a bit knotted up from the booze and then aparating with her uncle. "Ask Uncle Harry..."
"She got in a bar fight. I got called to pick her up," Harry explained.
"Shocking..." Ginny said sarcastically, but grabbed her wand and moved to examine Lex's nose. "It's broken. Do you want me to reset it?"
"Please," Lex barely got out before she felt her nose twist back into place. She let out a small grunt of pain, glad the booze had numbed her a bit.
"Fixed. Now, what were you fighting about?" Ginny asked.
"I'd like to know the same thing. I know you're one of my best Aurors, Lex, but I can't keep having to bail you out of things. Eventually the Minister is going to ask me to suspend you." Harry sighed. He loved his niece, but when she lost her temper, which was happening more often, he hated being her boss.
"They were talking about my Mum," Lex said simply.
Ginny looked at Harry with eyes telling him to give Lex some grace before turning back to her niece. "I'm sorry."
Lex just waved it off and rubbed her eyes. Between the pain from her nose and the hangover starting to set in, she just wanted to lie down.
"I think I need to lay down," Lex said.
"Your room is still setup if you would like to use it," Ginny said, motioning to the stairs. Since Lex had lived with the Potter's the second half of her Hogwarts career her aunt has kept a spare room set up for her, in case she ever needed to return as an adult.
"I appreciate it but I probably need to get back to New York. I'm sure Finn is wondering where I am," Lex sighed, thinking of the scolding her fiancé would probably give her upon her return. She knew it wouldn't come from anywhere other than concern but she didn't want to hear it.
"Speaking of...have you all decided on a wedding date yet? We've been getting asked a lot recently," Ginny said.
Lex just shook her head. "Honestly, no. I'm not even sure it's what I want anymore."
"Well if that's the case, you need to be fair to Finn. He's a nice guy and deserves to know that," Harry said. He was spending more time with Finn McLaggen since he was spending more time in Cho's office, trying to figure out a way to slow the sudden growth in death eater activity again. From what he had since, Finn was nothing like his father Cormac. He was smart, well mannered, not at all a showboat and although he was well liked by most women, he seemed to really only have eyes for Lex. Harry thought he would be a good match for Lex.
Lex sighed. "Okay, Uncle Harry. I'll see you at work next week?"
Harry nodded, knowing he had a trip to visit the New York Auror field office next week and get an update on all of their progress in the states.
"Thanks for fixing it," Lex pointed to her nose as she directed her comment toward her Aunt.
Ginny nodded as she watched Lex disapparate. Once she was alone with her husband she turned to Harry. "I feel like you are getting more and more calls about Lex lately doing things like this."
Harry sighed and slung himself down into a kitchen chair. "I know...bar fights, fights with other Aurors...I had one call last week where she nearly beat a death eater to death before we could even get any information out of him. It took two other Aurors to pull her off. I appreciate her dedication to the job but her temper lately..."
"Well, she always has had a small one...got that from Ron..." Ginny's voice trailed off as she spoke of her dead brother.
Harry looked at his hands. He missed his best friend. He missed Hermione as well. He didn't know which was worse, knowing Ron was gone forever or knowing Hermione was alive but had given up. After a long moment of silence he decided to change the subject.
"What's this about her not wanting to get married now? She seemed so happy with Finn when he asked her a few years ago," Harry was genuinely confused.
"Well, she's growing up. She's not the same girl she was at 24... Feelings can change," Ginny said.
"We got married young," Harry said.
"Different times...and different circumstances. We went through a massive tragedy together, Harry...Lex went through one but alone," Ginny explained.
"I know that, but at some point she's got to let go a little. She deserves a happy life. She's a good kid," Harry said.
"Her most important example of a marriage ended in tragedy and she's still dealing with the after effects. I mean, she went to see Hermione yesterday for her birthday. I'm sure that didn't help with any of this," Ginny said.
"She did? How do you know?" Harry was surprised by the news. He knew Lex's visits to Hermione had grown less and less frequent and part of him had hoped it was because she was learning to live her own life, trying her best to heal from a situation that would never correct itself.
"I went to see Hermione after. The nurse mentioned that Lex had been there to me. When I saw Hermione, she seemed to remember Lex had been there though it was fleeting," Ginny said, and then added. "Hermione is just getting worse, Harry. I can't imagine seeing her is helping Lex think any clearer."
Harry felt his cheeks go red and guilt rock his core. He himself had avoided going to see Hermione recently because he had noticed she was slipping more and more and he was ashamed of that. She was his best friend for years and he was certain if the roles were reversed Hermione would have never left his side but it was just too hard for him to see her like that.
"Maybe I should let Kingsley talk to Lex," Harry said with a sigh.
The shock was clear on Ginny's face at Harry's suggestion. "Harry, we know what a risk that is and for what? We don't even know if what Kingsley thinks is true. We could be risking Lex and...well her life for a guess."
"But what is there for Lex to lose? Suppose Kingsley is right...this could fix everything for Lex...for all of us really." Harry said.
"Suppose he isn't? It would crush Lex," Ginny said.
"No worse than she is now," Harry said.
"We swore to keep Lex safe, Harry. Is that what we would really be doing?" Ginny asked.
Harry just sighed. He did not know how to answer his wife.
