Chapter 5
Lex and Scorpius followed the directions Kingsley gave them and found themselves at a small flat in Diagon Alley. The flat was small, with two small bedrooms, a tiny kitchen with a round table, and a bathroom.
"Home sweet home..." Scorpius said sarcastically as he glanced around.
"Come on now, not all of us got to grow up in Malfoy Manor." Lex teased him.
Scorpius just rolled his eyes at Lex's comment. It certainly wasn't the first time his upbringing had been used against him.
"I'll take that room," Lex said, pointing to the room on the left.
"Well, is that it then? Just going to bed?" Scorpius asked.
Lex sighed. "I'm tired and I'm nervous for tomorrow. It's been years since I've seen my father..."
"Well, he's not your father technically yet," Scorpius reminded her.
Lex cocked her eyebrow as if Scorpius had just said the dumbest thing, but then sighed, pulling her brown hair into a ponytail. "It's still nerve-racking. I mean...my last memory of him was him dead on the front lawn."
Scorpius was taken aback by Lex's bluntness. He remembered she had always been like that, Facts were simply facts to her sometimes. Any thought of teasing her further left his mind though once he looked closely at her. She seemed so sad, almost lost.
"I know it will be hard tomorrow, but if we are successful here, then you won't ever remember your dad that way because you will never lose him," Scorpius said.
Lex simply nodded. "Well, let's hope that's true and I don't somehow make this worse..."
Scorpius stepped forward and gently patted Lex on the shoulder. "You're going to be brilliant tomorrow, I know it."
Lex gave Scorpius a small smile, glad that he was that one who had come back with her and not Finn. She knew she wouldn't have felt comfort in Finn the way she did Scorpius right now.
Ron grumbled as Hermione's Muggle alarm clock rang in his ear, signaling it was time for him to get up for the day. He slammed the alarm off and rolled back over, snaking his hand around Hermione's waist.
"Ron...you have to be at work early," Hermione said, her eyes still closed.
"I want to stay with you though," Ron said.
"The weekend will be here soon enough," Hermione rolled over and rubbed her hand across his scruffy chin. "Make sure you shave."
"You don't like me with some stubble? Doesn't it make me look older?" Ron smirked.
"After the last few years, I don't think either of us need to add extra years on us, but I do actually like it. However, if Kingsley needs you there early, you should look presentable," Hermione said.
Ron gave a small smirk and then kissed Hermione before getting out of bed and getting quickly ready for work.
Hermione waited until she was certain Ron had flooed to work before she slowly got out of bed. She had been trying to hide it while Ron was getting ready but she was feeling rather nauseous, as she had the last few mornings which had prompted her to take the pregnancy test in the first place.
Hermione moved to the bathroom, trying to figure out if she was truly going to be sick, but after a few minutes she realized she in fact would be and quickly made her way to the toilet.
Once she was done tossing all of the contents of her stomach, Hermione sighed, leaning against the bathroom wall and slowly opening the cabinet under her sink. There she found the positive pregnancy test from the night before and pulled it out to examine it again.
She was pregnant. She couldn't believe it. Although they hadn't been extremely careful it wasn't like she and Ron were really trying to get pregnant. They were still very much enjoying the newly wed stage and both of them were extremely busy at work but Hermione was certain they would enjoy this next phase of life just as much. She knew Ron eventually wanted kids and she knew he was so good with his nieces and nephews so she was nearly certain he would be excited. Still, a small piece of her worried he would be less then thrilled to have to give up there newfound freedom as a married couple so quickly into the marriage.
As she thought about how she would tell Ron about the pregnancy she realized she wanted to be absolutely sure. The last thing she wanted to do was drop big, unexpected news on Ron if she didn't know it was absolutely true.
Once Hermione felt well enough to stand, she slowly got to her feet to get ready for her own work, deciding she would book a healer appointment for confirmation on her pregnancy for later that day.
Ron was surprised to see Harry waiting in the middle of the Atrium when he arrived at the Ministry.
"Did you get called in early too?" Ron asked, confused and a little concerned. He and Harry had been Auror partners since they started. He was worried that if they were both there, Kingsley had something serious to tell them.
Harry nodded. "Any idea why?"
Ron shook his head. "No clue. I'd imagine it's important, though, to get us here this bloody early."
Harry laughed a little. Now that he has James at home, nothing felt early. That toddler hardly slept.
"Funny?" Ron was confused.
"Just wait until you and Hermione have kids. This won't feel early at all," Harry explained.
"Well, that's not going to happen for a while. Not even on my or Hermione's radar. I'd like a few more years of sleeping in." Ron said with a small smile, his concern easing just a little bit as to why he and Harry had been asked to come in early.
"Ginny and I said that too..." Harry said.
"Yeah, but I am married to Hermione. She doesn't do anything without a plan. She even plans out what socks she will wear the night before. I'll have plenty of time to get ready for a baby when we get there." Ron said.
"That's probably true. I'm sure she already has a timeline for you," Harry said as he began moving toward Kingsley's office with Ron in tow.
Lex paced the small corner of Kingsley's office nervously while Kingsley sat at his desk filling out some papers and Scorpius sat across from Kingsley, half asleep. She and Scorpius had gotten to the Ministry early that morning, and she knew that sometime in the next few minutes, she would be face to face with her father again. The father she never thought she would see.
"Why don't you take a seat? You're driving me mental," Scorpius said, pushing his blonde hair out of his eyes.
"I can't. I'm too nervous. Remind me of the plan again..." Lex asked as she made sure her jacket was pulled to cover her Mudblood tattoo that she was certain her father would recognize as her mother's scar. She knew, this was one of her personality traits that everyone told her she got from her mother. When she was nervous, she wanted a plan meticulously laid out.
Kingsley stopped doing his paperwork and gave Lex a small smile. "Well, I have Hermione's schedule from her assistant, so we can keep an eye on her for now..."
A knock on the door interrupted Kingsley, and all eyes turned toward the door as it slowly opened to reveal Ron and Harry standing on the other side.
Lex felt as if all the wind had been knocked clear out of her. Her father, although a much younger and more physically fit version than the one she remembered, was standing in front of her. She had not realized how much she had truly missed him until that exact moment. It took every fiber of her being not to run up and hug him. She had missed him so much.
As Lex continued to stair at her father, he awkwardly cleared his throat and looked at Kingsley, forcing Lex to realize she had probably made him slightly uncomfortable. She quickly looked away.
"Weasley! Potter! Good to see you both," Kingsley stood and smiled.
"Uh...thanks, Sir," Harry said, eyeing Lex and Scorpius up with a little suspicion.
"Probably confused as to why I brought you both down here so early," Kingsley assumed.
"A little bit. We thought something was wrong," Ron admitted, his eyes never leaving Lex. There was something unsettlingly familiar about her face that he couldn't pinpoint. Something about her nose was so familiar to him.
"No, not wrong per se. You see, we had two new Auror transfers from our New York office," Kingsley pointed to Lex and Scorpius. "This is Lex and Scorpius."
"No last names?" Ron immediately picked up.
"We...don't use our last names in the states...helps keep our lives private," Lex said, quickly covering for not using her real last name.
"You don't sound American...completely," Harry commented.
"I've lived there a bit...it's a blend really but originally from London." Lex said, which actually was true.
"Completely from London," Scorpius admitted, his English accent much more recognizable.
"Well, welcome home..." Harry said simply, looking to Kingsley for more of an explanation as to why they were all there.
"Well, since they are both new here, I wanted to get them trained up with you two. Thought it would make the transition smoother." Kingsley explained.
Ron and Harry looked at each other, neither happy with this development. They liked being partners. After years of fighting next to one another, it felt safer to stay that way. They knew each other through their strengths and weaknesses. They didn't want to have to learn that about another person.
"Ron I thought Lex could go with you, and Harry could work with Scorpius?" Kingsley continued.
"Doesn't really sound like you are asking." Ron mumbled.
"I'm not, Weasley," Kingsley said before straightening up in his seat and continuing. "There is something else. The ministry has been made aware of a prophecy that has to do with a blood curse. We don't have many details but I was hoping you and Scorpius could go down to the Department of Mysteries to start looking for it. I don't have a name attached but it would be a specific color red... or maroon."
"That sounds like I'm looking for a needle in a haystack, sir," Harry said.
"You are so I suggest you two go get started," Kingsley said.
"Alright. I guess we get started then," Harry motioned for Scorpius to follow him.
"Right." Scorpius nodded, knowing he was secretly looking for a prophecy tied to either Hermione or Rose as he followed Harry out the door.
Suddenly, the room got uncomfortable as silence filled the gap between Ron and Lex. Ron shifted in place as Lex tried her best not to stare at him. She just wanted to reach out and touch him. She couldn't believe her dad was alive again.
"Now, as for you two...there's been a big uptick in death eater attacks and threats. I'd like you to run a detail through Diagon Alley and the surrounding areas. Anyone who was a former war hero...who may be a target of an attack, I would like a thorough report on updated addressed and if anyone has seen anything concerning."
"Are you worried about something? Should I let Hermione know?" Ron was suddenly very concerned.
"I don't want to upset anyone yet, just data points really but I don't think it would be bad for you or Hermione to take extra precautions right now." Kingsley said.
Ron just nodded, his brow furrowed, deep in thought.
"We...we can go check on her if you would like," Lex said, weirdly wanting to see her mother in this world too. The version of Hermione she had grown accustomed to was so far off from the mother who raised her until she was a teen. She was eager for the younger version of Hermione; the fierce, smart, loyal and loving version, not the shadow she left screaming frantically in the future hospital room days earlier.
"Appreciate that. I know she's in some meetings today which means she has a security detail but depending on what we find I may want a bigger detail," Ron spoke more to Kingsley.
"Of course," Kingsley nodded without disagreement.
Lex could see now how Ron had been able to stop the first attack if he was this protective of Hermione now. She always remembered her father being vigilant but this was almost a different level than she could recall. It made her confident that she would be able to identify and stop the attack on her family and potentially save them all.
