Chapter 20

It took a few minutes for the shock of Lex being taken for anyone to react, but when they did, they all seemed to at once.

"What do we do?" Scorpius asked desperately.

"We have to go after her." Ron said fiercely, mostly looking at Harry. "If they are taking her just for blood she may not have long."

"Agreed," Harry nodded.

"Why?" Hermione managed out, standing and staring with accusing eyes at Ron. "You said the prophecy was about our child's blood...why would they want her blood?"

"Hermione, it's complicated-" Ron started, realizing they didn't have time for the row he knew was coming. Lex was in danger and she didn't have her wand. She had no way to protect herself.

"Or is it your baby's blood, Ron? Does she have some of that too?!" Hermione pointed to the place Lex had been only moments earlier. Had Ron betrayed her in the ultimate way? It would explain why he had been uneasy at first with her pregnancy and why he had been spending so much time having hushed conversations with Lex.

Ron blinked twice, first wondering when Hermione had figured out Lex was their daughter but then quickly realizing she had not - that she in fact was accusing him of having an affair with Lex instead. The idea was so ridiculous and disturbing that he wanted to laugh and throw up at the same time. However, knowing Hermione had no idea what she had really just accused him of he simply stared at her.

Scorpius, however couldn't hide his laughter at the ridiculous notion, and under pressure laughter was a way for him to cope. Once he started he couldn't stop.

Hermione turned a sharp eye on Scorpius, her own blood starting to boil now. Did they all know? Was she the butt of this horrible joke?

"You find this funny, do you?" Hermione glared at Scorpius.

Scorpius straightened up as he looked at Hermione. He had seen that look before. It was one Rose had inherited from her mother and he had been on the receiving end of it after a few fights in their teenage years. "No...not funny..."

"Hermione, look, we can row about this all day after we save Lex but right now we need to do that. I need you to trust me on this," Ron grabbed her hands roughly and she could feel the panic coming off of him.

She stared at him for a long moment.

"Please trust me," Ron was almost begging but his voice was stern.

"Trust him, Hermione," Harry chimed in. "It's not what you think."

Harry's words seemed to calm Hermione a bit and she realized, regardless of what was happening, Lex had kept her safe when she needed to, and she wouldn't want something bad to happen to Lex so finally she nodded at Ron.

"Alright...we need to get to Kingsley," Ron said, never letting go of Hermione's hand as he is the group to Floo to the Ministry.

Lex fought against her restrains as a bag was thrown over her head once they apparated. She swore, the brief view she had gotten of where ever she was was a place she had seen before but couldn't recall where exactly.

"Stop fighting us...you're making it harder on yourself," Cormac's voice rang in Lex's ear.

His voice only caused her to struggle more as she felt the rope on her wrists cut into her skin and when she refused to walk forward, her gut was met with a swift fist, causing her to double over and two of her captors pick her clear off the ground by her arms, dragging her forward for a few minutes before Lex heard the sound of locks and metal on metal and then. Suddenly, she felt herself flying through the air and her face connected with a hard, concrete surface.

Instantly, she felt blood rushing from her cheek inside the bag her head was in. She knew, being unable to break her fall, she must have split open her cheekbone.

Lex grunted again and then the bag was off her head and she found herself face to face with her six captors, all still in masks except Cormac.

She glanced around and could see she was in some sort of a holding cell. It was dark and damp and there were no windows. She assumed they were under ground.

"Now...we are going to take those off your wrists..." Cormac pointed to her restraints and before Lex could even react she was being dragged toward the door, her restraints cut, and then the door to the cell quickly locked, leaving her behind bars as her captors moved out of the hall, finally leaving Lex face to face with only Cormac and one masked figure.

"What do you want?" Lex asked through gritted teeth as she felt the blood from her cheek enter the corner of her mouth.

"You know what I want, Weasley...and I'll get it in time. For now...get comfortable," Cormac told her.

Lex practically growled, grabbing at the bars between Cormac and herself. There was an anger in her now that she couldn't explain. She wanted to kill Cormac and anyone else who stood between her and her own escape. He knew who she was which meant he was going to use her, or rather her blood, to figure out the prophecy.

"Calm down," Cormac told her and then he nodded to the masked figure behind him and the two left Lex alone in the cell.

Lex yanked at the bars in frustration, trying to figure out a way to break out before anyone came back for her.

"Relax...they aren't going to come back for you tonight and there isn't anyway to break those bars," a familiar voice came from the dark corner of the cell.

Lex turned in shock. She had not noticed him before. She squinted, unsure if she was seeing correctly as the figure the voice belonged to moved into the dim light from a few torches in the corridor.

"Kingsley?" Lex was shocked.

But it wasn't Kingsley, at least not how she remembered him. This Kingsley looked stronger, less weathered, his face not as hardened and his eyes not as dull as the Kingsley from her time, or even from when she first met him in the time period. Something seemed different. This Kingsley was younger.

Ron, Hermione, Harry, and Scorpius sprinted through the Ministry. It was later known that the evening and the Ministry was almost empty. They hoped Kingsley was still there.

Harry led the group as Ron kept a tight grip on Hermione's hand, not letting her go for a second.

As Harry rounded a corner near Kingsley's office he abruptly stopped, causing Scorpius to run directly into him and Ron and Hermione nearly colliding with him as well.

"What in the bleeding-" Ron started but stopped when he saw Harry put a finger to his lips, indicating Ron should be quiet. He then pointed around the corner.

Ron, Hermione, and Scorpius followed Harry's finger and saw that Cormac and Kingsley were speaking in an animated fashion. They then glanced around and Kingsley motioned Cormac into his office.

"What the hell..." Ron could feel the anger rising in his chest as he saw Kingsley with Cormac.

"They're working together," Harry concluded very matter-of-factly.

"But...I don't understand...Kingsley knew who Lex was..." Scorpius seemed at a loss, his voice weak and low.

"Well, I'm going to bloody find out," Ron said, letting go of Hermione and charging across the atrium toward Kingsley's office, his wand drawn as his broad shoulders heaved with every breath. He was so angry he couldn't see straight. All he could think about was his daughter being taken, and Hermione being attacked. All he could think about was the future Lex had told him about and how it was all being risked now. He would do whatever it took to get Lex back safe and figure out what that prophecy was truly about.

Hermione watched in shock as Ron stormed away from her. She hesitated but did not follow, realizing that even though she did not understand what was happening, Ron was lost in his own thoughts, and whatever Lex meant to him it was far more then she could imagine.

"Damn it...come on," Harry reacted to Ron's movement and quickly followed after, motioning for Hermione and Scorpius to follow him, all of their wands drawn.

"KINGSLEY!!" Ron shouted from somewhere deep in his chest. "KINGSLEY!!"

Kingsley's emerged from his office with Cormac behind him. The pair swiftly met the group moving toward them though neither Kingsley nor Cormac took out their wands.

"Weasley..." Kingsley said calmly.

"Where is she?" Ron roared, his wand directly pointing at Kingsley's face.

"Who?" Kingsley asked.

"You bloody well know who. Where is Lex?" Ron felt his jaw clench.

Kingsley looked to Cormac and then looked back at the group.

"You have to trust us..." Cormac started.

"Shut up!" Scorpius pointed his own wand at Cormac.

"You're working together...we trusted you," Ron accused.

"Then trust that what we were doing is for the greater good here," Kingsley said simply.

Harry now trained his wand on Kingsley to back on up. "Where is Lex?"

"Somewhere safe until we get her blood," Cormac said with no emotion in his voice at all.

That was enough for Ron and he blasted a spell off, knocking if Cormac off his feet and straight back into Kingsley's office, knocking him out.

"Oh bloody hell, Ron..." Harry grumbled at Ron knowing now they needed to attack Kingsley as well, so he shot off a spell or two at Kingsley to knock him back as well.

Harry and Ron stood there in disbelief for a brief moment before Hermione broke their train of thought.

"Well lovely...you just attacked the Ministry of Magic so we should probably go," Hermione said with an air of annoyance in her voice.

"Right..." Ron agreed and then quickly took Hermione by the hand, leading the group away from Kingsley's office, trying to get out of the Ministry before Cormac or Kingsley woke back up.

"We need a plan! We need to find Lex!" Scorpius said as Ron and Harry led the group toward a secret exit the Auror's had for their own personal use.

"Yeah but we aren't likely to come up with one right now. We need to get out of here...we don't even know where Lex is..." Harry said.

When the group got to the end of the hallway they slowed down. Because it was a private exit for the Aurors they had to be careful of Hermione and Scorpius using it and had to put a few charms on it.

While Harry went to work, Ron stood guard, wand drawn to make sure no one was coming. Of course, it took all of five seconds for footsteps to appear.

Ron wiped his wand in the direction of the footsteps and to his surprise, found Draco Malfoy in front of him.

"Malfoy..." Ron narrowed his eyes at the Slytherin, his wand still raised.

"They took her below," Draco said quietly and rushed.

"Who?" Scorpius moved forward.

"The girl you are looking for...it had to have been her...I saw them bring someone in with a bag on their head...they took her below...to the chambers...I was just leaving my office for the evening, don't think they knew I was here..." Draco said, looking over his shoulder nervously.

Ron glanced back at Harry. They both knew what Draco was talking about. Below the Auror's office was a series of tunnels that had holding cells for those who had been taken into custody while they awaited trial. Few knew about the cells unless you were an Auror or lawyer, or you had seen family down there, which Draco has visited his father down there over the years for numerous things.

"Why are you helping us?" Ron asked.

"I told you...Astoria said I needed to pay you all back...I'd say I've done my part now," Draco said.

Scorpius was the first to move, putting a hand on his future father's shoulder. There was still some redeemable qualities there, though Scorpius knew now it was because of his mother's influence. "Thank you."

Draco nodded and then was gone as quickly as he had appeared.

"We need to get down there," Ron said quickly.

"We can't bring Hermione down there...it's too dangerous," Harry said.

Ron felt like he had been slapped in the face. In all of the chaos he had forgotten about Hermione. He was ashamed of himself, unable to believe he had gotten to crazy over Lex being taken that he had risked Hermione and Rose's lives more than once.

"I'm not leaving," Hermione said quickly and sternly. "I have no clue what's going on but I'm not leaving."

"We should leave and come back later. We need a plan anyway. Those cells are usually heavily armed." Harry reminded Ron.

"What if we don't have time? What if they do something to her tonight?" Ron said.

Harry shook his head. "Kingsley and Cormac are knocked out fairly good...I don't see them don't anything in the next hour or so. We just need to regroup, otherwise we are useless to her even if we get down there."

Ron debated what Harry was saying but knew Harry was right. There was no way they could go down there unprepared and help Lex.

"Alright...let's get out of here," Ron said, taking Hermione's hand again and moving to lead the group back to their home.

Hermione's head was spinning, trying to keep up with what was going on. She needed answers and she needed them quickly but no one seemed willing to give them to her, wiping her around as if she hardly mattered. She hated thinking Ron had been unfaithful, but her thoughts logically went there. If they took Lex for her blood the prophecy could be about any Weasley baby.

As Ron continued to pull Hermione forward her free hand slipped to her growing stomach. If Ron had betrayed her, she had no idea how, but she knew she had to make a commitment to her child to keep them out of harms way no matter the cost.

Lex studied the Kingsley she was sharing a cell with. The more she looked at him, the more she realized he was much more youthful looking then she had ever seen Kingsley before. Even in the dim light and with her one eye swelling shut, she knew this was not the Kingsley she knew from the future or the one she had worked with now.

"You can't be Kingsley...you look so young," Lex finally said to him.

Kingsley smirked a bit. "Well I assure you I am...but who are you?"

Lex's brow furrowed in confusion. How could he not know who she was. "I'm Alexis Weasley...Kingsley, you know me..."

Kingsley studied her face for a long moment. "A Weasley without red hair?"

Lex nodded slowly, worried something had happened to Kingsley and desperately trying to restore his memory. "I take after my mother. You know...Hermione?"

Kingsley shook his head and then his facial expression changed as if something had dawned on him. "It's you...you're who the prophecy is about...but how did you get here?"

"What? I can from the future. You gave me a time turner.," Lex told him.

Kingsley shook his head, suddenly growing excited. "No...I didn't. I've been locked down here for months...ever since I told Cormac the prophecy he thought Lucius had told him about Hermione's blood curse wasn't something I was going to pursue..."

"What? No...I just saw you today..." Lex told him.

"Maybe you did...if you used a time turner like you said...but whoever you saw they don't belong here. I'm the Kingsley from this time..." He said to her.

Suddenly, Lex was putting the pieces together. It was why this Kingsley looked so young and why when she arrived originally she was surprised that the Kingsley that greeted her looked so similar to the one from her time. It was because he was. He must have returned to this time too.

"You said you've been here for a while...because you wouldn't look into the prophecy?" Lex asked.

Kingsley shook his head. "Anything Lucius would say holds no merit to me."

"Well, I think it might in the future...because I have been talking to a Kingsley here...I'd assume a future version of you...and he wants that prophecy figured out." She explained.

Kingsley took a deep breath and then nodded.

Lex wanted to ask more questions, to figure out what was truly going on, but before she could footsteps could be heard coming toward the cell.

In an instant the Cruciatus Curse was shot off by one of two masked figures in front of the cell opening and Lex was on her back, reeling in pain.

As she lay twitching on the floor the two figures dragged her from the cell and into a larger room with a single chair in the middle of it.

Lex was in a daze as she was tied to the chair. Her face still bleeding and her head not throbbing from the curse. She could barely see straight as she tried to take the room in. It was much brighter than the cell she had just left.

As Lex focused she found herself starring at Cormac, the version of Kingsley she recognized and three masked figures.

"You...you came back with us...you lied to Scorpius and I!" Lex nearly growled at Kingsley.

"I knew it would only be a matter of time before you sorted that out," Kingsley said, though his voice held no emotion. "I am sorry about this, Lex. It's never what I wanted."

Lex furrowed her brow at Kingsley, about to say something but suddenly Cormac's fist connected with the cheek that was already bleeding, splitting it open even more.

"Cormac..." Kingsley warned.

"That's for your bloody parents attacking me," Cormac told her.

Lex was confused by his comment but didn't have time to ask as she tried to focus on Kingsley who was now holding something up in front of her.

It was the prophecy. He held it high, a glove covering his hand that it was in. Lex felt her stomach drop, if he had that and her blood could work to activate it, and suddenly Lex didn't think that figuring the prophecy out would actually help save her family. It didn't seem like that was Kingsley's intentions at all.

"That prophecy won't save my family...will it?" Lex asked.

"Oh no...we believe it will. You see...while we do think the curse resides in Hermione's blood we now have reason to believe the prophecy is about you, not your mother and not your sister." Kingsley said.

"What?" Lex was extra confused now.

"What indeed... we were never able to figure it out in the future because it had been destroyed by the time you were born. We have our theories of what it says but...we needed to find out for ourselves...so we needed to come back here to get it..." Kingsley said.

"And you needed me to come back so you would have my blood..." Lex realized.

Kingsley seemed solemn in his expression. "If we thought there had been another way, Lex...I would have taken it. I didn't want to harm you but this is the only way to figure out the prophecy...the only way to save your family," Kingsley said.

Lex's mind raced, trying to put together what Kingsley was saying to her. None of it was making sense, and all she was gathering is they were going to use her to understand the prophecy.

"We need your blood for this...we suppose most of it...but we also need to make sure we have buy in from others that this is the right thing to do. If we are going to take a life to save a life it has to be a group decision," Kingsley explained.

"What group?" Lex shook her head as in sounded insane to let a group of people decide if she died for a prophecy they didn't even know was definitely about her.

"Those of us in the Ministry...who handle these things. We need to protect our community from harm...no matter the cost," Kingsley said.

"And you think I'm harmful?" Lex asked, suddenly feeling dizzy again as the blood from her cheek dripped down into her mouth, the taste of rust filling her senses.

"We think that prophecy is..." Cormac said.

Lex closed her eyes, trying to make sense of what she was hearing and also trying to stop the room from spinning.

"Take her back to her cell for now..." Kingsley ordered.

Lex felt a pair of hands on her as she was dragged back to her cell and tossed back in. The masked figure then hesitated and Lex tried to focus on them before they slowly took their mask off.

It was Finn. Finn was staring back at her from under the mask.

Lex tried to focus on his face but then the room went black.
