Chapter 6
Mom and Madeline's relationships tanked while mine flourished. Mom and Mr. Hawkins broke up cause she ended up being four months. I couldn't help but laugh. You didn't even have my back when he accused me of plagiarizing my midterms twice. She was seven weeks when her and Mr. Hawkins started to be intimate. That was information that I did not need to know.
Madeline finally told Mom the truth that she was pregnant by Austin. He's the drummer for Panick Aura. That was surprising. Every single time she visited him, her lie was Michelle's house. I don't know who that is. It turns out that he goes to school with us. Both share science together.
She told mom that the break-up between her and Bibby was horrible. I looked confused and stupid over the fact that you was clearly dating Austin behind Bibby's back. You was cheating on him. You followed behind Austin's rock band. You and Austin was dating five months when you decided to be intimate. You two are clearly in love.
My family's personal problems are their own. I'm not ever going to carry nobody's weight but my own. Chance paying for our dates inspired me to get a job down in Forks. I work at Hershel's Eatery which is a diner that's two blocks from the library. All of it is in Forks' shopping district. I take the bus.
I feel happy this year because I had my own paychecks to start buying gifts. I'm sitting on the floor under the coffee table writing my Christmas list of who I have left to shop for while I play with my hair. I'm thinking about cutting it. My hair has taken quite growth. I'm thinking it's that new shampoo. The front door opens up allowing a cold air to drift in. I frown watching to see Mr. Hawkins. I zoom to the keys that's in the doorknob. That one key looks identical to the house key. Mom walks down the stairs. Madeline is not too far behind her.
He has a key to the house! What the hell am I missing? What am I missing? "What you doing here?" Madeline asks walking down the stairs. "To visit. Chose to visit." Ring! Ring! My phone rings and I answer it. "Hello." "How you feeling?" Jacob asks. "Horrible. Slightly fine though." "Why don't you come over? Hangout." Really? Over the last few weeks, Jacob has been growing a friendship with me.
"I'll love to." We hang up. I get up and turn to see the two pregnant women watching me. "Where are you going?" Mom asks. "Jacob wants me over. With me not being pregnant, I'm much more attractive." I gather myself and head up the stairs. Madeline blocks me. "What? Move!" "You and Jacob are dating." "You're just jealous. There is nothing wrong with my womb." I force myself pass her.
(Jacob's House)
Seated on Jacob's living room couch, I'm wondering why I came over today. Then, I think back to Jacob inviting me. He did not mention his two best friends be here. I didn't even hear Embry and Quil in the background. Jacob opens his fridge and takes out a pitcher of orange juice. "You ever want sex with someone, and the person turns you down?" I blurt out.
"Are you talking about Jacob?" Embry asks. "I am. I like Jacob. You like Jacob?" "He's cool. He's not me." "I figured. I imagine him to be thic-" "Can you stop talking about me? Not too far from the conversation." He's right about that. The living room is highly close to the kitchen. At least two feet. He walks over and hand me the glass of OJ. I need it.
I swear something is wrong with my health. Simply waiting, right? Am I gonna die or am I gonna die? It's one or the other. I drink. "How's your sister doing? Bibby is still in that funk." "Certain people cannot be saved. I don't pay Madeline no mind. Plus, she's into witchcraft. Have me sleeping with a knife under my pillow." "Are you serious?" "A little bit. She's the wild twin. Hopefully, this kid slows her down." I ain't tell mom that she got an abortion. I found the doctor's note when I was rummaging in her room. I finish my drink and sit it on the table.
"So, what you think about a date?" I ask Jacob. "I don't date." "The last date was three months ago." Quil says. "Who was it? Was it me?" "Bella." "Chief Swan's daughter. She's pretty hot. Small like a bird. Pale. White. Is her kind welcomed?" "God." Jacob says getting up in disbelief. He walks off to his room. I slide down the couch to his friends. "He likes me?" "Absolutely not." Embry says. I think he does. He's just hiding it. After a few minutes, he comes back out and we watch TV.
Besides them eating out of the fridge, growing boys are growing boys. Yet, all it took was a howl in the distance to send them running. Did I leave? Nope. I laid on the couch. I yawn hearing the wind blow outside. The front door opens, and Paul walks in. "Jacob left. Billy is working." He goes for the fridge. Soon as he opens it, he slams it shut. "Yep. Cleaned it out." He leaves out the kitchen door. I get off the couch and follow.
"Don't I know you?" He keeps walking. I run and stand in his way. He stops. "Why have you been following me? You been doing it for the last two weeks." I reach into my pants pocket and take out a pen. I grab his left hand and write my number. I'm lying. He hasn't been following me. Paul is cute though. I lift up his shirt and giggle at his 6-pack abs.
Later That Night...
I'm seated on my bed brushing my hair. I cannot believe I write my phone number down on Paul's hand. What was I thinking? I rarely know him. All I heard was gossip about him. When you hear gossip, it is very hard to forget. Ring! Ring! I grab my phone and answer it. "Hello." "Hey. Calling to check on you. Paul mentioned you looked sick." Jacob says.
"Of waiting. You never came back." "I did. I seen you leaving and didn't stop you. Wanna make sure you're okay." "I am. Voice is pretty soothing. You're my cough medicine." "That's nice to hear. Drink a lot of fluid. See you tomorrow. How about Sue's dinner? I'll pick you up after school." "Okay!" I smile excitedly. We hang up. I was hoping that Paul would actually call. I don't know.
Knock! Knock! "Come in." The room door opens to mom. "Hey. Almost time for bed." "Brushing my hair." "Right. Who were you talking to?" Her smile tells me that I shouldn't tell the truth. Yet, she might've heard his name. Did I speak his name? "No one." "Jacob." "Yeah. Want me to meet him for lunch." "I see. Well, Jacob is nice." He is.
