Chapter 2

14 hours before it all went wrong…

I woke up in the middle of the night and looked at the clock. It was 2:30 am. I realized someone was talking. I turned around and saw Ponyboy thrashing around in his sleep, muttering to himself.

I crawled over and tried to shake him awake, but it wasn't working. He was startin' to get louder and I didn't want him to wake up the rest of the gang if they were here.

"No, come back! Don't leave me!" he whined.

"Pony, wake up. Wake up, it's just a dream…" I whispered, but it wasn't working.

"Stay, stay here! You can't go yet!" he talked as if he was awake, but his eyes were still shut tightly. I was wonderin' if I should get Darry when Pony said somethin' that made me freeze.

"Don't leave me, Johnny! I can't do this without you! I can't…" his voice trailed off.

I stepped back for a moment and swore I could see tears falling from both his and my eyes. I shook my head and went back over to him.

I didn't know what else to do, so I put both my arms around Pony and held on. He stopped tossin' and he woke up, shaking. I sat him up against the bed frame.

"Soda, I was having a nightmare… Johnny… He was there, but he didn't stay…" Pony said as he rocked back and forth, shaking.

I tried to comfort him the best I could. He kept shaking and shivering, but to be honest, I was kind of shaky too. I never would have expected a night terror like that. Part of me wondered if I should get Darry. I looked back at Pony.

His eyes were red and his face was stained in tears. He kept staring blankly at the wall as if Johnny was right there. His breathing was startin' to get faster and he was panicking, but I was too. One look at him told me that he needed more than just me, but when I got up, he grabbed my hand and held it tight. I sat back down.

"I'm gonna go get Darry, honey. I'll be right back," I told him in my most gentle and calming voice. Pony's eyes widened and he gripped my hand tighter.

"Don't leave me too," he said, looking at me with pleading eyes. He gasped for air and his breaths didn't slow down. I smiled weakly and figured I could take him to Darry's room. So I lifted him and carried him.

"Let's go get Darry, Pone. Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere…" I whispered. Pony gripped my back like it would kill him to let go and I felt him nod.

I reached his door and tried my best to knock with one head.

"Darry, you there?" I ask timidly. For the first few moments, there was no response. Then I heard footsteps and Darry opened the door.

"What's wrong?" he asked. I walked in and set Pony down on Darry's bed. Pony gripped my hand and I held him close, trying my best to quiet him down.

"He was having a night terror, and I can't get him to calm down." Darry sat on the other side of Ponyboy and put his arm around him.

Pony's breathing gets even faster and Darry notices it too.

"Breathe, Pony. Just breathe…" he said reassuringly, and Pony looked up at him and nodded. His breathing slowed down and he leaned into Darry with more tears falling.

After about a few minutes of us holding him as he cried, he eventually fell asleep. Darry let out a sigh of relief when Pony fell asleep. I lean back on Darry's bedframe and Darry joins me, though still holding Ponyboy tight.

"What was it about this time? Was it something really bad?" he asks, as Ponyboy stirs but calms down.

"It was something about Johnny. He was crying in his sleep and talking to someone, begging them to stay and not to leave him. Then he said Johnny's name," I explained.

Darry looked surprised but I kept staring ahead, feeling like if I met his eyes, I would start bawling. I didn't want to talk about this. I doubt Darry wanted to talk about this. And I knew for sure Ponyboy wouldn't talk about this. And yet here I was.

"Did he say Dally's name, too?" Darry asked, but I shook my head no.

Darry looked down at Pony and got up. Bringing him back to bed, I laid back down too and watched Darry walk away.

I held Ponyboy close and he shivered under my embrace though I could tell he wasn't cold. Although I wouldn't admit it, I was jealous that Ponyboy got to see Johnny in his sleep.

I'd give a lot to see Johnny or Dally one last time, but I knew deep down that that wasn't going to happen anytime soon.

So I closed my eyes again, hoping that I would see them and that I'd get to talk to them.
