Chapter 1: The Moon Child
"Surrounded by rows of deities in the Divine Court stood Selene, the Goddess of the Moon. Tried for colluding with demons, from which she birthed a lineage now cursed until disrepair, she was henceforth stripped of her divine station and cast out of the divine realm to walk among mortals until the inevitable end."
This story, whether founded in truth or not, was oddly comforting to me.
I know not where I heard it. Perhaps it was a memory of a time long gone? Or maybe it was recent? This story grounded me, giving me a sense that I had roots keeping me attached to reality when my mind wandered off into the air. I couldn't get a hold of myself without drawing upon some random visions that appeared in my mind. I feel like I should know many things, be aware of many things, and know where I belong. At least Selene knew where she belonged.
I should belong to someone. I belong somewhere. But where? All around me is a microcosm of a world that is almost alien in my eyes. I recognize the trees, and can recognize some smells, among other things. What stuck out to me was the atmosphere...
It truly felt different.
Looking up at the sky, I reeled under the burning gaze of a blinding sight. It was right there. It was in the sky, sitting on an unreachable throne and looking down on the world.
It was right there.
It was staring down at me with judgment in its eyes, seeing me as a waste of something I couldn't understand.
I felt hot as threatening waves of heat bombarded my body, and I became nauseous as the burning gaze overwhelmed me, afflicting my eyes with a sharp pain that dug into my brain. Tears gushed from my eyes, and I let out a soft whimper, collapsing to the ground and curling up into a ball to stave off the relentless rays that intended on keeping me pinned to the ground.
I felt hot, even hotter than before. My skin burned, and I pressed my head even harder against the dirt, smudging my dark purple hair against the soil. I whined, but when the heat got to a certain point, my tears evaporated, and my face was beet red.
I felt hot.
My lips opened, and my very breath made the nearby strands of grass coil and blacken, embers flaking off. I forced myself to my feet, but I experienced vertigo, and I stumbled face first into a tree. I planted my hand on it and pushed away, but not before my hand sank through the bark and set the tree ablaze.
Looking at the fire, my gaze became glazed.
Funnels of fire pierced the sky, burning up the clouds and eviscerating floating islands. The ocean boiled, and the starry sky cracked. Several aerial beasts loomed in the sky, one of them being red and wreathed in flames, and the other being a glistening golden beast. The third one was covered in white fur, had a foxlike snout, black lips, and nine undulating tails.
More vertigo made me sway in place, and I saw something else.
I found myself looking up at the sky, but my vision was blurred and tinted with red. My tongue was covered with swishing liquid that wasn't saliva, I tasted metal. My body was wracked with pain, and I numbly looked down at my body, witnessing the sight of charred flesh, lacerations, and stab marks on it.
I would have cried out, but I felt no pain.
Dark feet landed before me, and I craned my head up, beholding the sight of a young man with fiery hair and a solar tattoo on his muscular chest. He wore a vicious grin on his face, but it didn't reach his eyes.
"An abomination wrapped in a pretty package," I heard the man growl, and I tried to move away, but I couldn't.
Fire appeared in my eyes once more, and the heat naturally hit me first, slamming into me like a wall and-
"NO!" I lurched forward and howled, spewing a wall of blinding white flames across the surrounding area. The fire gushed throughout the forest, setting countless trees aflame and burning them into ashes. Upon snapping my jaws shut, I glared at the forest.
I once again envisioned the burning skies of that exotic world that I felt was important to my heart. That beautiful world burned under the might of malicious flames. The celestial sky, the boundless sea, floating islands, drifting clouds, and looming mountains... all could not escape the great firestorm.
This forest can burn, and I staggered away. My body was too hot, and I could no longer even sweat or feel tears. I collapsed to my feet, feeling my consciousness dip as the pounding and relentless rays of the blinding ball of light kept hitting my head.
My soul screamed at me.
Do not go down this path!
I flinched as this random suggestion appeared in my mind with authoritative force, and I whirled around, nearly knocking myself over in my haste, and swept my hand before me. The air around me went cold, the temperature dropped to low levels. A fierce gale tore through the forest, carrying with it a frigidness that made even the sweltering flames flinch in fright. The uncountable legion of grass swayed in tandem with the wind's direction, and the bark of the trees behind me, spared from the flames I unleashed, groaned as ice grew everywhere.
A breath was caught in my throat as the air became too cold to breathe in easily.
I coughed and hacked, releasing a spray of blood that painted the ground a dark red. I instinctively gulped, looking around with a growing sense of dread. Looking back, it was as if there was some phantom emotion clawing at my mind and heart, begging for my attention. I wanted to lash out at the world, watch it burn due to the maddening visions I had witnessed when my mind was elsewhere, but that was the wrong thing to do. The cold wind cooled my heart and soul, subduing the flames of anger and indignation.
"It's all gone..." I couldn't help but mutter between scabbed lips.
The forest ahead of me had been cleared of all the trees and vegetation that once existed. The flames had torn through hundreds of them, clearing a range of two hundred feet. The ground was blackened, covered in a charred shell. Ashes floated into the air, swept by gentle gales. The trees were charred husks. The ground was further disturbed by the ice that covered it. I gaped, seeing that the ice construct I created was large and heavy, making the ground sink. Fortunately, the ice would soon melt.
I looked at my hands, and they were slowly regaining a healthy color. I wiggled my digits, and I smiled faintly.
Magic, that was the word that appeared in my mind upon studying my work of 'art.' In a land where I am lost, left bereft of my origin and uncertain of my future, magic would be my best friend, and Selene would unwittingly be my guide as I envisioned her struggles. it would be prudent that I reestablish a conscious connection with it.
I looked around, and my stomach grumbled at me.
"Food..." I mumbled, and I was also thirsty.
There was another thing I realized.
My mind had been so restrained by a negative heart that I was unaware of my own body.
I looked down at myself, wincing at the unsightliness of my sweeping beige kimono. It was largely torn, and the brown rope that was originally there was gone. My sweeping sleeves were burned at the edges, and my dark purple pants were lacerated, and I could see dried blood inside the torn opening. I focused more, and gradually felt the damage.
When I moved my arms, my skin stung, feeling like it was biting itself. Pinches. I had been lacerated many times. I stretched my body and winced at the aching pain I felt in my torso, neck, arms, and legs. They were bruised. I also felt a severe spike of pain in my stomach, and when I peeled away my kimono, I saw a gnarly gash and a puncture wound there.
I got worried, and when my ears twitched when they caught onto the telltale sound of flies...
The image of corpses appeared in my mind, and I paled.
I looked harder at my gnarly wound and breathed a sigh of relief when I saw that it was cauterized. If it was still bleeding, it would have been infected, I knew that much at least.
I felt stuck, an impending sense of doom coming upon me. Since I had nothing, I would have to return to base instincts and behaviors to survive.
Without knowing it, my silver eyes gained a bestial shape.
It was by instinct that I dropped into a relaxed position and began meditating, as I believed this would be the fastest way for me to test my abilities. The more I know about myself, the better the decisions I could make. My mind was slowly ridded of excess thoughts, emotions, and visions, giving way for inner peace to manifest as the center. My senses heightened, becoming acute and sensitive to my surroundings and my own body.
This world was truly different, in a way.
I feel that the atmosphere is different, but within are energies that were familiar. These energies were multi-colored particles of light that existed in clumps full of millions of them. These clumps were also massive in number, and these particle clumps were organized neatly and followed random trajectories. They weren't stationary, they were always in motion. Each color of particle moved in a unique way and had a different purpose.
Blueish particles were cool and flexible, twirling and swirling in streams that carved through the forest, passing through all things. These particles frequented bodies of water. Fiery particles were hot, and the sun was a massive source of them, but so was my body. They warmed up the environment and counteracted the cold that the blue particles would generate. They moved through the air quicker than the blue ones. The green and yellow particles dwelled among the soil, the trees, and other types of vegetation, keeping them flourishing with life. Brownish particles were airy, moving like the wind. There were black particles, and they were in few numbers, but when they hovered within the range of my senses, my eyes snapped open.
Death, I can sense and smell death.
A low growl escaped from my throat.
I stood up, wincing since my body was in a poor physical state, and made may way toward where I detected the presence of death.
Another part of me commanded my hand to plug my nose as I pushed through bushes toward where the smell came from. I peered out into a riverbank and saw the corpse of a large herbivorous animal. It was quadrupedal, had hooves, tusks, and a stout and short body. Half of its body was missing, its interior hollowed out completely. Blood stained the soil nearby, and I could see large tracks going into the distance. My intuition told me that the predator wasn't far.
"This... this is where I heard the buzzing..." I realized, stepping out into sight and looking at the dead animal that had flies gorging on it and laying eggs within its carcass. Thinking about it, I was weird. I was staring at a rotten corpse with maggots wriggling around and flies buzzing about, but I was perfectly content with staring at the scene.
I felt tempted to let go of my nose, and when I did, I expected to be hit with a wall of rotten stench. I was indeed hit with the stench, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. It was easily bearable, and weirdly appetizing.
Another part of me howled in disgust at my thoughts. A rotten corpse is... appealing to me?
I felt a wave of distress claw at my heart, and I backed away from the corpse, not interested in entertaining the thought of consuming a rotting corpse.
What is wrong with me? My stomach growled, but I ignored it and expanded my senses. It got easier as I practiced. It was apparently as easy as walking, it was second nature. My ability to smell extended for quite a great distance, and numerous small creatures were detected. I also sensed for any magical presences near me, wondering if they were a threat or not.
"..." I halted, sensing that I was being watched. I hardened my heart and frowned, realizing that while my wounds had been cauterized, I still had the scent of blood. My ears twitched, catching the near indetectable sound of paws pushing into soil and carrying over to my direction. This creature was a predator, and it smelled the same as the one that killed the boar.
It was... underwhelming, in a sense. It didn't feel dangerous to me, but would my current state allow me to defeat this thing without suffering a loss?
Woosh!
In a burst of speed, the feline rushed over to me and pounced, swiping its razor-sharp claws through the air and baring its fangs. I turned around just in time to dodge the large predator's initial attack, and I winced as its claws grazed my shoulder, lacerating me. I caught the sight of bright brown fur as the feline shot by and landed further away from me. I stood still, locking it down with my eyes that were growing feral.
It looked back at me and growled; its eyes were equally feral. It flailed its tail in clear agitation and barred its teeth again, shrieking at me. I almost smiled despite the tense situation. It was big, much larger than me, but it had such a cute little roar-if it could even be called that.
As if sensing my disrespect, the feline's eyes reddened and it lunged again, closing the distance in the blink of an eye. I stepped forward and met its charged head-on, throwing my hand out by instinct and whacking it on the temple before its claws could latch onto my shoulders. It went rigid in the air, its mind scrambled, and its eyes dazed. With a groan, it fell to the ground.
I blinked at it, and then looked at my hand. I finally cracked a smile and looked down at the dazed cat. My eyes soon changed, and all I saw was fresh meat.
Blood splattered all over the forest floor as the big cat's skull was crushed under my foot.
I didn't hesitate to tear open the feline's body and begin eating.
In the back of my mind, someone was shrieking at me about not cleaning and cooking the cat first. I didn't care. I wanted to eat. I tore out its entrails and shoved them into my mouth, chewing on the muscles, organs, and more. The beast within me was ravenous, and if I wanted to survive, I had to grasp at anything I could and waste no time.
Ten minutes later, three-quarters of the thing was eaten, but I avoided its digestive organs, bowels, and other less palatable parts of its body. By now, my face was covered in blood and organ bits, and my clothes were stained as well. But I was satisfied and happy. Not only that, but I felt much stronger and had more energy to spare. Even the pounding rays of the sun weren't difficult to deal with anymore, merely annoying.
I looked at the corpse of the cat I killed in a fair dual and had a thought, should I use its bones as weapons, or do I even need them?
For some reason, I felt the urge to take possession of this corpse's skeleton. Since it was my first ever kill in this world, I should use its bones as tools to remember it by.
"Yes, that would be nice..." I grinned, but the blood, organ bits, and my abnormally sharp teeth probably made me looking horrifying.
Within ten minutes, I learned more about my magical arsenal and used some soft heat magic to burn off the rest of the corpse's flesh, leaving the skeleton largely void of blood and flesh. I tore the skeleton apart, grabbing the ribs and stripping them off the spinal cord. They were dull at the end, but I could sharpen it. I looked at the claws that were a few inches long. I had an idea on how to use them.
[3rd Person POV]
In the neighboring region far from where the girl had found herself, a large group of men in rugged clothing and tattered armor waded through a swamp. Their surroundings were dark due to the immense and high canopy that blocked out a large percentage of sunlight. The thick scent of mold, bark, and... dead bodies.
They moved as quietly as possible and scanned the area with stiff expressions.
"Why did it have to be here of all fucking places?" one of the men hissed quietly.
"The target of an elusive creature, these things are hard to deal with. The coin we'll all share will be worth the toiling," another man whispered back.
"Shh!" a man in the lead of the group of fifteen men hissed at them, making them fall silent. "We failed to corner this thing on too many different occasions. My patience is rearing to go up in flames at this rate and I'm not about to have this mission jeopardized because that thing could hear or smell our damn breath!"
All the men who were close enough to hear these words sweat dropped.
Crack...
A loud snap of something from afar roused the attention of the group, bringing their attention toward the left of them. On an uplifted bulge of earth where roots jutted through and sank into the swamp and a bulky tree sat alongside a ton of other ones, they saw a massive form moving behind them. They could hear its heavy footfalls and the low snarl it let out.
They felt chills.
"T-that's not what we're hunting, this thing will jeopardize our mission!" the leader of the group almost cried out.
"Lower yourselves into the swamp, we can't let that thing see us!" another man insisted without being too loud. Unfortunately, some of the men were a bit too lacking in self-control and ended up disturbing the swamps surface with enough force to make rippling waves gush out, resulting in a good splash that rang out in the silent swamp forest. It was already a risky location, and very few prey animals regardless of size frequented the area. As a result, it was very quiet.
The moving form halted suddenly, and the trees groaned as a great weight pressed against them, forcing them to bend over and snap. A tall and skinny tree was snapped at the base, and it toppled over before slamming into the swamp and causing a massive splash. One of the men got buried under it, and he frantically tried to get from under it. The other men failed to remain silent and tried to save their ally, but they were horrified when the trees in the distance were knocked down, revealing a massive creature with long, curved horns, gnarly lower teeth, and a mean expression.
It snorted and growled, drool dripping from its black lips as it reared up on its hind legs and charged into the swamp!
"AH!" most of the men cried out and slipped under the surface without hesitation, swimming through the murky water in all angles to distract the thing. Some men were indecisive, holding spears and swords in hand. Looking at their weapons, they felt like fighting back, but looking at the massive predatory bull surging toward them at high speed with the swamp water doing little to slow it down, they thought otherwise and retreated, but they hurled their spears at the thing.
The beast's eyes reddened as the weapons collided with its body. Most of them bounced off harmlessly, but some managed to grace its defense and pierce right through, enraging it due to the pain.
ROAR!
"N-NO, PLEASE! WE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO YOU!"
"W-WAS THIS A TRAP BY THAT THING! DID IT LURE US OUT HERE?!"
It was pure chaos in the marsh, the originally silent area now full of noise and activity. Numerous creatures appeared in the distance, crawling on trees, swooping over from the canopy, and moving along the ground. Almost all of them were either predatory or dangerous regardless.
The howls of the man quickly became shrieks of agony and terror as the rest of the forest lunged upon them.
It had been a couple hours since I ate and had my fill of thirst, so I took a dip in the river and cleaned my body of all the dirt, grime, and old blood that covered my skin. I scrubbed my face roughly, feeling a rash on my skin. I groaned and thought about casting a magical spell to get rid of it.
My hand glowed blue, emanating a tranquil aura as blue particles of ethernano gathered around it. I pressed my hand against my cheek, and I dipped my head as I felt my skin tingle. It felt... pleasant.
I absentmindedly gazed at the sky, finally realizing that the annoying rays of the sun had begun to fade. The sky was getting darker, the arrow of time doing its job to relieve me of this unjust discomfort. Towards the west of my location, I saw the sky gradually become fiery in hue, and on the east, I saw it getting bluer and bluer.
The sky seems interesting... I wondered and took stock of my surroundings. In the few hours since I found myself lost; I migrated a great distance. The winding forest that I ate in was long gone, and I was now standing below a towering cliff with a gushing river tearing through a rocky area. The forest line was hundreds of feet away, and there were small hills overlooking the canopy of the sea of trees. I stretched my body and began climbing, ignoring the aching pain on my body.
My magic could heal minor abrasions, but nothing big like lacerations, puncture wounds, or gashes for the time being. I scaled the steep cliff, digging my hands between rocky crevices and heaving myself up. It was easy to pull my own weight, it felt like a feather being carried by the wind. With a single yank, I threw myself several feet higher, and I kept doing this until I reached the precipice.
By now, the sky had gotten darker, and the fiery hues in the west intensified, becoming red. Looking back, the east was now dark blue, bordering on purple. In the growing absence of the annoying light rays, I felt like my mind was even clearer than before. My dark purple hair, now clean, began to glow as the sky darkened. I smiled, feeling a sense of security as the moon showed its beautiful face.
He turned my back to the setting sun and basked in the growing presence of luna.
As time passed, my silver eyes brightened considerably once the moon reached the sky and cast its luminous rays across the land. I could see a film of white light reflecting off the land ahead of me, and the light would soon hit my location, and I awaited with open arms and a giddy smile.
"Mom..." I suddenly muttered, and I blinked in confusion. Part of that confusion fell away when the moon's light reached the base of the cliff before rising and enveloping me, but I still felt a great sense of despair when I muttered that word. I looked to the moon again, and it was staring at me.
Instead of being suppressed under the relentless rays of the sun, the moon's light uplifted me and made my heart calm. My despair was wrapped in a silky bundle of warmth, and my tears trickled down my face. I sat down and simply stared at the beautiful sight, and visions appeared in my mind.
There was a little girl who looked exactly like her, just young. She wielded an oriental brush used for both calligraphy and painting.
The girl would trace a delicate arrangement of multi-colored lines to form the grand, majestic scene of three mythical beasts.
The one of the left was a Western dragon with abysmally dark purple scales, metallic spikes protruding from its body, and numerous lacerations. It was clearly a veteran in the art of battle.
The one on the right was feminine in build, with luxurious dark feathers covering its body. It was somewhat avian as well, possessing a long and curved beak like a raptor instead of a reptilian snout. Violet flames covered its body.
As for the one in the middle, it was massive. It had luxurious white fur, a foxlike face with black lips, and nine motionless tails looming behind. The other two creatures were bowing their heads in deference to it.
Standing with their backs turned toward these massive creatures were humans. One was a tall male with a wild dark hair styled into a ponytail. The hair was jagged and edged with a tinge of red, and his eyes were a blend of violet and red colors. Covering his no-doubt muscular build was a burgundy kimono with black hakama. That was all there was to his appearance aside from the katana that was sheathed on his waist, kept against his body by a white cloth that was tied into a knot.
The young woman standing in front of the black avian creature had long, curly blond hair with hot pink eyes that seemed kissed by dark purple flames. On her well-endowed and voluptuous body was a dark and intricately patterned yukata that hugged her nicely. On the fabric were red, purple, and even pink flames.
The figure in the middle was standing in front, and she had similar features to the woman on the right. She merely looked slightly older and more mature. Her blond hair was straight, her features were serene, and she wore a fur-lined yukata that covered most of her body aside from her perfect legs and eye-catching cleavage. Crowning her head was a hood with a crescent shaped adornment.
I saw that the girl (me?) was unsatisfied with her work, and I found it odd. It looked gorgeous, like a work of art one could scarcely find anywhere else. But... what basis did I have to make that reference? If this kind of work didn't move the heart of anyone, then it... moved mine.
I closed my eyes and allowed a wave of emotions to flood my entire being. Sadness, loss, happiness, bittersweetness. A whole host of emotions mixed together, and when I opened my eyes to meet the gaze of the moon that now hung in the sky, I felt like I had a path.
I had a path, and it had everything to do with the beautiful moon that gifted me this epiphany.
I stood up and smiled, gazing at the moon with moist and glistening eyes. Not only did the moon give me some form of clarity, but it also made my magic sublimate. I found that I had greater control over it. Waving my hand, the gushing river below suddenly slowed down as tendrils escaped from the body and rose into the air. The water tendrils reached my altitude, and I commanded them to reshape.
They formed myriad shapes; rocks, trees, animals, and even weapons that must have been drawn from a library of memories that I couldn't access consciously. I felt a rush of cold air, and I commanded the water to freeze, and it did. It turned into ice. I molded the ice, making it take the shape of weapons. A katana, a naginata, and a Yari. All were oriental weapons that I felt an intimate connection with.
I collapsed the ice, and the water splashed into the river that regained its gushing momentum.
"I think there's more in me than that..." I mumbled, but I was satisfied. The night would be as long as it could be, and I had all the time in the world to experiment under the appropriate time of day.
Note: This is merely a rewritten version of my other FT story that I deleted. That one was chaotic. This one will feature a First Person POV to better display her character and keep the narrative narrow and exploratory. She will be the only character with a First Person POV.
