"Phoebe's premonition showed the attack happening this evening, when you take your normal walk through the park." Xander said to Susan, after the group had hashed out the details of a simple trap. "That gives us time to go to the morgue and question the only witness to Kari's murder."

"What witness?" Susan asked. "The A.D.A never mentioned a witness."

"Because unless he knows I've been assigned to the case or knows about the supernatural, he wouldn't know there's a witness to her murder. You're welcome to come with, you shouldn't be alone right now anyway. And someone needs to officially identify Kari."

"Yeah, we're family. I-I guess I should. I need to make sure it's her, that someone hasn't made a mistake. I want it to be a mistake."

"I know." And Xander did know, they all did. When you're told someone you love is dead, you want the person telling you that to be wrong. They almost never are.

Once they arrived at the morgue the M.E. took them back to see Kari and Susan looked at what was left of her sister witch.

"It's her." Was all she said aloud, the pain in her voice and the tears in her eyes said everything else. "So, this witness -."

"I was told by your office what you're going to do." The M. E. said to Xander. "I'll take Miss Coleman to the cafeteria."

"Thank you." Xander nodded.

"No, I'm not going anywhere." Susan insisted. "I want to know what you're doing."

"Kari is the only witness to her murder." Xander answered. "I have to know what she knows."

"You're going to summon her spirit? I can do that, mediumship is a basic witch skill."

"No, I won't be summoning anything." Xander answered, Susan was an adult and deserved to know what he intended to do with her sister witch. "I'm a necromancer, I'm going to activate Kari's brain. Knowledge remains in the soft tissue of the brain matter for hours after death, it's how a vampire, an incorporeal demon, has knowledge of who the person was in life, because they can access it. So can I. That's why she offered to take you out of here. Kari's gone, her personality, her emotions, none of that's there. I'm the only necromancer of my kind, others can animate the dead and trap a soul in the body or turn a demon incorporeal so it can take over a dead body. I can't do those things and I wouldn't want to anyway. But I can animate her body enough so that she can answer questions. You don't need to see that, because it's not her anymore."

"How exactly are you going to do it? It won't damage her body will it?" Susan asked.

"You can watch, though I would prefer you didn't. It's disturbing, but I can't really explain how I do it, it's an instinctive magical ability."

"Why not just summon her spirit? Wouldn't that be easier?"

"Easier, yes. Far less detailed in information though. The brain stores more information than we can access, she'll be able to provide details this way that her spirit can't."

"I need to see it." Susan insisted. "I need to make sure you're not hurting or violating her in anyway."

"Okay, your concern is understandable." Xander nodded. "If you think I'm doing something wrong, we can stop."

"If it helps catch her killer -." Susan looked conflicted. She'd heard of necromancing, but she'd never heard of using it the way Xander was proposing. She needed to see it to understand. "Do it." She decided.

Xander carefully placed his hand on Kari's head and pulsed his power into her brain. Electrical signals activated her lungs and drew air across her vocal cords, her eyes though, stayed closed.

"She's breathing!" Susan exclaimed.

"No." Xander answered. "Her lungs are acting as a bellows, drawing air across her vocal cords, they're not pushing oxygen through her body. If the M.E. was to hook her up to machines, her heart wouldn't register and neither would brain activity. Magic is doing just enough to access and express information. Remember, her soul has moved on, she's an empty shell. You don't need to see this." Xander tried again, this was disturbing for him. For a family member? It was a nightmare.

"It better damn well be worth it." Susan said.

"It'll confirm if the demon from Phoebe's premonition actually killed her or something or someone else did. The demon from the premonition could be totally unrelated to what happened to Kari."

"You're right." Susan nodded. "Do what you need to."

Xander looked at the body and began the delicate process of controlling it. No, control wasn't the right word, commanding, that was closer. Still not quite accurate, but close.

"Why were you in the alley behind the Canon Theater?"

"Hunting a demon."

"What demon?"

"Unknown."

"What made you think there was a demon there?"

"Two girls talking in the theater mentioned seeing a man with black and red markings."

"You suspected a demon."

"Yes."

"Did you see the demon?"

"Yes."

"Describe the circumstances."

"He hissed witch from behind me. I turned around. Pain and than pain again."

"Describe the demon."

"Mostly black with red swirls, large body, very large muscles." She described the clothing and the pattern of the markings.

"Did you see anything else?"

"Human form."

"You saw the demon's human form?"

"Yes."

"Describe it."

"A male, about six inches shorter than the demon, white with brown eyes, five o'clock shadow, dimple in chin. Wearing a suit." She described the suit in detail.

Susan blinked and sucked in a breath as she realized that description was familiar.

"Rest now." Xander said and released the Magic. "What is it, Susan?"

"The description of the human sounds like the man who questioned me, right down to the dimple in the chin."

"The one who told you he was a District Attorney?"

"Yes."

"Very interesting, especially since he shouldn't have been questioning you in the first place."
