"Why shouldn't he have talked to me?" Susan asked.
"It's not his job. The soonest the District Attorney's Office should get involved might be while suspects are being interviewed by police and then it would just be as an observer. Plus, interviewing you alone is a big no-no, later you could claim harassment or coercion. Did he ask you about your plans for later today?"
Susan sucked in a breath. "Yes and I told him I normally take a walk in the park every evening, it relaxes me before bed. He had mentioned how routine can be soothing after getting upsetting news. You think he's the demon." She said flatly, controlling herself as she realized he could have killed her than and there. "If he is, why didn't he try to kill me then?"
"He may have a ritual way of killing." Xander suggested. "A way that would equate to a compulsion in a human, it doesn't feel satisfying unless done a specific way or he may just like playing games."
"With my life." Susan muttered. "And my sister witches."
"At the very least he's raised questions I need to find answers to." Xander turned to the silent Charmed Ones, who'd stayed nearby to offer support for Susan. Only Cordelia had had an understanding of what he was planning to do, given she'd seen it before. "Before, when you were hashing out a plan, Phoebe said she thinks the demon in her premonition is the same type as Belthazor, a demon who you've dealt with before." Which was all the explantation they'd given Susan, but Xander and Cordelia were already aware that Belthazor and Cole were roomies of a sort. "And this particular demon species requires a specific vanquishing potion that includes a piece of the demon, either flesh or blood. We know from Phoebe's premonition where he'll be in about an hour, the park. We need time to secure the scene and get any potential innocents out of the way before we can even try to spring a trap on him. Whether this Sykes guy is the demon's human form or not, we have to take the opportunity to deal with the demon and for that we need a piece of him."
"Than let's get to the park." Piper headed toward the car, finally something for them to do, up 'til now Xander had been doing all the work, but vanquishing this demon was their job. Once at the park Cordelia and Susan stayed in the car while Phoebe put on Susan's coat and stocking cap and waited while Xander checked the area around where Phoebe's premonition had shown the demon would approach Susan, now being replaced by Phoebe disguised as her. To his surprise, he found someone hiding in the bushes. But it wasn't a man claiming to be with the District Attorney's Office. It was a woman holding a knife.
Drawing his weapon, Xander identified himself and ordered her out of the bushes, wondering if the demon was watching and if the woman's presence would blow the trap. "Lay the knife on the ground, ma'am." He ordered.
"No, you don't understand." She tried to protest.
"You're hiding in the bushes with a weapon, ma'am. You're not planning to make friends with someone. Lay the knife on the ground and put your hands on top of your head."
"You're going to think I'm crazy."
"Right now I think you intend to hurt someone. Crazy is for doctors to decide, not me. My job includes keeping you from hurting someone. Last time I say it, ma'am, put the knife on the ground."
"I'm hunting a demon!"
Xander stopped. "Okay, you can explain yourself after you've disarmed, but you're not keeping that knife in your hand."
"It's called an athame actually."
"Ceremonial knife used for a variety of purposes. If we're after the same demon, ma'am, your athame won't do anything more than injure him, it's not enough to kill him."
"You know -?"
"About demons, Magic, yes."
"You're sure it won't work?" She seemed defeated, exhausted. "I've followed him for months, the witches he's killed. I thought I'd finally caught up to him and could finish it."
"If we are talking about the same demon, there's really only one way to do it and we don't have a lot of time. Give me the athame and allow me to secure you. We'll deal with the demon."
She set the athame on the ground and put her hands on her head, looking small and lost. "He killed my fiance, he was a witch." She told Xander. "I know he's killed witches here in San Francisco. I used a divining method I read about in Andrew's books to track the demon. He kills entire Covens and this witch who walks through this park every day is the last one in this Coven. I thought I'd finally gotten ahead of him and could finish it. You're sure the athame won't work? He used it to kill Andrew, my fiance."
"I'm sure. But we've got a plan to get what we need. Let's get out of the way and the witches will get what we need to finish it."
"Okay." A broken hitch of breath as the woman let Xander lead her away and Phoebe and Piper still managed to spring the trap and get what they needed to make the vanquishing potion.
