A/N: I always said Ch. 100 would be a certain event...well...have fun! :)
Though I guess I should warn for spoilers that will (eventually) see the light of day in the Red series if I ever get the writing juices for it.
The sword pierced right through her Thanagarian armor and directly into her sternum. Shayera hardly had a chance to register the pain before she was on the ground. At first she was in shock as she stared up at the sky. Shayera slowly breathed as her mind began to slowly comprehend what had just happened and what she just had done.
There were a group of bad guys, Emma had her back to one of them, and the bad guy had lunged right at her with a sword. The Thanagarian acted more so out of pure protective instinct than logic when she threw herself in the blade's path.
"NO!" She heard her daughter's voice scream behind her.
The hero in her still didn't want to give up though. There was still work to be done. If only she could pick herself up off the ground. The fight still wasn't over. A bitter and short laugh made its way past the Thanagarian's lips. The laughter gave way to some coughing, blood splattering out.
Shayera knew that she wasn't going to survive this injury, not this time. Moving was too painful, breathing was becoming too hard, and blood slipped from her lips as she coughed again. She was dying yet she didn't regret a thing. That blade was aimed directly at Emma and Shayera would never have let that happen. As unpleasant as the notion of dying sounded, she did not regret her decision. It was absolutely worth it to the Thanagarian. If she had to go back and do it all over again, Shayera knew she would make the same choice each and every time.
"Mom!" Emma's voice came through as though Shayera were under water and she really couldn't understand what else she was saying. It didn't help that the fight was still going on around them.
"Mom," Shayera could hear her daughter's voice break and she closed her eyes. She didn't want to see her daughter breakdown in front of her. Emma was still very much like her and didn't outwardly show her emotions when upset. She also didn't want to see the pain in her daughter's eyes. Shayera then felt two hands over the wound, applying pressure in vain. "Mom, you're going to be fine. Everything is going to be okay."
"Emma," Shayera softly murmured as she slowly opened her eyes, gently placing her hand on Emma's right forearm. The Blue Lantern immediately pulled her attention back to her mother. If she hadn't already been stabbed in the heart, the utterly destroyed look on her daughter's face would have been enough to kill Shayera at that very moment. "It's okay Emma." In spite of everything that was happening, Shayera still managed to lightly smile up at her daughter. "It wasn't your fault."
"You're going to be fine," she heard her daughter whimper as she broke down crying. "Mom please, I can fix this. This stupid ring. They said it could heal people."
"Emma you," Shayera slowly exhaled as her hand limply fell from Emma's arm. "You can't save...everyone."
"Mom!" The next thing Shayera knew Rex was kneeling over her and tightly gripping her hand. Even with the helmet on, Shayera could see the devastation on his face. If the tears weren't evident enough.
Shayera hated to hear or see either of her children like this. She hated that she was the cause of it all.
Shayera found it odd that there was very little pain in dying as her body began to go numb. Dying itself was the absence of pain she noticed. Shayera's last thoughts as shock gave way were of John. His death had absolutely gutted her and she could only hope the same wouldn't happen to Emma and Rex. Rationally, Shayera knew it would. It was already evident with both of them. Shayera knew this would especially hit Emma hard, even with how strained their relationship was when she was younger.
Now that they were actually getting along. Shayera humorously thought to herself. She could faintly hear Emma and Rex panicking over her. Emma cursing the Blue Lantern Ring for not working and not fixing the wound.
The last thing she felt, before her body went completely numb, was the pressure removed from the wound and then two arms wrap themselves tightly around her. She then heard Emma sobbing as she sputtered out, "I love you." Shayera couldn't remember the last time she had heard those words leave Emma's mouth. Probably when she was still a child.
The other thing Shayera found odd is that she thought she would have been more panicked about dying. She had always feared death and what awaited beyond it. Perhaps she had become too tired to worry anymore. Though she still wasn't happy about the fact that she was dying. She, like anyone else, still didn't want to die.
Shayera then felt a shiver run down her spine. She felt cold despite not being able to feel anything else around her. She then noticed the absolute silence that surrounded her.
She then thoughts drifted once more to Emma and Rex. She had made them both cry.
She wanted to go back. She needed to go back.
She wanted to make everything better. It was her job as their mother to make everything alright again.
She then fleetingly wondered if this was how John felt when he died. Did he worry about how this would effect everyone else? Was he as calm as she currently was? Did he panic? Did he know that he was dying or had it been instant? She just hoped he hadn't been in any pain when it happened.
"Shayera..."
Suddenly a voice pierced through the utter silence. Despite not hearing that baritone voice for nearly thirty-nine years, Shayera immediately recognized it and it made her feel at peace. Despite everything, Shayera found herself lightly smirking when she felt one hand rest itself on her upper arm as the other ran over her hair.
As she slowly opened her eyes, Shayera considered that perhaps dying wasn't going to be as bad as she thought after all.
N/A: Like I previously have said I'd make Shayera's death Ch. 100. Of course there'll be a longer chapter of Shayera's death that's not from Shayera's perspective (as I know this was shorter than normal but I can't see a dying person having a very long perspective of things) in Red and more so from Emma (yeah she's no longer a Red Lantern at that point but a Blue Lantern eventually so spoiler) and Rex's perspective. When? I don't know. When it be soon? Not at all. :)
