The battlefield was chaos. The large creatures, towering monstrosities with scales like thick armor and claws like sharpened daggers, were relentless. Each swing of their limbs sent the group reeling. The air was thick with the stench of sweat, blood, and the unmistakable scent of impending doom.
Yang's character, battered but far from defeated, gritted her teeth as she swung her massive hammer at one of the beasts, only for it to deflect with a deafening clang. "This thing is tough!" she shouted, dodging a swipe that narrowly missed her. "Any ideas?!"
Weiss, similarly out of breath, threw a defensive glyph in front of herself, blocking another of the beast's attacks. "We need to weaken it! Focus on the legs, slow it down!" she suggested, but even with their combined efforts, the monster was proving to be nearly impervious to their attacks.
Ruby, already dodging through the beast's swipes with Crescent Rose in hand, looked over at Blake's character, who had found an opening and was trying to get a clean shot. "I've got this! Let's finish this thing off!"
But the monsters seemed unyielding. Blake's character let out a frustrated growl, her claws scraping the ground as the beast lunged at her. "We're not even making a dent in these things!" she growled, but as she said it, the last of her health points drained.
"Blake!" Ruby shouted, but the cat faunus was already down, knocked unconscious by the beast's massive tail.
Yang and Weiss were the next to fall, their strength drained as the creatures' attacks overwhelmed them. Soon, only Jaune, Winter, and Penny's characters remained standing. Jaune glanced around at the battered remnants of his team, groaning as he frantically rolled behind his screen. "Okay, okay. This is… not going well."
Winter, looking cool and composed as always, narrowed her eyes, clutching her sword. "We can't give up. We have one shot left."
Penny, ever the optimist, smiled brightly, completely unfazed by the odds. "I know! I have just the thing!" She pulled out a glowing orb from her character's pouch, waving it around excitedly. "I'm going to use my most powerful buff: Kindness!"
Jaune blinked, not sure if he heard that right. "Did you just say kindness?"
Penny nodded confidently. "Yes! Kindness can heal, and it can change hearts! Maybe we don't need to defeat them with violence… Maybe we can stop them with the power of love and compassion!"
Winter raised an eyebrow. "Kindness… really?"
Jaune stared at Penny, dumbfounded, but shrugged. "Alright, alright. You've got a roll of the dice. Let's see if it works."
With an exaggerated flourish, Penny's character raised her hands high, glowing with warmth and light. "Oh mighty beasts, you have been driven by rage, but I offer you peace. You need not fight, for you can choose a better path, a path of peace and understanding."
There was an awkward pause around the table as the group watched Jaune set the scene. "I... I guess go ahead and roll the dice?"
Penny rolled the die with uncharacteristic seriousness. The dice clattered across the table and landed, the numbers spinning… and then it stopped.
Jaune blinked. "Uh… that's a 100?"
The table went silent.
Yang threw her hands up, looking genuinely irate. "ANOTHER HUNDO?! You've got to be kidding me! A freakin' 100?!"
Jaune sat back in his chair, a hand on his face, still in disbelief. "I did not expect this."
Ruby, her character already down for the count, weakly raised her head. "Is… is that really a thing now? Are we just rolling 100s every time?"
Jaune stared at Penny's glowing character. "I mean, I guess... it worked. So... here we go."
The beast, the same one that had been thrashing about and nearly wiping out the group, suddenly stopped mid-swing. Its angry, glowing eyes softened, as if understanding Penny's words. The creature's stance slackened, its massive form relaxing as it lowered its head and gave a soft, almost pained rumble.
"Wait… what the hell?!" Yang laughed in disbelief. "Did that thing… just listen to Penny?"
Jaune, still trying to wrap his head around what just happened, continued, "In return for your kindness, the creature lowers its massive form to the ground, head hung low in apparent submission. It looks at you, its eyes soft, almost… thankful. And in a deep, rumbling voice, it speaks."
The creature's voice was low and gravelly, like a storm on the horizon, but there was no malice in it now. "You have shown me kindness... I will show you mercy. Follow me."
Penny beamed, hands on her hips. "See? Kindness works!"
Jaune shook his head in awe, but continued, "The creature turns and begins walking, its heavy feet shaking the ground as it leads you deeper into the forest. But not to its cave. Instead, it guides you to a secluded mountain pass."
Winter raised an eyebrow. "What's this? Some sort of hidden treasure?"
Jaune grinned. "You bet. The beast leads you to a massive, hidden cave, completely untouched by time. Inside, you find a mountain of treasure—gold coins, shimmering jewels, weapons, armor—everything a team of adventurers could ask for. It's all there."
Yang's eyes widened as her character rushed forward. "Well, now this is more like it!" She started tossing gold coins into the air, laughing. "Look at this, guys! This is like our jackpot!"
Penny clapped excitedly, practically skipping through the treasure. "I knew kindness would work!"
Winter crossed her arms and smirked, her character standing stoically in the middle of the treasure pile. "I had a feeling Penny would bring something beneficial to the group. Maybe she's not so useless after all."
Yang shot Winter a glare, but then sighed. "Okay, okay. I take back everything I said. That 100 was totally worth it."
Jaune, feeling a bit of the tension ease up, started adjusting his notes for the next part. "Okay, okay! You've got the treasure now. But don't get too comfortable. We've still got a big quest ahead."
Suddenly, Jaune's eyes sparkled with a new idea. "Alright, everybody. Get ready for your next quest. You're about to go after the ultimate prize…"
The group leaned in, eager. "What is it?" Ruby asked.
Jaune grinned, full of mischief. "The Sword of 1000 Suns."
The table fell silent. Winter raised an eyebrow. "The Sword of 1000 Suns?"
"Yes, the legendary weapon," Jaune confirmed. "And it's going to take all of your combined strength to even find it. Let the search for this ultimate prize begin!"
As if on cue, the door to the room opened. A figure stepped into the room with a dramatic flourish, a cape swirling behind them. Everyone froze as they turned to see Sun Wukong, wearing sunglasses, a wide grin plastered on his face.
"DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN!" Sun shouted, striking a pose with all the confidence of someone who'd clearly seen one too many action movies.
Yang's character facepalmed. "Not you again…"
Ruby looked bewildered. "Sun, what are you doing here?"
Sun grinned, holding up a scroll with a flourish. "Oh, I'm here to join in on the fun, obviously. You can't go after the Sword of 1000 Suns without me, right?"
Jaune chuckled and adjusted his glasses. "Well, guess the quest just got a whole lot more interesting. Alright, let's get started!"
