-Chapter Thirty-One-

"Hey, Sanji, it's time to retreat" Usopp whispered.

"Sea pirates or no sea pirates, I say bring it on! If you want to take so much as a step in this village, you'll have to go through us!" Camu shouted as Luffy swiped the back of his hand across his lips, wiping away any spit or blood that had come drooling out after getting hit.

"Spoken like a true Rebel soldier, now I can go take care of Crocodile without worrying about this place!" Luffy laughed. "Whew! That's a relief—thanks!" he grinned.

"Shut your trap and come on!" Sanji snapped as we took off running, motioning for the captain to not say anymore. "Bastard! That's Rebel soldiers for ya!" he shouted back with a grin.

"I've never seen such a strong display of strength!" Usopp happily shouted.

"Truly we never even stood a chance!" I grinned.

"Whatever, I suck at scenarios like this one..." Zoro embarrassingly muttered, causing me to laugh.

"Hey, wait for me!" Chopper cried, hurriedly chasing after us. Loud cheers sounded out from behind, slowly growing fainter by the minute the further away we got and it wasn't long before we were reunited with Nami and Vivi. Reaching up, I yanked the bandana atop my head right off and shook my head, causing the stray strands of hair that had gotten loose from my updo to go flying.

"Hey, Luffy!" Ace shouted, running up alongside his brother.

"Oh! Hi, Ace" Luffy smiled.

"How long should we keep running?" the older of the two brothers asked.

"I don't know" Luffy shrugged.

"Surely we could drop the act now?" he questioned with a raised eyebrow

"The speed in which they turned over a new leaf was scary" Zoro commented.

"Really?" I hummed. "I thought it was quite touching how they wanted to change their ways" I smiled, pleased by just how genuine the men had been in their proclamations of wanting to be better protectors of the townspeople.

"Amazing" Ace breathed out, looking at his younger brother who was cheerfully laughing.

-Later-

"That cloud looks like a frog, don't you think?" I asked, my head tilted back as I peered up at the sky.

"I don't see it" Nami hummed from in front of me, her grip on Eyelash's rein slack as she glanced upward.

"You're not looking hard enough then—you see it, don't you, Vivi?" I asked, looking back at the princess seated behind me.

"I guess" Vivi weakly smiled with a shrug, not really agreeing nor disagreeing with me.

"You guys have no creativity" I softly huffed.

"No, I think you're just bored and seeing things" Nami snorted.

"What are you doing?!" Usopped suddenly shouted, ripping away the canteen of water in Luffy's grasp. "Stop spilling all the water, you slob!" he snapped.

"What's the big deal?" Luffy frowned. "Ace brought plenty of water for everybody" he argued, not understanding why he couldn't just chug the canteen of water in one go.

"Well, we still have to conserve all of our supplies! Stop hogging all the water to yourself!" the sharpshooter scolded.

"Why is it okay if Sanji does it?" Luffy frowned, quick to point out the supposed hypocrisy he was now seeing.

"This is for Nami so if she gets thirsty or dehydrated and cries out for water, I'll be there to rescue her" Sanji explained with a dreamy sigh. "Nami, Vivi, Skylar, you care for some refreshments?" he suddenly asked, eagerly holding up the canteen in his hands to us as he rushed up beside the camel.

"Hey, give me some of that!" Luffy demanded as he rushed the blond.

"No, thank you" Nami answered for the three of us.

"Let go!" Sanji growled, shoving Luffy and Usopp away as the two now started to gang up on him.

"Hey, you want some water?" Zoro asked, glancing back at the reindeer that was currently sprawled out in exhaustion on top of the makeshift sled the swordsman was pulling.

"No thank you...I'll be fine" he panted, shaking his head.

"Don't be shy, Chopper—drink some water if you need to, heat like this can be quite dangerous for animals" I called back to the reindeer, worried for his health as he tiredly groaned in response as if to let me know that he had heard.

"Hey, Vivi," Nami suddenly piped up, "can you tell us some more about this Rebel Army?" she asked, ignoring the three men that were currently fighting not that far behind us.

"Yeah" I nodded. "I'm rather curious about them as well—what's your connection with them?" I asked.

"Well, I should probably fill you in before we get there" Vivi hummed in thought. "It started eleven years ago…" she started as she began to recount to us her childhood and the children she had met—particularly, the young boy she had met.

"What a sweet story, Vivi" Nami awed the second the princess took a moment to breathe.

"Very adorable" I chirped out in agreement, unable to stop the smile that spread across my face.

"Luffy, stop it! You give me that water back right this minute!" Usopp angrily snapped as he, Sanji, and Luffy ran right past us—the rubber man's arms now held high above his head as he tried to keep the canteen away from the two.

"Just wait, I haven't gotten to the best part yet" Vivi smiled, ignoring the three as she eagerly dived straight back into her story about her adventures with the Sand Sand Band.

"Ah! What the heck is that?" Luffy suddenly shouted, unintentionally cutting the princess' storytelling off with a jolt as she startled at the captain's voice. "It looks like a tail" he guessed as examined the comically large scorpion's tail that jutted out from underneath the sand. "Don't be shy, come on out! It's huge!" he gaped after pulling on the tail which in return caused the giant scorpion it belonged to, to finally emerge out of the sand. Just the sight of the creature was enough to cause Usopp to scream in fright as the others were quick to attack it despite being the ones to provoke it first.

"Vivi, please continue telling your story—I'm getting hooked on your adventures with Koza" Nami pleaded, ignoring the men and the trouble they were now getting into in favor of hearing the rest of Vivi's tale.

"Yeah, I'm curious to know how it ends" I smiled, nodding in agreement as I urged the princess to continue.

"Alright" Vivi nodded. "See, Koza had a strong heart that burned as bright as the sun, but I worried that his compassion would one day be used against him" she softly sighed as she returned to her story, recounting to us the encounter she and the Sand Sand Band had had with a bunch of bandits.

"So Koza went with his father to find the city of Yuba? Does this have anything to do with the Rebel Army?" Nami curiously asked once the princess' tale came to an end.

"Yeah, the story didn't really seem to tie into anything involving the Rebel Army—but, it was still a sweet story" I said, brows furrowing in confusion as I tried to find the correlation between Vivi meeting her childhood friend and the Rebel Army we were about to go meet.

"Uh-huh, that's right" Vivi nodded. "We're heading towards the oasis of Yuba, that's where the Rebel Army is stationed—the leader of the Rebel insurgents is named Koza" she revealed.

"Koza?" I questioned, the gears in my head now turning. "Oh!" I brightened in realization.

"So that means..." Nami mumbled.

"It's the same boy from the story" Vivi smiled, confirming our thoughts.

"Nami, look! I managed to save you the best part!" Sanji happily cooed as he came rushing towards us, now holding up the severed and cooked claw of the scorpion he and the other men had only been fighting mere moments ago.

"Of course, should have known you'd all start eating it right after killing it..." I sweat dropped, chuckling as the women on either side of me started to scream—both huddling as close as they could to me as they leaned away from the severed claw in shock.

"This desert shrimp is good" Luffy remarked through a mouthful of food.

"It's not shrimp, it's a scorpion" Usopp corrected as he pushed the rubber man down.

"Oh, I'm so full" Luffy groaned.

"I didn't know it was even possible for him to ever feel full" I chuckled.

"You guys are a bunch of inconsiderate jerks!" Nami snapped as I reached back and patted the freaked-out princess' head in an attempt to console her, she only tightened her hold around my waist and further buried her face in my back. "Let's go, Eyelash!" the ginger huffed.

"Whoa, why is she so angry?" Luffy asked.

"Uh...I don't know" was the only response he got from the other men.

-Days Later-

"This is all the breakfast we could get?" Usopp whined the moment he saw just how little was on his plate. "Aw! Come on!" he complained only to be silenced by a swift kick to the face by a very annoyed Sanji.

"Seconds!" Luffy suddenly demanded, impatiently smashing his spoon against the bottom of his tin plate as if that would make him getting seconds happen that much quicker. He only stopped once the blond kicked him in the face as well.

"Don't be greedy, you've had enough for one meal!" the cook growled as I quietly laughed before staring down at my now empty plate. I was full...but, at the same time, I wanted more just like that captain...

What can I say? Sanji's cooking was good.

My gaze soon flickered away from my empty plate as I turned my head the second I felt a sudden weight on my shoulder.

"Excuse me? I'm not a pillow" I said, one eyebrow raised as I looked at the swordsman that was currently resting his head against my shoulder.

"Really? Because you sure do feel just as comfortable as one..." he yawned, closing his eyes for only a second before snapping them open to look down at his plate as if he had felt something was wrong. "Luffy, what are you doing?" he frowned the minute he caught the rubber man red-handed in stealing his food. Quickly did he pass his plate over to me as he stood. "Keep your hands off people's food, got it?!" he snapped.

"That might be hard for him to comprehend" I said, already starting to steal his food for myself as I watched in amusement as the men saved for Ace and Chopper started to argue amongst themselves.

"Why do they behave this way every time we eat?" Vivi sighed.

"Just don't make eye contact..." Nami irritably muttered as she picked at her food. "Skylar" she soon called down to me.

"Hm?" I hummed.

"You want to come sit with us?" she asked. "You know, so that you're not stuck down there with those morons" she said, motioning with her head towards the fighting men.
