-Chapter Seventy-Two-

"I think he might have fainted out of fear" I said.

"The old kook seems pretty tough, I never took him for a fainter" Usopp remarked as Chopper quickly rushed to the old man's side and pressed his head against his chest.

"Well, he was just cut free with a sword—I'd probably faint also after having something so deadly and sharp that up close and personal with me" I reasoned as I slowly stood now that the threat of being hit with a rock was no more. Crowding around the unconscious old-timer, I smiled as the goat I had been petting quickly followed along behind me.

"Oh no, guys! His heart stopped beating!" Chopper frantically cried when he was unable to locate a heartbeat, causing our eyes to widen as we all leaned away from Zoro.

"Zoro!" Luffy and I scolded.

"You!" Usopp gaped.

"How cruel!" Nami frowned.

"I'll say" Sanji agreed along with the bleating of the goats.

"Hey! I...what I...I didn't—" Zoro stumbled over his words as he frantically looked around, not quite knowing what to say to defend himself.

"I'm a doctor, is there any place nearby where we could stabilize him?" Chopper asked the goats around us.

-Later-

I boredly kicked my feet from my perch on the porch of the old man's small hut. Fingers lightly scratching the top of one of the goat's head—I'm certain it's the same one from earlier—which was currently resting on my lap.

"I think I'll name you Baxter" I sweetly cooed down at the animal in my lap. "How does that sound?" I smiled as he softly bleated in return as if he was pleased with the name that I had chosen to give him.

"I very well almost lost my life out there, should have known better than to drop my guard around you pirates..." the old man grumbled from inside his hut as he finally came to.

"Oh, come on—it wasn't our fault" Usopp frowned, not liking how the geezer was already starting to put the blame on us for his near death. "You fainted on your own" he defended.

"Your heart stopped because you were shocked to see us, old goat guy" Luffy added.

"On the Grand Line, you encounter surprises stranger than us every day—with that weak ticker of yours, I'm surprised you've lasted as long as you have old-timer" Sanji bluntly remarked.

"Yeah, I'll say" Luffy agreed.

"Just shows how much of a fighter he truly is" I hummed, turning my attention away from petting Baxter so that I could join in on the conversation as the two nodded in agreement.

"We're just happy that Chopper was able to resuscitate you" Nami smiled as the old man sat up in his cot.

"What's there to be happy about, missy? You scared the hell out of me!" he angrily huffed before picking up an abacus from his bedside table. "Not to mention you almost got me killed, now I'm laid up and can't catch up and do my chores! You scallywags owe me—now let's see here, how about 50,000,000 belis to be exact?" he asked, causing the men to instantly walk away.

"That's a bit much, don't you think?" I sweat dropped, scratching my cheek as I watched how he firmly shook his head in disagreement.

"Hey! You're overcharging, aren't you?!" Nami snapped. "At the most, it should be this much!" she huffed as she quickly fixed his supposed mistake.

"You're being stingy—even with a discount, it's closer to this!" the old-timer argued right back as he now fixed her supposed mistake.

"But minus Chopper's consultation fee, it's this" once again did the ginger fixed his supposed mistake.

"With how many mistakes you're both making, I can only assume you're both wrong about the price and are just trying to rip each other off..." I grumbled as I went back to petting Baxter, who gave a quiet bleat in agreement.

"Where do you young folks get off ganging up and picking on an old man like me?!" the old man suddenly cried, biting and pulling on his orange sash in frustration. "It ain't right, I tell ya!" he sobbed.

"We're not picking on you" Nami sweat dropped as she watched how he childishly buried his face into his pillow and began to weep.

"I can't go on anymore!" he wailed, causing the navigator to panic.

"Please don't cry!" she quickly begged.

"Nami didn't mean to upset you by questioning your shady business practices" I piped up before wincing as the ginger struck the back of my head.

"Don't get upset, old goat guy" Luffy said. "Tell you what, we'll chop your wood and do your chores for you, okay?" he kindly offered.

"You're the reasonable sport, aren't you, my straw hat-wearing lad?" the old man grinned, sitting back up as he seemed rather quick to get over his crying. "It's a deal!" he cheerfully laughed.

-Later-

"Wow, that old guy sure seems to have a dislike for pirates, doesn't he? I wonder why he has such a grudge against us?" Sanji pondered out loud while chopping up some wood.

"Hm, I wonder, it's not like pirates have a bad reputation and are widely known to destroy everything that's precious to someone—no, that surely couldn't be the reason why someone might hold a grudge" I sarcastically responded while feeding Baxter. Nami, Robin, and Chopper doing the same with the other goats around us.

"You sure are sarcastic when you want to be..." Nami grumbled, rolling her eyes.

"I try my best" I smiled before our attention was directed towards Chopper who was currently speaking with one of the goats.

"The goats say he's the only person on the island and he has been for the last twenty years, that's when he first washed ashore here from somewhere else" he explained, I hummed before looking down when I noticed that Baxter had bumped into me. He gave a loud bleat before opening his mouth wide which indicated that he wanted more food.

"Alright, here you go, you greedy little bastard" I grinned, giving him another celery stick.

"Twenty years?" Luffy questioned as he came back carrying buckets of water. "We've met someone like that before, right?" he asked, directing his attention towards Nami who only hummed in thought.

"You guys have?" I curiously inquired with a raised eyebrow. "I wouldn't mind hearing about that adventure" I hummed.

"Yeah, he was a pretty neat guy—you probably would have liked him, Skylar" Luffy grinned. "Especially all those weird-looking animals he had" he happily laughed, causing me to raise an eyebrow as I nodded. "Huh? Where are you going, Zoro?" he asked once he noticed the swordsman leaving. "Zoro? Zoro?" he called after the man when he didn't get a response right away.

"What?" Zoro frowned in annoyance. "I'm going to find something to eat" he curtly answered.

"You are?" Nami questioned with a raised brow. "Skylar" she suddenly said, turning her head.

"Yeah?" I asked, looking away from Baxter the second I heard my name called.

"Go with Zoro so he doesn't get lost" she instructed.

"Hm...okay" I nodded after a moment's thought.

"I'm right here you know!" Zoro snapped before irritably grumbling as I walked over to him—Baxter happily following close behind me. "Anyways, even if the old man does have food, I doubt that he'll share it with us" he pointed out as if finding it necessary to explain why exactly he wanted to go searching for food.

"Oh, cool" Luffy grinned. "In that case, bring me back some meat, okay?" he asked.

"I'll try, but don't get your hopes up..." Zoro said as we walked off.

-Later-

"Damn, they must have switched north and south on this island" Zoro cursed as we pushed our way through some overgrowth.

"Or we're just lost because of your awful sense of direction" I sweat dropped. "I let myself get distracted for one second by that lizard and you somehow go and get us lost...Nami's going to be so disappointed in me..." I muttered in dejection as I realized I had failed to prevent the one thing the ginger was worried about all because of some cool lizard I saw. "What's worse is I wasn't even able to catch it to show Luffy when we get back..." I sulked, depressed that I was unable to catch the reptile I had seen skittering on the ground due to Zoro having unintentionally scared it away.

"It's not my fault we're lost!" he snapped.

"Yes, it is!" I nodded. "It's as if you have this power to cause all those around you to get lost no matter how much they memorize the path they're on" I accused, watching as he opened his mouth as if he was prepared to argue before quickly shutting it and clenching his jaw as he turned away in embarrassment.

"Whatever...where are we anyways?" he grumbled, continuing to push his way through the overgrowth with Baxter and me following close behind.

"I don't know why I'm continuing to let him take the lead..." I muttered with a heavy sigh, listening as Baxter softly bleat from beside me as if he was asking me the same thing. "We're already lost, so I guess it doesn't really matter" I shrugged.

"Is that a ship?" Zoro suddenly asked, causing me to raise an eyebrow.

"A ship? Why would a ship be this far out?" I questioned, pushing past him to get a look at whatever it was he was staring at. "Well damn, it really does look like a ship—a pirate one at that" I pointed out, quick to take notice of the Jolly Roger that was flapping around in the wind.

-Later-

"It's lit!" I heard Luffy cheer not that far ahead of us, causing me to sigh in utter relief upon knowing that we had finally made it back to the others. Looking back, I made sure Zoro was still holding my hand and following close behind.

"We finally made it back" Zoro remarked as I sweat dropped.

"Yeah, no thanks to you..." I grumbled, knowing that we had only made it back because one, I kept choosing the opposite direction he wanted to go in, and two, Baxter clearly knew this island better than the both of us seeing how he eventually took the lead once he had gotten bored with the two of us blindly stumbling around.

"What was that?" Zoro asked.

"Oh, nothing" I innocently smiled while leading him toward the campfire the others had clearly just built.

"You guys still doing chores?" Zoro questioned the minute we joined the others.

"Yeah" Luffy nodded.

"Huh? I would have expected you all to be done by now" I said, taking note of the night sky and just how late it was.

"That old guy's been working us to death all day, he's never letting up" Usopp tiredly groaned from his spot on top of the roof.

"Yeah, we're all worn out..." Nami grumbled as she watched Luffy fall back in exhaustion.

"And hungry too..." he weakly added before perking up when he saw Zoro drop the bag of fruits we had collected during our impromptu exploration of the island. Gathering around the campfire, we started to eat while Zoro and I shared with the others of our findings. "A pirate ship?" the captain questioned.

"I know it sounds crazy, but there's one up there—I know what I saw" Zoro nodded as I bit down on my apple.

"He's telling the truth, so you don't need to worry about him being crazy or anything" I spoke up, covering my mouth while I spoke before swallowing. "It's strange, but it looked to be in somewhat decent condition" I pointed out.

"I wonder who could have made it" Luffy pondered through a mouthful of food, not bothering to cover his mouth at all as he talked. I got about ready to say something but decided against it with the shake of my head.

"Well, the old guy is the only one here" Sanji said, already starting to jump to conclusions.

"But why would that miserable old kook build a pirate ship?" Usopp asked.

"How should I know?" Sanji shrugged.

"Maybe he wanted to be a pirate at one point in his life" I suggested.

"That's crazy talk, he's clearly proven that he hates pirates" Usopp responded, quick to shoot down my suggestion.

"I think I might know why and we're in luck if I'm right" Nami grinned. "Anyways, let's check it out—just up there, right? Zoro? Skylar?" she asked, already running in the direction I had pointed in when Zoro and I were telling them about our adventure around the island.

"Let's go!" Luffy cheered in agreement, already running after the navigator.
