-Chapter One Hundred and Ten-
"Woo-hoo! Here I come!" Usopp grinned as he excitedly jumped onto the clouds and began to follow in Luffy's lead of jumping around.
"Me too! Me too!" Chopper happily laughed as he followed after the two.
"Ah! So soft—it's like a gigantic marshmallow pillow" Luffy comfortably sighed as he fell back onto the clouds as if they were nothing more than a soft mattress. "Maybe I'll just take a little nap..." he murmured, already looking just about ready to fall asleep before jolting awake as his body suddenly started to bounce around due to both Usopp and Chopper's jumping.
"They look like they're enjoying themselves" I hummed.
"Tell me about it..." Nami grumbled, rolling her eyes.
"Think I should join them?" I chuckled as she only seemed to grunt in response.
"Well, it looks like we can't sail through the clouds, so we have to find a way to get around them somehow" she concluded. "Hey, you guys! Try and see if you can spot a path the ship could take!" she called up towards the three bouncing around up on the clouds.
"Yeah, right!" Luffy nodded.
"Luffy, come check this out!" Usopp suddenly called out from somewhere out of sight.
"What?" Luffy asked, quick to scamper off toward where Usopp was.
"Where do you think you're going?! Get back here—quit playing around!" Nami angrily snapped.
"Who knows? One of them might have already found something of interest up there" I shrugged.
"What would be so interesting up there that they can't stay and listen to directions?" the ginger huffed before perking up when the two suddenly returned, hastily relaying to us what it was they had seen. "A gate?" she curiously echoed.
"Yeah, a big one" Luffy nodded as he hopped back down onto the ship. "It's up ahead, underneath the waterfall thingy!" he exclaimed just as Usopp climbed back down onto the ship before groaning as Chopper fell on top of his head.
"You alright?" I asked, bending down to check on Chopper as he shook his head.
"Yeah, I'm fine" he nodded with a smile.
"Hey! I'm the one that got hit!" Usopp frowned, grumbling as he rubbed the top of his head the second I waved him off.
"So, there's a manmade structure up in the middle of the clouds?" Sanji questioned as the ship started sailing forward.
"At this point, I'm not sure anything we find up here would surprise me" Robin admitted.
"Yeah, but then again, should this really be surprising?" I asked. "I mean Gan Fall and that Guerrilla guy looked human, meaning there have to be other people up here too, right?" I pointed out. "So should a manmade structure really be that strange?"
"Well, we'll see soon enough" Luffy eagerly smiled.
"Take a left next" Chopper directed.
"No, go right" Usopp shook his head, disagreeing with the reindeer as they both tried to lead us toward where they had seen the gate.
"But it's on our left" Chopper argued.
"I'll call the old guy" Luffy grinned before being tackled to the ground right as he held the whistle up to his lips.
"Hey, we're here" Nami said when we finally arrived at the waterfall we had caught sight of earlier.
"Looks quite lovely" I whistled as she hummed in agreement.
"Yep, that's a gate alright" Sanji nodded upon spying the metal gate Luffy and the other two had spotted. It looked no different from your standard gate down below, it even had a sign with the words, "Heaven's Gate," bolted right on top of it.
"And look, that weird cloud we saw is some kind of waterfall—it's coming down on top of those cloudbergs" Nami pointed out.
"Hold on, am I the only one reading this right?" Usopp asked. "Heaven's Gate? What's that all about?" he frowned in confusion. "Sounds like a place you'd go to when you die..." he muttered.
"Quite a fitting name for a place up in the clouds" I said, automatically settling down between Zoro's legs and using him as a backrest as we all sat around one another and started to discuss what we were seeing
"Yeah, well now that you mention it, maybe we are dead—have you ever thought about that, huh?" Zoro grinned.
"I thought Skylar was just joking early when she said that" Usopp whimpered, causing me to chuckle.
"Nah, that was just Nami trying to save your feelings" I playfully teased, causing him to whine.
"Huh, you know, that would go a long way toward explaining this weird place" Sanji slowly nodded as if he was agreeing with the notion that we all were dead.
"But I don't want to be dead!" Chopper fearfully cried.
"No, don't cry—he was only joking" I hurriedly assured the reindeer, quick in wanting to comfort him due to not liking seeing his tears.
"Who cares? We're here, right?" Luffy grinned. "Wherever this gate goes, I'm going!" he firmly huffed.
"Will you get serious?!" Nami snapped as she struck all of the men on top of the head.
"What was that for?!" Zoro snapped right back.
"If you're making a joke, it's not funny!" she growled.
"So why did you hit me?" Chopper whimpered as he painfully rubbed the back of his head.
"Skylar's the one that started it, so why didn't you hit her?" Usopp argued, rubbing the back of his head as well.
"Because she loves me—don't you, darling?" I giggled before quickly raising my hands and squealing when I saw the ginger raise her hand in silent warning.
"Wait—over there! There's someone coming out!" Usopp pointed when a door next to the gate suddenly swung open.
"It's an old woman" I owlishly blinked as a small, old lady came waddling out through the door. In her hand was a strange-looking shell that she held up to her face—it would occasionally flash every now and then as she pressed down on its apex. "Angel wings?" I muttered, raising an eyebrow the minute I caught sight of the two small wings that rested on her back.
"W-what?" Nami sputtered out.
"Look, Skylar's right! She's got wings!" Chopper gaped as he too now noticed the woman's wings as she lowered the shell in her hands.
"Wow! That's what Sky People look like?" Luffy questioned. "She's so wrinkly" he remarked.
"Well, I mean, she's old" I said.
"Um...hello...?" Nami hesitantly greeted as we came to a stop right at the gate.
"I am Amazon, the Heaven's Gate inspector" Amazon calmly introduced. "State your business—sightseeing or other?" she asked
"I…I guess it's kind of like sightseeing?" Nami answered, not fully sure if that was the right response or not.
"I mean, what other reason would we have to be here?" I shrugged.
"We want to go to the Sky Islands!" Luffy grinned. "They're past this gate, right?" he asked.
"Can we say all of the above?" Zoro asked.
"It makes little difference" Amazon admitted. "But if you wish to proceed, you must first pay the fee of 1,000,000,000 extols per person—that is the law" she explained.
"What? 1,000,000,000?!" Usopp gaped.
"They're big on these extols around here..." Sanji muttered.
"It's almost like that's their form of currency up here or something" I deadpanned.
"I can't even count that high—I wonder how much that would be in belis" Usopp pondered.
"It's got to be a lot, I mean a billion of anything sounds expensive" Chopper said.
"A billion per person, which makes 8,000,000,000 total" Robin counted.
"Something's fishy here, 8,000,000,000 just to go through a stupid gate? I think the old hag is trying to scam us" Usopp bitterly spat.
"You mean extortion us" I corrected.
"Listen, about the money" Nami piped up. "What if, you know, we don't have it?" she asked, quick to cover Usopp's mouth before he could really make another bitter remark.
"You may still pass" Amazon responded.
"What? Seriously?" Usopp owlishly blinked.
"What happened to saying that it was the law that we must pay the fee? Isn't much of a law if you don't enforce it" I frowned, before grunting as Nami smacked the back of my head.
"Shut up," she glared, "we get to pass by freely—just go with it!" she hissed as I only gave another grunt before nodding as I rubbed the back of my head.
"The choice is yours, I certainly won't try to stop you" Amazon said. "My job description does not require me to actually guard the gate, I'm merely here to ask your intentions" she confessed.
"So that settles it, we want to go to the Sky Islands!" Luffy grinned.
"But we don't have any money so we can't pay you" Usopp added.
"Very well, the eight of you then?" the old woman asked.
"Yeah, except we still need you to tell us how to get there" Luffy said before flinching when something suddenly burst out from underneath the clouds. "What the heck is that?" he asked, looking down in awe at the giant lobster claws that came up on either side of the ship before clamping down tightly on the broken wings that had been destroyed by the Knock Up Stream.
"The White Sea's famous Express Lobster" Amazon answered as our ship was lifted onto the giant crustacean's back.
"Ah! We're moving!" Usopp cried as the lobster began to swim up the waterfall, taking us with it.
"It's a giant monster!" Chopper screamed.
"Seems it's taking us up the waterfall" Zoro remarked, leaning back against the ship's railing as he wrapped an arm around my waist.
"Yep, guess this is one way to get to the top" I said, grabbing hold of the railing behind me while leaning in close to him.
"Everybody, hang on tight!" Nami ordered as she and the rest found something to grab hold of.
"Gotcha" Zoro nodded, tightening his grip around me.
"I can't really stop you from falling off the ship, I'm not bolted down" I told him.
"I know" he grinned. "But at least if I fall, I won't be alone."
"Ah, I see" I snorted. "Good to know that if you're going down, I'm going with you—what a good crewmate you are" I teasingly grinned while bumping my hip against his which only caused his own grin to grow.
"It's so fast" Sanji remarked as Usopp started to cry and fearfully babble out utter nonsense that I couldn't quite make out. "My money says we live through this" he suddenly betted.
"A cloud road that goes straight up, you might want to reconsider that bet" Zoro said.
"Oh! Are we doing bets?" I perked up. "Dibs on the possibility that we die a horribly, painful death!" I chirped before snickering when I saw just how pale Usopp became upon hearing such words leave my mouth.
"I hope you lose that bet!" he screamed.
"I wonder if this cloud is a natural formation of the clouds" Nami curiously pondered, ignoring us all as she clung to Sanji who was practically swooning at the ability to hold her so close to his person.
"There's nothing natural about this at all!" Usopp cried as he was now being held down by Zoro's foot so he wouldn't go flying off the ship.
"Having fun?" I asked, peering down at him from my spot next to the swordsman.
"You know damn well I'm not!" he snapped up at me.
"Look! The exit!" Chopper pointed. "They put up a big sign showing us" he noted while directing everyone's attention toward the brightly lit sign up ahead.
