-Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-Eight-
"And it won't be long before I have the bell!" Eneru declared, sounding quite certain of himself. "You seem surprised—did you really think that you, a mere human, could ever get the better of me? How foolish of you!" he scoffed while lifting a finger that now glowed an electric blue.
"Robin!" Nami frightfully cried, terrified at what was about to happen as she picked up quickly on what the man had planned to do.
"You wouldn't..." I tensed as I also realized what the man was about to do.
"There's nothing I hate more in this world than a cold calculating woman!" Eneru sneered, shooting the ball of electricity that had been building up on the tip of his finger right toward the raven-haired woman.
-Everybody's P.O.V-
It was like a throwback to Alabasta...at least, that's how it felt to Nami as she fearfully witnessed that same rush of impulsiveness reappear. Gasping as Skylar's body jerked and moved without any real thought, her feet carrying her before anyone could even think to stop her.
"Move!" she watched how the brunette shoved Robin away, taking her place and letting her body absorb the attack—taking the damage head-on without stopping to think her actions through or if it would be wise at all...
She shivered at the scream that followed.
It was a scream that painfully shook each of the Straw Hats to their core as they watched in horror how the brunette's body violently started to jerk and convulse with wisps of hair standing up as the smell of burning flesh now permeated through the air until finally, she stilled. She perhaps swayed for a moment or two on her feet before her body finally started to tilt back—eyes now rolling themselves to the back of her head as she lost all consciousness as if her mind couldn't withstand the immense amount of pain she now found herself in.
"Idiot!" Zoro shouted, the first to react as he quickly caught her before she could hit the ground—the warmness of her body making him wince as he shakily pulled her close to his chest in a protective manner. Despite the tightness in his chest, he felt an immense rage slowly start to swallow him the longer he held her close, not liking how unnaturally hot her skin now felt against his own as she lay still in his arms. "Dumbass why'd you..." he couldn't finish that sentence as he listened to the faint wheezing of her shallow breathing. He felt a desperate need to just press his ear flush against her chest in the hopes that he would still be able to hear a heartbeat and know that she was still kicking and that those shallow wheezes of hers weren't a sign of something worse to come. But he restrained himself from doing so...at least he wanted to believe that it was the restraint that kept him from doing such a thing and not the fear that if he did, he might find a shallow heartbeat.
"Skylar..." Nami thickly swallowed, afraid to speak any louder than she already was as she worriedly looked toward the brunette's still and charred body. Despite her fear and frustration with the brunette's impulsiveness...she wasn't really surprised...
She knew that if the brunette was willing to take a spike through the chest for her then who's to say that she wouldn't take a dose of lightning for the others?
She didn't really understand why the brunette did it nor what compelled her to do such reckless things—wasn't it normally human nature to selfishly wish to preserve oneself over all else? Did the brunette truly hold them all so dearly in her heart that she never wanted to witness them suffer? That felt like the only explanation in Nami's mind that sounded logical as there really was no other reason why someone's first instinct would be to jump headfirst into danger to prevent another's possible death. Sure, there are times were the brunette could be pretty logical and understand that jumping head first wasn't always the answer...but then there were times like this where all logic seemed to just fly right out the window. It was almost as if she only really reacted when she could see the danger clearly with nothing there to obscure or hide it from her sight—it's almost as if she only really reacted when she truly feared that death was a real possibility.
Robin, compared to the other two, was left speechless—utterly baffled by the brunette's actions as she quietly peered down at the teen's burnt body in utter confusion. It made no sense to her why the young girl would do such a reckless thing for someone like her. It wasn't as if they were close, their conversations with one another since joining the crew rather sparse—despite how small the Merry was, they rarely saw or spoke to one another outside of pleasantries. She was well aware the teen was a rather sweet kid after silently watching her interact with the others. Always joining in on the captain and his loyal follower's reckless fun on peaceful days or offering to help the cook with any messes in the kitchen when she has nothing better to do, always making polite conversation with the navigator whenever it's just the two of them or peacefully spending time with the swordsman as they playfully joke and bicker with one another like they're the only people in the world. Yes, she was nothing short of kind, but...
She didn't know whether she should be angry or grateful toward the brunette—maybe both was the right thing to feel at that moment.
"Hm? Well, that was quite unexpected" Eneru raised an eyebrow, surprised by the brunette's foolish behavior yet unbothered by her interference as he simply shrugged and began to build up another charge of electricity at the tip of his finger. He was never one for failure and a small hiccup from such an annoying little rat wasn't going to be enough to deter him from taking out the woman that had so badly gotten on his nerves and disrespected him. He had no desire to let some lowlife human think she could outsmart him and not face the consequences, still determined to get rid of her without a care in the world that his first shot had missed. "Oh well, mishaps happen—I won't miss this time" he grinned.
"No!" Nami gasped as another bolt of lightning was shot out, this time hitting its mark before anyone could really react or stop him—Robin barely even had a chance to react as she lifted her gaze, eyes widening before she was struck. His actions had the same results as last time as the archeologist screamed, causing Zoro and Nami to wince as the swordsman quickly caught her the second she fell. Carefully shifting the teen already in his arms to one arm as he reached out with the other and wrapped it around the older woman's waist.
"How..." Zoro gritted his teeth in frustration, unable to get the words out as he shakily peered down at the unconscious two women he now held—one had risked her life to make sure the other was safe...but in a matter of seconds, her efforts were proven worthless. It was clear that this man who claimed to be God had no respect nor care for the brunette's selfless act and instead only cared about ridding himself of the woman that he deemed a nuisance. "How dare you!" the swordsman snarled, finally finding his voice after gently setting the two in his arms down before turning toward Eneru with a hateful glare.
"I do as I please" the blond grinned, further frustrating the swordsman who drew his swords and quickly rushed the man without a second thought. Swinging at Eneru, he found his attack instantly blocked by the man's staff. "You have skills" he praised, impressed by how much force the swordsman had put behind his attack.
"And you're completely out of your mind!" Zoro sneered as he took another swing at the man who once again dodged the attack.
"Arm Bazooka!" Wyper was quick to join in on the fight as he shot toward Eneru who easily overpowered the blast of the bazooka with his own electricity. "No way! How did he manage to neutralize the bazooka's blast?!" the Guerrilla gasped, not having expected his attack to be so easily overpowered.
"You still don't get it, do you?" Eneru asked. "Your energy doesn't even register to me—I'm more powerful than you can ever comprehend" he smugly grinned.
"The thunderclap reverberated..." Nami winced, covering her ears in an attempt to block out the painfully loud sound that had reverberated through the air after the two attacks clashed. "And that only happens when the air expands at the speed of sound—that's powerful! That amount of power is greater than anything we can handle!" she trembled at this realization. "It's true...he really is made of lightning!" she whimpered.
"The time is near, prepare yourselves, soon those who remain will set off for the Endless Vearth together!" Eneru declared. "Do you even understand what a rare privilege that is?" he asked.
"And why do you assume we'll be coming?!" Zoro snapped as he shot toward the blond once more. "I don't give a damn about your so call dream world!" he sneered, quickly growing tired of the nonsense the man spoke.
"Zoro...stay away from him! He's too powerful!" Nami fearfully cried out once she realized that her friend was only running toward his death by attempting to go up against the blond.
"You need a lesson—soon your body will know the power of God" Eneru said as Zoro slashed him across his chest—the attack deep and vicious enough to come out the other side and hit the stone wall behind him. Only the stone wall was really affected by the attack as the blond stood there completely unharmed. "I process a tremendous power that you puny humans can never hope to overcome—can you feel it now? The despair?" he mockingly as he roughly grabbed hold of one of Zoro's swords. "If one loses all hope...it's an experience like losing one's life!"
Zoro clenched his jaw as he now began to think of his friend and the woman that he…
Loved?
Yes. Despite how long it's been, he found that he still held those same feelings for her as he did back then when they were young as if that crush of his had never really gone away and instead only grew stronger the longer he thought about her and the day they'd meet again. If he was being honest, the concept of love at first sight had always sounded so silly to him whenever he'd hear others talk about it—whenever he'd overhear women gushing about a man they had just met or men bragging about how they'd finally found their soulmate in a woman they had only seen or talked to in passing. He never really believed it was possible to fall in love with someone at a glance until she finally came back into his life, bringing with her old memories and that silly old promise he had made on an impulse when he was younger and scared of the thought of forever losing her...
How the human body and emotions were such strange things.
His mind thought in a rational sense while his heart soared with the desire to hold and shower her with all the pent-up love and affection he still held for her after all these years. His mind argued that it's been years and to still keep hold of such emotions was dangerous and would only lead to heartbreak if he weren't careful while his body tingled in excitement whenever she was close to him that he never wanted to pull away or lose her ever again. Every touch they shared always sent shocks through his system and made him lose all sense of rationality until all that was left was a man fueled by love and fear of all the things that could go right and wrong if he didn't play his cards right. A man who found himself acting on impulse while simultaneously racked with nothing but overwhelming anxiety at the thought that all he was doing was digging him further into the grave. It didn't really help that he had no idea if she felt the same...
Did she feel the same?
Such a question struck fear into him—the same kind of fear that made him freeze up and unable to speak or confess any sort of remembrance of her despite rationality saying that they both clearly still do remember the other. How ironic that those fears of his were the exact same ones Skylar suffered as well. Neither of them is able to see the other's silent struggle as they subconsciously act on their desires and remembrance of one another yet still allow for their fears of rejection and humiliation to stop them just short of taking that final step needed to vocalize the emotions that were so clearly there. How painfully obvious it was to those around them that there was something there between the two as they'd silently watch them from the corners of their eyes—taking in the joyful laughter and the affectionate gestures they'd share as they subconsciously reach for one another. Watch how they'd tease and playfully flirt with one another yet turn around and still claim to be nothing more than simple friends as if they feared that if they spoke of their true feelings, everything would fall apart and they'd lose everything. How infuriating it was to watch as they danced around one another while turning their eyes away from the obvious truth before them because what if they were wrong?
What if they were reading too far into things?
Fear and pain were the strong emotions that could bring anyone to their knees and make even the most rational of people second guess themselves with humiliation a close second. It was only human nature to avoid the things you fear or that might bring you pain—it was only human nature to want to avoid possible humiliation. No one wanted to be made a fool just as much as no one wanted to experience the agony of having their heart ripped from their chest and stomped on because they mistook a friend's affection for love...
Zoro found it ridiculous how one woman could send his emotions into a frenzy and fill him with so much anxious dread that he didn't know what to do. Normally, he had no trouble speaking his mind and being blunt...yet he couldn't bring himself to do such a thing with Skylar. She was far too important and the mere idea that he could learn something he never wanted to or even ruin everything between them, scared him more than anything. Maybe when they had first arrived up here in the clouds he had felt himself ready to confess—ready to tell her the truth and pour his heart out before carelessly getting himself lost in his own thoughts the longer he stared. There was just something so memorizing about those eyes of hers, eyes that glistened like melting ice yet made him feel warm whenever they'd look at him with such gentle kindness.
It had startled him when she suddenly flung herself back and off of the ship, an act that had been done out of frantic panic as if she felt she had no other choice—an act that had harshly snapped him back into reality and reminded him of where he was and what he had just been about to do. He didn't know why she had reacted in such a way, but a part of him silently thanked her because he feared that he would have ruined or messed something up had she allowed him to mindlessly speak without thinking...
He wasn't ready.
He had realized that fairly quickly after she had jumped off the ship to get away—realized that he wasn't really ready to make a confession like that. Especially not with his mind all foggy with memories of long ago to the point that it felt more like he was a kid again and not a grown adult about to confess something serious to a woman he held strong feelings for that would possibly change the direction of their friendship forever. Despite the fear that thought sent through him, he told himself that whenever he did feel the time was right and he did know for certain that he was ready to confess with a clear head, he was going to do it no matter if she was ready to hear it or not. He was going to tell her when he felt when the time was right without a care in the world if she was ready or not to hear it because he knew that at some point it needed to be put out there...
One of them needed to overcome this silly fear of theirs eventually if they were ever going to take that final step needed.
Zoro was startled out of his thoughts by the sudden feeling of electricity traveling down his sword and up his arms. His body was soon overcome by an immense amount of pain which caused it to violently twitch and jerk around before eventually, he dropped to his knees.
'Zoro!' Nami covered her mouth in horror as she witnessed for the third time that day another friend of hers be electrocuted and taken down.
"People fear death above all things, that's why people prostrate themselves before an immense power and beg for mercy" Eneru calmly explained as he roughly smashed his foot against the swordsman's face. "It is simply the natural order of things—beings are meant to bow before which they fear" he pressed his foot down harder as he said this. "It's a shame, you're bound by your instincts" he sighed as if he pitied the people before him and thought them nothing more than mere ants beneath his feet.
'I can't believe how incredibly strong he is' Zoro clenched his jaw as his face was further smashed into the ground, only finding relief when Eneru's attention was suddenly dragged away from him and toward Wyper who had suddenly attached himself to the man. His legs now wrapped tightly around the blonde's waist as he threateningly pressed the palm of his hand against his chest.
"What do you think you are trying to do?" Eneru asked in disinterest. "And now time to die" he sighed after receiving nothing more than heavy breathing as a response.
"Are you familiar with Sea Prism Stone, Eneru?" Wyper panted before thickly swallowing.
'Sea Prism Stone? That's a stone that can counteract Devil Fruit powers' Zoro sighed as Eneru finally removed his foot from his face before grunting as he was kicked a couple of feet away as if he was no longer of use to the blond.
"Well then, do your worst, Shandorian" Eneru calmly said, his legs now starting to tremble as if he was now having trouble standing.
"Sea Prim Stone...it's said to harness the power of the entire ocean in a single blast—it's the sea condensed into solid form..." Nami muttered to herself. "If anything can overcome the power of the Devil Fruit, it's that stone!" she grinned as relief flooded her system now that she was aware there was a chance that they could actually win and take the blond down here and now.
"Die!" Wyper growled as he began to press his hand harder down onto the blonde's chest.
"Are you sure you know what you're doing? You are aware of the consequences—aren't you?" Eneru asked with a raised eyebrow, his demeanor calm as he showed no hints of fear. "Your body will pay a heavy price as well" he remarked just as the Shandorian roughly pushed him down onto his back. "Why sacrifice yourself for a homeland that you will never regain?" he curiously asked with the slight tilt of his head.
"If I must, I'll gladly die if it means I can take you with me!" Wyper sneered.
"Don't do it" Eneru warned, watching with dull eyes as the man finally pressed down on the apex of the dial that he had hidden within the palm of his hand which in return caused a bright light to flash and blind everyone in the area.
"Reject!" Wyper's body was harshly thrown back by the force of the explosion that came from the dial in his hands—his body flying backward as if it was nothing more than a rag doll.
"No way! He really did it!" Nami gasped as Wyper weakly stood back up and silently stared down at Eneru who was now sprawled out on the ground. Heavily did he pant as smoke rose from the palm of his bandaged hand—his panting soon turned into harsh coughs though as blood now spewed from his mouth, causing him to stumble around for but a moment before straightening his back out once more as if he had finally regained his balance.
"Robin! Skylar!" Nami worriedly rushed over toward the two the minute she felt that it was safe for her to leave her hiding spot. Looking at them, she took note of just how peaceful they both almost appeared as if they were just taking a nice refreshing nap instead of being knocked out unconscious due to the excruciating pain that they were no doubt currently feeling thanks to the bolts of lightning that had hit them. Her hands shook as she hesitated in touching either one of them, not knowing if she should attempt to move them somewhere safer or leave them right where they were. "Gan Fall?
"Oh no!" she loudly whimpered when she suddenly looked toward the older man and found that he too was currently still. She didn't have long to mourn or weep over those who had fallen before a bright light suddenly caught her attention as Eneru's body seemed to just start pulsating with electricity. 'It can't be...he's restarting his own heart!' she gasped, shaky hands lifting to cover her mouth as she watched in horror how the blond slowly started to stand right back up just as Wyper's legs finally gave out on him.
"It's not that people fear God, rather it is God who is fear itself" Eneru grinned the minute he was back up on his own two feet.
'What the hell is this guy?' Zoro stared in shock with his mouth agape, unable to process how the man was able to survive such an explosion.
"Wyper, I warned you, did I not? I warned you of the consequences, and now look where you are" Eneru tsked, unamused as he watched how the Shandorian continued to cough up blood before finally, he fell flat on his face—just barely able to find the energy to move. "How pitiful, you call yourself a warrior?" he mocked.
"Don't address me!" Wyper weakly snapped. "As if you know anything about me! Eight hundred years ago, proud Shandorian Warriors fought for the faith of this city—they fought to their deaths to protect it! I am a descendant of those warriors...one day our homeland was taken away from us..." he panted. "For four hundred years, we've carried great Warrior Calgara's pride!
"We've sought to retrieve our homeland to its rightful place for generations and now that I've finally made it, you're standing in my way!" he snarled before groaning as he was harshly kicked back to the ground the minute he stood up, causing one of the dials attached to his feet to break.
"I must admit, you landed a good blow" Eneru slightly praised as he mindlessly rubbed at his chest. "But what a cheap trick, using that Sea Prism Stone—and to top off that, using the Reject Dial should have easily killed any ordinary user" he continued as he took note of the dial that the warrior had used against him. "But you shot it off twice and you're still breathing, quite impressive—however, you're still no match for me" and with that, he used his staff to hit the drums that were attached to his back.
"Is that a bird...?" Nami weakly mumbled as she watched how the electricity that was emitting from the man's body began to take the form of a bird.
"Thirty Million Volt Hino!" Eneru sent the electric bird flying toward the Shandorian, looking rather pleased with himself the minute he heard the scream that clawed its way out of Wyper's throat. Violently the warrior's body began to twitch and jerk about as painful, wretched screams continued to leave his person.
"So this has a Sea Prism Stone, huh?" Zoro grunted, pushing himself up before dashing toward one of the broken dials that Wyper had dropped. Quick was he in scooping the dial up into his hands before rushing right toward Eneru.
"And now it's your turn, swordsman of the Blue Sea" the blond calmly remarked, eyes dully staring toward the swordsman that came rushing right at him.
"The only choice now is to kill or be killed!" Zoro grounded out, feeling that there was no other choice—either he was going to die or the man before him was.
"Kiten!" just like with the electric bird, the electricity that left Eneru's body seemed to take on the form of a beast that was quick to shoot forward and wrap itself around the swordsman. Completely engulfing him in electricity that coursed through his entire body and caused him to come to a screeching halt.
"Zoro!" Nami cried as she listened to the way the swordsman screamed in agonizing pain, his weapons clattering to the ground before finally, he fell back unconscious. Sitting there, tears streamed down the ginger's face as she weakly looked all around her at the bodies that littered the ground before hesitantly she allowed her gaze to finally land back on Eneru. 'Everyone has fallen to him...' she quietly whimpered just as he directed his attention towards her. "How could he...?" she breathlessly breathed.
