-Chapter One Hundred and Forty-Five-
"Zoro, did you see me take care of them back there?!" Usopp excitedly laughed, running beside the swordsman and me.
"Yeah, not bad" Zoro grinned.
"I'll admit, you did good out there" I chuckled, smiling as I watched how the sharpshooter proudly puffed out his chest—pleased with the praise he had gotten for his bravery even if I did think we were all overreacting and jumping to irrational conclusions.
"Hey, Robin, better hurry up!" Sanji cooed as he wildly waved back at the woman behind us.
"Don't stop until we reach Cloud End!" Luffy ordered.
"Hooray!" we cheered.
"Sanji, did we lose them?" Usopp asked as we rushed downhill toward where the ship was docked.
"Looks like they gave up, I don't see anyone" Sanji answered the minute he peered back and found that no one was following behind us.
"Really? Well, that's good" Usopp sighed in relief. "To be honest, their giant cannon really scared me—where were they hiding that thing, and how come they didn't use it against Eneru?" he frowned.
"Their cannon?" Robin inquired, raising an amused eyebrow.
"Yeah, you know? That huge thing the warriors were carrying toward us—didn't you see it?" Usopp asked, causing the older woman to chuckle.
"Though I still have my doubts it was actually a cannon, how could you not have seen it?" I asked. "It was huge and they were carrying it right behind you whatever it was."
"Oh, you mean that thing" Robin smiled.
"Yeah, "that thing," what's wrong with you? It's not funny—why do you think we're running?!" Usopp angrily snapped the minute he heard the amusement in the archeologist's voice.
"Yeah, Robin, Usopp's right" Chopper frowned. "Don't laugh, alright" he softly scolded.
"We made it! There's Nami and Conis!" Luffy cheered as we finally started to near the ship.
"Where?! Nami and Conis!" Sanji excitedly shouted, quick to turn his gaze forward in an attempt to spot the other two women...only to immediately ram into a low-hanging branch the minute he did so.
"Ow! That must have hurt" I winced, cringing back just a little at the thought of how painful that must have been for the blond.
"Are you alright?" Robin asked.
"Oh, yeah" Sanji smiled as he quickly shot back up and acted as if he didn't just ram face-first into a tree branch.
-Later-
"Okay, we're almost there" Conis assured us, serving as our temporary guide as she led us through the sea of clouds and toward Cloud End. "Everyone, see that up ahead? That's Cloud End" she pointed, motioning toward the towering gates that now awaited us up ahead.
"Whoa! Let me see!" Usopp awed as he leaned over the ship's railing in an attempt to get a closer look at the gates.
"Huh? So that's where we go back down from?" Luffy questioned, tilting his head.
"We got here sooner than I thought" Usopp admitted, not expecting to reach this place so soon.
"I'm so glad we're finally going to get to go home—Skypiea's nice and all, but I miss our ocean" I softly smiled, pleased to go back down to the ground below and be able to see our beautiful blue ocean once again.
"Aw! Do we really have to go back already?!" Luffy whined.
"You know, it sounds crazy, but I'm actually going to miss this place" Sanji confessed.
"I think it's time we say goodbye to the White Sea" Zoro said while seated up on the railing that Chopper and I were leaning against.
"Sky Island sure is fun, but scary too" Chopper sighed.
"You can say that again" I hummed, nodding in slight agreement as I thought back to all the things that had happened since our arrival up here. "Felt like we've been up here for ages" I confessed, amazed that not that many days had really passed since our arrival.
"We just go through that gate and there'll be a Milky Road that'll take us to the Blue Sea, huh?" Usopp questioned.
"Wonder if we'll ever visit this place again" Nami wondered aloud.
"Well, you never know" Usopp shrugged, not really getting her hopes up but not really putting them down either.
"I'm sorry, but this is as far as we can go—goodbye my friends" Pagaya waved as he and Conis now ran beside the ship on the puffy clouds while our ship continued to sail onwards—having already gotten off the ship the minute we arrived as if to ensure they wouldn't accidentally get stuck on the ship with us once it got caught up in the current that would take us out of here and back home.
"Take care of yourselves!" Conis smiled with a wave.
"We will, thanks for the escort!" Nami smiled back.
"You've been of great help, we appreciate it!" I waved.
"Conis! Don't forget me, angel!" Sanji cooed.
"Say goodbye to the others for us!" Usopp called back as he said his farewells as well.
"See ya!" Chopper happily waved.
"It was nice meeting you guys, thanks for everything!" Luffy grinned as he sat peacefully in his usual spot up on top of the ram's head.
"No, you got it wrong" Conis shook her head. "We're the ones that should be thanking you—we'll never forget you! Thanks to you all!"
"Goodbye, Conis! Old guy! Furball!" Luffy waved. "Take care now!"
"Bye!" Conis and Pagaya continued to wave.
"Now, tuck in your sails and hold on tight—you're in for a bumpy ride!" Pagaya suddenly warned.
"Right, let's do as the man says" Usopp nodded. "It feels like we're already picking up speed" he noted as he felt the way the ship started to go a bit faster, no longer sailing at that same leisurely pace that it had been before.
"Yeah, and we're sliding down from a thousand feet in the air" Luffy agreed. "Hurry up!" he demanded.
"Aye!" we nodded, quick in setting off to work as we prepared the ship for the drop we were about to experience. But before we could do much, we halted and watched as the South Bird we had caught way back at the beginning of our adventure crashed into Luffy's face. Angrily cawing as he aggressively flapped his wings—it looked as if he was attempting to curse us out.
"What the...?" Usopp muttered.
"Hey, it's that South Bird" I said as the bird continued to kick up a fuss.
"He says don't leave without me" Chopper translated for us.
"Oh, that's the South Bird we brought up with us" Nami realized. "Captain, it looks like the Log Pose has the coordinates for the next island" she said, peering down at the Log Pose on her wrist as we finally began to near the gates of Cloud End.
"Great, let's go! Once we get to the bottom, we're going to start a brand-new adventure!" Luffy cheered as we started to pass through a decently long tunnel. "Who's up for finding some gold? Guy's get ready!" he excitedly grinned the minute we started to near the exit of the tunnel. "Blue Sea, here we come!" the excitement we felt was short-lived the moment we exited the tunnel as screams of fright now ripped themselves from our throats the second the ship violently plummeted down the Milky Road with no real warning.
"Everyone! Grab hold of something—the free fall is about to start!" Conis shouted as the ship flew right off the cloudy road and became suspended in midair.
"Freefall?!" we nervously questioned before more screams tore from our lips as the ship began to fall. My arms were quick to shoot out, grabbing hold of the first thing I could grab and pulling it toward me 'til it was pressed flush against my chest as I continued to scream at the top of my lungs along with everyone else.
"Heso!" we heard Conis call down to us one last time.
"Skylar, you're suffocating me!" Zoro shouted, his voice muffled by the fabric of my shirt as he pressed the palms of his hands against my shoulders in a desperate attempt to pull away. But I kept a deathly tight grip on his head, refusing to let go of him as we continued to fall.
"Why are we falling?! What kind of exit is this?!" I babbled, tears springing to the corners of my eyes.
"Octopus!" Usopp suddenly shouted as he began to freak out alongside Chopper the second they witnessed the sea creature burst through the cloudy water and fall toward us.
"What the...?" Zoro gasped as he finally pulled his head away from my chest and quickly grabbed for his sword, face flushed and breathing labored as he tried to compose himself in case he needed to fight. Only to then lose his balance and fall back as the ship violently shook once the octopus wrapped its tentacles around her and inflated its head like that of a balloon.
"Whoa!" I lost my balance as I went tumbling after the swordsman until my body was now sprawled out on top of his own.
"Well, that hurt..." Nami groaned once the ship stopped shaking and was now just gently floating downward thanks to the inflated octopus that now tightly held onto it. Shakily pushing myself up into a sitting position, I frantically looked around to make sure we really weren't still falling.
"Are we dead...?" I weakly asked, face pale and heart still thundering away inside my chest.
"I hope not or I'm going to haunt Conis and her father..." the ginger grumbled.
"What happened?" Luffy groaned, slowly sitting up as we began to take note that we were no longer falling like before and were now just gently floating downward. "Hey, guys! Get a load of this!" he grinned, excitedly hopping off of the railing as he stared up in childish glee at the inflated octopus that now served as our makeshift air balloon.
"What the hell is it?" Sanji frowned.
"A balloon?" Chopper questioned as Luffy laughed.
"That's strange..." I mumbled, before perking up the minute I heard a low groan come from underneath me. Curiously looking down, my face soon exploded with color the minute I spotted the swordsman whom I was currently straddling.
"You really don't like heights..." Zoro groaned, his face flushed a deep red as he seemed to almost avoid all eye contact with me.
"S-sorry" I sputtered, quick to scramble off of him.
"Yeah, ain't it great?!" Luffy laughed, referring to the inflated octopus.
"We're not falling?" Nami whimpered in relief as she realized that the ship was no longer making a quick descent down toward the ocean below.
"O-oh, good—for a minute there, I thought we were goners, all of us" Usopp shakily sighed before the sound of a bell tolling reached our ears, causing us to smile as we quietly listened to it ring as if the Skypieans and Shandorians were bidding as farewell one last time.
Time slowly seemed to tick by after that and it wasn't long before we found ourselves calmly lazing about.
"That was a terrifying experience I hope never to experience ever again..." I grumbled, boredly drawing shapes with my finger across Zoro's chest as he leaned back against the mast. He only grunted in response, a peaceful and relaxed look on his face as if he enjoyed the feeling of my touch—the feeling of my finger gently moving around his clothed chest and creating different shapes and patterns with every move it made.
"This is so great!" Luffy excitedly laughed.
"Tell me about it!" Usopp grinned. "What a way to travel—I love it!" he happily laughed.
"Gold! Gold! Gold!" the two and Chopper soon started to chant as they looked down at the treasure we had retrieved from inside the snake's stomach.
"We finally struck rich! What should we buy with all this loot?" Luffy eagerly wondered. "Hey! I know—a huge bronze statue!" he grinned.
