-Chapter One Hundred and Forty-Six-
"Why bronze?" I asked, stopping what I was doing for just a moment so that I could peer back at the captain with a raised eyebrow.
"Moron, only an idiot would exchange gold for bronze" Usopp frowned. "How stupid," he scoffed, "what we need are more cannons—ten of them! Ten!" he grinned.
"How is that any better of a buy?" I asked.
"Because cannons are more useful than a bronze statue" he defended as he crossed his arms. I couldn't really argue with him there, we could indeed find more uses for a cannon than we could for a bronze statue. But I still felt he was overkilling it with wanting ten of them, especially with a ship this small—where would we even put them?
"Nami! I want to buy a fridge with a lock!" Sanji called out to the navigator who was hovering near the entrance of the kitchen, silently watching as the men seemed to crowd around the gold.
"Ah! If you get one with a lock, there'll be no way for me to get a midnight snack!" Luffy whined as Chopper started to hop around, wildly waving his arms as if attempting to try and get the navigator's attention.
"That's exactly why I want one, you pig!" Sanji snapped.
"How tragic—perhaps you should ask for extra meals to make up for the loss" I grinned.
"That's a great idea! You're a genius, Skylar!" Luffy gasped before turning back around. "Sanji—"
"No!" Sanji scowled before turning into a lovesick puppy the second he felt Nami touch his arm as if she was silently telling him to settle down and not start any fights.
"Could you guys just hold on a second?" she asked. "We need to land first, then we can divide up the treasure."
"Please, buy more books!" Chopper suddenly exclaimed as he finally climbed up onto the railing in a desperate attempt to get the ginger to listen. Nami only grabbed his face in an attempt to silence him.
"That sounds nice, we could always use some more books on this ship" I hummed in agreement to Chopper's request, feeling that it'd be nice to have some new reading material to look through on this boat.
"If we buy everything you guys want, we're going to be broke again in no time!" Nami frowned, tightening her hold on the reindeer's face as if that would help emphasize her point.
"Miss Navigator, the ship, where is it heading exactly?" Robin suddenly asked.
"Where else? The next island, of course" Nami answered as if it was obvious before slowly trailing her gaze down toward the Log Pose on her wrist. Her eyes soon widened as a frustrated scream slipped past her lips.
"You okay?" Usopp asked, flinching as we quickly gathered around to make sure she was alright.
"What's wrong?" Luffy asked.
"Need a hug, Nami?" Sanji offered.
"I don't think that'll make her feel better, Sanji" I sweat dropped.
"Dammit! We've been blown off course!" Nami shouted in distress. "We must have hit an air current!" she quickly theorized after a moment's thought, already explaining away what could have happened.
"Well, I definitely feel a breeze" Sanji remarked.
"Is that a bad thing?" Luffy asked, looking around in confusion as if he didn't understand what exactly was bothering the navigator about this new dilemma of ours.
"I would assume that it is or else she wouldn't be freaking out" I nodded.
"Of course, it is! Now we have no idea where we are or where we're going to land!" Nami angrily snapped. "And with the octopus up there, we can't set the sails or control the ship! What are we going to do?!" she stressed.
"Don't worry about it, once we touchdown we'll just head to the next island, easy as that" Luffy smiled with a dismissive wave as if he felt that our navigator was overreacting and that there wasn't really a problem at all.
"There you go, running off with that mouth as always!" Nami scowled.
"Hey" Sanji suddenly said, catching everyone's attention as we turned to him and watched how he seemed to stare up at the octopus in thought. His gaze narrowed as if he was seeing something that didn't quite sit well with him yet didn't know what exactly it was.
"Sanji, what is it?" Nami asked.
"Is there something wrong with the octopus?" I inquired, tilting my head as I worriedly peered up at the inflated cephalopod. Nothing looked off about it as far as I could tell and there were no indications that it was in any pain while up there.
"Nah, I guess I was wrong" Sanji shook his head after a moment's thought.
"Huh? About what?" Usopp questioned.
"No, never mind" once again Sanji shook his head, now waving us off.
"We got a problem!" Zoro suddenly shouted, harshly jolting awake as he sat up.
"What? What's the problem?!" I flinched along with everyone else at his sudden outburst.
"Oh yeah, it was just a dream" he yawned before immediately leaning back and falling back asleep.
"The hell?" I questioned, eye twitching in slight irritation at the sudden fright he had given us all.
"Thanks for scaring us, moron!" Nami angrily snapped, causing Usopp and me to quickly hold her back and away from the sleeping man whom she now looked just about ready to murder.
"I'm going to kill you for that, I swear!" Sanji sneered.
"Now, now, these past couple of days have been hard on all of us!" Usopp attempted to calm them both, trying to keep any fights or arguments from breaking out and ruining the peaceful atmosphere that we sort of had going at the moment.
"He's right, everyone just needs to calm down—no point in killing each other" I nodded as Luffy burst out into a fit of laughter.
-Later-
"The sun is completely set now" Usopp remarked as he watched how the moon started to replace the sun.
"It's still a nice view" Chopper said.
"You're right, it really is" Usopp smiled.
"So you're finally awake" I hummed, watching from the corner of my eye as Zoro finally sat up.
"Morning" he sleepily yawned as he started to rub the remaining sleep from his eyes.
"It's still evening, dummy" Usopp and I deadpanned.
"This is taking longer than I expected" Robin admitted as she realized we were still in the air and nowhere near reaching the ocean.
"I agree" Nami nodded. "I'm really worried about how far we've drifted—we could be anywhere!" she frowned, stress rising the longer she thought about how lost we were.
"That is an uncomfortable thought" I agreed. "But even if that's true, I'm sure we'll figure something out" I assured her, attempting to calm her nerves as Sanji suddenly came twirling toward the three of us.
"What if I sang you girls a romantic song to take your minds off—" he was cut off by Nami's fist making contact with his face which sent him flying back and across the ship.
"Aw, what if I wanted to be romantically serenaded?" I chuckled.
"Ask Zoro then..." she grumbled, causing me to snort.
"You know what? I bet we got blown away to Raftel!" Usopp grinned
"Do you really think so?" Chopper excitedly asked.
"Uh...guys, unfortunately, that's impossible" Robin piped up. "We'd have to sail across more than half the Grand Line to get there" she reminded the two.
"Besides, I seriously doubt we would get that lucky" I said, crossing my arms.
"Um...yeah, I knew that" Usopp nervously chuckled.
"This conversation's boring" Zoro yawned as he stood up and began to stretch out his arms.
"You weren't even a part of it" I deadpanned, not seeing what he was complaining about.
"How much longer is this going to take?" he asked, impatiently looking around as if he was ready for the ship to land and for us to get back to sailing.
"Go to sleep!" Usopp snapped, quickly growing annoyed with the swordsman.
"Hey, Zoro—if you're really bored, I got something you could do!" Luffy called out from somewhere, causing everyone to look around in confusion when they couldn't immediately find the captain.
"Um...Luffy...?" Chopper questioned.
"Where did his voice come from?" Usopp asked.
"Hey, Luffy! Where the heck are you?!" I called back, cupping my mouth with my hands to ensure that my voice would be amplified and that he'd hear me.
"Good question, he did sound kind of far off" Nami noted.
"Luffy, where are you?!" Sanji shouted as well.
"I'm up here! Come on, guys, this thing's a blast!" Luffy laughed as we leaned over the ship's railing and looked up toward the top of the octopus' head. It didn't take long to spot our captain bouncing around on top of the inflated cephalopod's head like it was nothing more than a trampoline.
"What?! Is he nuts?!" Usopp frowned.
"Awesome! This is awesome!" Luffy happily cheered.
"Hey, don't do anything stupid! All our lives depend on this balloon—you hear me, Luffy?!" Nami shouted, clearly wanting him to understand that the octopus was not a toy and was currently our only lifeline at the moment.
"Don't worry, don't worry!" Luffy dismissively called back, laughing as he continued to bounce around as if he didn't have a care in the world.
"Be careful up there, we don't need you falling" I said.
"I will! You should come try this, Skylar, it's fun!" he laughed, causing my lips to twitch.
"Maybe some other time" I chuckled, waving away his offer.
"Luffy, stop! Get down!" Sanji suddenly shouted, his sudden change in demeanor enough to take us all aback. "Right now!" he frantically demanded as if he needed the captain to stop what he was doing this very instant.
"Sanji, what are you talking about?" Nami asked.
"The octopus is shrinking! If we don't do anything, we'll fall!" Sanji stressed, quickly making his way up to the top of the inflated octopus' head in an attempt to go and stop the captain himself. "Hey, Luffy!" he irritably shouted when he saw that the rubber man wasn't listening.
"What's that...huh?" Usopp asked still trying to process what Sanji had just told us.
"The octopus is shrinking?" Nami frowned.
"Please don't tell me we're going to start falling again" I whined.
"Shrinking?!" Usopp cried out in panic once he finally understood what was happening.
"You know, now that I look at it, it does look smaller than before" Robin remarked as she closely examined the inflated cephalopod.
"How could we have not noticed that earlier?" I frowned, realizing that she was right and that the octopus looked far smaller compared to earlier in the day.
"What are we going to do?! We're still really high up in the air!" Nami cried in distress as she frantically peered over the railing.
