-Chapter One Hundred and Sixty-Three-
"Oh, shut up!" I huffed, not in the mood to listen to the man broadcast just how easily the men of our crew fell for this little friendly setup of theirs just because they offered them food, booze, and women...as well as sweets, but I couldn't blame Chopper too much for his sweet tooth.
"The Party Distraction—and they lured in two Straw Hat boats for the K.O.!" Itomimizu laughed. Looking toward Chopper, I felt my anger die down just a little as I couldn't help but huff a laugh at just how adorable he looked upon eating his candy apple—how happy he seemed to be as he munched on the sweet. He was just too cute for his own good sometimes. Heaving a sigh, I let my head lull back and look upward as I came to the realization that it really was up to Nami and them to win this race just like she had assumed at the beginning.
"Nami?! Robin?!" Sanji perked up, quick to stand when he heard the two women scream upon having their boat almost destroyed. "Come on, the girls need our help—let's go!" he shouted, dragging Luffy back onto their boat—no longer caring about the other women he was now having to leave behind.
"Come on, big guy—we're leaving" I said, patting Zoro's back as I stood and climbed back into our boat.
"Chopper, let's go" Zoro motioned as he got back into the boat as well, wincing just a little as I struck the back of his head.
"Now that you're both done being all buddy-buddy with the enemy, we can probably catch up to the two of them if we hurry" I remarked the moment I spotted just how far ahead Sanji and Luffy had gotten. Zoro only nodded as he rubbed the back of his head.
"Alright, folks!" Itomimizu began. "Currently in the lead of the race is everyone's all-time favorite—the "Cutie Wagon." Behind them in second place is the "Barrel Tiger" followed by...wow, guess they're back in the running—third place is the "Crab Crane" it seems!" he announced, surprised by who was taking up third place.
"We're so far behind" I couldn't help but pout as Zoro snuggled his face into the back of my head, mumbling small apologies as he did so. I've never really been competitive but knowing that we were really lagging behind the others—especially behind Sanji and Luffy's boat of all things—annoyed me just a little. "Eh?" I blinked when Sanji and Luffy's boat suddenly rocketed forward and left us even further behind.
"Ah, we're getting nowhere here..." Zoro grumbled as he placed his chin on my shoulder. "I'm pretty sure it would be faster if we paddled" he noted, already starting to look for the paddles that we had been given at the beginning of the race along with our barrels.
"Yeah, well...the thing is…" Chopper started to nervously laugh as I twirled a strand of hair around my finger, avoiding looking at the swordsman altogether.
"We kind of used the oars to build the handler..." I finished, sweating bullets as Zoro now irritably looked between the reindeer and me. Before he could get the chance to chew us out for our stupidity, he suddenly turned and cut off a piece of our boat—trying his best to block the spike that had been sent toward us by the other Swordfish King boat that was still in the race.
"Huh? I forgot that there were two of them..." I muttered as Zoro jumped from our ship and onto theirs.
"Not even a hello, huh?" he questioned.
"Not our style—we believe in winning anyway we can!" one of the men on the other boat grinned.
"Really? Well, in that case, Bull Point!" Zoro wasted no time in attacking the opposing boat—quickly diving into the water before any of the men had a chance to fight back as their boat slowly began to sink.
"Zoro!" Chopper gasped.
"Damn! If we're going down, we're taking you with us!" one of the men sneered as he and his men shot a spike toward our boat, destroying it on impact.
"Chopper! Skylar! Look out!" Zoro shouted as we were roughly thrown into the water.
"The Swordsman's barrels and the "Swordfish King" have been sunk!" Itomimizu announced as I broke through the surface of the water, spitting out a stream of water from my mouth and pushing wet strands of hair away from my eyes before frantically looking for the swordsman and reindeer who were nowhere to be seen.
"Zoro?! Chopper?!" I worriedly called out, twisting around before sighing in relief the minute they emerged not that far from where I had. Swimming over to them, I found myself concerned for the reindeer when I remembered that out of the three of us, he couldn't exactly swim.
"They're officially disqualified!" Itomimizu proclaimed.
"Thank goodness you're both alright" I sighed as I looked from the swordsman to the weakened animal in his arms in relief when I saw they were still breathing.
"What about you? Are you okay?" Zoro worriedly asked.
"That really stunk—thank you, Zoro!" Chopper cried, tearfully sniffing before embarrassingly blushing the moment I pecked the top of his head, sweetly smiling when I saw that he was just fine.
"I'm fine, no need to worry" I assured the swordsman, pecking his lips before pulling away with a smile and resting my forehead against his as I listened to the way Chopper giggled at the sight of the flush that now stained Zoro's cheeks.
"Good to know..." he smiled, gaze softening as he softly huffed.
"And the race has finally entered its climactic moment!" Itomimizu proclaimed, continuing to commentate on the still-going race as Zoro, Chopper, and I finally dragged ourselves back onshore, only facing a small hiccup in the form of the swordsman constantly trying to swim off in the wrong direct once or twice. "The "Cutie Wagon" is holding onto its lead spot, but the "Barrel Tigers" are right behind them and the "Crab Crane" is maintaining its spot in third!" he proclaimed. "What the hell? Where did the "Crab Crane" go? Oh, there it is—unbelievable, folks, the "Crab Crane" is officially out of the race!
"But I don't know how—what's that? Oh! They're now approaching the most fearsome obstacles of the course, the Long Coral Reef, and just beyond that foreboding difficult patch is the dreaded Long Ring Whirlpool of Long Cape!" he continued, not stopping to take a single breath as he continued to relay to everyone that couldn't see what exactly was happening out on the water. "Can they overcome these hurdles? And...oh!
"Well, I'll be, talk about unexpected—it's Full Dash Hamburg at full dash speed! And riding on top of him is the master of the destruction of the south, the scourge of fairness and bravest scoundrel of all time, our boss, Silver Fox Foxy!" he gasped. "This race is really heating up—the next course obstacle, the Long Coral Reef, is dead ahead! Leading in the race are Porche and the "Cutie Wagon," and pursuing close behind are the Straw Hats' "Barrel Tigers" and "At Least It Floats"! Don't forget there's someone on land looking for every opportunity to sabotage this race, our boss, Silver Fox Foxy!" he continued.
"I'll give him credit, he's a good commentator..." I muttered, slightly impressed with his continuous talking with very few breaks in between to breathe as he followed right alongside the competitors who were still in the race. Relaying to us every little thing happening between them.
"Just what does he have in store for us?" Itomimizu asked. "But wait—what's this? The Straw Hats are slowing down? The "Cutie Wagon" takes advantage of this opportunity and plunges forward into the Long Coral Reef!" he exclaimed. "What?! The "Cutie Wagon" has been pushed back out of the reef—what's happening down there?!" he gasped.
"I know I was praising him earlier for being a good commentator, but man does he talk a lot" I frowned, realizing that despite what the man thought, we probably didn't need every tiny little detail involving the race. It was like nonstop rambling on his end, something that wasn't made any better by the sound of his ever-fluctuating voice as he tried to sound dramatic whenever relaying a sudden turn of events involving the race.
"Well, at least we know where the others are in the race—with luck, we'll win this" Zoro chuckled, causing me to softly sigh as I leaned against him and peered up at the sky.
"Yeah, hopefully..." I muttered. "But hearing someone tell you what's happening isn't as fun as actually watching what's happening" I confessed, realizing that I'd rather be watching the race with my own two eyes than have someone relay to me everything that's happening. Sadly it was nearly impossible to do such a thing with how long the island was and how difficult it'd probably be to follow alongside the water's edge while keeping up with the racers.
"What's this—the Straw Hats are picking up speed? All three boats are about to enter the Long Coral Reef at the same time!" Itomimizu announced as he finally picked back up on his commentary. "The "Barrel Tigers" and "At Least It Floats" haven't been pushed back! Ha! And there you have it—the devilish interference we've all been waiting for!
"Now, it will be far too dangerous for the Straw Hats to proceed any further!" he sounded cocky with whatever had happened. "They made it through with no trouble at all—how is that possible?! Incredible! The Straw Hats sailed through the Long Coral Reef with ease, but what about the "Cutie Wagon"? Oh no, it seems they've been pushed back again!
"But they won't be celebrating for long—once they're out of the reef, they're heading straight into the Long Ring" he ominously warned. "Oh! The "Barrel Tigers" and "At Least It Floats" have picked up tremendous speed—no wait, they're not just going faster, they're flying! They're leaping right over Long Cape! They have now taken the lead, but wait, "At Least It Floats" has crash-landed on Long Cape and broke into pieces—it can no longer continue the race!" he announced.
"Such a shame, "At Least It Floats" is now disqualified" and once again, he came to another breather.
"That just leaves Nami, Usopp, and Robin now—I'm starting to get worried" I frowned upon realizing that Luffy and Sanji had been disqualified.
"Come on now, have some faith in those three—they'll pull through" Zoro assured me.
"I know, but..." I bit my lower lip, unable to stop thinking about the many times the announcer has mentioned how Foxy, for a while now, has been trying to interfere with the race. Clearly, he's not above cheating and though I have faith in Nami and the other two's wit, that didn't mean there wasn't a possibility he couldn't still do something to slow them down or stop them altogether. With the stakes so high, there was no way of telling what the opposing captain would do in order to ensure victory.
"And with that move, the "Barrel Tigers" now has a commanding lead" Itomimizu picked back up. "Does this mean defeat for the indomitable "Cutie Wagon"? They're not out of the race yet, by using Fishman muscle with the fin of a shark, the "Cutie Wagon" has doubled its engine speed! They're blazing through the Coral Line and closing the gap! The race is now half over, meanwhile, the "Barrel Tigers" desperately paddle on.
"What is this? She broke it!" he suddenly gasped. "Our boss' ploy number eighteen "Operation: Lie to Them" has failed—what a formidable woman, does she not believe in anything in this world?! She's foul mouth too" he remarked, relaying to us something we couldn't exactly see but probably had to do with Nami. "The race continues with the "Barrel Tigers" maintaining their strong lead—they are now clearing the Long Waves that keep flying into the sky; the boss releases his third nasty trick!
"Unbelievable! She completely ignored a child and sick, helpless grandmother!" he sputtered in disbelief. "The only thing she cares about is getting what she wants, how cold-hearted, the Ice-Hearted Navigator Nami! Did I mention she was foul-mouthed? This race will soon be decided" he said, making it clear to the rest of us that it wouldn't be long before the race finally came to an end.
"Thank goodness, it's almost over" I groaned, causing the swordsman beside me to softly snort.
"The "Cutie Wagon" is closing in quickly, these are the final moments of Round One, Donut Race—who will win? She even sees through "Operation: Fake Goal," formidable! Truly formidable!" Itomimizu praised as Nami seemingly saw through another trick of his boss'.
"Of course—if she's seen through all the other tricks, why wouldn't she see through that one?" I sweat dropped, not understanding why the man was so surprised seeing how Nami's been ignoring every single trick that Foxy threw her way...
Why was he even still trying?
She's been ignoring everything he's thrown at her so far, shouldn't he just call it quits and accept that he's going to lose? It felt almost ridiculous how determined the opposing captain was to win despite his constant failure. It's not as if he'd suffer any real loss when losing, with how big of a crew he had, I doubt he was even really close to every single one of them.
"And now, I have a question for her, what's it like to go through life so hated?" Itomimizu asked, clearly directing his question specifically toward Nami. "It's too late for her—her heart is cold! She has no soul! Meanwhile, Porche and the "Cutie Wagon" have tragically stopped at the fake goal! The purity of your heart is outstanding—pay attention, Porche, you've been tricked!" he shouted.
"The "Barrel Tigers" are finally approaching the Long Bamboo Cape—the goal is just beyond it! They're in the home stretch, Round One of the Davy Back Fight—the Donut Race—is about to come to an end!" he proclaimed.
"Finally!" I threw my arms up in relief upon knowing that it wouldn't be long before the race would be done and over with and we could finally have a break from this man's nonstop commentary. "I thought this was going to go on forever..." I tiredly sighed.
"I can't see, I wonder who's winning" Chopper pondered as he jumped up and down in an attempt to see over the crowd of people that blocked our view.
"Judging by that annoying commentary, I believe that Nami's team is in the lead" I answered. "Do you really have to drink right now?" I questioned, turning my head to look at the disinterested and drinking swordsman beside me—I wasn't at all surprised that he had been able to locate the alcohol they were serving. He was like a Bloodhound when it came to the stuff. "Don't you think you're celebrating just a little too early?" I asked, raising an eyebrow as he softly chuckled as he suddenly got a mischievous look in his eyes. Leaning over, he pressed his lips against mine before pushing what little alcohol he had inside his mouth into my own, causing me to gag once he pulled back.
"H-hey!" I sputtered, turning my head as I coughed and spit out what little he had shoved in my mouth before turning to glare at him while sticking my tongue out in disgust. "What was that for?" I frowned.
"You should know better than to question me when I'm drinking" he chuckled, lightly flicking my forehead as he went back to drinking. Puffing my cheeks out into a pout, I soon looked around and quickly noticed how Chopper was now nowhere to be seen...little guy must have pushed his way to the front of the crowd so he could cheer on the others.
"And the winner is...the "Cutie Wagon"! Congratulations!" whatever joyous air there had been before between us instantly disappeared as Zoro and I tensed—nervously exchanging glances of confusion and dread as we ignored the cheering crowd around us.
"They lost...?" I quietly questioned, stunned by this sudden turn of events—how could they have lost when they seemed to have maintained the lead for the longest time there near the end?
"The hero of the first round of the Davy Back Fight is our very own idol—Porche!" Itomimizu proudly proclaimed as Zoro helped me to stand before we quickly made our way through the crowd and over to the rest of our crew, desperate to know what exactly happened.
"Now it's time for you guys to pay up! We're taking one of your crew!" Foxy laughed.
"You guys hurt?" Chopper worriedly asked. "Is everybody okay? Robin?" he fretted over the three, making attempts to check up on them and make sure they were truly alright as they all sat there in disorientating confusion.
