-Chapter Two Hundred and Thirty-Seven-
"We better keep moving!" Chopper cried out the minute he noticed that the floor beneath our feet was starting to crumble and I couldn't help but flinch as both he and Nami soon started to scream when we all three found ourselves caught up in the wind that had destroyed the floor. A gush of wind that was strong enough to slam us up against and through the ceiling. I grunted the second my back slammed down on top of the roof.
"Ow!" I groaned, slowly sitting up and rubbing my back from the harsh landing as Nami seemed to land perfectly fine on her own two feet. "Lucky you" I grumbled.
"We're going to go ahead and save you" I looked towards the sound of Luffy's voice and was quick to spot Robin, a lavender haired man, and the rest of CP9 all standing on the building that was opposite of the courthouse. Blueno seemed to be the only one absent from the group as he was sprawled out on the roof not too far from where we were, passed out. Though I couldn't help but let my eyes linger on a certain CP9 member—a blond that stood quietly beside Kaku. His eyes were a soft, electric blue and his blond hair fell in wavy locks down his face.
"It can't be..." I mumbled as I continued to stare at the familiar blond, quick to avert my gaze elsewhere the moment his eyes looked towards me. Instead, I opted to look back towards Robin, I opted to stare straight at her as I didn't really have the guts to look such a man in the face and confirm my fears that he was who I thought he was.
"And if you still want to die after we're all back together, that's your choice" Luffy said.
"Ow! Ow! Ow!" Chopper cried as he tightly gripped his head from where he had harshly landed on it.
"Looks like you landed on your head, you okay?" Nami asked as I gently patted the reindeer's back in a comforting way and pressed small kisses to the top of his head in hopes of soothing the pain some.
"Yeah, I'll be fine" Chopper winced, looking down in embarrassment from my actions even though I did catch the way his lips twitched upwards into a small smile as he almost seemed like he wanted to bask in the positive attention. Cute. "But, what the heck happened back there?" he asked as he looked back at the giant hole that we had made the moment we had crashed through the ceiling.
"Oh, I think I might have an idea on what happened" I said, staring down the same hole in irritation.
"Really?" Chopper asked with the tilt of his head.
"Yeah, I think I also might have an idea of who's to blame" Nami grumbled as she nodded her head in agreement.
"There we go" Zoro said as he suddenly pulled himself up onto the roof. "That was a lot easier than dealing with those stupid stairs" he huffed.
"Are you stupid?! That was reckless!" I snapped as I hit the back of his head.
"Ow! What the hell, Skylar?!" Zoro snapped right back as he now rubbed the back of his head.
"There he is!" Nami growled. "I knew it was you! You're lucky we got out of the way in time—if that thing had hit us head on, we'd be dead right now!" she snapped.
"Next time think before doing something like that!" I huffed as I placed my hands on my hips.
"Oh, you're here too" Zoro said when he finally noticed Nami and it wasn't too long before Sanji kicked his way up onto the roof.
"I'm the first one here, no doubt" the blond grinned. "I've left Robin waiting long enough, time for her prince to—moss head? What are you doing here?!" he frowned the moment he spotted Zoro. "You're going to ruin everything!" he snapped.
"Finally made it, huh? You get lost or something?" Zoro laughed.
"You're one to talk" I grumbled before yelping as I was suddenly yanked downwards until the tip of my nose was just barely brushing against the swordsman's own.
"What was that?" he irritably asked.
"You heard me" I grinned.
"Whoa! Whoa, whoa—don't you dare! Don't even go there!" Sanji frowned after processing what the swordsman had asked, and it was at that moment that Sniper King came flying up to the roof—screaming at the top of his lungs.
"It's Sniper King!" Chopper gasped.
"Ah, so he finally made it" I said.
"What? He's flying!" Nami pointed out.
"Just like a true superhero" I chuckled which caused Chopper to perk right up.
"Awesome!" he awed.
"Where's he been all this time?" Sanji asked.
"How is he supposed to land?" Zoro questioned.
"Look at that, the gangs all here" Kaku noted.
"Yo yoi! Quite the show, indeed" a pink haired man said.
"Sniper King!" Chopper worriedly cried out the minute the long-nosed pirate smashed into the roof, quick was he to rush over to the masked man's aid.
"Rough landing" I winced.
"Although they may be our sworn advisories, to come this far is truly quite impressive" the pink haired man remarked.
"Tell me about it, thought they'd be dead by now" the familiar-looking blond said. I didn't even bother to look his way as my heart now vigorously pounded away inside my chest at the fear of looking at him once again and confirming my fears.
"This isn't funny anymore! Just go away!" the lavender haired man screamed as Chopper tried to pull Sniper King out from the roof with Sanji soon joining in on helping him when he found that the reindeer was having trouble.
"Come on, Robin, work with me here!" Luffy frowned. "You can say what you want—if you want to die or whatever, that's fine. But when you say it, you say it as part of our crew!" he huffed.
"Yeah, Robin, he's right!" Sanji nodded as he and the reindeer finally got Sniper King free.
"Come back, Robin!" Chopper shouted.
"We miss you!" I called up to her.
"Hey, Sniper King, can you stand?" Zoro asked.
"Hm? Uh...yeah, of course!" Sniper King nodded, quick in composing himself and deepening his voice. "A fall like that won't stop me! Really, I'll be fine" he assured Chopper when the reindeer tried to help him walk as we all took our place next to Luffy. A gentle smile tugged at my lips the moment I saw the tears that pricked the corners of Robin's eyes as she looked at all of us—a promising sign that she did indeed still care for us all.
"From now on, leave everything to us!" Luffy proclaimed.
"Those fools braved Aqua Laguna to get here, they're determined if nothing else" Kaku said.
"Either that or they're just lucky" a raven-haired man grinned.
"Remember, we have permission to kill this time" Lucci reminded them. "Save for one" he added and I knew exactly what he meant, they could easily get away with killing all the others, but not me. He may have been sadistic enough to leave me behind in some sick twisted sense of curiosity due to my family name and the reputation that the Strife family holds among the government, but he couldn't do it this time around.
"But, if we kill them, it'll be over before we have any fun" Kaku said as my body slowly started to tense up the moment I felt someone drilling holes into my person—casting a small glance towards the source of the stare, I quickly turned my attention elsewhere when I spotted it was the blond of the group doing it.
"The draw bridge?" Luffy questioned after Zoro had finished explaining everything we had learned up until now to him.
"Yeah, the Franky Family's trying to get that under control right now" the swordsman nodded. "Once they bring it down, we should be able to get to the other side, no problem" he said.
"What a pain, she's right there and all we can do is wait" Sanji grumbled.
"Just be patient, I doubt they'll do anything rash—they may have permission to kill us, but they can't lay a hand on her, they need her to be alive when they pass through the Gates of Justice" I assured him.
"Hey, CP9! Here are your orders—kill the intruders!" the lavender haired man ordered as he angrily pointed at us all. "But, only engage them here in the Tower of Law!" he laughed as a cocky grin pulled at his lips. "Stupid pirates! You may act tough, but you don't know what you're getting yourself into—open your eyes!
"Come on, you don't think you can beat all of CP9, do you?! And what about the Gates of Justice? You don't think you can open them, do you?!" he mockingly asked as his temper almost seemed to slowly be rising. "Even then, if things go wrong, I have this!" and with that, he presented to us a Golden Transponder Snail...just the sight of it was enough to make my breath get caught in my own throat. "The Golden Transponder Snail!
"Giving me the authority to issue a Buster Call!" he proudly proclaimed.
"A Buster Call?!" Robin gave a startled gasp as her eyes widened in horror.
"Yes, that's right—I'm sure you remember its power well" the lavender haired man smirked. "After all, it did destroy your home twenty years ago! What was it? Ohara? Hard to recall the name since it was wiped off the map!" he laughed as if he wasn't just mocking the deaths of hundreds of people. Ohara was an island that many of the government knew about as it seemed to almost serve as a lesson—an example as to why a Buster Call needs to be taken seriously and thought over diligently before being initiated.
"Robin's homeland?" Chopper quietly questioned.
"It's disgusting the type of power the government has" I snarled as I clenched my fists.
"He's pissing me off!" Sanji growled.
"Anything but that! I'm begging you!" Robin whimpered.
"Oh? Begging for mercy? I like that—what's wrong?" the lavender haired man mockingly asked. "You don't want me to press this and annihilate all your little friends with a Buster Call? Is that what you're saying?" he teasingly asked, acting as if the item in his hand was nothing short of a toy.
"You're insane! If you push that button...do you have any clue what will happen?!" Robin glared.
"Of course, I do!" the man snapped as already he was becoming irritated once again. "This button will eliminate any chances your friends possibly have of leaving this island alive! All it takes is one little press—it couldn't be simpler!" he screamed as if he didn't like how the woman was looking at him like one would look at a simpleton that didn't understand the weight of his actions.
"If you think that, you don't understand a thing!" Robin snapped as I felt my jaw clench the longer I listened to the man. I never expected the World Government to hand such a powerful thing over to an idiot and not explain the power behind it—they may be corrupt and they may let shitty people climb the ranks into high positions of power, but I at least thought they'd be smart enough to be wary in who they gave something such as a Buster Call to.
"Are all those old memories coming back to you now?!" the lavender haired man mockingly laughed. "Let's see, maybe I should press it after all! It might be fun!" his laughter only seemed to grow in volume as he now let his finger hover over the button as if he was really tempted to just press it.
"This isn't a joke, stop it!" Robin cried out.
"I'm the one who makes the demands here, wench!" the man angrily snapped as he stopped what he had been doing, now becoming infuriated with the raven-haired woman.
"You say Ohara was wiped off the map, but what a map doesn't show you is the lives of the people who lived there" Robin shakily said. "Your view of the world is so distant and so twisted that you lost sight of your humanity! There's a limit to how much you could sacrifice in the name of justice!" she choked out as she dropped to her knees. "A Buster Call is going too far, you can't use it—anything but that. If you trigger a Buster Call, everything will be destroyed—that includes Enies Lobby—and most likely you as well!" she exclaimed.
"Nonsense! What are you saying?" the man scoffed as if what she had just told him was the most ridiculous thing in the entire world. "They wouldn't kill a V.I.P like me, I'm not falling for your bluff!" he sounded so sure of himself that I couldn't help but scoff at his confidence—scoff that he literally believed himself so important that he would be saved from something as vicious and as cruel as a Buster Call.
"Doesn't matter if they're allies or foes, anything on an island that gets a Buster Call will be destroyed."
Those were the words my father had told my brothers and I during one of our lessons. He may have been an awful man, but he was hellbent in making sure we knew every little thing about the world around us and the government that ruled over it from the moment we could think for ourselves—he was a man that took his job seriously and understood it perfectly well and that's the only thing I'll give him credit for. This man's confidence and lack of knowledge was sickening in a way and it made me wonder how he could have ever made it this far. Was it through smarts or hidden strength or deceiving others? Perhaps it was no different from my family and his position had been given to him from some form of nepotism?
"Twenty years ago, everything was taken from me and many innocent lives were lost—with one push of a button, they summoned a terrible demon" Robin whimpered. "Now it rears its head again, hanging its sights on the friends I searched so hard to find...the more I wish for us to be together, the more my ugly fate bears its fangs at you" she shakily stood back up and directed her attention towards us. "Even now, no matter how far we sail, there's an enemy that haunts me at every turn because I'm facing the world and all its darkness. First, it was Aokiji, and now it's CP9—I've dragged you into my troubles twice already, if it goes on and on like this, no matter how kind you may be...someday, you'll see me as a burden! Someday, you'll be forced to betray me and throw me away!
"That's what I'm most afraid of, understand?" she asked as tears started to well up in her eyes. "That's why I didn't want you to rescue me—if that's the only future I have, I'd rather die! To save me the pain!" she cried.
"Robin..." Chopper mumbled.
"I never knew" Sanji said.
"Robin..." Nami sadly muttered.
"I see, so that's it" Zoro said.
"Robin..." I breathed out as I looked at the woman with sympathy.
"There you have it!" the lavender haired man laughed. "Yep, right on the mark! What a sorry case, even if you make friends, all you can do is drag them through the mud with you!" he mocked as he continued to laugh as if what she had just said was the funniest thing in the world to him. "You can't win, pirates—look at that flag! This symbol represents the unity of over 170 nations, a power that spans the four seas and the Grand Line!" he boasted as he pointed up to the flag at the top of the Tower of Justice—a flag that bared the symbol of the World Government.
"No matter how loud your bark may be, you can't stand up to an enemy like that! Just face it already, do you realize how strong our organization is?! Do you realize how devoted we are to capturing her?!" he sneered.
"If that's Robin's enemy, then I know what to do" Luffy frowned. "Sniper King, shoot down that flag" he requested.
"Roger!" Sniper King nodded as he took aim. "This is my new weapon, a massive slingshot by the name of Kabuto—behold its awesome power! Special Attack: Fire Burst Star!" he shot a whirlwind of fire that struck the flag in a burst of flames.
"No way!" Robin gasped.
"Mission complete!" Sniper King huffed.
"You're all going to die!" the lavender haired man screamed in horror. "You morons can't challenge the entire world and expect to win!"
