-Chapter Two Hundred and Thirty-Nine-
"Hey! What the hell are we doing?!" Franky cried out just as the train smashed through the wall of the tower. My grip on Zoro's jacket tightened as we went flying through the air and I couldn't stop the smile that pulled at my lips due to how crazy all of this seemed. But it wasn't long before a yelp ripped through my throat as I felt myself be being harshly shoved away from the swordsman and pushed out of the way of the falling debris. "Hey, talk to me, you guys alright?!" the blue haired man desperately asked Kokoro, Chimney, and Gonbe when he gathered his bearings and spotted them all sprawled out on the ground.
"Come on, you old hag, start talking! Just what the hell do you think you're doing pulling a flat out stupid stunt with Rocket Man like that?!" he angrily snapped. "I mean, thanks for saving us and all! Hey, you hear me?! Get up—please don't die, you old hag!" he begged, sounding more and more paniked the longer the old woman didn't respond to him.
"Bloody noses" Kokoro and Chimney sniffed as they suddenly sat up along with Gonbe, blood dripping from their noses.
"You're damn lucky a bloody nose is all you got!" Franky snapped at the three.
"Alright, we made it!" Luffy cheered as he burst through the rubble, looking completely unfazed or bothered that he had just been crushed under a pile of debris mere moments ago.
"Yeah, that was one hell of an entrance" I agreed as I slowly stood and rubbed my lower back while looking around in a state of confusion. One minute I'm clinging to Zoro, the next I find myself out of the way of the debris and rubble that was falling all around us the second the train smashed through the wall.
"Guess he's fine" Franky muttered.
"Thanks for the ride, Monster Granny!" Luffy brightly smiled before he started looking towards the others that still seemed to be out of it. "Come on, you guys, get up already!" he huffed, already motioning for them to get back on their feet.
"Luffy, give them some time, they've just been crushed by debris" I said.
"They've been through worse than that!" Luffy argued. "See, guys, Skylar's already up!" he pointed out as he motioned towards me.
"Don't drag me into this, I'm still confused by how I wasn't crushed" I said with the shake of my head.
"Oh sure, that's easy for you to say, you're made out of rubber" Sanji grumbled. "We're lucky we're not in pieces right now after a crash like that" he groaned.
"Yeah, and the only reason Skylar wasn't crushed is because Zoro pushed her out of the way" Nami huffed as they all finally came bursting out from underneath the debris.
"Aw, how sweet of him!" I cooed which caused the swordsman to blush. "My lovely hero!" I teased with a laugh when that blush of his only seemed to darken.
"See, you're all fine!" Luffy widely smiled at the group when he saw how lively they now were being.
"You know, you guys are a bunch of weirdos" Franky huffed. "I felt like I should point that out" he said.
"There's the staircase, over there! We better move if we're going to find Robin!" Luffy exclaimed the second he caught sight of the stairs as we all now headed towards them, quickly wishing to make our way through this building so that we could catch up to Robin.
"Not so fast!" a new voice shouted as we all now looked towards the heavy green haired man that clung to the wall and stared down at us.
"What the hell is that?" Luffy frowned.
"Chapapa! So, you've invaded the Tower of Law" the heavy man said. "There's no point in going on, you won't ever find Nico Robin! Lucci's already taken her to the Gates of Justice, oh, and the Chief's with them too" he said.
"Really? Thanks for telling us where we should start looking" Nami perked up, pleased with the fact that we wouldn't have to waste our time searching this entire building for the three.
"Indeed, that makes things easier for us" I nodded. "Thanks, pal" I grinned.
"Chapapa! Why did I tell them that?!" the heavy man shouted in shock the moment he realized his mistake.
"He's not too bright" Chopper sweat dropped.
"It doesn't matter! I might have told you where they're headed, but I'm not going to tell you how to get there, and you'll never make it past CP9 agents!" the heavy man boasted. "We were given direct orders to eliminate you! Chapapa! You want Nico Robin?
"Then you're going to have to fight your way through each one of our agents if you want to succeed!" he proclaimed.
"Duh! I liked it better when you were telling us things we didn't already know!" Luffy frowned.
"Chapapa! You've got some fire in you, but I got one more thing to tell you" the man said.
"Well, say it—we're listening!" Luffy impatiently huffed, wanting the man to hurry up so that we could be on our way.
"Uh...well, thank you, just give me a sec" the man said as he dug around in his pocket before suddenly retrieving a key. "Take a look at this!" he exclaimed as he held the key out for us to see.
"A key?" Chopper questioned.
"Is there something important about it?" I asked.
"What's it for?" Sanji curiously asked.
"For all you know, it might be the key needed to unlock Nico Robin's Sea Prism handcuffs" the man said.
"Sea Prism Stone?" Franky questioned.
"It's a stone that nullifies a person's Devil Fruit abilities" Nami explained.
"It's basically the same as when they fall into the ocean" I added.
"Well, now we finally know why Robin hasn't been fighting back" Chopper sighed. "I knew it wasn't adding up" he muttered.
"Yeah, she's not the type to give up so easy" Sanji nodded. "I'm sure she'd be mopping the floor with their ugly mugs if she had the choice" he huffed.
"She must feel so helpless" Chopper sadly noted as his eyes became downcast.
"Well, that sucks" Franky frowned.
"Even if you were able to get past us and save her in some imaginary world, that Sea Prism Stone is tougher than a diamond—she'd have to live with them on her wrists for the rest of her life" the man told us. "Chapapa! Why do I keep telling them this stuff?!" he shouted as he once again realized that he had said too much.
"What's the point of having a zipper on that big mouth of yours if you don't even use it?" I raised an eyebrow, taking note of the zipper teeth that lined his lips.
"He really isn't smart, is he?" Chopper asked.
"So be my guest, go and save her if you think you can! Chapapa!" the man mockingly laughed.
"Fine! Give me that key!" Luffy quickly demanded as he stretched his arm back before rocketing it towards the man, only for the heavy man to quickly disappear and let the wall take the full force of Luffy's attack. "Guess all these CP9 guys can use that move" the rubber man irritably muttered.
"Don't be hasty, you don't know if this is the key I got here" the man said as he reappeared somewhere else inside the room.
"You have got to be frickin kidding me?!" we snapped.
"It might be the key to another pair of cuffs for all you know! Chapapa!" the man sang as he started to twirl his body around. "In this great Tower of Law, there are seven members of CP9—including me and each member, each have their very own key!" he revealed as he kicked himself up into the air.
"One! Two! Come on!" Franky snapped his fingers over and over as if he was getting into the rhythm of the man's song even though his singing wasn't all that great.
"So, let's play a game of hide and seek—jump!" the man threw himself even higher into the air.
"Yeah!" Franky nodded.
"So, you're saying we got to beat each one of you guys and then try every key on her handcuffs and that's the only way we're going to find the real one" Zoro said.
"What a stupid way to keep us busy" Sanji insulted. "While we're wasting time on your key hunting game, your chief is going to escape to those gates with Robin" he frowned.
"With how their chief acts, this seems like a befitting way for him to try and keep us all distracted" I huffed.
"That's exactly the plan, ugh, why can't I keep my mouth shut?" the man grumbled as he continued to kick himself even higher into the hair.
"Retrieving Robin is our first priority, if we focus on getting Robin back first, we can worry about the keys afterward" Nami said. "Let's just ignore that weirdo and start searching!" she huffed.
"Chapa! Chapapa! Hey, you got some brains" the man complimented. "But I'm afraid if you do that, then you'll leave me with no choice—I'll toss this key into the ocean! Chapapa!" he laughed. "We're kind enough to give you guys a sporting chance, see ya" and with that, he shot off.
"Hey, get back here!" Luffy shouted.
"Hold on, Luffy" Zoro said as he grabbed our captain's cheek which caused it to stretch the minute the raven-haired man started to run. "Will you just wait a second!" he snapped when Luffy continued to run in place with Sniper King quick to try and help in trying to keep the rubber man in place. "Stop running and listen to me! Let's decide what we're going to do before we split up!"
"Shut up! Just let me go!" Luffy snapped.
"Get a hold of yourself, Straw Hat!" Sniper King exclaimed.
"Zoro's right, if we're going to split up, it's best that we at least have somewhat of a plan" I said as I joined Sniper King in trying to coax the rubber man into stopping and settling down enough to listen to us.
"I'm guessing Lucci is that pigeon guy" Sanji said.
"Yeah, that's him" Franky nodded.
"From what that freak told us, he's the only one they got guarding Robin, our best bet is to send Luffy after him" Sanji said after a moment's thought. "Luffy, since you're eager to go, you can hunt down that pigeon guy" he said as he motioned for the rubber man to go on ahead.
"Let me go! Let me go!" Luffy impatiently demanded.
"Excluding Luffy, we have a head count of seven and there are seven CP9 agents with keys, so I say we spread out, take them down and catch up with Luffy" Sanji suggested.
"If they drag her across those gates, we'll never get her back" Sniper King said. "It's a race against time!" he declared.
"Then let's get going" Zoro said as he finally let go of Luffy which caused me to quickly jump back and out of the way as the raven-haired man mowed down Sniper King and ran on ahead. "Take them down or we die trying" he said.
"Yeah!" we all nodded before we took off.
"Good luck!" Chimney waved.
-Later-
I rushed down the long hallway, checking every room I passed by in hopes of finding one of those CP9 agents. My main objective was simple, find one, beat them and get the key, then go meet up with Luffy and the others. But...it felt like the whole area was just deserted—like there wasn't a single soul in sight as everything was so eerily silent and there wasn't a single sign of movement to be heard coming from any of the rooms that I would run past. I wonder if the others were in the same situation or had they been able to easily find what they needed? I didn't get to dwell on it for too long as I came to a sudden halt, my ears perking up to a sudden noise that happened to come from one of the nearby rooms.
I didn't hesitate or take any caution as I grabbed the handle to the door and threw it open—letting it swing back and smash into the stone wall as I barged right into the room, not wanting to waste any time in getting the key. With one step, I was inside as the door slowly swung itself shut behind me. Taking one look around the room, it wasn't hard for me to determine that the room before me was most likely used for training, it was spacious but had some equipment pushed off to the side. Mainly guns and swords which were the main weapons that the Marines were known to use. But...the room wasn't really all that interesting to begin with, in fact, the one thing to catch my interest in the room wasn't the equipment but the sole person inside it who sat near the back wall.
He was a strapping young man whose blond hair fell in waves in front of his face and I couldn't help but just shiver at the harsh glare he sent my way the moment we locked eyes. Warily did I eye the sword that was propped up against the wall beside him.
"Skylar!" he seemed to just brighten up the moment he said my name as he properly lifted his head. "It's been so long, how have you been?" he wore a smile that didn't quite match the obvious hatred and betrayal in his eyes. His voice also seemed to just put me on edge—it was just so smooth and kind and familiar, but a bit deeper from how I remembered it.
"I-I'm sorry, h-have we met before?" I stuttered out as already I could feel a nervous sweat building up on my forehead, my eyes quick to avert down towards the ground as I felt a knot in my stomach. I couldn't face him, I couldn't look him in the eyes—why did he have to be the agent I ran into?
"Come on now, I doubt you would ever forget me" his smile seemed to become strained. "What woman forgets all about her fiancé?" he asked as that smile of his finally fell and drew back into a snarl as his eyes narrowed into a venomous glare.
"Eh?" I tensed at his words, memories already flooding back into my mind.
-Flashback-
"Skylar, sweetheart, come down here! There's someone mommy and daddy wants you to meet!" Silvia shouted up the stairs, but despite the sweet words, it was obvious to both the guests and Varen that the woman was drunk based on how slurred her speech almost sounded. Her blonde hair and dress were nothing short of a mess while her cheeks were tinted a vibrant pink. Varen only rolled his eyes as he watched his wife tilt her head back and chug the rest of the drink in her hand, shaking the glass towards a nearby servant once she realized it was empty. "More wine!"
"Yes, ma'am!" the servant nodded, rushing off to retrieve the wine bottle from the kitchen as Silvia took a seat on the couch beside her husband. Leaning back in an improper fashion—it was obvious she never came from a noble family, but the guests kept their lips sealed. Who were they to judge who the Admiral loved? Certainly not them if they wished to stay in the man's favor.
"There she is, my darling little girl!" the words came tumbling out of Silvia's mouth in such a sickly-sweet way that it made everyone in the room that wasn't Varen uncomfortable. But again, they all kept their mouths shut—refusing to make any remarks or comments that may upset the man that sat across from them. Instead, they looked over towards the young five-year-old that had come down the stairs. She was dressed in such a lovely white dress, hair pinned back and face caked with makeup. Not to make her look presentable, but to hide the bruise on her cheek from the guests so that they wouldn't pry or question where she had gotten such a nasty mark from.
"Skylar, come meet Mr. and Mrs. Morris and their son, Zach" Varen calmly said. "Mr. Morris, this is my youngest daughter and future successor" he calmly greeted as he motioned with one hand towards the brunette.
"So, this little beauty is the one taking over when it's time?" Mr. Morris questioned as he peered down at the child, taking note in just how...small she was for someone her age as if she wasn't getting the proper nutrients or treatment that would allow her to grow. "Never expected you to pick such a dainty little thing when you have two strapping young boys who would fit the role much better" he said, though he knew his words were nothing but a lie—he's seen the man's sons before, they were just as uncomfortably small as the brunette, he was also aware how the youngest son was also quite prone to sickness.
"Ah yes, that's what most people's reactions are" Varen nodded. "But, I feel like we can move forward with this push against the common roles of society—women are no stranger to the Marines, what's wrong with a woman being an Admiral?" he asked as he then began to tick off a list of many strong women that have taken the world by storm with how quickly they climbed the ranks of the Marines and landed themselves in high ranking positions.
"Nothing, I guess—such progressive thinking you have there" Mr. Morris smiled though it was a little strained as he found himself once more casting a glance at the young girl who kept silent, her hands folded in front of her and her head bowed just the slightest bit as if she couldn't find the strength to keep her head held high. But, Varen didn't really believe in the words he spoke himself—why should he? They were nothing more than sugar-coated lies that helped in keeping up his image, that helped in keeping up the false narrative that him choosing his youngest daughter wasn't his desperate attempt to keep his position as Admiral for as long as he could before he had to pass it onto her.
"Why do you think they wanted Skylar to meet those people?" Sora quietly whispered to Cloud as they both hid up at the top of the stairs.
"Shush! Be quiet!" Cloud shushed, lighting scolding the brunet in an attempt to keep him quiet as he peered past the railings and down at the living room where all the adults were currently gathered. He didn't like this, he never liked when his father had company over because there was always a fear in the back of his head that the guests will be just as cruel as his parents and if that was the case...he rather they never get too close to either of his siblings.
"It's nice to meet you" Skylar finally curtsy before the couple and their son the moment she knew she was allowed to speak—keeping her head down as she ignored the way the blond-headed boy seemed to just eye her in curiosity. He looked to be around the same age as Cloud and was dressed sharply like most noble children were—he was a bit tall for his age which was something his parents always loved to brag about as they would tell those around them how it's a sign in their eyes that he'll grow up to be such a strapping Marine.
"Skylar, Zach here is also planning on joining the Marines, just like your brothers and you" Varen said, leaning back on the couch as the servant from before finally returned with the wine Silvia had requested. Quickly did they refill the glass she held up, being mindful to steady their hand and not let a single drop spill as they carefully filled the glass all the way to the top like how the blonde liked it. Skylar winced at the sight, she didn't like it when her mother was drunk because then the words became crueler and almost more personal. "As you know, most women that come from a higher status are engaged to other people from a higher status—you are no different, even if you are destined to become a Marine Admiral, you are still going to be married off to another man. Mr. Morris is a good friend of mine, and after discussing it, we came to an agreement.
"A future Admiral such as yourself should marry a future Marine" he said, and though his words sounded like something a caring father that knew what was best for his darling little girl would say. Skylar knew better as her body seemed to tense up right away, now becoming afraid of where this conversation was going. "You and Zach will be married off to one another on your sixteenth birthday, the age of consent."
"What?! I'm not going to marry him!" everyone in the room grew silent at this sudden outburst—surprised that the tiny little whelp suddenly dared to bark back at the big bad wolf of the room that nearly had everyone on their toes with just his mere presence. Skylar may have been young, but she understood what was being said made her feel like something important was being unfairly ripped away from her. Like a decision that she should have been able to make on her own was grabbed and forcefully taken from her grasp without her consent. She knew she had to marry, it was almost a common law for young noblewomen to be married off in their young teens—but, usually, the choice wasn't made until the young girl reached puberty. A dark look crossed Varen's face the moment the outburst reached his ears.
He didn't care that she disagreed for he didn't even care about the marriage itself, he only cared about how rude and embarrassing it was for her to speak out like that towards him in front of his guests.
"Something a matter? This was arranged by Mr. and Mrs. Morris and me months ago, we wanted to secure this as quickly as possible before more suitors showed up" the Admiral calmly spoke. Indeed, he knew why the couple across from him was quick to ask for an arranged marriage despite his daughter only being five—they wanted to make sure their son was married to someone that would have a higher status ranking then him and let that power be shared amongst the two families. To be able to brag to other nobles that their son snagged a woman with a highly respectable position.
"Sorry..." was all Skylar muttered as she lowered her head once more, her voice low and nothing more than a mere whisper now as she wore such an ugly look on her face. A look of hatred and discontentment.
"Starting from this day forward, when it comes to physical training, you both will be training together" Varen said, not bothering with her half-assed apology. There were only a few more words exchanged between Varen and his guests as he ignored his drunk wife who laid against the side of the couch armrest and looked as if she was about ready to pass out. While the adults talked, Zach and Skylar only stared at one another—one with a calm and peaceful look on his face and the other with an emotionless expression but fire in her eyes. But...that fire slowly dimmed the minute the guests left and the door was swung shut as all the servants were quick to avert their gazes and look elsewhere. None of them wishing to watch what was about to take place.
"Insolent brat!" Varen sneered as he smacked the young girl across the face, not caring how the force of his hit was enough to knock her small body over as she instantly curled up into herself—her arms wrapping around her head as if she was trying to make herself appear even smaller than she already was.
"Wretched little whore doesn't know how to keep her mouth shut!" Silvia laughed from her spot on the couch. "I feel sorry for that young boy, having to marry such an ugly little thing when he grows up!" she snorted.
"You know better than to speak out like that! Such a disgraceful and abhorrent thing for a young lady such as yourself to do!" Varen snarled. "Almost embarrassing me in front of my guests, after how I've been forced to talk about how well-mannered you are to them these past couple of months!" he snapped, annoyed at how her little moment of rebellion had almost painted him a liar to his guests. He had an image he needed to keep, he had a facade that mustn't be broken—he knew how much those of wealth feed on gossip just as must as the filthy commoners in the poorer sections of the island did.
"I'm sorry" Skylar whimpered, now repeating the words over and over and over as she just kept trying her best to curl up into a ball and disappear, tried her best to make herself appear so small and tiny so that he wouldn't hurt her anymore—believing that if she made herself appear insignificant than he'd stop. Cloud and Sora were quick to react as they came barreling down the stairs. Sora rushing to his twin's side and protectively warping himself around her while Cloud took a protective stance in front of the two, glaring up at the older brunet.
"If you will not marry Zach, I can easily find someone else—you are a young lady that comes from noble blood, it would look horrible if you didn't marry once you've reached the age of consent like other young noblewomen" Varen darkly muttered. "If I must, I will not hesitate to ask Vice Admiral Garp if I can arrange a marriage between you and his grandson!" he snapped.
"No!" Silvia gasped. "I don't want that man's bloodline mixing with ours, I've heard rumors of how crazy that family is—they're genes won't save this family's beauty!" she howled, throwing her arm over her eyes in a dramatic way. She was such a vain woman, only caring about beauty...it was that vanity that made her so desperately despise her own children as none of them fit the standards of her beauty.
"Doesn't matter what you want, whore!" Varen angrily snapped at the blonde.
"Fuck you too, bastard!" Silvia snarled before tossing her head back and chugging the rest of her wine. Varen only rolled his eyes at the sight before looking back down at his children, a look of disgust in his eyes.
"Doesn't matter, as long as the man you're marrying is destined to be a Marine" he bitterly muttered. "So, I suggest you suck it up and deal with it—you will be training with him and spending an hour each week with Zach so you two can become acquainted with one another. He is your fiancé and I expect you two to get along...or at least tolerate each other."
-End of Flashback-
"Z-Zach, so nice to see you a-again" I stuttered, breathing becoming a little heavy as I felt like I was now almost on the verge of a panic attack at the memory of that day. "W-what are you doing h-here? There's no w-way you could have gotten this h-high up in the Marines at you're a-age" I said in disbelief as I eyed him warily.
"Well, let's just say that your father had some connections—I was trained alongside the other CP9 members and became a proudful member, but I know you knew this seeing how I used to brag about it all the time" Zach grinned before his lips pulled back into a snarl once more. "I think the real question is, why are you with those pirates?" he stood up, taking hold of his sword as he did so.
"That's...that's really none of your business" I grounded out through clenched teeth as my hand automatically reaching for my own swords—drawing them quickly the moment I saw him rush towards me and swung his sword downwards.
"You sure? As your fiancé, I'm pretty sure it's my concern" he sneered as our swords clashed and his face got uncomfortably close to mine.
