Sonic sat quietly in the kitchen watching the tv from over the counter he sat at, he was having breakfast while keeping an eye out for anything interesting happening on the news but finding nothing he looked back down at his bacon and eggs with a bored expression.
"Nothing happening again." he sighed, poking at the eggs, making the yoke break and ooze yellow onto his plate. "I just wish something would happen."
Suddenly a knock sounded at the door making him jolt in surprise, confused he turned off the tv and jumped down off the stool where he walked to the door, the knocking got harder and it made him slightly nervous as he reached for the knob, ears twitching slightly he took hold of the door knob and opened the door but he nearly jumped out of his skin seeing a familiar purplish gray crystal hedgehog who looked similar to Shadow.
"Mephiles?!" Sonic exclaimed, backing away in shock. "How are you still alive?"
"I'm immortal Sonic." Mephiles hissed, stepping into the house making Sonic back up some more. "And I'm here to get revenge on your foolishness."
"Hey it's not my fault you were joining up with Iblis to destroy the world." Sonic accused. "It's your own fault for messing with us in the first place!"
"Oh quite the opposite." Mephiles waved off, slamming the door closed ensuring Sonic was trapped. "It was your mistake for coming across me."
"Wanna bet?" Sonic tried but paused feeling something travel up his legs and around his waist up to his chest where it stopped over his shoulders and down the length of his arms, face going pale he looked down to see some dark shadowy substance around him and keeping him in place but he struggled anyway only to have the stuff tighten. "What the-"
"It is pointless to struggle." Mephiles said, walking closer with his hand raised. "The more you fight the more it will hurt."
Sonic pinned his ears in frustration before struggling even harder only to have the substance tighten even more with every movement he made till he finally stopped and gasped desperately for air.
"W-what do you w-want?" Sonic asked through strangled breaths.
"I want revenge on you, Shadow and that future hedgehog Silver." Mephiles answered, circling the blue hedgehog. "But first I will destroy you and this time I will make sure you are dead."
Sonic stared at Mephiles angrily. "I'm not afraid of you." he hissed, standing his ground.
"No?" Mephiles queried, suddenly appearing right in front of Sonic and putting a sharp claw under his jaw. "Well, then explain why you are trembling."
Sonic paused and realized he was trembling and violently too, probably due to Mephiles appearing in front of him all the sudden. "I won't say a word."
"Then pain will be your new friend." Mephiles replied calmly.
"You better leave me alone or.." Sonic trailed off, feeling it tighten even more.
"I'd watch it if I were you." Mephiles growled, pressing the claw against Sonic's throat a bit more causing him to tense. "I could kill you right now."
"Then why don't you?" Sonic asked, staring at him.
"Because I want you to have a slow and torturous death." Mephiles answered, eyes narrowing. "You will pay for coming back and destroying my plans."
"I regret nothing." Sonic snapped. "And I will spoil your plans again if I have to."
"You will be dead before you get the chance." Mephiles snarled, releasing his grip causing Sonic to stagger back free from the substance. "And I will make sure of it."
Sonic backed away from the crystal hedgehog who stalked towards him, but he accidentally tripped making him fall to the floor, Mephiles then lunged at him and pinned the blue hedgehog down with surprising strength.
"Let go." Sonic ordered, struggling to get up only to have sharp crystal-like claws dig into his shoulders.
"All you mortals are alike, so naive and pitfully stupid." Mephiles hissed, his voice dripping with venom. "And I will show you true pain."
Sonic pinned his ears in defiance and tried to push Mephiles away but it was no use, Mephiles pulled a hand away before slashing his claws at Sonic's neck/chest making him jerk and gasp in pain.
Sonic quickly put his hands on the new wound, feeling blood pool out staining his blue fur and causing him to gag from the pain on his neck.
"Now prepare to meet your doom." Mephiles said, standing up and reaching out a hand towards Sonic who watched from the floor as Mephiles' hand started to glow.
Sonic kept a hold of his wound in pain as Mephiles sent a shock wave towards his heart but right before he could hit him Sonic vanished.
Mephiles looked around in confusion but Sonic was nowhere to be seen, growling in irritation he turned around and listened close for any sound, suddenly he was tripped causing him to fall to the floor with a thud, now very angry he got back up and looked down to see a shadow moving away from him, he watched it for a minute in vague interest till a figure suddenly emerged from that shadow and he took a step back in shock for there struggling to stay standing was Sonic gasping for air.
Now completely enraged Mephiles lunged at Sonic who jumped away only to have claws wrap around his neck and yank him back, he then threw Sonic against the wall making a large dent there, Sonic yelped and fell to the floor in a heap.
"How did you do that?" Mephiles hissed, storming towards Sonic who struggled to his hands and knees where he put a hand back on his wound that was pooling even more. "How!?"
Sonic shook his head and slowly looked up at Mephiles. "D-do what creep?" Sonic snipped, ears folding back again.
Mephiles roared in fury and punched Sonic hard in the face causing him to fly backward and hit the wall again, he then grabbed the blue hedgehog by the throat and lifted him into the air making Sonic gasp and kick as his hands clutched Mephiles' wrist trying to free himself.
"Tell me now!" Mephiles demanded, tightening his grip.
"I-it's j-just.. Argh.." Sonic panted, trying to pull free. "C-can't s-say.."
"How did you turn into a shadow?!" Mephiles shouted, digging his claws into the back of Sonic's neck.
"It's my power!" Sonic shrieked, pained tears coming to his eyes. "I-it's m-my f-fathers power.. p-pa-passed down to m-me.."
Mephiles froze at that and stared at Sonic for a minute before his red and green eyes flickered in anger. "You liar!" he roared, slamming Sonic against the wall where he pinned him. "You have no such power! It does not belong to you!"
"I-it does too!" Sonic snapped back. "It's m-mine b-because I-I got it from m-my father!"
"That's impossible!"
"W-why?!" Sonic demanded.
"Because shadow powers are mine." Mephiles snarled.
Sonic stared at him in shock before his expression shifted to one of horror and distress. "N-no.. th-that can't be r-right."
"It is not real, you are just trying to save your sorry hide." Mephiles decided, tightening his grip. "And you will die for your lies."
"Th-then kill me.. I-I won't s-stop you." Sonic muttered, lowering his gaze.
Mephiles' eyes narrowed and he lifted his clawed hand to shred the blue hedgehog's belly open but he paused feeling something familiar brush against his hand, ears twitching slightly he looked up at Sonic to see a faint mist flowing around the hedgehog's hands that held onto his wrist, getting slightly drawn in he moved his free hand to Sonic's blood stained ones and he quietly twirled a finger in the mist allowing it to seep in.
'Why does this mist seem so familiar?' Mephiles thought to himself.
-flashback-
Mephiles stood quietly in the nursery watching a young hoglet that was barely a year old, it was so small and helpless laying there in the crib staring up at him in wonder.
"Hello little one." Mephiles greeted, putting a finger near the hoglet who took it in his tiny little blue paws before sucking on it like the baby he was.
"Are you bothering him during naptime again?" a sweet voice asked from behind.
Mephiles gently pulled his finger away before turning to face a light blue hedgehog who crossed her arms. "Why of course not." he lied, stepping aside. "I was just about to put him to sleep."
"Yes, well maybe I should take over this time." she smiled, walking over and picking the crying hoglet up. "Aw, the poor little thing."
"Not judging your parenting skills but I think he likes me putting him to bed better." Mephiles chuckled lightly, reaching over to the hoglet.
"Alright, go ahead and show off." she teased, handing the hoglet to Mephiles who held him in his arms.
Mephiles smiled slightly and gently stroked the hoglet's head as his hand glowed a bit causing the tiny thing to calm down and relax in his arms, the mist that was forming around the upset hoglet was also absorbed into Mephiles' hand at the same time.
The light blue hedgehog got closer and hummed softly to the hoglet Mephiles still held, and soon the baby fell fast asleep in their team effort.
"And now he is asleep." Mephiles announced quietly, setting the hoglet back in the crib.
"Sometimes it is handy to have a husband who can make a sobbing hoglet fall asleep." the light blue hedgehog smiled.
"Is that all I'm here for?" Mephiles raised a brow, looking at her.
"Did I say that?" she asked, thinking for a moment. "Well it is nice to have a hoglet who doesn't wake up crying in the middle of the night but that is not why you are here."
"Hmm.." Mephiles went towards her before taking the light blue hand and putting a hand on her cheek. "That is what I thought."
"Now we are even." she smiled.
"Not quite Layla." Mephiles shook his head before looking straight into her lavender eyes, he then got closer and lifted her head up a bit where he gave her a kiss. "Now we are even." he whispered once he pulled away a bit.
"You are tough and ruthless to everyone but to me you are the kindest and most loyal person in the world." Layla whispered back before wrapping her arms around his neck and returning the kiss.
Suddenly a knock sounded from downstairs alerting them both, confused they looked over at the baby noticing it was stirring, irritated Mephiles left the room to find out who was knocking, and with a slight growl he opened and swung the door open but he froze seeing a bunch of people waiting weapons in hand.
"Project Solaris by order of the Duke of Soleanna you are to come back with us immediately." the leader of them announced.
"The Duke is foolish to think I will ever return." Mephiles hissed. "And if you mortals have any common sense then you will leave here and never return."
"I'm afraid we can't do that." the leader sighed, taking out a gun and shooting Mephiles before he could move.
The bullet hit him in the shoulder sending him backward where he fell to the floor in pain, quickly he rolled over and looked to see it wasn't a bullet at all it was some sort of chip that attached itself on and electrified him making him collapse gasping for air as his body twitched from the pain.
"Alright take him away." the leader ordered.
Quickly they went over and took hold of Mephiles before dragging him out of there.
"Mephiles!" Layla cried, hurrying outside and attacking the ones who were holding the gray hedgehog up. "Let him go!"
Suddenly Layla was knocked back and she fell to the ground with a thump, Mephiles roared in fury and broke free of the grip before hurrying over to Layla and lifting her shoulders up off the ground.
"Layla?" Mephiles asked, holding her up with one arm as he put his other hand behind her head keeping her supported but he noticed blood was pooling from the side of her head due to a fatal blow. "Layla please answer me."
Layla slowly opened her eyes and looked up at him as tears slipped down her cheeks. "I-I'm s-sorry.. I-I tried.." she whispered, her body getting weaker. "B-but.. I-I.. l-lo-love y-y.." she trailed off going completely limp as her head turned to the side where she leaned against his arm.
Mephiles stared in horror as Layla stared into space, her face going pale. "Layla.. Layla please no.. no.." he pleaded, tears slipping down his face. "Please.. Don't go.."
Hearing the people behind him he slowly looked up the whites of his eyes shifting to deep red and his pupils going into slits, ears folding back he gently set his now lifeless wife down in the grass before standing up his whole form quivering in anger as he closed his eyes.
"You killed her.." Mephiles growled, his color flickering from pale gray and green to dark purple and crystalish. "You killed my precious light.. Now.. now there will be only darkness."
With that he whirled around and stretched his hands out where he shot large shockwave at them killing more than half, he then lifted into the air his mouth vanishing from sight along with his nose making him look more frightening as the red of his eyes gave off the illusion of being cracked.
"Now nothing will survive my wrath!" he shouted, getting ready to kill the rest.
But before he could do anything pain exploded through his shoulder to the rest of him forcing his body to shut down making him fall to the ground unconscious and weakened.
-present day-
Mephiles shook his head from the memory and returning to reality he looked back up at Sonic who was still pinned there taking in short and ragged breaths as blood continued to flow and stain his fur.
"It is you.." Mephiles mumbled, staring at Sonic in a daze. "Your.. you're alive."
"H-huh?" Sonic murmured, lifting his head slightly only to have it drop again getting rather dizzy.
"You are hurt." Mephiles noted, looking Sonic over before remembering what happened. "What have I done?"
"W-wha y-ou t-talk b-bout.." Sonic slurred, his body going limp. "
Mephiles pinned his ears and loosened his grip before lowering the blue hedgehog to the floor where he knelt down in front of Sonic who stared at the blood pooling on the floor.
"Sonic.." Mephiles whispered, putting a hand under Sonic's chin and tilting his head up where he was forced to meet the unnerving gaze.
"n-no t-touch.." Sonic weakly tried to pull away.
"You need help." Mephiles said, moving Sonic's head to the side where he lifted his hand to the wounds on Sonic's shoulder down to his chest dangerously close to his neck.
Sonic hissed in pain as the fingers brushed against his wound.
Mephiles glanced around before quickly turning into a shadow that went to another room and when he returned he had a cloth in hand, he then knelt back down in front of Sonic where he put a hand behind the blue hedgehog's back and pressed the cloth to Sonic's wound wiping the blood away, once done with that he set the cloth down before putting his hand up against the claw wounds making the hedgehog squirm a bit in discomfort.
"Don't move." Mephiles warned, watching as a dark purple mist flowed from his hand and into the wounds.
Sonic gasped in pain as he felt a strange sensation go through the injuries around his body, it was painful but also soothing at the same time making his senses get mixed up and confused, but from all the blood loss he felt himself get more and more dizzy.
Mephiles watched as all the wounds healed over and once finished he looked at Sonic who was still breathing hard in a slight panic, with a sigh he pulled Sonic closer ignoring his struggles against it, now holding Sonic close in his arms he started stroking the blue quills of the weakened hedgehog who squirmed a bit trying to get away.
"Shh, calm down." Mephiles cooed in the softest voice he could muster.
Sonic was shocked by this and all the surprises weren't making his state any better, he stared up at Mephiles in confusion but noticed he was getting quite tired for some reason, slowly his eyes started drifting shut and letting out a slight moan his head fell to the side where he leaned up against Mephiles who watched him fall fast asleep.
"That's better." Mephiles nodded slightly in satisfaction. "I see you never really changed." he mused, observing the blue hedgehog. "You still fall asleep just as easily as when you were a hoglet."
Carefully he picked Sonic up and carried him to the living room where he sat down on the couch, and keeping Sonic close he gently pet the blue hedgehog's head in a soothing manner, Sonic shivered slightly and curled up against the crystal hedgehog.
"Don't worry Sonic, I won't let anything happen to you." Mephiles whispered. "And I will do anything to make sure you are safe." he promised darkly, his eyes flaring a bit in a protectiveness he had not felt in a long time. "You are my little one and I will protect you no matter what."
