Chapter 3: An Unexpected Encounter
A few moments earlier
Danny was between a rock and a hard place right now.
Earlier his ghost sense went off and he left to go deal with whatever spook that was causing trouble, which was Skulker and even earlier today, he dealt with another ghost. It was Klemper, who was looking for "friends" again. It took Danny over ten minutes to deal with that pest, before he could capture him in the thermos but it resulted in him being late to school again.
And now, he already dealt with Skulker, but he thankfully managed to get rid of him.
After that, he tried to find a place to change back and meet up with his friends again before class...only to run into one of his classmates again.
"Please tell me she didn't see anything!..." Danny thought, hoping that he didn't just blow his own cover of secretly being Amity Park's ghostly superhero in front of one of his classmates.
He didn't want to deal with another "reality gauntlet" incident!
Mia was now looking at the source of the noise that distracted her from her broken heart, even if just for a moment. She blinked in surprise, while Danny Fenton was sweating bullets and worriedly wondered if she saw him transform or not.
"When did he get in there?..." She asked in her mind, surprised to see Dash's usual target here.
Danny finally stopped wondering but noticed Mia staring at him. He gulped.
Present Time
"Uh... hi?..." Danny went nervously, while Mia's brow furrowed and she got angry.
"Get lost, Fenton! I have better things to be worried about than why you're here!..." Mia snapped.
Danny blinked at that hostile response but mentally let out a breath of relief that his secret double life is still safe and sound at the moment.
"Okay, good news, she didn't see me transform. Bad news, she's the typical A-Lister with the matching attitude and is clearly not in the mood to be disturbed right now..." Danny thought, while the A-List girl kept berating him.
"Didn't you hear me? Get lost! I want to be left alone!..."Mia snapped, not wanting Danny to know that she had just been crying her eyes out.
She was losing her patience while fighting back the water that was starting to build up within her eyes, which she tried to hide with her anger.
The ghost boy, unaware of what she was feeling right now, just frowned and didn't like this attitude from her and since he already had been on edge due to fighting ghosts and getting detention for being late again, he was in a bad mood too.
"Geez...with an attitude like that, I'm amazed you're not more popular with boys..." Danny snarked in response to her attitude.
Before he could go, Mia then broke into tears, and it shocked the ghost boy to be honest. Danny stood there, watching her cry as she buried her head under her arms. Feeling a bit awkward, he walked closer towards the crying teenage girl and lightly patted her shoulder.
"Uh... sorry?..."Danny said, worried what he said hurt her feelings.
Mia pushed his hand away with her shoulder.
"That's not what I'm upset about! And I don't need you of all people to pity me!..." She snapped, but she kept crying and tried to hide her tears.
The ghost boy was bewildered and was feeling worried right now.
"What happened?..." Danny asked, now genuinely curious about what caused Mia to break down in tears like this.
"Like I'd tell you, Fenton..." Mia grumbled in a bitter tone, looking away from him.
The ghost boy knew she was upset and couldn't help but ask and see how she was.
"Seriously, what wrong?..." Danny asked, not liking her behavior but also knowing she must be going through something bad.
He was trying to help Mia by offering an ear for her borrow over whatever her problem was. Mia sniffled, surprised to see him try to be sympathetic to her, before she scowled and looked away.
"I said get lost, Fenton! I don't need you catching me on the rebound!..."She said, assuming this was his way to flirt with her since she's one of the popular teens in their class.
"I'm not-..." Danny's ghost sense went off, grateful she wasn't looking. "Uh...I guess not." He said before taking off.
Mia turned her head, surprised that, unlike Tucker Foley, he wasn't trying to hit on her.
"That was...unexpected..." She said but the dark-haired boy kept trying to be careful and not say something that would make her feel worse.
"Well...if you really don't want to talk...then I guess that means I'm leaving. I won't force you to shout out or complain about whatever might be bothering you in the first place..." Danny said, feeling bad about leaving her like this but he had to go deal with a ghost.
Mia just glared at him and simply spoke out of her own personal frustration.
"Yeah...well...all you guys are the same anyway. Running off before a girl gets serious!..."She said in a harsh voice, taking her anger out on him.
"Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed..." Danny muttered, unable to help it as he was worried as he tried to spot where the ghost was.
"What was that?!..."Mia snapped, glaring at him.
Danny wanted to say something and excuse himself, but he heard an obnoxious "Beware" from a distance and he sighed, as he already figured out who it was and didn't feel the need to put up his full guard against the Box Ghost.
"False alarm. It's just the Box Ghost...again. This is like the 5th time this week..."He thought, seeing that there was no real danger here since it's just the box ghost.
"After I just finished dealing with Skulker and Klemper today, I'm not really in the mood to deal with the Box Ghost on the same day..." Danny thought, as he quickly pulls out his cellphone.
"Maybe It'd probably be easier to text Jazz, Sam and Tucker to handle the Box Ghost? I'm sure they can handle him without me..." He mentally added before turning his attention back to the popular teen girl who was still trying hard not to cry again.
He then heard Mia clear her throat, seeing her with arms crossed and tapping her foot impatiently.
"Um...excuse me?! Who said you can ignore me while I'm yelling at you!..."She snapped, thinking Danny was deliberatly ignoring her.
Danny wanted to leave but Mia kept being difficult.
"Well? What are you waiting for? If you're going to leave, then just leave!..."She said, glaring at him.
"Fine, I will!..."Danny said, already annoyed with her.
Unfortunately, Mia broke down crying again and Danny felt bad now.
"Okay, she's seriously having a bad day. I definitely know what it's like to have a REALLY bad day. And if I leave her like this, who knows what she'll do..."The ghost boy thought, feeling a little guilty for being so harsh.
So, he decided to try and offer to hear out whatever is bothering her again. The ghost boy tried to be careful with his words as he spoke again.
"Look...uh..."Danny paused, not sure what her name was again.
"Mia..."The girl said in between her sobs.
"Right. Mia...look...I can see your having a bad day. If you want to talk to someone about it, I don't have anything else planned right now...so I'm willing to listen..." Danny offered, trying to be gentle.
Mia sent him a glare, but the memories of her now ex-boyfriend made her cry more and she was too sad to even be angry right now. She was still a bit hesitate to fully drop her guard around him, but Mia honestly did need someone to hear out her problems and she knew her fellow popular friends would either not really care or make fun of her.
So, she figured she could settle for Fenton to talk to right now, since she doubted, anyone would listen to him if spoke about this to anyone.
"It's a long story..." Mia said, not really wanting to talk but also not wanting to be alone right now.
"I got time..."Danny said, as he noticed that she seemed less angry now, but she was still obviously upset and hurt about something.
"She's less hostile now. But she still has those tear stains on her face though..." Danny thought, as he reaches for his pocket and pulled out a clean light blue handkerchief and offered it to Mia.
"Here, I think you need this more than I do right now..." Danny said, as he handed the handkerchief to the tear-stained teen girl.
While Mia was caught off guard again as she reached out to grab the light blue handkerchief that the half ghost boy offered her. Mia took it and looked at it curiously, before looking at the unpopular boy again.
"Thanks..."She said as she wiped her face a bit and tried to regain some of her own composure, if only a bit.
"So, what happened?..." Danny asked, as the girl sighed and complied.
"Alright, but before I say anything. You need to promise not to speak a single word of this to anyone inside or outside of school, got it?..." Mia said with stern tone in her voice, figuring she needed to tell SOMEONE and he was the closest one here.
"My lips are sealed..." Danny responded by making a closing zipper gesture across his mouth.
"Also, if I hear even a small snicker from you, then I swear that I'm gonna kick you where the sun doesn't shine. Is that clear, Fenton?..." Mia asked with a glare in her eyes.
"I swear that I won't laugh. I'm just here to offer a listening ear..." Danny promised, while Mia let out sigh as she pulls herself together before explaining everything to him.
"Okay...well...it was like this..."Mia began to tell him what happened.
She began to tell Danny about all her troubles today, before starting off from what happened this morning to what she discovered just minutes before the two of these teens met each other here.
Later
Mia already told him her sob story and even got to the part that made her blood boil the most. The part where Chet had cheated on her and how she ran away with a broken heart because of it.
"And then he had the nerve to say the most cliche thing ever to me "IT'S NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE" and I...I can't...I just couldn't stand being around that PIG for a second longer...so I just run away!..." Mia said, covering her face.
Danny was appalled after hearing what she just said.
"Her boyfriend cheated on her?! No wonder she was in such an awful mood earlier! Anyone would be if they were in her place! Now I really do feel bad about almost brushing her off from earlier too..." Danny thought, feeling bad for her and tried his best to cheer her up.
"That was awful of him to do to you..." Danny said, feeling sorry for her.
"Yes, it was. How can Chet do this to me? I gave him almost a whole year of love and he repays me by cheating with Britanny? What the heck is his problem? What's worse is that I'm going to be a laughingstock once everyone else finds out? All because of that two timing PIG!..." Mia said between her sobs.
"Why would you be a laughingstock? If anything, Chet's reputation should be hurt because of what he did?..."Danny asked, not understanding.
"You know that the other A-Listers will just see this as another case of a football player playing the field...and I'm just the loser nobody who got tossed aside..."Mia said in between her cries.
"You're not a nobody, that jerk is!..."The ghost boy said, but she just kept crying.
"Yeah, but we all know Dash and his stupid friends are going to side with him..."Mia said, as she knew how the A-Lister football players are like.
Danny felt awful right now and he really wished he could say something to make her feel better.
He felt a little bit at a lost in this particular situation he found himself in with Mia but he still felt sorry for her and wanted to help her. However, he wasn't all that good at talking to girls, aside from Sam and Val, but Mia was clearing in pain, and he did want to help her.
"Come on, Fenton. Think. If you were ever in Mia's situation, what would you want to hear that might help cheer you up?..." Danny thought, as he tried to find some way to comfort her.
The ghost boy looked at the weeping girl and did his best to give her the kind of comfort he believed she needed.
"Well...uh...maybe this is for the best?..." Danny said, as he was trying to carefully think of what to say to help raise Mia's spirits up without coming off as too weird.
"Huh?..." Mia responded, as she turned her head to face Danny with some new tear stains across her face.
"How is it possible that being cheated on by my boyfriend is for the best?!..."She asked, being hostile again and Danny regretted how he worded it but tried to explain himself.
"What I mean is...maybe it's better that you found out that your ex-boyfriend is a cheating dirt bag now rather than later. I mean...if you didn't uncover that secret today, then Chet probably would've continued going behind your back without you knowing. Would you rather have that happen instead of founding out the truth today?..." Danny asked.
"...No..." Mia answered, as she wiped some tears away with one of her hands.
"And let's say...hypothetically speaking...you didn't find out...you probably would have continued to date Chet and maybe stay with him until you guys got married and had kids together. If you found out he was a cheater then, it would have been a million times worse than finding out now. So, it's better that you found out his true colors now when you still have the best years of your life ahead of you. Right?..."Danny asked, pointing out what could happen in that hypothetical future.
The popular girl blinked, as she considered what he just said.
"I...never considered that. I mean...I never really considered marriage since we are still in high school but...Chet probably would do something like that..."Mia said, since she thought about it.
Chet is a selfish guy, and he probably would never have come clean to her and would have continued lying and cheating on her if he thought he could get away with it. It made her angry and sick to know that, had she not caught him in the act, she would have blissfully continued dating that jerk and he'd continue to betray her like that.
"Then I'd say that you're better off knowing the truth and if you don't want to be with someone who would treat you this badly, then you're more than justified of dumping your ex however you see fit. I mean...that's how I see it at least..." Danny said, hoping he didn't talk her ear off with his own thoughts and opinions of her situation.
Mia was silent with a few minutes, before she raised head.
"I just can't believe that I ever fell for that loser. I feel so stupid..."Mia said, as the dark-haired boy continued to try and be sympathetic with her.
"Don't be. He's the one in the wrong. Not you..."Danny said.
Mia still seemed depressed as the ghost boy did his best to try and lift her spirits.
"Look, Chet is a jerk and he's a total creep who probably won't amount much after high school, just like Dash. You didn't deserve that. It's his loss if he thought that he could get away with trying to two time on his girlfriend..."Danny said, now viewing this Chet guy in a very dim light.
Even if Danny couldn't quite remember what this Chet guy looked like, the ghost boy just assumed that Chet might be one of Dash's football jock goons from the way Mia described him. Plus, if he was friends with Dash, then he obviously wasn't a nice guy.
Mia was surprised by what he said but appreciated it to be honest. Most guys who talked to her this long or were nice to her was solely because they wanted to hit on her, but Fenton here seemed to actually be listening to what she was saying and was even trying to cheer up without sounding all flirty or suave to get her attention.
She found herself at a loss.
"I...wasn't expecting to hear all that from you, Fenton..." Mia said, genuinely surprised by Danny's response to her problem.
"I just spoke what was on my mind, that's all..." Danny said, glad that he managed to keep her from shedding more tears over her ex at least.
Not even A-Listers deserve to go through that.
"T-Thanks...Fenton...uh...I mean D...Davie?..." Mia asked, sounding confused and Danny didn't seem all that bothered that she didn't remember his first name.
"It's Danny..." The ghost kid corrected, having been used to the popular teens not knowing his first name.
"Right...Danny...sorry..."Mia said, as she felt a little awkward at not remembering such a simple name.
"She seems to be feeling a little better now. That's good..."Danny thought, smiling a bit but his ghost sense went off again and he then noticed some flying hamburgers and chicken nearby, as well as the sound of some glass breaking, all of which Mia was oblivious as she kept wiping her tears away.
He sighed in annoyance.
"Darn it, the Box Ghost is here with the Lunch Lady this time. I guess that I really will have to deal with those older ghost couple...eww..." Danny thought, knowing he can't ignore them forever.
He tried to figure out how to excuse himself without coming off as insensitive. Just then, a potential escape showed up in the strangest way.
"Fenton, where are you?! That ghost attack made me lose my homework and you got to pay for that!..."Dash's angry voice was heard nearby.
Danny rolled his eyes.
"How is that my fault? As far as he knows, I wasn't even near that ghost fight..."He thought, before he turned to Mia, who was still in the midst of wiping away the tear stains on her face with his handkerchief again.
She felt a little better now after letting that all out, but she was still hurt. Even so, it had felt nice to actually talk to someone who actually listened and didn't make fun of her.
She heard Dash's yelling and turned to Danny with what could arguably be called a concerned look on her face, but the ghost boy sent her a reassuring look.
"I got to go, Mia. And remember, you don't need a jerk like Chet. I know we barely know each other but even now I can see you're too good for him. You'll find someone way better than him in no time. Just don't lose hope. Not all guys are cheating pigs like that..."Danny said in a gentle way, hoping his words helped her feel just a little bit better.
Mia blinked, surprised by his kindness but didn't dislike it to be honest.
"Thank you..."Mia said, still not sure how to process all of this.
"I better go. And don't worry, I won't tell anyone about what we talked about..."Danny said, as he got up and was about to leave.
"Uh...Fenton...wait...your handkerchief?..."Mia called out.
"Keep it. Anyway, I got to go before Dash finds me..." Danny said, before he quickly walked away to go deal with certain pests and avoid a certain jock bully who was in a bad mood.
He didn't know that Mia still had her eyes on him, almost like she was in shock or something.
Mia was still surprised that one of the least popular guys at school comforted her like that and actually sincerely listened to her troubles and didn't judge her or hit on her. It bothered her since Danny just seemed like a sort of enigma from what she understood about boys.
She wasn't sure how to react or process this scenario to be honest.
"Fenton is...different than I thought he was..."She thought, not sure how else to describe it.
The young girl just continued to stare, looking almost confused right now. He didn't try and flirt with her or catch her on the rebound. He just treated her like a person and actually listened to her problems and didn't judge her for them.
"He didn't hit on me...and yet he still helped me without expecting anything in return. That's a first..." Mia thought, not sure how to respond to that.
Knowing that the bell would ring soon, and the popular girl soon left, since she knew she had to get to class and find some way to recover from her breakup with Chet.
She would definitely get some serious payback from her now ex-boyfriend later. Right now, she needed to do some damage control and stop any unwanted gossip from happening against her...all the while, her mind couldn't help but occasionally go back to thinking about that nice guy Davie...I mean, Danny...who helped her out.
"It was weird...but it was a nice kind of weird...I guess..."She admitted, before she noticed that she was still holding on to his handkerchief in her hands, then pocketed it in her handbag without anyone noticing her doing so.
As she walked away, Dash spotted her.
"Hey Mia, you seen Fenton anywhere?..."Dash asked, sounding impatient.
Mia frowned, she almost told him to buzz off since she didn't want to deal with one of Chet's stupid friends but recalled that he was technically higher on the school's social hierarchy than she is and she couldn't afford to do that right now. She didn't want to respond to him, but thought fast since she did owe Fenton one for listening to her problems.
"I think I saw him head straight for the library..."Mia lied, as she pointed in the opposite direction where Danny went.
Dash grinned.
"Thanks..."The jock said as he went to go find his target.
Mia frowned and rolled her eyes.
"Jerk. He's just like Chet!..."She thought in anger, before she went to class.
All the while, trying hard not to cry again as well as making plans for revenge against her lying cheating, no good, dishonest and lousy EX-boyfriend

Here are my responses to your questions:
1) Not exactly.
2) I'm not sure.
3) I think Tucker would be a caring parent but would also rely on technology and gadgets to help with it like when he took care of that flour sake project.
4) Hard to say.
5) I think Sam could win if she had the right ghost hunting weapons.
Candy girl 98: Thanks for the suggestion. I will see what I can do.
CMR Rosa: Thank you and I understand your point, but we will see more about Mia and her friends as characters during the story.
