Review Responses:
Shadow5: Don't worry, I'm not dropping the story. It's just that my job takes up a lot of my time now.
ShieldBuckle and CoatiMagico: Mario may become the new Spear Hero and would make a great one—much better than Motoyasu.
To the guest replying to CoatiMagico: Yes, legendary weapons can't be separated from their wielders in the canon. But that's the joy of fanfiction: to create something different from the canon.
Example: A Doom and ROTSH crossover where the Doom Slayer is the Shield Hero. He uses his tech to separate himself from the Shield so he can use his guns. Who's to say something similar can't happen here?
And Mario has been able to create miracles before. So it's possible his essence can make another, such as giving the Spear a redo. Still, I respect that you respect the canon of ROTSH.
Marshman101: Thanks for the support. I'm glad you like my story.
T.V. 2000: Thanks for the review. While it was unexpected for Luigi and Mario to go straight to saving Lurolona, it's not out of character. Mario and Luigi are natural heroes, saving many people in their past adventures. So, it would make sense that they would go straight to saving Raphtalia and Rifana's friends after hearing their pleas.
As for Aultcray, yeah, I agree. Aultcray actions have driven him far past the point of redemption. And when our SuperStars hear his story, they may sympathize with him but won't excuse him. After all, he basically did the same thing to all the demi-humans in Lurolona.
As for Ren and Itsuki, having Mario and Luigi be there and showing what a real hero does will help their growth exponentially. After all, they are children, and having a proper role model to look up to can improve their character. So, expect them both to be better in this story.
And I plan for our SuperStars to explore some of the other countries, especially Siltvelt and Shieldfreeden.
Stark Redmoon: We'll have to wait and see what happens with the Spear.
Chapter 5: The Shield Team
It had gotten late, and most of the villagers of Lurolona were turning in for the night. The rest of the work restoring the village went smoothly, thanks to Mario and Luigi fixing all the buildings. If they keep this pace, Lurolona will return to normal within a few days. Peach and Daisy were discussing where they would sleep tonight while Rifana and Raphtalia were waiting at the entrance to the village.
"What's wrong?" Keel asked.
"It's been so long," Rifana said.
"They should have been back by now," Raphtalia added.
"Damn it! I knew they shouldn't have gone with the knights. That racist bastard must have done something to them. We need to help them!"
"Relax," Peach said as she placed a hand on Keel's head. "Have faith in them."
"So, girls," Daisy said, getting Raphtalia's and Rifana's attention. "Since Luigi and I have adopted you two, I thought we could sleep in the same house. Like a family."
The two girls perked up at hearing this.
"Oh, okay. I think that's a great idea." Raphtalia said.
"We should stay in Raphtalia's house. It's bigger than mine." Rifana added.
"Sounds like a plan," Daisy said with a smile.
While this was happening, Keel watched them. He was glad his friends were safe but a bit envious that the Shield Hero and his girlfriend had adopted them. Peach noticed this and had an idea of what to do. But as Peach thought about her idea, she saw something in the distance. She smiled when she saw who it was.
"About time you showed up. We were starting to worry." Peach said as she waved at people approaching the village.
"Sorry about that. The king had another tantrum, and I had to search the dungeons for a certain someone." Mario responded.
"Papa!" Raphtalia and Rifana shouted as they tackled Luigi into a hug.
"Hey! Were you two waiting for us?" He asked.
"Yes. We were worried when you didn't come back. We thought something happened to you." Rifana answered.
"It's-a fine. The king did try something, but Mario thwarted his plans."
"It was-a luck more than anything, bro. We were fortunate he underestimated how strong we were. We would have been in trouble if he had mages as strong as us." Mario explained.
"See! That's why you shouldn't have gone. I knew that bastard would try something underhanded." Keel said.
"Well, we'll just have to be more cautious in the future. Oh, and I found someone you all might recognize."
Mario stepped aside to reveal Eclair.
"Eclair!" The three demi children shouted.
"Raphtalia, Rifana, Keel! It's good to see you're alright." Eclair said in elation.
"It's because of Papa. He and Uncle Mario saved us." Rifana answered.
"I see that. I'm sorry I couldn't protect you all."
"It's okay. You tried, at least. I don't think anyone besides Papa and Uncle Mario could take on that many knights by themselves." Raphtalia said.
"I agree. After seeing the aftermath of his fight, I'm not sure any army could stand up to Mario or his brother. Speaking of, why are you two calling them Papa and Uncle?"
"We adopted them," Daisy answered. "Hi, I'm Daisy. And you must be Eclair."
Daisy extended a hand that Eclair had taken for a handshake.
"Yes, I am. Thank you for saving them and the village. You have my most sincere gratitude. On another note, I'm surprised you adopted Raphtalia and Rifana."
"Well, after hearing how much Rifana looked up to the Shield Hero, I thought this would be a great way to help her and Raphtalia since their parents are, um, you know."
The adults nodded in understanding, not wanting to bring up painful memories for the young demis.
"Well, it's late. We should turn in for the night." Peach said.
"True. I still can't believe Lurolona has been rebuilt. I thought you were exaggerating about that, Mario. But the proof stands before me. It's amazing." Eclair said as she gazed over Lurolona.
"Yep. Papa and Mario can do anything!" Rifana cheered.
"Okay, enough bragging, you little munchkin. Let's get to bed. We have a lot of work ahead of us." Daisy said.
"Yes. Do you have somewhere to stay, Eclair? The villagers told me that the waves and knights destroyed your manor. I don't think Mario and Luigi rebuilt it." Peach said.
"Yeah, sorry about that. We were focused on fixing up the village." Mario answered.
"It's okay. The villagers' homes would have been my top priority. I'll ask one of them if I can stay with them for now."
"Oh! You can stay at my house." Rifana said. "I'll be staying at Raphtalia's now, along with Mama and Papa, since we're family now. So it's available."
"Thank you, Rifana. I really appreciate that."
"Then that just leaves us. I hope you don't mind if we stay with you, Keel." Peach said.
"Huh? Um, no, I don't mind. But why don't you stay with the Shield Hero and Daisy? Isn't Mario his brother?" Keel asked.
"Yes, but with the four of them, I assume it would be crowded in there. Plus, you could use some company tonight. Or do you want to be alone?"
"What!? I mean, no. I mean! I don't care! I'm just offering you shelter. Thanks for saving us!"
Peach and Mario chuckled at Keel's attempt to appear tough. Soon, everyone turned in for the night to rest. When morning came, everyone got up to continue restoring the village. But an unexpected sight awaited them. In front of the town was a woman wearing a cloak and mask.
"Who's that?" Daisy asked.
"It's a shadow!" Raphtalia said in fear.
"Shadow?"
"Their agents that work as spies or assassins," Rifana answered Peach.
"Mamamia. Is the king still trying to kill me?" Mario asked.
He and Luigi were about to go and confront the shadow, but Eclair stopped them.
"Wait! That mask, it's one of the queen's shadows!" Eclair exclaimed.
"The queen has her own shadows?" Luigi asked.
"Yes. She's often away on diplomatic missions. In preparation for this, she had a group of shadows trained to serve only her. Just in case of a divide in the kingdom's royale army and shadow divisions caused by her husband or the church."
"I see. That's smart thinking." Peach said.
"Yes, it was. And since they serve directly under the queen, their authority is second only to her."
"Really? So they have even more authoritative power than the king?" Daisy asked.
"Yes, since defying one of them is defying the queen herself."
"I wonder why she's here then," Luigi asked.
"We won't find out by standing here. Let's-a go ask her." Mario said.
With that, the group approached the queen's shadow. When they got close, the shadow bowed to them.
"Greetings, Shield Hero. It is good to see you doing well." She said.
"Oh, so you don't follow that crazy religion?" Luigi asked.
"No. We follow the queen and her views. As long as you don't show yourself as a threat, we will not consider you one."
"That's-a good to hear. But why are you here?"
"To bring word from the queen. First, she offers her thanks for saving the citizens of Lurolona and Eclair."
"She knew about what her husband did?" Peach asked.
"She found out a few days ago. When we brought word back to her of what he had done."
"I see. And how does she feel about her husband's actions and what we have done to him?"
"Do not worry. The queen will deal with the king once she returns. And she decrees all your actions to be done in self-defense. You will not be charged with any crimes associated with defending yourself against Aultcray's schemes."
The SuperStars and their allies sighed in relief hearing this.
"Now then," The shadow pulled out a scroll from her cloak and began to read off it. "By order of Queen Mirellia, The Shield Hero and his allies are now pardoned of any crimes King Aultcray XXXII or Princess Malty S. Melromarc may have charged them with. As a condolence for her family's actions towards the Shield Hero, the Shield and his allies can ignore any summons made by the king, the church, or any other authoritative figure unless they have a summons bearing the queen's stamp. Also, the Shield and his allies will be given lordship over the late Lord Seaetto's lands until she returns."
"That's surprising," Daisy commented.
"Yes, but a smart move," Eclair said.
"How so?"
"Because, despite being the daughter of the previous lord and the rightful heir, my 'crime' of treason and weakened state hinders me from protecting my father's lands. But if the Shield Hero and his allies, who have the queen's approval and have shown tremendous power, were to govern over the lands, it would greatly deter anyone from attacking it," Eclair explained.
The four nodded until Peach noticed something about Eclair's words.
"Weakened state?" Peach asked.
"Yes. When I was taken before King Aultcray, he had my levels removed because I fought against the knights that invaded Lurolona. Now I'm only level one."
"I didn't know you could take levels," Mario said.
"The Dragon Hourglass in the church is capable of this terrifying feat. It's a punishment normally reserved for those who have committed truly heinous crimes."
"Dragon Hourglass?"
Eclair was shocked that Luigi and the others didn't know about the Dragon Hourglass.
"How? Did you not sync with the hourglass when you arrived?"
Luigi and the others shook their heads at Eclair's question.
"Then we have much to discuss once we're done with the queen's shadow! I can't believe this. It's no doubt due to that racist king." Eclair growled out.
The shadow coughed to get their attention again.
"Oh! I'm sorry about that!" Eclair said with a bow.
"No need. It's understandable to be shocked that the Shield Hero has not synced with the hourglass yet. Though it is to be expected, knowing the king's attitude towards him."
Everyone just nodded in agreement.
"Now, let us continue with the decree. The queen has also decreed that the monthly funds for all four heroes shall resume and will be under the watch of her trusted agents. Any misappropriation or misuse of these funds by the king or any other party shall be reported to the queen and be dealt with upon her return. And last, any attempts to extort, harm, kidnap, or falsely accuse the Shield Hero or his allies of any crimes will be considered a crime, despite what the Three Heroes Faith states. Failure to adhere to this new law will be grounds for imprisonment and possibly the death penalty."
The four SuperStars were shocked to hear the harsh punishment for breaking the new law.
"Sounds a bit extreme, don't you think?" Peach asked.
"I believe it's because the queen fears angering Mario and Luigi," Eclair answered.
"Huh? Why would she be scared of us?" Luigi asked.
"Sir Luigi, you and your brother defeated the Tyrant Dragon Rex by yourselves. A feat that four Cardinal Heroes of the past couldn't do. Also, the legends state that the Tyrant Dragon Rex was so powerful that it would take at least a few large armies to defeat. And again, you two did that alone. And quite easily, from what I'm told."
Mario and Luigi just rubbed the back of their heads in embarrassment.
"She's right." The shadow said. "While I can't speak for the queen herself. We shadows fear the power you and your brother hold, Sir Shield. You have done something that is, quite frankly, impossible. I can say that, at the moment, we would have nothing to stop you two if you were to turn against Melromarc."
The four could sense the air of unease and fear from the shadow. Mario stepped forward to dispel that fear and apprehension.
"While I can understand your queen's reasoning, we are heroes back in our world. We fight to protect the innocent and only fight back in defense, not revenge," Mario said, holding up his hands non-threateningly.
The shadow let out a sigh of relief upon hearing this.
"That's good to hear, brother of the Shield. Still, you cannot fault the queen for taking these measures to protect the kingdom. Even now, word of your feats is spreading to the other kingdoms. This will no doubt be brought up in the discussions at Faubrey."
"Faubrey? Is-a that where the queen is right now?"
"Yes. The meeting between the great kingdoms to summon the heroes was held in Faubrey. Even now, thanks to the king's actions, the queen is doing all she can to appease the other kingdoms from waging war on Melromarc. Thankfully, the other two heroes' meetings with representatives from Faubrey and Zeltoble are helping her in that regard."
Mario and Luigi smiled, knowing Ren and Itsuki were doing something to help the queen save her kingdom.
"Still, I have to ask. Why have you not met with any representatives from Siltvelt or Shieldfreeden?"
"Um, we haven't run into any," Luigi answered.
"I see. This must be the work of the king or the church. They're trying to keep you here in Melromarc."
"But why?" Peach asked.
"Who knows, but it can't be for anything good. This decree is being read in significant gathering places in Melromarc, including in front of the castle. Soon, everyone will know of the queen's decree and should not cause you any further problems. Now I must be off. May good fortune follow you all."
The shadow bowed and left. This left the group to ponder about what she said. If the queen fears their power, how will the other kingdoms react? Will they see them as threats that must be destroyed or contained? Or will they see them as assets that must be captured at all costs? The group shrugged it off for now—a problem for another day.
"Well, now that that's settled, what is this Dragon Hourglass, and why is it so important?" Daisy asked.
"The Dragon Hourglass is a powerful artifact that can predict the next wave right down to the second," Eclair answered.
"What!? Why were we not told this!?" Daisy demanded.
"It's probably another plot of that moronic king. Think about it. If the Shield Hero doesn't show up for the waves, wouldn't it prove his and the church's views of the Shield Hero right?" Peach explained.
"But what about the people affected by the waves?" Luigi asked.
"He probably doesn't care or considers them necessary sacrifices as long as he and the church are proven right about the Shield Hero being a demon," Mario answered.
"That bastard!" Keel yelled.
"That's not fair! It's not your fault you couldn't find the waves since they didn't let you sync with the hourglass!" Rifana complained.
"It wouldn't matter. The king and the church would find some way to spin it to make it our fault," Peach explained. "But, now that we know, we can sync with the hourglass."
"I wouldn't advise that, at least not yet," Eclair warned. "The hourglass is kept within the main church. If you were to go now, I have no doubt the king or the church would try something to capture or prevent you from syncing with the hourglass. It would be best if you prepared first. Gain some levels and new equipment before syncing with the hourglass."
"But what about the waves?"
"It'll be fine, Sir Luigi. The waves come at intermittent times. The last one was not even a week ago. So you still have time to gain levels and new shields and prepare for any plots the king and church have for you. The queen's decree may hinder them, but it won't stop them."
The group pondered on Eclair's words and agreed with them. Now that the king and church know of Mario and Luigi's overwhelming strength, they won't be so careless with their attempts to harm them. It would be best to prepare before heading to the hourglass.
"You're right, Eclair. It would be best to prepare. Besides, we'll also need these little munchkins to level up." Daisy said while ruffling Rifana's and Raphtalia's hair.
"Huh? Why?" Eclair asked.
"It's because we want to join Papa's party," Raphtalia answered.
"What!?"
This took Eclair aback.
"Yeah! We don't want to stand by and do nothing while Mama and Papa risk their lives fighting the waves." Rifana added.
"I see. Then we'll have a party of seven." Mario said.
"Huh? Seven?" Luigi asked while tilting his head.
"Yes, you didn't think we would leave out Keel now, did you?" Peach said.
"That makes sense. You three are close," Daisy said before she had a wide grin. "It'll be funny to see children beat adults once you three level up."
"What, you don't know?"
"Know about what, Eclair?"
"I see. Could you allow me to explain? Demi-humans have a unique trait: their age will grow as their levels increase."
"What!?" The four SuperStars said in shock.
"So, if they level up to the point they can overpower the knights or other adventurers, their bodies will match those levels."
"Huh? So you won't be cute anymore!?" Daisy asked as she pulled Raphtalia and Rifana into a hug.
"Well, cute won't help against the waves, Mama," Raphtalia answered.
"Aww, I wanted you to stay cute for a while."
"It's alright, Daisy. They'll probably return to their original age once we're back home. Probably." Peach said.
"Hopefully. I just became a mom and don't want it to end so quickly."
"True," Peach said as she pulled Keel into a hug.
While Keel blushed at this, he accepted the hug.
"Huh? Mario, did you and Peach?"
Mario just nodded at his brother's question.
"Yep. Last night, Peach and I spoke and decided to adopt keel."
"Yes, we did. So once we return to the Mushroom Kingdom, we must have two weddings. And then you'll become the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom."
Everyone, besides Mario, was confused by Peach's words.
"Huh? What are you talking about? Don't you mean prince?" Daisy asked.
"When bathing last night, we made a special discovery about Keel," Peach answered.
"Are you saying he's a she!?"
"Why does it matter if I'm a girl!? I can still help fight against the waves." Keel responded.
"Wow. I never knew." Raphtalia said, with Rifana nodding in agreement.
"Okie dokie, now we'll need to get you some starter gear for power leveling. After you get your growth spurts, we'll get you some better gear." Mario said.
"We should see that blacksmith. He didn't appear to be a part of the main faith around Melromarc." Peach suggested.
"Good idea. Luigi and I will take them to get starter gear. One of you should watch the village while the other takes Eclair to regain her levels."
Everyone nodded and set off to complete their tasks. Peach took Eclair to the forest to level up while Daisy watched the village. Later, Mario and Luigi arrived at Erhard's shop with the three demi-children.
"Hello, and welcome to my shop! Oh, it's you again." Erhard said in greeting.
"Hey."
"Hello."
The Mario Bros. waved back.
"Man, I must say, you two have made things much more exciting here."
"Really?" Luigi asked.
"Yep. Everyone's already heard about you two killing the Dragon Tyrant Rex. Most people dismiss it as exaggerated rumors or lies, but the queen's decree has added truth to those claims. Now, the townsfolk are either delighted to have such strong heroes protecting them or terrified of the demon brothers' powers. It's been a riot."
"Hmm, I thought the Three Heroes Church only depicted the Shield as a demon?"
"Since we're brothers, they probably started lumping us together. Honestly, demon brothers would be something that stupid king would call us."
Luigi and Mario said.
"Speaking of, I heard the king and the princess had a massive fit over the queen's decree. Threw a royal tantrum on the balcony." Erhard said.
"Really? I wish I could've seen it." Mario said, but then he had a thought. "Hey, have you heard anything about Ren and Itsuki?"
"Oh, you mean the Sword and Bow heroes? Hmm, not much about the Sword Hero. He's been asking about the other kingdoms lately and that he's been going on trips into the woods with his team." Erhard answered.
"I see. And Itsuki?"
"The Bow Hero? Well, word on the street is he's been having trouble with his team lately."
"Huh? Really?" Luigi asked.
"Yep. Apparently, it all started when he bought a slave."
"Itsuki bought a slave?"
"Yes, sir. You inspired him if the rumors are true. After hearing how you bought a slave to save her from cruel treatment, thanks to the laws of this kingdom, he bought a slave himself to do the same."
"I see. That's-a good, then. He's trying to help people, like a hero."
"Yeah, but unfortunately, it didn't go over well with the rest of his team. According to some people who worked at the taverns the Bow's team would stay at, there would be constant arguments coming from their rooms."
"Why?"
"It's because of the slave. The Bow bought the slave so it would be treated better, but his team did not like that idea and would treat the slave horribly. Not surprising, especially since one of his teammates comes from nobility."
"Mamamia." The brothers said in exasperation.
"I hope he's able to solve that problem," Luigi said.
"So do I. I never agreed with the notion that demis are lower than humans. But, being a simple blacksmith, all I can do is hope that change comes to the kingdom one day. Now, what're you here for? The hammer isn't done yet if that's it."
"Oh, we're here for some armor and short swords for them."
Mario gestured to the three demi children behind them.
"Huh? I thought you only got one slave?"
"The first slave asked us to save her village, and that's-a where the other two girls came from. Oh, and they're not our slaves; they're our daughters."
Erhard had nearly choked at this news.
"What!? Really?"
Mario and Luigi nodded at his question.
"I see. If that's what you think is best, I won't question your decision. Now, do you know about a special trait demi-humans have?"
"Oh yeah, Eclair told us all about it. So we need some basic leather armor to start. Once they're leveled up, we'll return to get better gear for them." Mario explained.
"Hmm, sounds good. Hey, I still have some of that fabric Peach gave me. I can use that to make their gear."
"That-a sounds excellent. How much?" Luigi asked.
"Oh, it'll be completely free. I managed to create a recipe that replicates the fabric. The original is stronger than it is, but it offers the same protection against status ailments and elemental attacks. I already have so many orders for gear made from it. You all have made my business boom! Consider this freebie as thanks for that."
Mario and Luigi smiled at this and accepted Erhard's offer. After getting Keel, Raphtalia, and Rifana their gear and weapons, the group returned to Lurolona. They saw Peach and Daisy sparring with Eclair when they arrived, but something was weird. Peach and Daisy were wearing strange outfits.
"What are they wearing?" Keel asked.
"Oh, that's Peach and Daisy's Swordfighter outfits," Mario answered.
"Swordfighter?" The three girls said in confusion.
"It's-a best to let them explain it," Luigi said.
"Hmm? Oh, hey there! Let's take a break." Peach said as she noticed Mario and the others.
Daisy and Eclair nodded.
"I must say, Lady Daisy, you and Lady Peach are extraordinary. I was barely able to keep up with the two of you." Eclair said between breaths.
"That's just because of the level difference, Eclair. You have excellent swordsmanship. If you were around the same level as us, then we would be the ones struggling to keep up."
"Oh, you're too kind."
"It's good to see you three getting along," Mario commented.
"Yes, we are. And it looks like you three are ready to level up."
Keel, Raphtalia, and Rifana smiled and grinned at this comment.
"By the way, what level are you now?" Mario asked.
"Thanks to Lady Peach, I'm level ten," Eclair answered.
"That's-a good. If we're teleported away during the waves, then that would leave Lurolona undefended. We need you to regain your levels to defend the village while we're gone."
"While that is true, Sir Mario, I am just one against many. It would be best if I had some help to defend Lurolona."
"Which is why we came up with the idea to train some villagers to fight," Daisy said.
"Wow. That's-a good idea," Luigi commented.
"Yes. So, while you six go out to level up, I will gather some villagers to start training them," Eclair said.
The group nodded and left to do their tasks. Soon, the SuperStars and their adopted daughters were in the castle town's forests. Here, small hedgehog creatures slightly stronger than the balloons roamed—perfect for the three girls to use to gain levels. The group searched until they found one.
"Okay, wait here," Mario said.
He and Luigi approached the hedgehog creature until it noticed them. They were expecting it to charge at them, but it fled instead.
"Huh? What happened?" Luigi pondered on this until he remembered something. "Doh! That's-a right! My new shield!"
"Huh? What're you talking about, bro?"
"Remember the new shield I got?" Luigi changed his shield into the dragon rex shield. "One of its passive skills was Intimidating Presence. It scares away all lower-level creatures and has creatures with higher or equal levels focus on me."
"Ah, that explains it. Hmm, then we're going to have to try something else."
Mario pondered what to do now that Luigi scares away all low-level creatures with his new skill. How ironic, given how timid he usually is. Mario was deep in thought when it hit him.
"Alrighty. Peach, you and I will chase some monsters. Luigi, you and the others will stay here and wait for us."
Luigi nodded at Mario's plan. Mario and Peach, in her Sword Fighter outfit, went into the brush while everyone else waited for them. Soon, they heard monster cries and running. That's when three hedgehog monsters dashed towards them with Mario and Peach in hot pursuit.
"Okay, bro! Look intimidating!" Mario called out.
Luigi did that and took up his fighting stance. The three hedgehog monsters were getting closer, and once they were close enough, Mario's plan went into effect. Luigi's intimidation skill made the hedgehogs freeze in fear. They didn't know what to do with a threat behind them and one in front. This moment of hesitation was all Mario and Peach needed to catch them. The hedgehog monsters tried to break free using their quills, but they didn't feel a thing, thanks to Mario and Peach's high stats.
"Okay, now, one of you, come and stab the monster," Mario said as he held up a hedgehog monster.
Keel stepped forward and stabbed her sword into it. The monster let out a shriek and then went limp. Luigi saw on his status screen that Keel had gained some experience.
"Good job. Next." Luigi said.
Rifana stepped forward and held up her sword. She was about to stab it, but the monster hissed, scaring her into dropping the sword.
"Oh no! I'm sorry! Give me another chance! I can-"
Before Rifana could continue, Daisy placed a hand on her head.
"Shh, it's okay. This is your first time doing this, right?" Rifana nodded. "Then it makes sense that you would be frightened by this. But that's what we're here for. To level you three up and get you used to this. So it's okay, Rifana, pick up your sword and try again."
Rifana wiped off her tears and smiled with renewed determination.
"Okay, Mama."
She picked up her sword and stabbed Mario's second monster. Raphtalia was next and managed to stab and kill Peach's monster.
"Good. Now, are you three ready to continue?" Luigi asked.
The three girls nodded with confidence.
"Good, then let's-a go!"
The group continued this activity for the next few hours.
One week later
In the forests around Melromarc, we see a porcupine monster running away from something. When it reaches a clearing, Mario and Peach reveal that they are chasing it.
"Okay, you're up, Keel!" Mario shouted.
A now full-grown Keel leaps out from the bushes with a large hammer. With great force, she slams the hammer down in front of the porcupine monster. The shockwave created by the attack launches the porcupine monster upward. Keel pulled back her hammer, and once the porcupine was within range, she swung it, striking the beast and sending it flying into a tree and killing it.
"Great job, Keel!" Mario said.
"Thank you, Father," Keel said with a smile as she rested her hammer on her shoulder.
More rustling was heard, and two more porcupine creatures came out, chased by Daisy and Luigi.
"Okay, girls, it's-a your turn!" Luigi shouted.
At Luigi's command, Keel and Raphtalia, also fully grown, jump out to attack. Keel used a bow and fired two arrows that struck the targets. Even though her shots didn't kill the porcupines, they pinned them to the ground. Raphtalia swooped in and cut them down with her sword as they struggled to free themselves.
"Great work, everyone! I think we're ready for the next wave." Peach said.
The three demis smiled in pride at this.
"Alright, I think that's enough exp grinding for today," Mario said, getting everyone's attention. "We should head back home after picking up our orders."
Everyone nodded and left to finish their tasks. Later, the group swung by Erhard's shop.
"Hello, and welcome to my shop. Oh, it's you guys. Are you here for your orders?" Erhard asked.
"Yep. Are they ready?" Luigi asked.
"Heh, just finished them this morning."
Erhard pointed to three sets of armor in the back: one heavy armor set, one medium-sized armor set, and the last light armor set.
"Great! So what do we owe you?" Mario asked.
Erhard just chuckled before waving it off.
"Please don't worry. It's on the house."
The Shield group was shocked by this.
"No, we can't just take them without paying you," Peach said.
"It's okay. Since I could recreate the fabric you gave me, I've been getting orders for new armor sets left and right. These three pieces were made with a combination of the original fabric and the recreation fabric I made."
"Oh, so they're just as strong as our gear?" Daisy asked.
"Not exactly. While I was able to recreate the special attributes of the fabric, I couldn't replicate its durability. I don't know where or how the person who made the original got it, but it's stronger than anything I can make. Still, they retain a high resistance to magic and elemental attacks and nullify all abnormal status effects. Just add some good armor to the cloth, and it's ready to go."
Mario nodded before turning to Keel, Raphtalia, and Rifana.
"Go try them on and see how they fit."
The three girls nodded and went into a back room to change. Soon, they came out wearing their new armor. Keel wore heavy armor because she was the strongest of the three and would often serve as the group's tank if Luigi wasn't around. Raphtalia wore medium armor because she was the main damage dealer and needed something durable but light enough to move around. Finally, Rifana wore light armor as she was the group's archer and needed speed to avoid attacks and outrun any foes who got too close.
"So? How do they feel?" Luigi asked.
"They feel great!" Rifana cheered.
The other two smiled and nodded in agreement.
"That's great to hear," Erhard said. "Oh, and before I forget, here."
Erhard placed Mario's improved hammer onto the counter. The head was the same, but the hand was remade with wood and steel. He also added braces to the top of the hammer to keep the head from falling off.
"I gave it a new handle and added something to keep the head from falling off. Didn't mess with the head itself, though. It's made out of something stronger than any material I have."
"It's a strong metal from my home world," Mario answered as he picked up the hammer.
He examined it and liked the improvements made to the head. He didn't understand why the Hammerhead Bros. didn't add something to hold the head in the first place. It would have helped in his and Luigi's adventures.
"I see. Well, onto other things. I suppose you also want an update on your other orders?" Erhard asked, looking at Peach and Daisy.
"Heck yeah!" Daisy answered.
"Enthusiastic. Well, I'm still waiting for the last pieces to be delivered. So they're still being prepared. Still can't believe you two can change into swordswomen and shadows."
"Ninjas. They're called ninjas." Peach corrected.
After her adventure at the Sparkla Theatre, Peach retained the ability to transform her outfits and shared the power with Daisy. However, the costumes only gave them special powers or skills with Stella or another Sparkle Sprite. However, the Sword Fighter and Ninja outfits were more manageable to fight in when using a sword or daggers. That's why Peach and Daisy asked for better swords and daggers from Erhard.
"Yeah, whatever you call them, it's still amazing that you can change your fighting style on a whim. Can't say I've met anyone like that before."
Peach and Daisy chuckled at Erhard's compliment before giving a gracious bow.
"Thank you for the compliment," Peach said.
"You're welcome. I should receive the last pieces in a few days, so your order should be ready within a week."
"That's-a good to know. Well, we should get going. Thanks for the custom armors again." Luigi said as he and the others left.
"You're welcome!" Erhard said as he waved back at them.
After they left Erhard's shop, the group went to the magic shop to pick up some items and check the girls' magic affinities. Since they spent the week power-leveling the girls, having their magic affinities slipped their minds. They were pleased to learn that Keel had fire and earth magic. As the group began to praise Keel, the witch spoke up.
"While that's all good, dear, there is something else." The witch said with a smile.
"What is it?" Keel asked.
"I'm pleased to say that you are a therianthrope."
The three girls' mouths were agape while the Superstars were confused.
"Um, is that good?" Luigi asked.
"Good? It's great! I'm just like Sadeena now!" Keel cheered.
"Who?"
"The strongest woman in our village, mother. She was out fishing when the wave struck. I wonder where she is now?" Raphtalia said.
"If she managed to survive the wave, she might be out looking for survivors. That would be something I would do if I came back to find my village destroyed." Peach said.
"But where would she be?" Rifana asked.
"Hmm, we'll ask Beloukas if he has any information on her. Now, what's a therianthrope?" Mario asked.
"It's a demi-human who can transform. Sadeena was able to turn into a large whale. Keel, try it out!" Rifana said.
"Okay! Um, how do I do that?"
"This may help."
The witch held out three books. One was on fire magic, the other on earth, but the last looked more like a journal.
"What's this book?" Keel asked.
"It belonged to a friend who is no longer with us. He, too, was a therianthrope and wrote down his findings on his power." The witch said in a somber tone.
"Oh no. We can't take that from you. It must be personal if it belonged to your friend." Peach said.
"It's fine. I'm sure he would want you to have it as he was looking for a student to pass his teachings onto when he was alive."
"I see. Then I'll do my best to learn from this." Keel said as she graciously took the journal.
"Wow. I wonder if all three of you are therianthropes." Luigi said.
"I don't think so, Father. Therianthropes are rare. Even in our village, only Sadeena was a therianthrope. And there were a couple hundred villagers at least." Raphtalia answered.
"I see. Oh well, now let's get you two checked."
The Raphtalia went next and was told she had light, shadow, and illusion magic, while Rifana had wind and plague magic.
"Plague magic?" Daisy asked.
"Magic that can induce various status illnesses such as poison, blindness, mana fatigue, etc." The witch explained.
"Amazing. That means that even a tiny nick from your arrows will cause problems for our enemies. Way to go, Rifana!" Luigi cheered.
Rifana blushed and chuckled at being praised like this. The Mario Bros. bought transformation stones after buying the necessary books for the two. These stones can completely change a person's appearance if they are strong enough. This makes them useful for spies and assassins. But the stones Mario and Luigi bought were just strong enough to change the appearance of their clothes.
"Um, why did you buy those stones?" Raphtalia asked.
The two chuckled before activating the stones. After a flash of light, Mario and Luigi wore a complete set of silver armor with gold trims. They also had capes: Mario's was red, and Luigi's was green.
"Whoa." The three demi girls said in awe.
"We figured that we looked part of legendary heroes since you and the rest of Lurolona see us as heroes after that night at Rabier's mansion," Mario explained.
The three girls stared at the two with awe until Keel glanced at Peach and Daisy.
"And you, Mother? What will you and Auntie Daisy wear?"
"Oh, we'll just stick with our Swordfighter outfits. They fit well enough," Peach said.
"It's good to see you all doing so well. I wish you good fortune on your adventures." The witch said as she waved at the group as they left.
That just left one more stop before returning to Lurolona. The group soon entered Beloukas' tent.
"Welcome, Sir Shield and friends. How may I be of service?" Beloukas asked.
"Hello, Beloukas. We're here for the usual." Luigi answered.
Beloukas nodded and left to get what Luigi and the others wanted. He returned with five slaves: three from the 'bargain-bin'—slaves in such bad condition that they are bought with the sole purpose of dying soon while executing their duties—and two high-end slaves. The group looked over the five slaves brought out to them.
The two high-end slaves were muscular wolf demis that appeared to be siblings: one female and one male. From the three bargain demis was a female rabbit missing half her right ear, right eye, left arm, and right foot. The second was an extremely sickly cat girl. It looked like she would die any second. And finally, a lizard man who was mumbling to himself while his eyes darted everywhere.
"What's-a the story with these three?" Mario asked.
"These three came to me from a noble who owns many potion shops in Melromarc and many other kingdoms. To ensure his products' safety and strength, he buys slaves to test them." Beloukas explained.
"Mamamia. I'm surprised they survived that." Luigi said.
"As am I, Sir Shield. Most slaves he buys die during the 'test runs' of his potions. The few that survive are sold to me or other slave traders from the various kingdoms around the world."
"What a cruel man. Does the queen know about this?" Peach asked.
"Even if she did, she can't do anything about it. The man lives in Zeltoble, where the queen holds no power. Not to mention buying slaves to test for poison in food or drink, or to test your 'products' is common practice in that kingdom."
The Shield team shook their heads at this revelation. If Beloukas's statement is true, the fact that this noble has thriving shops means that the people who buy these potions either don't know or don't care how they are made. They are inclined to believe the latter after seeing the way most citizens of Melromarc treat their slaves.
"And them?" Mario asked, pointing to the wolf demis. "What's-a their story?"
"Oh, these two were the personal guards of a wealthy Zeltoble Merchant. Unfortunately, he was assassinated on their watch. So his son sold them to me."
"Ouch. How'd that happen?" Daisy asked.
"It's quite an interesting story. The assassins managed to exploit a loophole in the slave seal."
"A loophole?"
"Yes. You see, the slave has no choice but to obey their master's order, no matter what. But that's only if they can hear the order."
This caught the Shield team's attention.
"During the attack, the assassins sent a squad to the front of the merchant's room. He ordered these two to, I quote, 'not let anyone through those doors. Even if it costs you your lives.'. Having received their orders, the two guards took their positions. And that's when one of the assassins cast a silent area spell."
"Silent area? What kind of spell is that?" Daisy asked.
"I assume it's a spell that silences a person. I've encountered enemies that use that kind of magic before. It prevented me and my allies from using magic." Mario answered.
"Right, you are, good sir. Silence spells are helpful against opponents who have powerful magic, like witches and wizards, as they prevent the target from using spells. But the spell the assassins used was different. It didn't silence the guards; it created an area where sound couldn't reach. Effectively making them deaf."
"Okay, but what does that do?"
"Remember, Lady Daisy, that the two guards were ordered to protect the door. After the spell was cast, several assassins snuck in through the windows. With the guards stuck at the door, they were free to kill the merchant."
"What!? But why didn't they move to stop them?" Rifana asked.
"Because they were ordered to protect the door."
"But didn't they see the assassins enter through the windows?"
"It doesn't matter. They were still under orders to protect the door. It didn't matter that they saw their master about to die. The slave crest forced them to follow the last order they heard. And since they were under the silent spell, they couldn't hear their master plead for help and were forced to watch him be killed before their eyes."
The Shield team was shocked but glad to hear this revelation. They now knew of a loophole in the slave crest that they could be exploited.
"Well, shall we get started?" Beloukas asked.
Luigi nodded and handed Beloukas a bag of silver. They proceeded with the branding ritual, and the five slaves were added to Luigi's list of partners. Luigi decided to add all the villagers of Lurolona, including Eclair, to his partner list. Eclair was worried that this would ruin Luigi's exp gain since it would spread throughout everyone on his list. But Luigi discovered something from the help menu in his shield.
Luigi could choose where his partners were allocated. For example, Keel, Raphtalia, and Rifana were part of his party, so they gained exp with him. Everyone else was placed in the 'citizens under The Shield's care' group. This allowed Luigi to watch over them without taking the exp needed for his party. This was helpful because Luigi could see a villager's skills or particular traits. This allowed him to see who could be a doctor, builder, farmer, etc. He could also check if they had any ailments or harbored ill intentions towards him or his allies.
After the ritual was done, Luigi faced his new partners.
"Okie dokie. Now, tell me your history and how you became a slave."
This may appear invasive, but Luigi and the others needed to know this after a previous incident. Since Luigi was named the lord over the lands of the late Seaetto, he and the others have been buying slaves from Beloukas to offer them a better life. This came back to bite them as one slave they bought had sinister plans for the group. While Luigi could see if any of his partners had ill intentions, he had to personally check by asking them questions.
On a previous day, a slave they bought snuck into their home and tried to rape Rifana. Luckily, she and the others spent the day grinding for levels. With her new strength, she was able to overpower her assailant. This caused a commotion that made Luigi, Daisy, and Raphtalia rush into Rifana's room.
After checking to see if she was okay, their attention turned to the rapist. That's when they discovered something about the partner seals. If Luigi held enough hatred for someone, the partner seal would turn into a slave seal. Once the seal was changed, Luigi asked the demi male what he had done before he was a slave. They were shocked to learn he was a criminal who enjoyed taking advantage of women. He was betrayed by the other members of his group and sold to a slave trader.
Luigi and the others were disgusted and sold the man back to Beloukas after Daisy taught him a lesson. Ever since they always questioned the slaves they bought before bringing them back to Lurolona. Luckily, these slaves were clean and safe to bring back to Lurolona. The sun was setting when they arrived at Lurolona. Thanks to the villagers' efforts, with help from Mario and Luigi, Lurolona was bigger and better than before. In the back of the village was a large house for Luigi and his team since he was the new lord.
"It's good to see you return safely. Did the level grinding go well?" Eclair asked as she and some villagers she took under her wing came out to greet Luigi and the others.
"It went well, Eclair. We brought back more villagers." Peach answered.
Eclair and her team examined the new additions as they emerged from the wagon Luigi had borrowed from the rancher in town. They gazed upon the mistreated slaves with pity.
"Oh dear. These three need medical attention immediately. You two, take them to the town doctor." Eclair ordered.
The two demi fighters gave a nod and took the three slaves away. Eclair then turned to the two wolf siblings.
"And these two?"
"They were bodyguards who failed to protect their master," Daisy answered.
"Oh. Will they be able to help then?"
"It's-a fine. It was thanks to a loophole in the slave seal that they failed. Something that shouldn't be a problem here," Mario explained.
"I see. Very well then. You, take them to the barracks."
The demi fighter nodded and guided the wolves to their destination. The last two of Eclair's group took the filolials and the wagon back to the rancher while Luigi and his team walked with Eclair.
"So, how are things here?" Peach asked.
"They're great, Lady Peach. The town's doctors are doing great work thanks to Sir Mario's teachings and help in gathering supplies. The villagers who volunteered to fight are making great progress. Also, the armor and weapons you ordered from Erhard arrived this morning, and the fighters are getting used to using them."
"That's-a good to hear," Luigi said.
"Yes, it is. The walls have also been improved, and we should have the gate up by tomorrow. And finally, the farmers, ranchers, and fishermen have been reporting good yields, so our food supply is fine. All in all, Lurolona is better than before the wave. And it's all thanks to you all."
The Shield Team just giggled while rubbing the back of their heads.
"It's-a nothing. Just doing the right thing." Mario said.
"And we're all thankful for it. With all these improvements, we're ready for the next wave should it appear near here. Now, are you ready for the trip tomorrow?" Eclair asked.
The group looked at each other and nodded.
"As ready as we'll ever be," Mario answered.
"Are you sure there's no other way to sync with this hourglass thing?" Daisy asked.
"I'm sorry, Lady Daisy, but syncing with the hourglass is the only way to find the waves," Eclair answered.
"And it had to be guarded by that insane cult," Mario said in annoyance.
"Are you sure this is the only way to fight the waves? We could fly around until we find where the wave appeared."
Eclair was confused by this.
"You can fly?"
The Superstars smiled as they activated their tanuki and kitsune power-ups. Mario and Peach were now anthropomorphic tanukis, while Luigi and Daisy were kitsunes. Eclair was stunned by this, but they weren't done yet. The four began to spin their tails and were hovering in the air.
"Ta-da!" Daisy said while waving her hands.
"Amazing."
"It truly is."
"I can't wait until we can do that!"
Rifana and Raphtalia said excitedly, imagining flying through the air with their parents.
"Wait! They can do that?" Eclair asked.
"With enough practice. You have been doing the practices we asked you to do, right?" Mario asked.
"Of course, Father!" Keel answered excitedly.
"Good."
"While that is an amazing skill, it would still be best to sync with the hourglass," Eclair stated.
"Fine," Daisy grumbled as she and the others landed and returned to their base forms. "We should head to bed. It's been a long day."
"Yes, it's best you retire for the night. You'll need to visit the church tomorrow."
"Right. We'll need the energy to fight off any traps they may have for us." Peach said.
"Do you think they would go that far?" Raphtalia asked.
"With everything the church and that racist bastard has done? I wouldn't be surprised if they had platoons of knights waiting to try to capture or kill Father and Uncle Luigi." Keel said.
"Not to mention that stupid spear guy. I can't believe he attacked Papa and Uncle Mario not once but twice!" Rifana added.
"It'll be fine, girls. We'll be ready for whatever the king, church, or Motoyasu have planned for us. Not let's go. We need to get cleaned up before going to bed," Peach said.
Everyone just nodded before leaving for their homes.
The next day
The sun was high, and the Shield Team had just arrived at the main church. The group admired the building's beauty.
"Wow. You have to admit, this is a nice building." Luigi commented.
"Yeah. But don't forget that everyone in there hates us." Mario said.
The group nodded and walked up the steps. As they reached the door, two guards barred their path.
"What business do you have here, demon!?" One guard demanded.
"We're here to sync with the hourglass," Luigi answered.
"Fine, one hundred silver then."
Luigi and the others were shocked by this.
"What!? One hundred silver to enter the church!?" Daisy yelled.
"Criminals need to pay to enter the church of salvation. In fact, for seven of you, seven hundred silver!"
Daisy was angered by this and had half a mind to beat up the two guards for extortion. But luckily,
"They shouldn't have to pay."
Everyone turned to see Ren and Itsuki approaching the doors with their teams.
"Ah! Sir Ren and Sir Itsuki! What brings you two here?" A guard asked with a nervous tone.
"We came to purchase some holy water for curses."
"Yeah, but we find the guards extorting Luigi and his team instead."
Ren and Itsuki answered.
"No, no, no, no! You got it all wrong, great heroes. This was, uh, it was just to make sure the criminals paid for their crimes."
"Criminals? You wouldn't happen to be talking about Luigi and his team, would you now?" Itsuki asked with an annoyed glare.
"Uh, um, yes."
"That's bullshit! Why are they criminals?"
"Because, um, the Shield Demon raped the princess, Sir Itsuki!"
"That was proven false," Ren said.
"But! He and his brother also killed Rabier!"
"That was also proven false. Also, a later investigation found that Rabier was killed by the Tyrant Dragon, not Luigi or Mario. They are innocent." Itsuki explained.
"But, but, but!"
"Now, I believe you should move out of the way. Or should I report to the queen's shadows that you tried to extort the Shield Hero? I'm sure she would like to know why the Shield Hero didn't fight the waves and who is responsible for it."
The guards looked at each other nervously before complying with Itsuki's order and reluctantly letting Luigi and his team pass. The three heroes and their teams walked in with no further trouble. Luigi then turned to Itsuki and Ren.
"Hey, thanks for the help, you two," Luigi said.
"Don't mention it, Luigi. You and Mario have helped us both out already, so it's time we returned the favor." Itsuki said, with Ren nodding in agreement.
After the failed trial of Idol Rabier, Mario and Luigi gave Ren and Itsuki some tips on how to fight and some materials from the Tyrant Dragon to help them. They also explained how this world was real and not some game like the two teens originally thought. It took a while and some mental exercises, but the two got the message and started to treat the situation more seriously.
While walking, Luigi noticed Itsuki's team was different. Before, he had a group of five to six with a large knight constantly singing Itsuki's praises. Now, it was just two girls: one with long green hair and one with blue skin, long black hair, and ears that reminded him of Link.
"Hey, Itsuki."
"Yeah?"
"What happened to your team?"
"Oh, that. Let's just say you were right about talking with my team. I found out they weren't 'my' team and were just following me for fame and greed. So I got rid of them and got a new team that was loyal. Go on, say hi."
"Oh, um, hello there, Sir Shield, I'm Rishia," The green girl said nervously.
"Hello. Hey, is she okay?"
"She has some confidence issues, but we're working on it. She's really smart and knows all kinds of magic." Itsuki answered.
"You praise me too much, Sir Itsuki."
"I don't think so, Rishia. Your knowledge and spells have saved us many times," The blue girl said.
"I see. And who are you?" Luigi asked.
"Oh, I'm sorry about that. My name is Neia. I'm a water elf." The blue girl answered.
"Wow. How'd you find her?"
"I saved her from slavery by buying her. Once I heard you bought two slaves to save them and even rescued their friends, thought I'd help out by saving a slave as well." Itsuki answered.
"That's-a good!"
"Yeah, but it wasn't easy. Another noble had his eye on her, and I had to spend most of my funds to buy her. But that wasn't the end of it. Sometime after buying Neia, the noble confronted me with a group of his men to try and force me to give her to him. I had no choice but to kill them in self-defense." Itsuki said in a disappointed tone.
After Mario and Luigi's failed trial, Luigi shared some of the Tyrant Dragon materials with Ren and Itsuki while Mario was searching for Eclair. While doing this, Luigi also gave some tips on fighting and asked what they were up to. Itsuki proudly stated that he served justice by killing corrupt nobles in Melromarc. Luigi asked how and was shocked that Itsuki had just gone by rumors to determine who was guilty.
Luigi shook his head and told Itsuki his way was wrong. Itsuki was confused but understood when Luigi explained that everyone could spread false rumors. Evil nobles who are trying to ruin the reputations of good nobles. Or even servants who were fired for being bad at their jobs or corrupt and trying to hurt their former employer. Itsuki thought about this and agreed with Luigi that further investigations were needed.
Luigi even convinced him that he should go to the authorities first. If Itsuki just killed a noble, even if they were corrupt, without evidence, then he may be seen as the bad guy. Itsuki thought it was too much work, but the more he thought about it, the more he agreed with Luigi. He decided that Luigi was right and would only kill as a last resort. He would make sure to leave concrete evidence of the noble's evil deeds so he wouldn't get into trouble.
Luckily, most of the knights' investigations led to the arrest of the corrupt nobles. There were only a few exceptions, where the nobles had strong ties to the king's church that protected them from persecution. This only further convinced Itsuki of Aultcray's bias towards those who support him, even if they're evil. So, for these nobles, he had to take justice into his own hands.
"It's okay, Itsuki. It was self-defense; you had no choice," Luigi said reassuringly.
"Thanks, Luigi."
While this was happening, Mario noticed Ren and his team. Ren was deep in thought while his team were chatting with each other.
"Hey, Ren," Mario called out.
"Huh? Oh, what's up, Mario?"
"You seem to be deep in thought. Is there something wrong?"
"No, it's just being a leader is much harder than I thought."
On the day of the failed trial, when Mario came out with Eclair, Ren approached him to ask a question. It was about the world specifically. Ever since he was reborn, he thought the whole world was a game, just like Bravestar Online, the most popular game back in his world. But the more he experienced this world and interacted with the people, the more he realized that these were not NPCs in a game. They were real, living people. People who were expecting him to save them from the waves.
This made him question how he did things. When he played Bravestar Online, heck, even in his personal life, he was a lone wolf. He only teamed up if it was vital and planned to do the same here. He completed quests independently while his team focused on cleaning up and picking up other quests. But after talking with them, courtesy of Peach's advice, he began to see things differently and tried to include them on his quests.
But it was harder than he thought as he learned his decisions can have consequences. He ordered an all-out attack against a weakened giant lizard on one quest. He thought it would be easy, but the lizard had other plans. Cornered, it activated an all-or-nothing skill that surrounded it with intense flames. Most of his team were agile enough to get away, except for one. The man was caught in the flames and had to be pulled out by his teammate. Ren managed to kill the lizard but felt guilty about his teammate's injury since he followed his orders.
Luckily, the man recovered without issue, but Ren has since understood the burden of being a leader, and he's been trying to learn more about his team and how to lead them.
"That's-a understandable, Ren. It can be a tough learning process, but your team still follows you, showing that you have potential. You just need to learn from your mistakes and not falter under pressure. They are looking towards you for stability." Mario said.
"You're right, Mario. Thanks for the pep talk," Ren said.
"You're welcome."
"By the way, have you heard anything about Motoyasu or spoken with him since the trial?"
"Um, no. Why?"
"Well, this is just what I heard. But he still insists that you and Luigi control Peach and Daisy's minds and that he will free them."
Peach, Daisy, and the three demis were shocked by this. Mario and Luigi just shook their heads in annoyance.
"Of course, he's doing that," Mario said annoyedly.
"Yeah, but supposedly, he's acquired a potion to free them. We don't think it does what he thinks it does, but you should be on the lookout for that. Who knows what that potion will do or how far he'll go to get Peach and Daisy to drink it," Itsuki explained.
"Thanks for the warning," Luigi said in gratitude.
As the group was walking down the halls, a nun approached them.
"Welcome, honored Sword and Bow heroes." The nun said with a bow.
Itsuki and Ren stood there until Ren coughed to get the nun's attention.
"And?"
"Hmm?"
The nun was confused until Ren tilted his head towards Luigi.
"Oh, and to what do we owe the displeasure of your company, Shield Demon?"
Ren and Itsuki were about to speak up, but Luigi stopped them and shook his head.
"I'm here to sync with the hourglass."
"Very well, and for you, honored heroes?"
Ren just sighed before answering.
"We need some holy water for our quests."
"I see. I'll have some of my sisters guide you then. Excuse me, the Sword and Bow heroes need holy water."
Two more nuns took Ren, Itsuki, and their teams away. The nun then turned to Luigi with a frown.
"Follow me."
The group followed the nun until they arrived at a giant hourglass.
"Mamamia. I wasn't expecting it to be so big," Luigi said.
"Yeah," Mario said in agreement.
"So, how do I-"
Luigi didn't finish his question when a beam of light came from the hourglass and hit the gem of his shield. His status screen then appeared and showed they had sixty hours until the wave struck.
"So two and a half more days then? That leaves just enough time to do one more quest and prepare."
Everyone nodded at Luigi's statement and turned to leave. But,
"Peach! Daisy! I've finally found you!"
Motoyasu and his team had just entered the room, and Motoyasu ran towards Peach and Daisy. He jumped at them with his arms open, but they sidestepped his attempt at a hug. He flew by and crashed face-first into a pillar.
"I guess he didn't learn the first time," Mario said.
Motoyasu got up while rubbing his face.
"Ouch, not again," he groaned. He then straightened up and faced Peach and Daisy. "It's finally good to see you two. I've been searching all over the kingdom for you."
"Why?" Peach asked.
"Come on, now. Do friends need a reason to see each other?"
"We're not friends," Daisy stated.
"How can you say that!? I've been nothing but kind to you and Peach, Daisy." Motoyasu said in a hurt tone.
"Yeah, right. If that's true, then why did you try to spear my Luigi?"
"That's the thing! He's not your Luigi!"
The Shield Team just rolled their eyes at this. Motoyasu was annoyed that Peach and Daisy weren't taking him seriously, but that's when he noticed Keel, Raphtalia, and Rifana.
"Holy crap! Who are those three beauties!? The slender and athletic archer, the well-rounded swordswoman, and finally, the warrior with 'mighty' assets! It's the lady fighter trifecta! And they're with Luigi and Fatty!? Just three more women to save." Motoyasu thought.
He then cleared his throat to explain.
"Daisy, you and Peach are under mind control. Luigi is using the evil powers of his shield to force you and Peach to be with him and his fat brother! I'm here to free you!"
"Wow, when did you learn to tell jokes?" Daisy asked.
"It's not a joke!"
"Then how do you explain before we came to this world? Even before coming here, we were in love with them," Peach explained as she held onto Mario's arm, much to Motoyasu's annoyance.
"That just proves his powers go beyond the shield! But worry not, I have the cure. Behold!"
Motoyasu pulled out two bright pink potions from his bag.
"These potions cure all sorts of mind control and possession spells. Drink them, and you will see I am right!"
Peach and Daisy looked at the potions and then at Motoyasu and Malty. While Motoyasu believed these potions cure mind control, Malty's grin said otherwise. That's when Peach had an idea.
"Okay, we'll drink your potions on three conditions."
"Okay! What are they?" Motoyasu asked.
"One: When we drink the potions and are entirely unchanged, you will stop pestering us with these wild accusations."
"The potions will work, but okay."
"Two: You will get down on your knees and sincerely apologize to Mario and Luigi."
"What!? But!?"
"If you don't agree, we don't drink!"
"Grr, fine then!"
"Good. And finally, Malty has to drink the potion first."
Motoyasu was shocked by this.
"Huh!? But why?"
"To make sure it's safe."
"But!?"
"It's okay, Sir Motoyasu."
Malty said as she uncorked a bottle and drank some of the potion. Everyone waited, but nothing happened.
"See? I'm fine because I'm not mind-controlled. Now, drink up, Lady Peach and Lady Daisy."
Peach and Daisy were suspicious about this but followed through and drank the potions. Everyone waited to see what would happen.
"Well? How do you feel?" Motoyasu asked.
"Fine, I'm not mind-controlled," Peach answered.
"Yes! It worked! Now we need you two to expose Mario and Luigi's-"
"You misunderstand," Peach said, interrupting Motoyasu. "I'm not, nor have ever been, mind controlled. And Mario and Luigi are innocent!"
Everyone, besides Luigi and his team, was shocked by this. Especially Malty.
"How!? The aphrodisiac should've worked!" She thought.
Malty had a powerful aphrodisiac potion made with Motoyasu's hair. It would make any woman who drank it lust after him uncontrollably and obey his every command. She was okay because she had drunk the counter potion earlier, but how were Peach and Daisy unaffected!? As she pondered this, she remembered something from when she was a part of Luigi's team.
"Their clothes!" She said to herself. "We need to take off their clothes!" She shouted.
Everyone looked at her in shock and confusion.
"Um, what I mean is, Sir Motoyasu! Mario and Luigi must be making them wear clothing that makes it impossible for the potion to work."
"I see. Then we need them to strip!" Motoyasu said.
"I'm not stripping here!" Peach shouted, with Daisy nodding in agreement.
"Not everything, just down to your underwear."
"I'm afraid that won't work, Sir Motoyasu," Malty said. "To make sure the potion works, we need to strip them naked!"
Peach and Daisy just glared at Malty as she had a shit-eating grin. Malty was already giddy imagining Peach and Daisy as naked obedient whores. Everyone can see that this is part of the plot to humiliate and enslave Peach and Daisy.
"You're right, Myne!"
Scratch that, almost everyone. Motoyasu ultimately agreed with Malty's reasoning.
"You can't be this stupid," Peach said.
"Don't worry, I'll do my best to protect your decency."
"I'm not stripping!"
"But!"
"But nothing! Her idea is idiotic, and you're even more of an idiot for agreeing to it!" Daisy shouted.
"But! But! Then I don't accept your earlier conditions! I won't follow them!" Motoyasu defiantly said.
"Fine. It's not like we needed your apology anyway. Let's go, everyone," Peach said.
Much to Motoyasu's and Malty's dismay, the group began to leave. Malty began to panic as she was supposed to capture Peach and Daisy to deprive Luigi of two allies.
"Sir Motoyasu! You have to save Lady Peach and Lady Daisy!" Malty shouted.
"Right! Forgive me, but this is for your own good!"
Motoyasu leaped forward and attempted to take off Peach's clothes.
"What are you doing!?" Peach yelled in shock.
"I'm trying to help you!" Motoyasu answered as he continued to try to take off Peach's clothes.
"Are you really this stupid!? GET OFF ME!"
Peach slapped Motoyasu hard enough to make him stumble backward.
"Peach, I was just trying to-"
"SHUT UP! How dare you!? You try to rip off my clothes against my will and still call Luigi and Mario rapists!? Have you no shame!? Or maybe you lack brains!"
"But, but, you need to-"
"I don't need to do anything! Why would you go through with that bratty princess's suggestion!?"
Malty was annoyed by Peach's words.
"Because she never lies to me," Motoyasu answered.
"Oh, for the love of. Of course, she lies! She lied at the trial, remember!?"
"What!? No, she didn't!"
"Yes, she did! Luigi never raped her!"
"That can't be true! You're just being tricked and manipulated by those bastards!"
"Oh, by the Star Spirits, please give me strength! Listen here, Motoyasu! Daisy and I are not being manipulated, mind-controlled, brainwashed, or whatever else that lying bitch says! We follow Mario and Luigi because we love them and have known them for years! They have saved my kingdom, world, and universe more times than I can count!"
"No way! They must be tricking you or playing the long con. Just trying to get your trust!"
"And how would you know!? Did you see them do it? Were you there when they fought the monsters trying to conquer or destroy my home? Have you ever visited the Mushroom Kingdom?"
"Um, no. But still!"
"But still, what!? How can you say such things when you don't know Mario or Luigi at all!?"
"Because Myne says-"
"So just because your girlfriend says something, it's true? Do you need her permission to use the restroom? To eat? Does she control everything in your life now!?"
"Um, well, not everything. I still fight, cook, carry the luggage, and earn money."
"And? What else?"
"Um, that's it. Since she's the princess, I let her do all the paperwork."
"So she controls the money and other important decisions while you do all the heavy lifting? Mamamia. The fact that you have no shame in admitting this proves you are the biggest moron I have ever met."
"What!? Peach, if you just let me explain!"
"No! Stop talking to me! It's too much to deal with you."
Peach turned away and ignored Motoyasu.
"Wait! Peach!"
Motoyasu tried to approach her, but Mario blocked his way.
"You heard Peach. It's best to respect her wishes."
"Out of my way, Fatty! I need to save Peach and Daisy from your vile magic!"
"Mamamia, you're such an idiot. Still, I won't let you get close to her after that stunt you pulled."
"I said get out of my way!"
Motoyasu tried to force Mario out of the way, but Mario pushed him back. Frustrated, Motoyasu pulled out his spear and attacked Mario. Mario easily dodged his thrust and grabbed the spear. He pulled Motoyasu forward and punched him in the face when he was close enough. Motoyasu was sent flying into a wall while the spear absorbed more of Mario's essence.
"Motoyasu!" His team of girls cried out.
"How dare you assault Lord Motoyasu!? I'll have you executed for this!" Malty threatened.
"Try it, bitch. Your mother has already allowed us to ignore your and your father's orders. And if you try to force us, I wonder how you plan to take on the fighters who killed the Tyrant Dragon." Peach said.
Luigi and the others got ready to fight as some knights came in to apprehend Mario. But they were already shaking in their boots, remembering Mario and Luigi's immense strength.
"Damn it!" Motoyasu shouted as he got up. He glared at Mario but then noticed Ren and Itsuki nearby. "Ren! Itsuki! Great timing! I need your help!"
"Help with what? Forcing Peach and Daisy to strip in front of everyone?" Ren said in a mocking tone.
"You don't understand! I'm trying to save them!"
"By humiliating them to satisfy some sick fantasy of yours?" Itsuki asked.
"No! No! NO! They're being manipulated by Mario and Luigi thanks to some evil clothing they are forced to wear. I need to strip them to break the spell!" Motoyasu said in his defense.
But Ren and Itsuki weren't buying it.
"Man, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard," Itsuki said.
"But that's what Myne said they were doing."
"Are you serious? Do you actually believe that?" Ren asked.
"Myne never lies to me!"
"Oh, Motoyasu. Do you have a brain in your head, or just the one in your pants? There's no way that is true!"
"But! But!"
"And besides, if we were going to help someone, it would be Mario and Luigi since you just sexually assaulted Peach. A major crime in this kingdom!" Itsuki explained.
Ituski's statement took aback Motoyasu, while Malty was furious about how the situation had played out. Not only did her potion fail, but now the other two heroes would help the Shield Demon and his annoying team. She furiously scratched her head as it wasn't supposed to be like this.
While this was happening, Mario was curious about what the spear had done earlier. Now that Ren and Itsuki were here, he decided to ask about it.
"Hey, Ren, Ituski."
"Yeah?" They both said.
"You saw what the spear did earlier, right?" The two nodded. "Do you have any idea what that was?"
"Hmm, no idea, but it did look similar to when we absorb monster parts to strengthen our weapons," Itsuki answered, with Ren nodding in agreement.
Motoyasu heard this and had an idea.
"You mean, I have Mario's power now. Ha ha! Now I can make you pay for your crimes, you bastard!" Motoyasu cheered as he held out the spear. "Make me stronger than Mario!" He ordered.
Mario and the other got ready to fight, but nothing happened. Motoyasu was dumbfounded and shook the spear.
"Come on! Work! Work already, damn it!"
Everyone just stared at him with a mix of disbelief and pity.
"Well, it doesn't appear to be doing anything. So there's nothing to worry about then. We best be off. Still got a quest to do before the wave strikes," Mario said.
"Good luck!"
"Can you let Eclair know I'm ready for the next lesson?"
Itsuki and Ren said. Luigi nodded to Ren as they left. Ren and Itsuki were also about to go, but Motoyasu stopped them.
"Hey, wait! I need to ask you two something!"
"If it's about getting revenge on Mario and Luigi, you can forget it!" Itsuki bluntly stated.
Motoyasu didn't like this but ignored it for now.
"Fine, then! But I want to know something about the weapons."
"Fine, what is it?" Ren asked, not wanting to deal with any more of Motoyasu's shenanigans.
"Is your weapon screen fuzzy?"
"Huh? Fuzzy?"
Ren and Itsuki looked at each other in confusion.
"No, mine's fine."
"Mine too."
They answered.
"Seriously? Then why is mine messed up?" Motoyasu asked.
"Not sure. Is it that bad?" Itsuki asked.
"Yeah. It's getting hard for me to read the menu." Motoyasu pulled up his status screen and was shocked by what he saw. "Ah, damn it! It got worse!"
Ren was pondering this when he had an idea.
"When did this start happening?" Ren asked.
"Um, let me think. Hmm, oh! It started happening on the night we arrived!" Motoyasu answered.
"Really? And when did it start getting worse?" Itsuki asked.
"Um, right after the trial for Rabier's death."
Ren and Itsuki thought about this and came to the same conclusion.
"So, it gets worse every time Mario beats you up?" Ren asked.
"Yes," Motoyasu growled out through clenched teeth.
"More specifically, every time the spear absorbs more of Mario's essence," Itsuki added.
"Huh? What are you getting at?" Motoyasu asked in a worried tone.
"Well, every time Mario beats you up, he looks to his hand and then to the spear. I didn't give it much thought before, but I think he noticed the spear absorbing his essence and was confused about why it did that," Itsuki explained.
"And we now know it isn't making you any stronger. In fact, according to you, it's making it harder for you to use the spear." Ren added.
"But then, it's, um, what are you getting at?"
"What we're getting at, Motoyasu, is that maybe the spear is absorbing Mario's essence to compare the two of you. And it seems like the spear likes Mario better, not that I disagree," Itsuki answered.
"Huh? Then, that means!?"
"You might not be the Spear Hero much longer, Motoyasu," Ren said. "Can't say I'm surprised. With everything you've done up to this point and then assaulting Peach, I'm more surprised you still have the spear. If it were me, I would've switched to Mario already."
"Man, that sucks. Reborn as a hero and then lost it in a couple of weeks. That must be a new record or something. Welp, later, Motoyasu. Enjoy being the Spear Hero while you still can!" Itsuki said as he and Ren left.
Motoyasu and his team were the only ones left now. Motoyasu looked to the spear in desperation.
"They're wrong. You wouldn't leave me, right?" He asked the spear, but only received silence. Motoyasu gritted his teeth and began to slam his fist into the ground. "No, god damn it! It wasn't supposed to be like this! I am a hero! Everything is supposed to work out for me! It's all because of that fat bastard Mario! If only he weren't here! Damn it! Damn it! DAMN IT!"
Motoyasu's team just stared in shock, pity, and disappointment. Most of them joined because it would grant them fame and fortune. But if Motoyasu was no longer a hero, it made no sense to stick with him. Two of his girls, Lesty and Elena, were already thinking of a way out. Malty, meanwhile, was shocked to learn that the spear may reject Motoyasu if Mario isn't dealt with soon. She would make sure to report this to her father.
