Chapter 60: Family Ties
The sun dipped low in the sky, casting a warm golden hue over Konoha as Sakura prepared for an unexpected family reunion. Mei Terumi, the Mizukage and her cousin, had expressed a desire to speak with her privately. Given the recent discussions of alliances and Sakura's growing role in the shinobi world, she was curious about Mei's thoughts on the developing situation—and her own life.
As Sakura entered the room set aside for their meeting, she found Mei already there, her expression a blend of seriousness and curiosity. The Mizukage was dressed in her usual attire, which accentuated her authoritative presence but also revealed a familial warmth that had always been a part of her personality.
"Sakura," Mei greeted with a warm smile, her eyes sparkling with a hint of mischief. "It's good to see you."
"Thank you, Mei," Sakura replied, returning the smile. "I'm glad you could make it."
They exchanged pleasantries before Mei took a seat across from Sakura, leaning forward slightly, her expression turning more earnest. "I wanted to talk to you about something important—something I believe affects our family."
Sakura felt her heart race, unsure what to expect. "What is it?"
"I've heard rumors about your betrothal to Zabuza." Mei's tone was playful yet probing. "It seems like quite the arrangement."
Sakura's cheeks flushed, both from surprise and embarrassment. "It's—well, it's not an ordinary betrothal. It's complicated." She paused, gathering her thoughts. "Zabuza is protective of me, and our relationship has grown in ways I never expected. It's... different."
Mei raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "Different, you say? Zabuza Momochi, the legendary rogue shinobi, and you? A light in the darkness? How does that work?"
"Believe me, I'm just as surprised as you are," Sakura replied, her voice steady despite the awkwardness of the topic. "But he respects me, and I respect him. We're trying to navigate this—whatever it is—together."
A smirk crossed Mei's face. "You've always been drawn to the storm, haven't you? First with Sasuke, and now Zabuza? Perhaps it runs in our blood."
Sakura chuckled, appreciating Mei's light-heartedness. "I guess so. I don't exactly pick the easiest paths."
Just then, Kizashi Haruno, Sakura's father, entered the room. His expression was one of amusement, and he seemed to catch the tail end of the conversation. "Did I hear someone mention Zabuza?" he asked, grinning widely. "What a character! I've always wondered how a girl like you ended up with a man like him."
Sakura's face burned with embarrassment, but she couldn't help but smile at her father's teasing. "Dad, can we not?" she said, shaking her head in mock exasperation. "This isn't exactly the conversation I expected to have with my family."
Kizashi laughed, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "Oh, come on! It's not every day your daughter gets engaged to a former rogue ninja! What do you think I'm going to do? Hide my excitement?"
"Excitement?" Mei chimed in, feigning shock. "Or are you just eager for more stories about his past? Because let me tell you, he has some wild ones."
"Both, honestly," Kizashi replied, taking a seat beside Mei. "But mostly, I'm proud of you, Sakura. You're becoming someone extraordinary, and your choices reflect that. Zabuza may be rough around the edges, but I see the way he looks at you. He's protective, and I appreciate that."
Sakura felt a wave of warmth wash over her, grateful for her father's support. "Thank you, Dad. That means a lot."
Mei glanced between them, a thoughtful expression on her face. "Just remember, you come from a family of strong women, Sakura. Your choices reflect not only your heart but also your lineage. We've faced challenges, and you have the strength to overcome anything."
"Exactly," Kizashi added, nodding. "And if Zabuza ever gives you any trouble, you know I'm just a call away. The Haruno name carries weight."
Sakura laughed softly, feeling the love and support from her family envelop her. "I appreciate both of you. Zabuza and I are figuring things out together. I know it's unconventional, but maybe that's just how our world is now."
"Then we'll support you in whatever path you choose," Mei declared, her eyes shining with confidence. "As your cousin and as a Kage, I stand by you."
"Thank you, Mei," Sakura replied, her heart swelling with gratitude. "Your support means the world to me."
With the conversation shifting to lighter topics, the three of them spent the evening reminiscing about their childhood and sharing stories of family ties that bound them. Laughter filled the room, and for a moment, the pressures of the world outside faded into the background.
As the sun set and darkness fell over Konoha, Sakura felt a renewed sense of purpose. With her family beside her, she was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
