I wanted to do a little slice of life story with realistic issues and thoughts. I figured it would be a nice change from the heavy stuff I usually do. So, this time, there won't be anything too crazy or heavy. Just a cute story about a small family and how they come together to overcome problems. (The title stands for "Family and Faith") Enjoy!

Worries
"I do not understand why I had to come along. He never has anything life-altering to speak about."
"So, yer tellin' me that last mission we went on wasn't well needed? Deserved, even?"
"Jesse," Hanzo sighed, taking a sip of coffee. Their last mission ended up being a lot easier than they anticipated, so they just relaxed and enjoyed their peace for most of it. "You know it is not like that."
"I know, darlin'. You just wanna get back to her, but we're going to have to let her make decisions on her own without us breathing down her neck," Jesse said through a plume of smoke.
"And you trust her not to be rebellious while she is on her own?"
Jesse took a deep breath in with a nod while trying to say the word 'yes' verbally. He was having a hard time putting the letters together.
"See? Even you do not believe she should be left to her own devices."
"What do you want me to do? Tell Winston 'no' when he literally pays us? Bring her with us?"
Hanzo nearly choked on his coffee. "With how she feels about Overwatch? How laughable."
"All we have to do is wait an' see if she makes good decisions. We'll deal with whatever when we get back."
It was a comfortable Monday morning in Gibraltar with not a cloud in the sky. Sixty degrees made it sweater weather, and it was a different and welcoming change to the January climate they were used to back home in Ogden. While they were both looking forward to being in air that didn't hurt their faces, they also wanted to be home, enjoying well-needed family time.
Friday evening, Jesse was in his backyard, sitting by the fire pit when the screen on his prosthetic arm lit up.
"Jesse McCree. It's been a while."
"Aw, hell!" Jesse complained, cigar hanging from the corner of his mouth. "Athena…"
"I know, you do not want to leave home, but you have been requested in Gibraltar."
"Just me?" Jesse asked with an exhale of smoke.
"Mister Shimada has been requested as well."
"Athena…" Jesse sighed. Both of them leaving home wasn't ideal! "Can't one of us stay?"
"You know it is not up to me."
"And when do we need to be there?" Jesse pinched the bridge of his nose. If Winston wanted them both there, there was a good chance most of Overwatch would be there, meaning he couldn't call someone up to keep her company while they were gone.
"Monday. All you need to do is get to SLC, and I will make arrangements for transportation. And no, you can't call them. They have to be there, too."
Jesse sighed. Welp. There went his plans to keep everyone happy. "And when do you expect us to be there?" There was no way he was going to hear the end of this, from either of them.
"Ideally, within the next few hours. However, I do understand you have a home life that comes before anything. I will give you time to sort out your affairs. Try to be there at nine AM tomorrow."
They usually only went on jobs one at a time, with the exception of the handful of times when Winston wanted most, if not all members of Overwatch gathered. And for some reason, it was beginning to happen more frequently, meaning there was activity somewhere threatening their positions. Hopefully today, they'd find the reason why and get the opportunity to put a stop to it.
"What do you think he wants to talk about?" Jesse asked, taking a drag of his cigar.
"Talon, probably," Hanzo grunted. He missed her. It wasn't her fault she was born with her ability, yet she was cursed to bear the burden of it. All he wanted to do was guide her in the right direction, but she had a habit of falling into the wrong crowds.
"C'mon, honeybun," Jesse stood from the table and extended a hand. "I know yer thinkin' 'bout 'er, but we gotta focus on work for now. She's seventeen. She'll be alright on her own."
"I am not taking your hand! Not here," Hanzo said gruffly, standing from the table and pushing his chair in.
"There's nobody here but us and strangers, Han," Jesse threw an arm around him and was immediately shrugged away. "We're gonna have to tell people eventually!"
"I do not have to tell anyone anything."
Twenty-six years they've been together. And in those twenty-six years, they've experienced a full, loving life. While doing his own thing, Jesse ran into Hanzo one fateful day in Japan and couldn't stay away since. It was an amusing story, Jesse tried so hard to win him over. It took him the better part of a year for Han to even look in his direction, but when he did?
Since then, Jesse had been alongside him through all his ups and downs, his dark times and the opposite. He knew him when he was unburdened, and he knew what he carried on his shoulders now. Just as he knew Han, it was vice versa. Han was with him while he was with Deadlock, he was with him when he was a gun for hire, and he was with him from the start of his Blackwatch slash Overwatch career. While he'd always been in the background, living his life separately while Jesse did his own thing, they always returned to one another, no matter where they were.
Their love was faithful and strong.
After a while, Jesse convinced Hanzo to join Overwatch. It took a lot of persuading since his estranged brother was a member, but with great patience and a small bribe here and there, he reluctantly agreed under the condition that they keep their relationship to themselves. Of course, Jesse complained, saying something along the lines of being proud to be with him or whatever sappy emotion-filled speech he gave, but eventually conceded.
Hanzo's reasoning was valid; he didn't want everyone in their business, especially the… nosier, chattier ones. There were only five members who knew, one of them only knowing because they'd gotten careless and slipped up when Jesse was in Blackwatch, another was an old friend of his who did stealth work around the world, two others were really good friends they could call on when they needed help or just a break for a weekend; it worked out in everyone's favor. The last was Winston, who'd known since the beginning and agreed to keep it to himself.
However, Jesse hated keeping him a secret! It's been eight years, and all he could do was pretend they were just good friends! He wondered if anyone else caught wind, like Jack or Ana, and if they did, he was glad they didn't say anything… you know, for Han's sake.
It was an unspoken rule for everyone that if they needed to reach Hanzo, they could contact Jesse. He wasn't sure when exactly that happened, but it was a comfortable rule to have, and it'd been like that since a little bit after he joined. Han liked to keep to himself most of the time. He didn't really open himself up to anyone except for two people, and he barely wanted to open up to them! Perhaps his reserved and stoic personality scared the rest of the members away. Perhaps that's exactly what he wanted. But wasn't it so obvious? Maybe not, seeing how they went on missions separately, but Jesse was sure some of their interactions around the others sometimes looked a little…
If there was anyone they needed to be careful around, it was Hana. She was always fluttering around them with her phone out, and it made Han nervous. She never once mentioned anything about it, but Jesse was sure she suspected something! It was only a matter of time before she found out and blabbed to everyone! But… if there was anything Jesse wanted most in the world, it was to be open to everyone in Overwatch about his relationship with Hanzo and their daughter. Sure, when they were home, they didn't hide it, but they were surrounded by strangers who didn't know them and couldn't speculate. Maybe he secretly wanted her to find out. Maybe he wanted to hear the speculations of their friends. Maybe a little more acceptance would make Han happy, whether he knew it or not.
This time, neither of them wanted to be away from home, but duty called. That Friday evening, Jesse left the solitude of the fire pit and went back into the warmth of their house to tell Han they were needed and found themselves on a flight to Gibraltar no more than twelve hours later. There was protest, much, much protest, and not just from Han. It made them both sad, especially knowing she didn't want them to go, and it only worried them wondering what sort of trouble she was going to get into while they were away.
"You know if we are here, everyone else is, too. The last thing I want is for someone to see us and start asking questions," Hanzo said. "Make note of this coffee shop. I like it and would like to return."
"Will do, honey pie," Jesse said as he ashed his cigar. "Guess we better head on up."
Hanzo watched him toss his serape dramatically and put his hat on. How did he ever end up with his polar opposite? He cracked a slight smile. "Taking advantage of being away?"
"You get on my ass 'bout smokin' around her, so I thought I'd enjoy it while I can," Jesse shrugged. "Better than sitting at the fire pit in the dead cold."
"Complaining about the fire pit in the wintertime? Is that not its very purpose? Do you not even light it?"
"Sometimes, but other times I'm too lazy."
"You must grow out of that," Hanzo said as he fixed Jesse's collar. "It is not a good image to project. We do have an impressionable mind at home."
"Han, she's seventeen, she's already got her personality an' traits and such," Jesse grinned at him. "You're so adorable when you worry."
"I cannot help but worry about someone I love."
"Who are her parents? We are, so don't worry," Jesse snuck a quick kiss, risking an angry Han. "We raised her well."
"You are right," Hanzo chose to ignore his attempt at affection. If he didn't, he'd get swept up in it quickly! "We did our best and molded her for society. It is not her fault she has to carry the burden that she does."
"Jesse! Hanzo! Sak pase?"
They looked over to see Baptiste and Niran walking toward them arm in arm. "Jesse!" Hanzo sneered, glaring at his cowboy. This was why he didn't want to show affection in public!
"Oh, relax, it's just these two!" Jesse cheesed, greeting them both.
"Be glad it was just them and no one else," Hanzo said through gritted teeth.
"Still undercover, I see," Niran laughed, holding onto Bap's arm. Those two had been together forever, so why they didn't just tell the rest of Overwatch was beyond him! He guessed he understood wanting the privacy, but it would only last for so long. He was surprised it already lasted as long as it did!
"When are you guys going to go public?" Bap asked. He was happy to be out and carefree with his lotus. No one should have to hide their love!
"Never." Hanzo said, almost coldly. "I like my peace."
"Who's to say anyone's going to bother you?" Bap wondered why it was such a secret, but whatever floated their boat, he guessed!
"Hmph," Hanzo dismissed the topic, wishing to head up to the watchpoint and get it over with. Who would bother them? Everyone would, obviously!
"Don't mind him," Jesse said, putting an arm around him. "He's just missin' home is all."
"How is she, by the way?" Niran asked, completely used to Hanzo's shortness. He was particularly fond of their daughter and always looked forward to the days they were called to hang out. "I'm sorry we couldn't go and stay with her for the time being."
"Oh, it's fine," Jesse drawled. "I'm sure it's nothin'. We'll see what Winston has to say, an' go back home. You guys get a room around here?"
"Yeah, just up the street," Bap pointed a thumb in the direction of their hotel. "Bua hadn't been to this side of town, so I wanted to take him around over the weekend."
"It is nice. I do not like the English, but Gibraltar is… different." Hanzo looked around at the sights, thinking perhaps it would have been nice to bring her here. She may not care for Overwatch, but she'd appreciate the scenery.
"We should bring her one day. Right, Han?" Jesse rubbed his arm knowingly. "She'd like Gibraltar." He wondered why they didn't just bring her and put her up at a hotel nearby and kicked himself for not thinking of that before they left! He packed the idea away for next time.
"I believe she would, don't you think, Bap?" Niran asked, squeezing his arm.
"If anything, she'd like the weather. Can't imagine how she feels in all that snow," Bap joined them in a chuckle. He shared in his lotus' fondness for their daughter, as they shared common interests. Though, it was incredibly amusing how much like Hanzo she was. Same distant, stoic demeanor, same permanent frown, same distaste for human interaction. Sometimes he goofily wondered if he actually fathered her!
Baptiste and Jesse had an… interesting first encounter several years ago. After breaking from the shackles of Talon, he'd formed an alliance with Jesse—after proving his loyalty—and was embarrassed to say he even had a crush on him in the beginning! After a while, they became good friends, learning about his daughter after helping them out of a little scrape. It was then Jesse had evidently seen how well they interacted and informally made him her babysitter, going as far as making him the godfather… after a lengthy discussion with Hanzo.
As the years passed, Hanzo softened toward Baptiste and began to consider him a really close friend, and when Niran joined Overwatch and quickly became a pair with Baptiste, it raised a bunch of flags in his head. Jesse had to convince him to trust that Baptiste wouldn't pick someone unworthy, and as time progressed, he saw the genuineness and love Niran exuded, almost naturally! If there were any two people he wanted around their daughter, it was them. They were such positive influences, and she'd already learned so much from them, they didn't know how they would have survived without their kindness.
"To answer your question, she is well," Hanzo said to Niran. "She has asked about you."
"Me, or my biolight?" Niran laughed heartily.
"You, but knowin' her…" Jesse couldn't hold back his grin. Of the two of them, he wanted to say Niran was her favorite. As much as she loved them both, she was much more interested in Niran's way of doing things.
"She means your biolight." Hanzo allowed himself to indulge in friendly conversation before having to put on his façade for Overwatch. He would admit, it was tiresome continuing to hide his relationship, but he just didn't have it in him to go through the initial burst of questions they would surely have once they found out. It wasn't like he was an overly affectionate person anyway, so it ended up being easier to just tell people they were friends. "I am sure she misses you all the same."Hanzo
"Ha! Thanks for trying to soften the blow, but she is your daughter after all!" Niran said, nudging Hanzo with his elbow.
The corners of Han's lips curled up ever so slightly. It was true, she took after him a lot, and because of that, they were really close. Perhaps it was the weight of the burden they both shared that brought them together as she got older. He loved her dearly. "After we get this meeting over with, you two should stop by for a few days. Unless you have other plans."
"We will always make time for our inti wawa, right, Bap?" Niran beamed, excited to head to the States after this. Most of the time, she wanted to spend time with them in Haiti, so he was excited to be in her comfort zone for once. "Plus, it's been so long since I've seen your home, I'm excited!"
"He's right," Bap nodded. They were always such a mystery to everyone, it was nice to see what their life was like at home. "We'll be more than happy to travel back with you guys."
"Very well," Hanzo said wearily, walking in the direction of the watchpoint. "I shall call her and let her know ahead of time."
"Speaking of letting her know ahead of time," Bap said, walking with them. "How did she take being left alone for the weekend?"
"She wasn't a happy camper, that's for sure," Jesse snickered, taking a drag of his cigar. "But we promised we would be back no later than Wednesday."
"And she was okay with that?" Niran knew her far too well to think she'd be okay with being alone for so long. Especially with how temperamental she'd been lately! Surely, she would use this freedom as an excuse to find something to get into. They could only hope it wasn't dangerous.
"We didn't have much of a choice in the matter. It is work," Jesse thought about taking that damn screen off his arm, but Athena would only find another way to contact him. Probably hack into his TV during family time or something.
"And Jesse keeps insisting she is seventeen and can make her own rational decisions," Hanzo complained. It wasn't as if he didn't trust her, he just worried for her. She'd always been an outcast and secretly wanted to fit in, so she'd have whoever accepted her. He didn't want her to fall into the wrong hands.
"I only mean we need to stop treatin' her like a little kid, Han," Jesse said as they approached the lift that took them up to the peak. He tossed his cigar before scanning his badge and rolled his eyes at how slow the doors were to open. "I mean, she's proved time an' time again that she's a good kid. Ya gotta stop hangin' onto her past mistakes."
"He's right," Bap chimed in, letting Bua step in first. "She's incredibly smart and has a good head on her shoulders. Don't worry so much."
"You are right," Hanzo said with a sigh. Could this lift move any slower?
"Besides, if anything happens, you have us!" Niran chirped. He loved the experience he gained when he was with her. Even though he wasn't around when she was younger, he still loved the idea of having a mind to mold into something great, just like they did with her. It made him want a kid of his own with Bap, but they'd never really talked about that! How would he even bring something like that up?
"We'll keep that in mind."
"Hey, did I ever tell you 'bout that time yer man got us out of a sticky situation some years back?" Jesse was proud of his choice to have Baptiste in their lives. And it was a bonus when he got with the pretty medic. He wasn't prettier than Han, though. He began his story as the insanely slow lift took them up to the watchpoint. Had it gotten slower? He didn't think he'd get through the entire story before reaching the top!
The doors opened to a familiar entryway, greeted by a large chunk of Overwatch members doing their own thing. While Baptiste and Niran quickly blended with the group and started chatting with everyone, Hanzo immediately wanted to retreat to his designated room and shut out all of the noise but was caught by an energetic Hana.
"You still have that grumpy look on your face! I would have thought you'd have cheered up by now!" Hana said, sucking on a lollipop and scanning the two of them. Stoic, as usual. Something was fishy between these two and she was going to figure out what! They were always together, and everyone had to contact him through Jesse! She'd go as far as saying they were dating, but that couldn't be it, right? Maybe they really were just good friends.
"There is nothing in life to be cheerful about," Hanzo grunted, brushing past her and disappearing into another room. What he said was a complete lie, as he could quickly name two things that made his life worth living. However, that was nobody's business.
"Hana, nice t'see you again," Jesse said with a nod, scanning the room. There were a lot of guns here, Vivian, Jack, Fareeha, Lena, and even a few shields, Reinhardt and Zarya. Not to mention whoever was in the few break rooms. "Got any idea what this is about?"
"No idea. Got any idea what that's about?" Hana asked, pointing in Hanzo's direction. She saw him through the doorway sitting at a table by himself on his phone with a stressed look on his face. "I didn't think he could look any more bothered!" She nudged Jesse. "You guys are good friends, right? What's up with him?"
A very good question indeed! "I dunno, he was fine a minute ago." Jesse couldn't help the part of him that wanted to make sure he was okay. She was right, he hadn't looked that bothered in a while, and he only got like that when it had something to do with… "I'll go talk to him."
Hana watched Jesse go into the room and sit across from him at the table. Whatever they were talking about was clearly serious, especially seeing how he'd just gotten up to close the door! "Hmmm…"
Jesse followed Han into one of the break rooms and sat across from him, glad he'd gone into an empty room.
"She will not pick up," Hanzo said as soon as Jesse sat down. He fiddled with his phone, contemplating calling again, but he'd already called twice and was jumping to the wildest conclusions!
"Aw, hell," Jesse said, getting up to close the door. He never knew who was listening.
"I have called twice, now. She is supposed to always take our calls," Hanzo was full of worry, and all he wanted was to just go home and be with her! "What if she is off doing something she should not be?"
"Han, listen to me," Jesse said, sitting back down and taking his hands. "Didja take the time difference into account? It's one AM back home; she's probably sleepin', okay? Just send her a text and she'll respond in the morning."
"Please," Hanzo scoffed. "She has become a night owl with the help of her godparents. There is no way she is not awake right now. Especially since she is taking a break from her studies until we return. What teenager would not stay up late?"
"Well, darlin'," Jesse squeezed his hands reassuringly. "All we can do now is wait. We'll give her another call or two in a few hours. In the meantime, shoot her a text."
"Can you not?" Hanzo asked exasperatedly. "You know she responds better to you for some reason."
"I told you, ya need to come up with a better approach," Jesse chuckled. "She may respond better to me, but she's far closer to you. Dare I say you might even be the favorite!"
"I will not argue with you there," Hanzo always felt at ease when he spoke with his partner. Plus, the compliment he just gave would always make him feel good. "We both have different strengths that she responds to. No need to categorize a favorite."
That moment, Athena sounded over the speakers informing everyone to head into the meeting room for a debrief.
"Let's get this over with, honeybun."
"No pet names here!" Hanzo barked, getting up and opening the door to a startled Hana. "What are you doing?" He asked sternly. Was she eavesdropping?
"Nothing! Just heading to the meeting! See you there!" She said, skipping away with relief. He didn't seem like he knew she was trying to listen in on their conversation, but it wasn't like she could make out much anyway. All she caught was that he'd called someone twice and they wouldn't answer. Who was it, and how did Jesse know this person?
The meeting was about as eventful as Jesse assumed it would be. According to the mole they had planted in Talon, there was going to be an attempt to make a move on Overwatch and everyone needed to be on their toes. From what he understood, they were trying to target the base again, but why? With all of them there, did they understand how badly it would end for them? If they were bold enough to attack the watchpoint again, that only meant they had a trick up their sleeve. But with more thought… he was pretty confident they knew they had a mole and wanted everyone there. If that was the case, they must have had something worth bringing out of hiding.
"I am not looking forward to spending the next few weeks hiding out here," Vivian said from her seat next to Jesse. She was sure he didn't want to be there just as much as she didn't.
"Same here," Jesse agreed. "Looks like you're gonna hafta find a dog sitter."
"Yeah, Murphy's not gonna be too happy with me," she let out a short laugh.
"I know that feelin' all too well," Jesse grew frustrated with the timing of all this. Han may have been overly worried, but his caution was in the right place. While she was almost an adult, she still needed some guidance. Baptiste and Niran were amazing influences, but they couldn't be around twenty-four-seven. And since they had to be here with the rest of them, he had no one he could call to keep her company.
"Got a pet?" Vivian figured making small talk was better than listening to Winston tell everyone that Talon was onto them for the millionth time. Besides, she didn't get to talk to Jesse often.
"Something like that," he grinned. How would she take it if she knew he was thinking of her as a little puppy? He could never tell her.
"Got any pictures?" She could see him on a farm with a golden retriever or another big dog. What kind of life did he live outside of Overwatch? She knew he was good friends with Hanzo, but that was about it.
Jesse wasn't expecting that! Of course, he had tons of pictures! But they were of Han and their daughter and he couldn't just show them to her! He knew Vivian would be discreet, but he wasn't sure how Han would feel. "I surprisingly don't. Weird?"
"Not a picture guy, huh?"
"I prefer to live in the moment."
"Well, you have to show me one day. I imagine you with a big dog, like a Great Dane or something like that," the more she thought of it, a golden retriever wasn't quite the right fit.
A Great Dane? They were handsome dogs, but if he considered getting a dog, he'd get a Husky. "I'll keep that in mind." He stole a glance at Han who was sitting across the room watching him. He wondered how he would react if he said he wanted to tell Vivian.
Hanzo was upset with the new knowledge that he would have to be away from his daughter for an unforeseen amount of time. They should have just brought her and put her up in a hotel nearby! He cursed himself for being doubtful and only wished to quickly resolve this so he and Jesse could go home.
"I cannot stand this!" Hanzo paced back and forth in Jesse's room, unable to contain his frustration. They were sitting ducks until Winston got more information and put together a mission, and the day had already passed and it was well into the middle of the night! "Not only have we not heard anything from Winston, we also have not heard anything from our daughter! She should be awake by now!"
"Han…"
It had been a long day in Gibraltar, and spirits were low throughout the entire base. No one wanted to be away from home this long because they all had personal lives and weren't yet adjusted to whatever time difference they were experiencing. Leave it to Talon to ruin things as usual. It was sort of nice being able to catch up with the rest of the crew, but Jesse could only think of his family and how they were feeling.
The worst part about it was that he had to wait until late at night to talk to Han like he wanted! To avoid any suspicion or unwanted questions, they usually kept their distance while with the crew and waited for everyone to go into their rooms for the evening. At that point, either he or Han would sneak into the other's room until the morning. This time, Han beat him to it and was currently stressing himself out.
"Do you not agree?" Hanzo stopped pacing, crossing his arms as Jesse lie on his bed without a care in the world. "How can you not be worried at a time like this?"
"Of course, I agree, honeypie," Jesse sat up and pulled on Han's arm, making him sit on the edge of the bed. "I'm worried just as much as you are, but there ain't much we can do right now."
"Oh, yes there is!" Han stood abruptly, snatching his jacket. "I can leave and go make sure she is okay! I recommend no one try and stop me, lest they wish to meet the tip of my arrow!"
Jesse stood up and held him by the shoulders. "Darlin', I get it. She's all we have. I wanna protect her just as much as you do, but we should think rationally."
"Think rationally?" Hanzo said with disgust. "When it involves our child, all rationality ceases to exist."
"I get that, I do," Jesse held his face. "But do you realize how shitty things will be if you leave Gibraltar for no reason?"
"Do you realize how shitty things will be if something turns out to be wrong and I do not go back?"
"Please," Jesse pulled him in for an embrace. "Fer me, just give it just a little more time, okay?" He kissed him gently, feeling his worries slowly evaporate.
"I cannot…" Hanzo was a weak man when it came to his cowboy, but his daughter was top priority.
"You can," Jesse kissed him again, easing him. "I'm not askin' you to completely disregard the possibility of danger, I'm just askin' you to give it time. We'll get this mission from Boss and go from there, okay?"
"Do you think he will let us leave? He does not need us if he has everyone else here," he said as his phone buzzed.
"That's probably her right there," Jesse let him go so he could check his phone and saw the relief wash over him. "Good news?"
"Thank God," Hanzo slumped down on the bed, rereading the text before passing the phone to Jesse. "She's alright."
Jesse sat next to him and read her message aloud. "'Sorry I missed your check-in. I think there is something wrong with my phone.' Well, there's yer confirmation right there," Jesse put an arm around him. "See?"
"I should call her, right?" Hanzo looked to Jesse for more reassurance, happy when he nodded. "Good." He dialed her number on speakerphone, furrowing his brow when she didn't answer by the third ring. She just texted! She should still be near her phone!
"Dad?"
"Sorry to bug, ya, hun," Jesse said into the phone. "But your dad was worried and just wanted to hear yer voice."
"You were worried about me?" She asked with a small giggle.
"Now, you know it wasn't me, darlin'," Jesse couldn't keep the silly grin off his face. "It was yer alter ego." They shared an inside joke that she was Han's other half, or in funnier terms, his clone.
"Alter ego?" Hanzo raised a brow. "What is the meaning of that?" He huffed.
"Relax, Dad. It's a good thing."
"Well, we just wanted to check on ya, hun," Jesse said, wanting to let her have her time to herself.
"Where are you? You do not sound like you are at home," Hanzo knew her more than she thought, and she sounded like she was up to no good!
"I think you're just being paranoico," she enjoyed pressing his buttons.
"Paranoid? Hmph," Hanzo scoffed. "How amusing."
"I'll talk some sense into him, hun," Jesse snickered. "You know he's always been a little loco!"
"He makes life entertaining."
"My job is to keep you safe, not entertained." Hanzo was in full father mode. There was a voice in the back of his head telling him something wasn't right, but he couldn't put his finger on it.
"I am plenty safe," she said firmly. "Don't worry about me. I know how you guys can get."
"It is my duty to worry about you, ko," Hanzo matched her sternness.
"'Ko'? Not even going to call me by my name?"
"I am calling you what you are, a child." Hanzo realized he came off a bit harsher than he intended, but she should have been used to that by now. "You are to always answer our calls no matter what time it is."
"But what if I'm sleeping?" She knew he was just agitated from being worried, but still! Sometimes she hated how tough he was on her!
"Then you will wake up."
"Han, c'mon, give 'er a break," Jesse rubbed his shoulders as he softly scolded her. "She said there was something wrong with her phone. As you can hear, she's fine an' well."
"Yeah, Otōsan," she snickered. "But I gotta go. Kuyaykim."
"Did… did she just hang up on me?" Hanzo fumed, looking at his lock screen. He whipped his head up at Jesse, who was doing his best to stifle a laugh. "What could she possibly have to do around the house that is so urgent?"
"Honeybun," Jesse took his phone and tossed it to the side, pulling him down onto the bed. "She's fine. Don't you feel better after hearin' her voice?"
"We cannot do this here," Hanzo said halfheartedly while Jesse kissed his neck.
"Oh, darlin'," Jesse hummed, lifting Han's black shirt over his head and revealing a delectable, tattooed chest. "Don'tcha miss this? It's been a while since we had some alone time."
"Of course, I do, but if you have forgotten," he let him do what he wanted, relaxing a bit as he fondled his chest. "We are not alone."
"Yeah, but who's gonna come in here? No one," Jesse crooned, meeting his lips. "It's just us."
Hanzo reluctantly gave in, pulling his crisp white shirt out of his jeans. He wanted to distract himself from the foreboding feeling that something was amiss. It was clear with them all gathered at the base, but something was telling him it was deeper than that.
"I see those gears of yours turnin' in that pretty little head," Jesse murmured into his ear. He worked his hands down his body, undoing the button on his pants. "Just focus on me."
"Very well," Hanzo shut off his brain and relished in the feeling of his lips against his skin, trailing down his torso and making him feel things only he was capable of. Unfortunately, his feelings of arousal were cut short by a continuous buzzing coming from the door. "Jesse!" He hissed, pushing him off.
"Aw, hell!" Jesse rolled out of bed and fixed his pants. Who the hell was at his door this late at night?! He glanced at Han who was fixing his clothes and looking for his shirt before activating the screen on the wall next to the door. "Whaddya want?!" He asked gruffly.
"I have some information you'll want to see," Winston said through the screen.
"Come back later!" Jesse growled, about to turn off his comms when Winston insisted.
"I'm afraid this is something that can't wait."
Jesse looked at Han, making sure he was proper before opening the door. "Shoot," he muttered, unlocking his door and letting Winston inside. "This better be important." He closed the door behind him.
On the other side of the door, Hana was walking the hallways on her way back to her room with an armful of snacks. Because of the time difference, she couldn't sleep, so she did what she did in every situation when she was up with nothing to do: game. As she walked down the main corridor, she saw Winston at the end of the hall at Jesse's door. What was that all about?
"Hanzo, I'm glad you're here," Winston said, putting a USB drive on the side table. He felt bad for barging in on them, but this absolutely couldn't wait.
"Against my wishes, but here nonetheless," Hanzo complained, sitting at the table and picking up the flash drive.
"My apologies for pulling you away from home, but I have a feeling that's exactly what was supposed to happen," Winston wasn't sure how explosively they would react, but he couldn't keep this to himself.
"What do you mean by that?" Hanzo's gut feeling only worsened, holding back his initial urge to call his daughter and make sure she was okay.
"I think what's on that flash drive will tell you everything you need to know," Winston said right as Jesse's arm lit up. "Either that or Agent Colomar will. Meet with me when you have a plan."
With that, Winston left them alone again as they listened to the screen on Jesse's prosthetic warble.
"Well? Answer it!" Hanzo demanded.
"Liv!" Jesse answered. "What do I owe the pleasure?"
"No time for small talk, amigo," Olivia said. "They have your daughter."
"Nani?!" Hanzo shouted, standing and rushing over to the conversation. "What did you just say?!"
"Whoa, whoa," Jesse couldn't believe that to be true. "Talon has Illari? That's impossible. We just got off the phone with her!"
"She's there by choice," Olivia said, a hint of sadness in her voice.
Hanzo stood and continued his earlier pacing, shaking his head in disappointment. He knew something was up, but he didn't know the extent of this foolishness! "Talon? Talon?! What a… troublesome child! Does she really think those fools will treat her well?!" He grabbed his phone and dialed her number. "Ha! Voicemail! She has turned her phone off!"
"I'll let you two work things out. All the info you need to get her back is on that drive."
The screen went dark and Jesse stood up, trying to calm him down, but for naught. "Han."
"No! This is absolutely unacceptable!" Hanzo grabbed the USB and plugged it into the computer Jesse had in his room. "We will retrieve her, and then we will keep her confined to her room until further notice!"
"Han…" Jesse knew Illari had some burdens that led her down a stray path or two, but Talon was definitely not on his list! It made him feel better to know that she went on her own instead of being kidnapped, but it still wasn't a good situation. "Stay calm. We'll get her back, I promise."
"How do you expect me to stay calm with what we just learned?!" Hanzo clicked furiously through the files, pictures and pictures of her being walked through the building and talking to one of Talon's head scientists! "She deceived us, Jesse! I knew there was something going on, and you two told me to stop being paranoid!"
"I know, I know," Jesse held his hands up in defeat, hoping Han didn't direct his anger toward him. "We should have just brought her with us, but what's done is done, now." He pulled him out of the chair and into his arms. "We will get her back."
"Get your hands off me!" Hanzo tried to push him away, but he was too strong. "Jesse!"
"We will get her back!" Jesse held him tighter. If he didn't, he'd go on some sort of rampage, alerting everyone and getting them involved in their business.
"Our daughter, Jesse… why would she do this?" Hanzo said, his voice muffled by his shirt. "Did we not give enough validation? So much so that she had to seek it from the enemy?"
"Han, I don't think she knows they're the enemy," He kissed the top of his head. "Even still, we will bring her home."
"She needs us, Jesse," Hanzo wasn't a crier, but this event threatened to yank the moisture from his eyes.
"And we need her," Jesse rocked him side to side, glancing at the photos of her on the screen. So, this was their plan, huh? They wanted everyone at the base so they could wipe them all out in one go. But to use an innocent child? She already carried a large burden, this was the last thing she needed! They were probably singing praises about how they were doing good and brainwashing her just like they did Doctor De Kuiper. "We'll need backup."
"We are doing this on our own!" Hanzo protested. "Our daughter, our responsibility!"
"Yes, but I know someone who's been through this. Just trust me, and trust the people in her life that love her."
Jesse had always been a calm guy, and Hanzo was always envious of him for it. Though however envious he was, he was more grateful for his energy in situations like these. He always managed to calm him down in even the most stressful times, and he would forever be in his debt. For that, and for the fact that he was an amazing father and partner. He looked up at him, somewhat interested in his choice of help. "The medics?"
"Baptiste, specifically. He worked for Talon back in the day, so I figured he'd be the most helpful," Jesse explained. "Although, Niran probably won't let us go without him, so…"
Hanzo sighed long and hard. If they were to have anyone accompany them, better it be those two than anyone else. "Very well. We shall go talk to them now."
"I promise, Han," Jesse held him by the shoulders. He hated how torn up he looked and wanted nothing more than to hold him until everything was okay, but Illari came first. Always. "We will be back home watching movies together again like old times. The three of us."
