A/N: The gang work on tracking Nick down; will they arrive in time?
Paramedics had arrived and were tending to the injured. Sean checked in with Hank who advised him they were still tracking Nick. Sean let him know that they would be heading their way. As Sean left, an officer let him know that they weren't able to pull anything from the surveillance. Which Sean already knew; however, he acted surprised. After making an excuse he headed out with Juliette and Rosalee.
As they were heading towards Hank and Monroe, Sean called Hank for an update. They had found Nick, but didn't seem to have him detained yet. Hank provided an address and Sean headed that way. They quickly arrived at the address provided and met up with Hank and Monroe, both looking a little worse for wear.
"Where's Nick?" Sean asked them.
"Inside. We have him trapped." Hank answered.
"Probably not for long." Monroe commented.
"Is he hurt?" Juliette asked.
"If he is, I don't think he knows it." Monroe replied, hands on his knees as he caught his breath.
Hank looked at Juliette. "Juliette, you have to understand that Nick is more animal than man right now."
At that moment, a man, presumably the owner of the farm, came walking towards them, gun in hand. "Where is he?" He asked angrily.
"Sir, we have the situation under control." Hank told him, while flashing his badge.
He looked at Hank in surprise. "You're cops? How did you get here so fast? I just called 911."
Hanks eyes widened. They didn't have long to subdue Nick and get him out of there. "We've been following the suspect. I need you to put the gun down and go back in the house."
"He tried to kill me and my family." The man said, still, understandably angry. Sean wasn't sure what had occurred before they'd arrived, but it couldn't have been good.
"Is anyone hurt?" Sean asked him.
"No. But they're scared to death. This guy's insane. Who is he?"
Sean saw the others looking at each other, wondering what to say. "His name is…Thomas Schirach."
"Sir, give me the gun and go back in the house." Hank instructed.
The man shook his head. "I am not giving you, my gun. I'll go back inside, but my wife and kids are in there. And if this…thing gets out on the loose again…" He trailed off as they heard a noise coming from the barn. It sounded as if Nick was trying to break out.
Thankfully, the man decided to return to the house. "Alright, stay back and make sure that thing is ready." He told the woman.
He, Hank, and Monroe headed into the bar with Hank closing the door behind them. "Let's take him." Sean said to the other men.
"Not like this." Monroe said, giving Sean a knowing look. "I tried." And then he woged. Sean followed suit.
"God." He heard Hank say. Sean glanced at him.
"You ok?"
"I wish I could do that." Was the detectives reply.
Just then, Nick finally managed to break out of the area he had been locked in. The three men approached him cautiously. A fight ensured. No matter what they hit him with, Nick just kept coming. Even woged, Sean and Monroe were not much of a match for Nick. Eventually Hank drew his gun. "Nick don't do it. I swear to god, don't make me shoot you please." Hank pleaded. "I swear to god."
"Nick! Nick behind you." Sean heard Juliette's voice call out. As Nick turned to face her, Juliette drove the piqure-gigantesque into Nick's stomach. It seemed to shock him for a moment before he backhanded Juliette, sending her flying. Rosalee shot forward, taking the final shot that caused the piqure-gigantesque to administer the antidote into Nick's body.
Nick glanced down at the device in his stomach, turning his attention towards Rosalee who started to back up slowly. Nick started to advance towards her. Monroe moved, placing himself between the two. "Easy Nick. Please."
After a moment, Nick fell to the ground, and didn't appear to be getting back up. Hank moved over and helped Juliette. "You ok?"
"No, that hurt. But I gotta feel better than he does." She said, holding her face where Nick had hit her.
Nick was groaning and had started to shiver. "Is it working?" Hank asked, looking toward Rosalee.
"I think so." She replied.
Sean looked down at the detective. "We should give him another shot, just in case."
"We've him everything we had. We just have to get him back to the shop." Rosalee told him.
"Let's get him back there fast. Let's go." Monroe said.
They loaded Nick into Sean's car and headed off as sirens warned of the approaching police. Sean didn't want to have to explain what they were all doing there.
By the time they arrived back at the shop, the sun was starting to rise. Sean watched on as they administered another dose of the antidote to Nick. Nick was still unconscious. According to the others, the antidote had worked much faster on the other victims. "There's nothing more that we can do." Rosalee told them. "I'm not even sure if this is going to work. But I'm just don't know what else…dammit." Rosalee sighed as Juliette looked at her. "I'm sorry, I'm just trying not to…" She trailed off, unable to find the words.
"Me too." Juliette said quietly.
"I gotta get back to the precinct. Deal with what's happened." Sean told them, before glancing at Hank.
"I'm staying." He said.
"Probably best that you do." Sean told him. As he went to leave, Rosalee stopped him.
"This is Lorelei's stuff. She'll probably need it. And it might be better for her to go home instead of waiting around here." Rosalee said, grabbing Lorelei's bag and handing it to him.
Sean nodded, taking the bag and left.
As much as Sean wanted to go to Lorelei, he knew he had to deal with everything. He had sent Wu to take over for the officers who had taken the first shift watching over Lorelei. While walking to his office, he received a message from an unknown number. Done. News online. Link sent.
He hurried to his office and opened his laptop. He watched a news segment outlining the death of his brother, killed earlier by an explosive device being set off in his car while he was returning from the airport. Sean almost scoffed when the news said all of Vienna was mourning.
"All of Portland is not." He murmured to himself.
Sean had gotten his revenge. And with the death of the Crown Prince, the family would be scrambling. It should keep them distracted for a while.
Sean checked in with Wu. Lorelei was awake and alert, and soon to be discharged. It seemed she wasn't sure what happened last night, just remembered being attacked. And apparently Callaghan, one of the officers from last night had overheard him speaking with the doctor. Needless to say, she had overheard that Lorelei was his soulmate and she was pregnant. As one of the biggest gossips in the precinct it would only be a matter of time before everyone knew about his impending fatherhood with Nick Burkhardt's younger sister. It would explain a few looks he had gotten this morning. Sean advised Wu to bring Lorelei to the station to collect her belongings as she would no doubt be needing them. Despite Eric being dead, Sean decided to have Wu stay with Lorelei for the rest of the day, just so she wouldn't be alone. Especially considering her friends were with Nick. He just needed to keep her away from the spice shop until they had a better idea of Nick's state.
Sean soon received word that one of the victims from the bar had died, turning the investigation into a homicide. Thanks to Sean destroying the footage they didn't have a face, only a name. Sean thought that if Nick did recover, it would be better they don't tell him. Nick was a good man, despite being under the Baron's influence, he wouldn't be able to forgive himself if he knew that he had killed someone.
"Special delivery." Sergeant Wu said, knocking on his door. He opened the door, allowing Sean's soulmate to enter. "I shall give you two a moment alone." He said, before exiting and closing the door behind him.
Sean stood up and approached his soulmate, desperately wanting to pull her into his arms. However, he was aware the blinds in his office were open and out of the corner of his eye he could see a couple of people peering in with interest.
"How are you feeling? I'm sorry I couldn't be there this morning. Work…" He trailed off. She was certainly looking better than last night.
Lorelei smiled at him. "It's ok. I understand. Yesterday was kind of crazy. Baby and I are ok though. I am tired and my throat and chest hurt a little. But the doctor said I should be fine although he suggested I see my doctor within the next couple of weeks."
Sean nodded. "How's your blood pressure?"
"Ok, still a little high but they said it had dropped significantly compared to when I came in." She told him. She paused for moment. "Have you heard from Nick or the others? I tried calling him from the hospital this morning, but he didn't pick up."
Sean silently debated how much he should tell her. "Everyone is fine; however, things didn't go according to plan. Uh…"
Lorelei looked at him suspiciously. "What?"
Sean sighed. "It turns out the cracher-mortel was working with my brother. It was all a distraction so that he could go after what he really wanted. Which was you and your brother." He paused and Lorelei looked at him expectantly. "Obviously, his people failed getting you, however, for a brief time, they got their hands on Nick. He was…affected by the cracher-mortel. But we got him back, got the antidote in him, and I just received word that he is recovering. Juliette just took him home."
Lorelei looked distressed. "They got him? But…but…he's ok now, right?"
Sean nodded, bringing his hands to rest on her shoulders. He wanted to do more, but was aware there were eyes on them. Sean was a private man who preferred to keep his work and home lives separate. "He's going to be ok. The best thing you can do for him right now, is go home and rest."
Lorelei nodded. "Ok." She said, and Sean was a little surprised she didn't try to argue more. She must have been really tired.
"Thank you." He said, before stepping behind his desk and picking her bag up from the floor. "Sergeant Wu will take you home and stay with you until I get back. Please don't give him a hard time."
"Me, never." She said, smiling tiredly up at him as she took her bag.
Sean looked down at her, taking her in. She was ok. Their baby was ok. His brother was dead and for the time being, his family was distracted. "I really want to kiss you right now, but…"
Another smile. "We are being watched. I get it. I love you."
Sean returned her smile. "I love you. I'll see you tonight.
Not long after Lorelei left, Hank entered his office and approached his desk. "Somebody died in the bar fight Nick was in?"
"I don't know the details or what the cause of death was." He told Hank.
"Well, I've got a pretty good idea what the cause of death was." Hank said. "How are we going to deal with this?"
"Very carefully. Uniforms saw me at the bar, along with Rosalee and Juliette. I'll be questioned and so will they."
Hank looked at him questioningly. "What are you going to tell them?"
Sean sat back. "Whatever we tell them has to be the same story. Now, right now they think they're looking for Thomas Schirach and we need to make sure, that they keep thinking that way. Because that is the only way we can protect Nick."
Sean returned with Hank to the spice shop to discuss Nick and the cover story they should all follow. Monroe and Rosalee were already there, with Juliette on the way.
"But it wasn't Nick's fault." Monroe said vehemently. "You saw him, he was trying to kill us…I mean, not us personally, generally speaking."
"Not a great defence." Hank told him.
"You know what you're asking us to do." Rosalee said to Sean.
"Nothing I haven't already done."
There was a knock on the door. Rosalee went to answer it, looking at Sean suspiciously as she did so. Juliette walked in, looking wary as she saw everyone gathered, looking solemn. "Hey, what's the problem?" She asked.
Monroe looked at Sean. "One of the men that Nick fought at the bar has died."
Juliette's jaw dropped. "Oh no." She said, looking at Monroe.
"He wasn't himself." Monroe said.
"It doesn't matter." Hank told him. "You can't defend what you can't explain."
"So, Nick is a murderer."
"Technically." Sean answered slowly.
"But, so far, no one knows Nick was in the bar." Hank said.
"The man responsible for the death has been identified as Thomas Schirach." Sean told them.
"Which works for me because I don't think we can blame Nick for what happened. Because he was poisoned. He would have died." Rosalee said, looking at the others.
"As long as they're looking for Thomas Schirach, Nick is in the clear. Ironically, the false identity my brother created to get Nick out of the country is working in our favour. "
"What if they see Nick in the surveillance recordings?" Juliette asked, as Monroe started pacing.
"Well, so far, none has been found."
Juliette nodded. "Ok."
"Two detectives have been assigned to the case." Sean said, sliding his hands into his pockets as he started moving around. "From the reports, they know there were two women with me there that night. And they're going to want to talk to all of us."
"I know what we should tell them." Rosalee said.
"And it is definitely not the truth." Monroe added.
"Right." She said, giving Monroe a look.
Juliette looked at Hank. "Hank, are you good with this?"
The two looked at each other. "I'm not good with Nick going to prison for something he didn't even know he was doing. But you heard him, he doesn't remember anything."
Juliette sighed. "Ok, ok. So, we are all going to lie to protect Nick. So, what happens if he finds out?"
Monroe gave short, strained laugh. "Hopefully he throws us a little party."
Everyone looked at Monroe before Sean spoke up again. "He's not going to find out. Least not for a little while." The others had turned their attention back to Sean. "Now look, we all have to agree on three things. We were chasing down infected suspects. One of them was identified as Thomas Schirach." He looked at Rosalee and Juliette. "And you two were there because you had a treatment that was effective."
"See." Monroe said, gesturing towards Sean. "Not so bad. Some of its true."
"Now, we have to decide on the details. Because that is how you get caught.
