Okay we're back to Tyler and his group's part of the story, which will be for the next few phases at least. I do hope you enjoy the phase even if it is more filler and setup for what is to come.
Phase 90: Threats From the Shadows
November 20th, 73 C.E.
Shira, the Republic
It was a few days after the Minerva headed out for Carpentaria that Tyler was looking for things to do. He wasn't one to enjoy being idle for long if he could help it, more out of habit than anything else. New orders for the Normandy hadn't come in yet that Tyler had seen from Federation High Command. Although there were rumblings that things between the Alliance and Federation were worsening, so that could quickly change. Tyler knew that looking in on Athrun and the Minerva too closely would distract him when he should be paying attention to other things. There were things Tyler could and should be doing rather than worrying about Athrun and what he could be dealing with. His friend was capable of looking after himself and Tyler knew it. It was just that the Minerva had the knack of attracting trouble to itself without much effort. Athrun would be a help for the Minerva, Tyler wouldn't deny that with Athrun's skills and capabilities.
Tyler decided to browse the Information Network to get his mind off what the Minerva could be dealing with. Glancing over the data on the network had a tendency to help Tyler focus his mind on current events. It was a go-to method that Tyler used to clear his head and work on getting his mind on things he needed to. And if there was a time Tyler needed to clear his head, this was certainly one of those times with the Alliance's war gained steam. The Alliance had been toeing the line with several things and it had been irritating many, Tyler included. The Alliance and whoever their benefactors were getting what they wanted to an extent. Their attack on Asgard had begun the war they seemed to want for themselves for whatever motivation they had in their minds. That war was only expanding in scope and getting worse as time was moving forward. With that in mind, to deal with the mess the Alliance was forcing on the rest of Humanity the best he could, Tyler got into the Information Network and began going through the most recent entries. Tyler started as he normally did with the highest classified files and data he could see as that tended to say what things were going on and give the feel of things.
The first few things that Tyler glanced over weren't anything he didn't know or expected already. The Alliance hadn't been any smarter after their assault on Asgard, their actions which had followed and more their plans which had been acquired reflected that point. However, then Tyler opened some data that had come from a "trusted extremely confidential" source which got him to halt. The label was not a common one that Tyler had seen all that often and the few he'd seen had gotten data that was normally incredibly valuable or outright dangerous in nature. So, Tyler's curiosity got the better of him and got him to open the file to look it over more. Tyler did a quick look up of the source listed and his concern sharply increased. The data in the file made it unmistakably clear that the "source" of the file provided ZAFT information. A quick side search Tyler did tell him the source tended to supply off-the-books and highly classified information before this and had been proven right thus far. That made the file all the more concerning if it was for an off the books or highly classified mission.
As Tyler skimmed over the data in more detail, he was getting the impression that he was reading a set of orders. The way it was written and some of the parts that popped out made it feel like order to soldiers or a military group. Yet, it wasn't just the format that had caught Tyler's attention, there was more to the file which was catching his eye. There were lines and phrases that were jumping out as Tyler skimmed the file. Tyler had to read the file multiple times to get a better picture of what he was going over. Tyler had seen more than enough orders for all sorts of assignments/missions during his military service. So, he knew how orders were written enough to know when he was going over such. Orders to specific types of groups were different than others, which Tyler also knew. This file was certainly an example of careful written orders for a specific group, that much was obvious to Tyler.
What was more worrisome was the orders he was reading were normally for a few types of groups which none were regular soldiers. That left the receiving group being likely some type of special forces group which was a red flag in Tyler's mind. The more read throughs got Tyler's concern to increase as the wording he was seeing pointed in a direction he didn't like. The wording used was carefully chosen, even if others wouldn't see the way the orders were written that way as Tyler did. And the wording strongly suggested that the file was part of the very thin paper trail on whoever would be carrying them out. For that to be the case told Tyler that the orders were likely for something that was being done "off-the-books" by some that knew what they were doing wouldn't be seen good by others. That was yet another red flag which each new flag only made Tyler more concerned as to what he was reading. For "orders" to be subtlety worded to essentially evade connection and responsibility was rarely a good thing in Tyler's opinion. There were only two real reasons to do that with orders in Tyler's mind with few if any exceptions to that. Those reasons were to keep the public in the dark about something which had to be done as a last resort to have humanity survive and to cover something up which shouldn't be done to begin with.
Nonetheless, the orders he was reading appeared to be more toward the latter of the two from what Tyler could gather so far. He was still working out what the orders were to have a group do in full, but there was specific wording which stuck out more than the rest which was nagging at Tyler. The first phrase that Tyler picked out was "location acknowledged," saying whomever the target of the group who got these orders knew who they were looking for and where they were. It also inferred that the mission was target specific which was yet another red flag to him. What concerned and angered Tyler was when looking further down the file, the coordinates on it "happened" to be where Kira and Lacus were living with the kids and the rest. That implied that someone there was the target of the orders. And out of those who lived at the orphanage, Lacus was the most likely to be a target of some that wouldn't want to be connected to the girl in public. It was possible that the target could be someone else, but Lacus had the highest value as a target since she had influence with people.
Regardless of who was the orders receivers was to target, those at the orphanage could very well be in danger. And if there wasn't a particular phrase that Tyler saw, he wouldn't be as immediately worried for his friends and the orphans. That phrase was "black dusting," and it changed everything since it was in relation to the target. "Black dusting" was code for assassination as far as Tyler knew and it was specific and exclusive to ZAFT. It was terms that were normally given to ZAFT black opts or something similar to that from what Tyler understood. He'd never heard of an instance when "black dusting" had been mentioned where it hadn't been for an assassination operation. And with Lacus and Kira around where this order was potentially sending soldiers to was more than concerning to Tyler. If specially trained ZAFT soldier were going to be sent to where his friends were, the chances of them or any of the rest at the orphanage living through that weren't high at all.
There were enough "red flags" within the file that Tyler had been going over that it was something he couldn't ignore. Plus, there was too much specific information in it to be something that was just some documentation. What he couldn't explain was why any in ZAFT or around the PLANTs would gain any benefit from Lacus potentially dying. She was far more valuable alive than dead, logic would agree with that as the facts were. But with the "black dusting" reference, that was what those sent would be there to do. Sure, Athrun had mentioned something about a "stand-in" that he'd encountered. However, Tyler couldn't see that transition into a permanent thing without some trying to capture Lacus and bring her in first. So, either someone who had different ideas which Lacus could be a threat to, or there was more going on than was being said. Neither potential answer was acceptable for Tyler as he wouldn't let Lacus be killed by others if he was able to do anything about it.
As the Normandy didn't have orders right now, he had the time to arrange something to make sure Lacus and those around her weren't killed by some from ZAFT. Granted, that would likely pit Tyler against ZAFT black opts personnel. That would provide him several challenges and difficulties that he normally didn't deal with on a regular basis. Yet, that wouldn't stop Tyler from doing what he could to protect his friends and those kids at the orphanage. Tyler had SOLAS training to work with which included counter-black opts skills. Tyler would make any who came to kill his friends descend into a living hell the likes of which they hadn't prepared for before they were killed. While Tyler did do pranks to some, friends included sometime, those were tame compared to what Tyler was actually capable of when put to it. Tyler normally had a line he kept behind when it came to pranks, more so he didn't go too far and do real harm to others. But those that would come to attempt to kill Lacus or another at the orphanage, Tyler would cross that line to protect them.
With that motivation in mind, Tyler got to work preparing for what he would do to protect his friends. The first thing he decided to do was return a call from Carlos which had come yesterday. Tyler assumed his friend had called to ask him to come to Teswa to test something for him. That was normally the kind of call he got from his friend, which Tyler usually didn't have an issue with. The message that Tyler had listened to had confirmed that Teswa was requesting him to come and test something for them. But right now, Tyler really needed something for a bad situation that could help and turn the tables. For all Tyler knew, the stuff Carlos wanted Tyler to test something which he could use to help protect those at the orphanage. Tyler certainly hoped that was the case as it would be a good omen in Tyler's mind. But if it wasn't, then Tyler would have to figure out other plans which he could count on for what was ahead. He waited for the answer on the other end of the call, which took what felt like a long moment.
Carlos had been recording some things when his com-unit had started going off. When Carlos looked at the ID of the caller, he smiled seeing it was Tyler. He'd reached out to his young friend on behalf of several members of Teswa along with himself. They had equipment that really needed testing, specifically field testing for further improvements to be made. Tyler had been the first person that was considered for the job as he usually was. It just said how much Teswa R saw Tyler as their star tester. The feedback he gave after testing was exactly what any developer could ever ask for the vast majority of the time. And with Tyler still around Shira as far as Carlos knew with the ship he was "assigned" to in dock, having him testing was ideal. Carlos hadn't been able to reach Tyler when he'd called yesterday, but he'd left a message for him. With Tyler calling back, Carlos hoped that his friend was responding to the request for him to test equipment for Teswa. Carlos connected the call, "Tyler, so glad you are returning my call."
"I do try to get to them as I can, Carlos," Tyler replied. "Your message said that you and others at Teswa have something you want me to test. You know I normally am more than happy to do that whenever the opportunity comes up. However, something unexpected has popped up which has me hesitating sorry to say. The unexpected situation will likely become a dicey situation before its end. So, if this equipment you would like me to test is able to potentially assist with that, I would be more than happy to do the testing for you and your colleagues. Yet, if it can't do that, I will have to ask you wait for a little bit while I settle what has come up for me. Once the upcoming situation is taken care of, I will make the time for Teswa and test whatever it is you wish me to."
Whatever situation that Tyler was hinting at, Carlos was fairly sure that the machine Teswa wanted him to field test should be able to help him. Carlos may not know what situation Tyler was about to get into, but whenever Tyler had a serious tone, it tended to be a dangerous one that would have him fighting. A mobile suit would no doubt help him in what he would be facing. That was more so with Tyler being the caliber of pilot he was. "Oh, I'm confident that what we at Teswa wish for you to test should be of help to you in whatever you are going to be going into," Carlos returned. "And once you see what we want you to test, I have no doubt that you would agree with my reply."
It wasn't that Tyler didn't believe Carlos and his confidence, he trusted his friend when he gave the sales pitches he did. His friend had proven his confidence tended to be well placed and founded with the work he and others did. Yet, there had been no specific mention of what equipment Tyler would be testing or even the type. But Tyler figured he would have to swing by Teswa and see what they had for him to work with. He was already planning to stop by a Federation's Military armory for some "supplies." However, that could be done along the way to the train station to get to Teswa. "I'll take your word for it, Carlos," Tyler remarked. "I'll be at Teswa in around an hour to an hour and a half. I need to swing by one place before Teswa and get some things before heading your way. So, whatever you have for me to test, if you could have it ready to present and me to potentially take it and go, that would be great."
Carlos had no issue having the machine Tyler was to test ready in an hour. He was just left to wonder what kind of a situation his young friend could be going into. For him to need to "swing" by another place before coming to Teswa suggested he was going to fetch supplies of some kind. If the situation would be as dicey as Tyler implied it was going to be, Carlos could only imagine that his friend was picking up tools which likely include an array of weapons. Carlos knew that Tyler was a soldier and as such, he fought and killed others when required to. It was the unfortunate state of the world which it was being pushed into once again. "We can have what we have for you ready in an hour, Tyler," Carlos replied. "I will see you when you arrive on the other side of the security checkpoint."
Tyler ended the call, and got straight to work gathering what he could need for the situation he was going to be getting into. He grabbed a large duffle bag along with a second smaller duffle bag. The larger bag would be for the arsenal that Tyler would be getting from the armory, including guns and explosives like grenades of varying types. The smaller bag would by for the other equipment that Tyler would retrieve for the situation he would be working on. He was planning to go against ZAFT special forces soldiers or better with what he would be snagging at the armory. Tyler knew he couldn't hold back and "play nice" with those that would be coming to try and kill his friends. The orders he'd read were too suspicious for Tyler not to take it seriously and do his utmost to stop those who were carrying out the orders.
Once Tyler gathered the stuff he had around his house that he felt he may use, he went to his car. Tyler drove over to the area where the Federation had military complexes and facilities. He needed to acquire supplies from the armory like guns and other things. Tyler got through the security checkpoint without issue, though he had to say that he was on "SOLAS business." Tyler knew saying that was a privilege that SOLAS agents had which was rarely abused. SOLAS business was stated when it was better for others not to know what was being worked on as it was either classified and/or something really nasty. What Tyler was going to be going into didn't turn out to be nasty before the end, he would be absolutely shocked. So, as far as Tyler was concerned, protecting his friends against what was going to be coming their way qualified the type of stuff SOLAS dealt with.
At the armory, Tyler was able to acquire a variety of guns which he fitted in the large duffle bag. The guns were arranged to fit in the bag as tight as possible so he could put as good an arsenal to work with as Tyler could get. Along with the guns were grenades, flash bangs, and tear gas grenades. In the center of the duffle bag was an explosive device which Tyler had asked for in case he had need of a "trump card" to get his point across. The device could blow up the orphanage and take those assaulting it with the building when it came down. Tyler hoped that wouldn't be needed, he would rather not destroy the orphanage if he could help it. The one at the armory had no issue with the requests Tyler had for some specific equipment he would like to have to use if need be. Tyler appreciated that the armorer didn't ask too many questions about what Tyler was going to be going into. It was better there was the least questions asked about what Tyler would be doing as possible.
With Tyler going to defend Lacus, Kira, and the rest at the orphanage, he expected things to be tense for himself and the rest. He would be going against a group with the same general training as Tyler had as they would have the equivalent of special forces training. Tyler would rely on his SOLAS training to help him fight off those that would come to the orphanage to do harm. There were a few things in Tyler's favor which he wouldn't discount. The orphanage had an armored bunker which those there could retreat to in hard times or when in danger. The kids and others at the orphanage would be okay as the shelter would protect them from most things. That would include Tyler's trump card in his large duffle bag, even if the armorer said the explosive device could take out a medium sized building. The goal was to protect and preserve the inhabitants of the orphanage in Tyler's mind.
After the stop at the armory, Tyler reached out to Lisa. He wanted to inform her that he would be away for a few days. Tyler didn't want to leave Lisa hanging or wondering where he could be should orders for the Normandy come down. He didn't foresee the "issue" that Tyler would be handling taking more than a few days at most. But he knew the Normandy was awaiting orders and could get them while he was away. Yet, Tyler wanted to cover as many bases as possible before he got into the situation he was going toward. He did give a basic summary to Lisa about the mess he was going to be diving into. Lisa didn't argue with Tyler about what he told her which he appreciated. Tyler hadn't doubted Lisa would try to talk him out of what he planned to do since she knew the lengths he went to for friends.
Once Tyler finished giving Lisa the rundown, he drove over to the nearest train station. He rode the train to Teswa, wondering what kind of equipment Carlos and his colleagues had for him to test. Normally, Tyler wouldn't question what Teswa wanted him to test for them. It was a lesson he'd learned as if he questioned it, then those at Teswa may go to someone else and Tyler didn't want that. Tyler enjoyed testing stuff for Teswa as it was fun for him and let him stay in the know about developing technology. He just hoped that whatever it was that Teswa had could help him defend the orphanage against those coming to cause harm. Tyler trusted Carlos when his friend said they had something which would assist Tyler. But without knowing more specifics, Tyler was still concerned.
When arriving at the Teswa station, Tyler faced a bit of a hurdle. With what his duffle bags contained, getting through the security checkpoint would be more time-consuming. After showing his military ID, those at the checkpoint requested that Tyler put his bags through the scanners there. Tyler told them it would save all time by himself saying he had guns and explosives in the bags. He also stated the supplies were for SOLAS business which he couldn't get into detail about with others. Tyler got a bit of pushback which he'd expected from those at the checkpoint. It was their job to protect those at Teswa and screen those trying to enter the complex. So, Tyler didn't blame the soldiers for not just doing what Tyler told them and letting him through. Tyler was just coming to potentially picking up something to assist in the situation Tyler would be diving into. After some back and forth discussion between Tyler and the soldiers at the checkpoint, Tyler was allowed to proceed into Teswa. Just beyond the checkpoint, Tyler found his friend Carlos waiting for him. Tyler smiled at his friend and would've waved if he wasn't carrying the two duffle bags.
Carlos had been waiting for Tyler as it had been around an hour since Tyler had called Carlos back. Carlos's attention had shifted when he heard voices from the security checkpoint. By what he could hear, there was some sort of argument going on with the soldiers at the checkpoint. One of the voices certainly sounded like Tyler if Carlos wasn't mistaken. It was a tad odd that Tyler would be stopped at the checkpoint as he was sort of a "regular" that visited the complex. Thus, the soldiers at the checkpoint should be aware Tyler was pretty much welcome to come and go unlike most. Carlos waited for Tyler to finish whatever he was talking about with the soldiers, still curious what the issue could be.
It was a few minutes, but Tyler did appear to which Carlos rose from the chair he'd been sitting in. Carlos saw that Tyler had two duffle bags with him, one was large, and the other was smaller than the other. He couldn't say what was in the duffle bags or why Tyler had them with him. He could only guess it had something to do with the "situation" Tyler had mentioned on the call. Both bags certainly appeared to be filled essentially to their capacity from what Carlos could tell. "Tyler," Carlos greeted, "I hope that whatever was being discussed with the soldiers isn't a problem. You normally don't have problems entering the complex as you come around it somewhat regularly."
Tyler knew that his regular visits to Teswa had helped him get through the security checkpoints more efficiently. However, with him carrying an arsenal and supplies, that was not part of his ordinary visitations. The soldiers were doing their due diligence by questioning him about what was in the bag and why he had such things. The Teswa complex was a protected place, so weapons being brought in was to be discouraged. And if Tyler wasn't going to be heading into a nasty and dicey situation, Tyler wouldn't have brought what he had. But Tyler's circumstances were what they were, and he couldn't change them by sitting around and doing nothing. He would regret that type of inaction for the rest of his life, Tyler was sure of that. So, Tyler shrugged in response to Carlos, "Well, the discussion as you put it wasn't nice, but I can't blame the soldiers for doing that," Tyler remarked. "I'm carrying things which they are to not normally allow to enter into Teswa."
Carlos took Tyler's reply to say that the bags contained weapons and other things of the like. It wasn't his business what Tyler was doing, though that didn't stop Carlos from being curious. His friend was a heck of a soldiers. Carlos was aware that Tyler was considered some type of specialist and the best at what his skill set was which Carlos didn't know specifically. But from what Carlos had taken from the call with Tyler, there was something go on which Tyler was working on. Whatever it was had Tyler on edge which was rarely a good thing. Carlos had learned that Tyler's "intuition" was not just something impressive with how often it was right, but something not to question without extremely good reason. "I'll take your word for that," Carlos returned. "But I would assume you want me to show you what we here would like you to test for us, right Tyler?"
Tyler nodded as he was on what one might call a "time crunch" with a black ops group coming to harm friends. Yet, he couldn't help but wonder what Carlos had for him to test. The direction that scientific development had been going after the Treaty of Junius Seven had been interesting. Both the Alliance and ZAFT had been further developing nuclear technology as far as Tyler was aware even if military development of such was supposed to be forbidden. But just because something was forbidden by treaties didn't mean all followed that point. The Alliance was expected and had been proven to have violated the Treaty of Junius Seven already. And where Tyler wanted to believe ZAFT was following the treaty, something in him say they were still developing things they shouldn't be and simply not using such in the open yet.
On the other hand, Tyler knew the Federation had been keeping its word not further developing nuclear technology for military use. Tyler felt that had been motivating Federation R to look and work on alternatives to nuclear tech. He would be surprised if Federation scientists hadn't made some kind of progress in some type of alternative. However, Tyler hadn't heard much about what could've been developed in that regard. He hoped that Carlos might give some hints as to that while Tyler was here. Yet, Tyler knew he needed to focus on what he was going to be doing in the very new future. Any new developments in technology could wait for later consideration and research.
Carlos led Tyler to the mobile suit development floor as that was where the machine Tyler was to test was located. The suit had arrived at Teswa a few weeks ago from the Koovos Weapon Development facility. The unit was one of the prototypes of the next generation of Gundams which the Federation was planning to use. It and the other prototypes were collaborative efforts between Teswa, Koovos, and another scientific development facility. The third facility was a newer one by the name of Valhalla Research. The place did theoretical research on new technologies. What Carlos had seen from the place had already blown his mind with how revolutionary the developments would be. The power reactor on the mobile suit Tyler was to test alone was incredible.
Tyler was brought by Carlos to the mobile suit development floor which had him kind of excited. If the mobile suit development floor was anything to go by, Tyler could be testing a mobile suit for Teswa. Tyler never had an issue with testing things for Teswa, and it wouldn't be the first mobile suit he'd tested, really his second one. The first mobile suit that Tyler had gotten to test may have not been in a field test, but it had still been a blast for Tyler to work with. And a mobile suit would be honestly perfect for the mess he was going into with going against a black ops group. Should the group be thinking about contingencies, they would bring mobile suits of their own to work with. So, Tyler wouldn't be saying no to using a mobile suit should that expectation prove true.
Carlos came to a halt and put in a command into the console he had stopped by which had lights come on in front of them. Tyler blinked as he took in the sight which had appeared in front of him. A mobile suit was in the dock, and it was unlike any that Tyler had seen before. The first thing which Tyler noted was the suit was a Gundam type with the features which had made Gundams their own suit type. The machine was eighteen meters in height from its head to the floor. The suit was grey, the same shade as Gundams which didn't have their phase shift armor activated. The design was certainly different than what mobile suits had exactly before now. What stood out to Tyler was an "orb-like" part in the torso, and the "ribbons" which were on the outside of the shoulders, and in the legs.
Tyler would admit he was already getting excited at seeing the Gundam in front of him. That Carlos had brought him to be here looking at the suit strongly implied that it was the "equipment" which Teswa wanted him to test for them. For the machine to be a Gundam just made the prospect of testing it all the more exciting for Tyler. But he would hold in his excitement and judgment until Carlos gave him the rundown of what the Gundam could do. Tyler saw no weapons other than what could be beam saber hilts. But he felt there was more to what the Gundam would have than he was seeing right now. Thus, after taking in the suit's appearance, Tyler turned to Carlos, "So my friend," he began, "If this Gundam is what you have for me to test, then you got me more than willing. But do give me the spiel you got on this mobile suit since I'm all ears."
Carlos figured that Tyler would be willing and even excited to test out a mobile suit, more so with it being a Gundam type. He'd seen Tyler glancing the Gundam over taking in what he could of the machine. There was equipment which hadn't been attached yet but would be before Tyler took the mobile suit. So, Carlos smiled before he replied, "This mobile suit is the GSR-001 Exia, a Gundam as you have already figured out. It is one of the prototypes of the next generation of mobile suits. Gundams, it seems will be what leads that these days, which none are complaining about. It and the others of its series are a collaborative effort between many to develop and construct."
While mobile suit development being a collaborative effort was understandable to Tyler, he couldn't help but be curious. Tyler could only think of a select few places which scientific development which would go into the Gundam could be done. Sure, there could be new ones which Tyler hadn't heard of yet. However, Tyler tended to keep in the know as to places which mobile suits were developed around. "When you say collaborative effort Carlos," Tyler posed. "What do you mean by that, and with whom, if I might ask?"
"You may guess that the Koovos weapon development labs are one of those that were involved with the Exia's and the others being worked on. They are working on the defensive and offensive options it has to work with. We here at Teswa have done the work on the OS and the other internal systems, including the phase shift armor." Carlos paused for a moment after saying what Teswa had done for the Exia. Valhalla Research's existence was not public knowledge and wasn't planned to be for a time. It was mostly due to the theoretical work being done there which would change future scientific development. Carlos took a breath, "I must ask you not talk about the other facility which was a key part of this. Its existence is being kept a secret for the time being and is being done so for a reason, I assure you. The majority of the development and construction of key components were done by those at the Valhalla Research complex."
Tyler had heard the name "Valhalla Research" before, but very little more than the name. From what he did know, it was supposed to be some kind of new research complex, which was obvious by its name. However, the rumor was the research it did was unlike anything other Federation facilities did. It would fit with the place being kept secret from the public and probably more from the other two factions were Tyler to guess. He had no issue keeping such to himself, he'd proven trustworthy with that kind of data. "Oh, you won't hear a peep from me about the place, Carlos. I know there is some information which it is best kept out of the public eye and not talked about with most," Tyler remarked. "But could you give me a bit of detail as to why you say they are responsible for key parts to this Gundam, please?"
With the security clearance which Tyler had mentioned he had, Carlos didn't doubt Tyler could be trusted with information about Valhalla Research. And he would ask more about the reactor which both powered the Gundam and was the propulsion system. So, Carlos exhaled heavily before he continued, "Valhalla Research is in reality a space station where advance theoretical research without interference. The location is not said often to any that aren't directly involved with it. The most I know is it is not on Earth or among the colonies or the moon, but I can't say beyond that. However, by what I've been told by some there, its position plays an integral part to the work that it does. Specifically, it developed one of the most revolutionary and important parts in the Gundam which make it so different from the previous generation of mobile suits."
Carlos's reply had Tyler all the more curious what was being referred to. There was apparently something in the Gundam he had glanced at which was completely new and "revolutionary" according to Carlos. But there hadn't been a direct mention as to what that part was that Tyler had heard yet. And he'd seen nothing which stood out in the way which Carlos had been describing that Tyler had seen. So, Tyler folded his arms and asked the question on his mind, "Okay, what is so different with this mobile suit over those that have come before now? You keep referring to a part at least which is completely different than before, so do tell what you are talking about a bit more please."
Tyler's question served as a good place for Carlos to start with his rundown on the Exia. There was an amount to go over, and Carlos had the feeling Tyler wanted to get going as quickly as he could. And Carlos was truthfully excited about the new power reactor Valhalla had created for the new Gundams to work with. He fully believed the idea of utilizing solar energy and other types of particles would be the future of energy production. So, a smile formed on Carlos' face, "The biggest thing which has changed is the power source used by this Gundam and its fellows. Frankly, it is revolutionary in many ways, and I believe will be critical in the future. The power source is called a GN Solar Reactor, the GN standing for Genolos Nucleosis which by what I understand is the name of the process it uses. The reactor is a semi-perpetual generator which harnesses the byproducts ofbaryonic decayas an energy source which comes out as light particles."
Tyler blinked at Carlos's explanation, for some of it went way over his head. Tyler would be the first to admit he wasn't scientifically minded, nothing like his dad was. He was sure his dad would've understood what Carlos had said, and likely been excited. But the scientific terms were as gibberish and mumbo jumbo to Tyler. All he'd gotten from the explanation was the power source the Gundam had was new, and it was amazing in some way to Carlos. The terms his friend used meant nothing to Tyler as he'd not heard of most of them. Solar was fine, that had something to do with the sun's rays, but how that related to the power source, Tyler hadn't a clue. So, Tyler held up his hands and waved them to catch Carlos's attention, "Whoa man, hold up," Tyler said. "The majority of what you just said is akin to gibberish to me as it made no sense. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm not science savvy like my dad was. I'm smart, no denying that, but scientific terms don't land with me well, as hard as my dad tried to change that." Tyler paused and sighed as he hated to have things simplified for himself, but with science stuff, it was necessary. "That said, please, dumb down your explanation so that I can actually have a chance had comprehending what you're talking about."
Carlos had forgotten that Tyler wasn't like his father, Professor Blass sometimes. Tyler certainly had gotten a portion of his intelligence from his father but hadn't gained the scientific understanding Professor Blass had possessed. Tyler just looked so much like his father that it was not that hard to forget he wasn't Professor Blass when Carlos got excited. Thus, Carlos inclined his head, "My apologies," Carlos replied, "You just look so much like Professor Blass and talk like him sometimes that old habits come out."
Tyler had no issue being compared to his father, if anything, it was one of the best compliments he could get. And it was Tyler that forgot that Carlos was one of the seemingly many students that his father had taught over the years. So, Tyler waved a hand, "Don't worry about it. Being compared to my dad is among the highest compliments I feel I can receive." Tyler stopped as his heart ached with being reminded of the loss of his dad and sister. "I only wish my dad was still around."
Carlos gained a solum expression at Tyler's reply. He knew that his young friend wasn't the only one that missed Professor Blass by any stretch of the imagination. Tyler had lost his father and younger sister when Bloody Valentine had occurred. For the students of Professor Blass, they had all lost a dear mentor which all had respected and loved. Professor Blass had been the ideal teacher that cared about each AND every student he had regardless of if it was just for one class he taught or more. Most of the students had gone to the Professor for something they had been working on, Carlos included. Heck, Professor Blass had been one of those that had recommended Carlos to work at Teswa R . "You probably already know, but you aren't the only one that wishes the Professor was still alive and not taken by the Bloody Valentine."
Tyler said nothing, which Carlos took to continue where he had been going in his explanation. "Forgive me for getting sidetracked," Carlos stated. "Back to the explanation, and I will word it so you should be able to understand it better. The reactor generates particles that have many similar qualities to solar energy from the sun. Yet, those particles have solar energy at densities that have not been seen before. Like other power sources, an individual GN reactor has a limited moment-by-moment output. However, due to its design and nature, the GN Solar Reactor continues to supply power for a theoretically infinite period of time. That should be true so long as the reactor's rate of production isn't outdone by the power consumption or pushed to breaking limits for an extended period."
The explanation Carlos was giving was far more understandable than what it had been a moment ago. The particles which the reactor generated sounded amazing to Tyler. By the way Carlos put it, the particles seemed like the next stage of solar energy utilization. If that could be used and improved, that could very well replace nuclear energy for the Human Race. Should this reactor and what it did be the alternative energy the Federation was working on, Tyler was fully onboard with it. The other thing which had caught Tyler's attention was it sounded like the reactor could be semi-perpetual. Were that the case, that could easily change a battle for a mobile with the reactor. It would effectively extend operational time, if not almost eliminate it for a mobile suit should the pilot be smart. Yet, Tyler wanted to make sure he wasn't making incorrect assumptions, so he spoke up. "Uh, if I could ask a question, Carlos. The way you talk about the reactor, you make it sound like it is semi-perpetual or something like that. So, my question is, is the reactor that way or am I just misunderstanding?"
Tyler's perception was as on point as it ever was with him asking the question he was. Carlos knew his young friend was smart, maybe not in scientific ways, but he picked things up really quick. What Tyler had asked was a valid question, and the answer was yes, the reactor was semi-perpetual. It was a point which all at Teswa were applauding Valhalla Research had managed to create. So, Carlos nodded, "You assume correctly, the reactor is indeed semi-perpetual. As long as the suit doesn't consume power at a higher rate than particles are produced, the reactor can keep the suit going indefinitely by what developers calculate. That is one of the points that your testing will hopefully prove, or show isn't as calculations state they will be." Carlos took a breath and continued, "Along with being the power source of the Exia, the reactor also acts as its propulsion. Essentially, the reactor is connected to everything the Gundam uses from propulsion to weapons and defense."
Tyler was already impressed with this "next-generation Gundam" and what was being implied about it. It sounded like the mobile suit would not just have an "advantage" over its opponents, but more. The reactor alone did things which had been stated as impossible with current and likely future technologies for a time. Granted, to fully utilize the capabilities of the mobile suit, the pilot would have to fight smart and not just blast away at enemies. But that would be more a matter of training and mindset which could be changed. Thus, Tyler clapped softly, "You're impressing me so far Carlos," he remarked, "And you know I don't impress easily. Plus, as you've only explained the power source, you still got more to go. So, I feel you will be impressing me more before the end of this. That said, do continue blowing my mind Carlos, you have a real knack for it."
Carlos chuckled at Tyler's reply as his young friend was complimenting him even if others wouldn't see that. Tyler wasn't one that easily impressed as he said, Carlos had seen proof of that. And Tyler keeping up to date seemingly with the latest technology, it was even harder to surprise and impress him. Carlos knew Tyler gave his honest opinion on things, it was the reason Teswa had him as their star tester. So, to impress him from the start was an achievement in itself. "Well, if you are already impressed with just the reactor, then allow me to as you just put it, blow your mind more," Carlos returned. "The Exia is designed to excel at close quarters combat, though it can do midrange and long ranged combat as well. You will no doubt agree with that when I get to the arsenal."
Carlos picked up the nearby data pad so he could show Tyler data closer than just gesturing at the Gundam. He brought up the file on the new range of motion which this Gundam and the others in its series could do. The range of motion was more human-like than any previous mobile suits had been capable of, even Gundam types. Carlos held out the data pad for Tyler to see as he kept going, "The next improvement to note is the range of motion the Exia and others like it are capable of. There are more joints and complexities which allow the new range of moment and motion." Carlos had the file display the images which showed the new movements which the Exia could do. "As you can see by the file, the motions are more human-like than mobile suits have been capable of before now."
Tyler's mind was being smacked around with the things he was seeing this Gundam was able to do. And that smacking was in a seriously good way rather than what would cause headaches for him. The new range of motion much like the reactor was a game changer in Tyler's mind. And he said that being one of those that would fully use the new range of motion that others wouldn't be inclined to use. Tyler could already see some of the "moves" he could pull against opponents with the increased range of movement. He could do better martial arts moves that he couldn't before, which was exciting. The possibilities were sending shivers down Tyler's spine both good and non-nice ones. "Oh Carlos," Tyler started, "You're giving me great data, and dangerous inspiration to use against opponents. I know you don't mean to, but I assure you, I will be testing this new range of motion and giving you good feedback. What do you got to blow my mind and feed my more unorthodox side of my fighting style?"
Carlos laughed at Tyler's reference to his "unorthodox side" of his fighting style. He was well-aware his young friend had a "different" fighting style both with fighting with his fists and piloting a mobile suit. Most at Teswa were aware of Tyler's methods being unlike most and definitely not Federation military trained. If anything, most at Teswa preferred the way Tyler did things as his inclination to ignore protocol and procedure gave more test data. "Tyler, if you weren't aware, your unorthodox way of doing things is one of the reasons we at Teswa have you as our star tester," Carlos commented. "But let me move onto the propulsion and see what I can do." Carlos brought up the data on the reactor itself. "As I said, the reactor is the heart of the Exia's propulsion system. It has verniers built into the reactor itself and replace the function of thrusters." Carlos paused as there was one feature of the GN reactor that wasn't ready for use just yet, for it would need further testing and adjustments. "There is a feature of the reactor, which is there, but not usable until further adjustments are made. That feature is called the GN Burst mode and it will in theory increase the reactor's output for a period of time by a notable margin. But as I said, it is still in the development phase, so the feature is locked."
Tyler would hold his judgment until he could fully test the propulsion system the Gundam had. If what Carlos said was true, Tyler would be amazed with the developments. Yet, Tyler said nothing so that Carlos could keep going with his explanation. "With the propulsion out of the way, let me move onto the defensive systems. The armor the Exia has which is completely new. I'm sure you've already guessed the Gundam has a phase shift armor system, and that is true. It is the newly developed version, which is called Theta, which works with the particles which the reactor produces."
Carlos brought up the file on the E-Carbon armor plating before he continued, "However, the phase shift armor isn't the only defensive option the Exia has. The alloy the armor coverings are made out of is also new and is referred to as E-Carbon. E-Carbon is a recently developed synthetic alloy which is an artificial allotrope of carbon. I know that won't make sense to you but instead I will say that it is much stronger than steel by many times. This is partly so as E-Carbon is made up of countless tubes or fiber strands bundled together. With that configuration the alloy is made in, it is the strongest it can be. Koovos had already proven through testing that the E-Carbon plating is impervious to current projectile weapons, at least those which Koovos tested. Not even penetration projectiles weren't able to break, dent, or notably damage the armor plate. Beams will have an effect, but it is a reduced one from previously used material."
Tyler wasn't sure how much more his mind could be blown before he began giggling with the utmost glee. The new phase shift armor system Tyler didn't doubt would be neat to see work. But the armor plating and the material it was made of held Tylers attention. The stuff sounded amazing frankly and would beat any of the space-age alloy which was still used. It did the job which the phase shift armor did before. And that made Tyler wonder what the new system did which the armor plating didn't. "Okay, you got any recordings of Koovos's testing," Tyler questioned. "Not that I don't believe they do a thorough job, for I know they do and more. But I just want to see the kind of a beating this armor plating has been put under."
Carlos had a few of the recordings from Koovos for Tyler to view. Tyler viewed the recordings and was further impressed with the punishment the armor plating had held up against. Some of the things which Tyler saw would have him hesitant to get into the cockpit of the target machine, even with phase shift armor going. There was even a recording which answered Tyler's question about the phase shift armor. It appeared to disburse beams kind of like anti-beam coating did. However, it appeared most like it was stopped like deflection technology had shown itself to be able to do. The two defensive systems in tandem would make the Gundam a beyond nasty opponent to face. Tyler was looking forward to and no doubt would enjoy piloting the Gundam even if it would only be for a short period. "So my friend," Tyler posed, "does that conclude the systems this Gundam has, or is there more? Not that if there are most systems will you hear me complain, but I would love to hear about the arsenal it has to use."
Carlos laughed again with the excitement he was hearing in Tyler's voice. The next part of the "spiel" as Tyler had put it, was the arsenal the Exia had available. "No, the systems I have told you about are the main ones," he replied. "The arsenal was the next on the list for the explanation I'm giving you." Carlos brought up the files on the weapons which the Exia had to work with in combat. "The first thing I would state is all the weapons are particle beam based which is different than conventional beams as current technology mass-produces. So, with that in mind, the first option you have is four beam sabers. Two are docked on the back of the shoulders while the others are on the back hips of the Gundam. I doubt you need an explanation of how beam sabers work without your experience, so I will forego that."
Carlos switched to the next offensive weapon file before he continued, "There are GN particle vulcans stored in the forearms which will pop up for use. They are intended as a secondary weapon as they are lower powered than the main weapon options. However, Koovos is of the mind that the vulcans should be effective against the mass-production laminated armor mobile suits use. That is another thing which is on your list to test out if you don't mind and get or rather when you find the opportunity."
Tyler wouldn't say such to the Federation higher-ups, but testing things for Teswa was someone an excuse to do things he wasn't normally "allowed" to do. Carlos mentioning when rather than if Tyler getting the opportunity to test the Exia was a good example. Tyler would test the machine while he was out, whether ZAFT came or not. Should the ZAFT group come, then the Exia would be put to the full test, Tyler would make sure of that. Having four beam sabers to work with gave some fun options for Tyler to use against the opponents. The vulcans sounded interesting and Tyler would check those out when he could. Koovos needn't worry about getting feedback about the weapons, Tyler would give them plenty of it. "Oh, trust me Carlos," Tyler stated, "I will go through all this Gundam has to offer and give enough feedback for Teswa and Koovos to be cheering."
Carlos moved to the next file which was for the Exia's main offensive option. "Moving onto the main offensive option the Exia has to use. The weapons system is made up of two weapons and a small shield. The first weapon is a particle beam rifle which works much as a conventional beam rifle does. The second weapon is an E-Carbon blade which swings to be over the rifle when in use. The blade is able to have a thin layer of GN particles to increase the effective cutting ability for it. Particles aren't necessary for the blade to cut through things, it just can make it sharper. I don't doubt you will have your own way to describe the cutting ability when you try it for yourself."
Tyler couldn't remember the last time he was so excited to test something from Teswa as he was right now. The main weapon was neat, though it had its drawbacks that Tyler could see. The blade would likely be devastating to an opposing mobile suit, Tyler didn't doubt that. However, the size of the blade made its use in narrower spaces much more a hindrance. But with what Tyler was going to be going into, the Exia wouldn't have that issue to face. The Gundam would be helpful if not crucial for Tyler to be successful and pushing those that would be coming back. That was still Tyler's goal, and he didn't care what he used to get to that goal as long as he reached it. Tyler bowed to Carlos, "I would be more than happy to test this machine, my friend," he stated. "You were right, it should help me in the mess I will be getting into soon I don't doubt. I promise that I will return real data and honest feedback for you and your colleagues can pour over as you like." Carlos chuckled shaking his head, "Whatever the mess you are not giving details about, I wouldn't doubt you will be fine by its end. I will not ask what supplies you are taking with you, for I feel it would be better I not know. I will equip the rifle while you get to boarding the Exia so that you can leave when you settle."
Tyler nodded before he turned and retrieved his duffle bags. Tyler climbed onto the lift that would take him up to the cockpit before having it rise. As Tyler was rising, he watched as the main offensive option was lowered down from a storage bay. The weapon system was attached by the time Tyler reached the level of the cockpit. Tyler climbed into the cockpit dragging his duffle bags with him. He stored the bags behind the pilot seat before Tyler spun around and settled into the seat. Tyler glanced around the cockpit taking it in as he scanned it and found the layout was different than other cockpits Tyler had been in. There were the two side screens that made up the panoramic view the pilot used. The main system display was in the area that it was normally, but it was connected to the forward screen that had feeds to the suit's optics. There were two smaller system displays on either side of the forward screen. For the suit's controls, there wasn't a "throttle and control stick" as most mobile suits used. Instead, the two ideas seemed to have been combined into two control sticks, one for each hand. Most of the non-main controls were either on the forward system display or a console just below it. The two com-screens were still in the forward top area on both sides, like was standard in most mobile suits.
After taking in the layout, Tyler focused on the main display and found the control to switch on the OS. The OS booted up and the first thing that Tyler noticed was there being a sound which differed from what normally came with a mobile suit's OS coming up. The start up message did look familiar as it was similar to other Gundam types.

The theme of "Gundam" had stuck since it had appeared with the Atlantic Federation's prototypes had come onto the scene. Gundams had become much more than the original creators had likely ever imagined. From what some that Tyler had talked to had said, the G-Weapons had merely been a way for OMNI to make things equal. They had never intended to create super weapons which defined and helped end the Alliance-PLANT War. And honestly, with those that had piloted the prototypes had shown, it had proven the point. Tyler doubted any of the original pilots had intended to show the Atlantic Federation's machines could be super weapons.
The other thing that Tyler noticed was the operating system's boot-up was pretty quick. The system was ready to go before he expected it to be from habit of the mobile suits Tyler had worked with. He blinked for a moment at the OS already being up and ready to go as it was so quick. Tyler ended up shaking his head before taking in what the readouts were showing him. On one of the side displays, stats on the GN reactor were showing. From what Tyler could tell, the particle production was in the range that stated was acceptable. The reactor was in a mode named "GN Repose" which apparently meant particles were only being distributed to critical systems and nothing else. Tyler assumed that there would be a way to change that when he was ready to leave.
Once being sure that the reactor was doing as it should, Tyler moved onto exploring the systems the Exia had. There was nothing that Carlos hadn't already mentioned to Tyler which he could find that was outside what had been described to him. It was a habit that Tyler had developed for him to check over systems of a machine he'd never worked with. Everything appeared to be as it should from what Tyler could tell. He did find out that there was an optical scanner that acted as a security measure. Tyler assumed that would be needed to get the reactor to work actively when that came up. It took him a few minutes to familiarize himself with the Exia's systems.
Carlos contacted Tyler through the Exia's communication system, asking if he was ready to go. Tyler had the cockpit close and seal which then had the forward display show what was outside. Then he told Carlos he was good to leave Teswa in whatever way he would prefer. Carlos told Tyler he would move the Exia out into the open area of the complex. From there, Tyler would descend down to the water and exit through the underwater channel Teswa had. He had no issue with that, it would give an opportunity to see how the Exia operated underwater. As the Exia being moved toward the "canyon," Tyler had the optical scanner do its thing. Once his identity was confirmed, Tyler had the reactor disengage the GN repose mode. The reactor began distributing energy to all primary systems as well as increase its particle output somewhat.
When the Exia was facing the open area Teswa had, Tyler had the Gundam take off and descend down to the lowest level of the complex. The transition from the air to water was smoother than Tyler had expected it to be. Yes, he felt the transition, but it was a shaking that Tyler had thought it would be. Sure, Tyler had slowed his descent down a bit before he touched the water, but not by much. And then when the Exia was underwater, the resistance to movement that would happen to mobile suits would experience was also less than expectations. Tyler was keeping what he was observing in the back of his mind to include in the feedback he would give. Traveling underwater was smoother than Tyler had thought a mobile suit which wasn't designed to do the job could do.
Tyler had the Exia proceed through the channel heading for the entrance that led to the open ocean. When the bulkhead which secured the channel came into view, Tyler had the Exia's stealth system deploy. Tyler saw no reason to display the Exia off for ZAFT and/or the Alliance to get a picture of the Gundam, and closely examine it. That would give the two motivations to screech about something they had no business knowing about. The Alliance had already shown itself to abuse technology for military use to assert their domination. While ZAFT hadn't done that, Tyler feared there were some within ZAFT and around the PLANTs that would be willing to do similar. The two factions couldn't be trusted with new technology at this time with things as they stood and historical facts.
The bulkhead opened revealing the open ocean ahead for Tyler to see. Tyler zoomed out of the channel and turned to the open ocean. It would take hours to get to the island which the orphanage was on. Piloting a mobile suit for a long period of time could be tedious, but Tyler could handle it with what motivated him. Tyler would go over his plan for scenarios he may deal with when it came to the ZAFT group that would be coming. Tyler had the forward display show maps he would study as he traveled. Having the Exia maintain its course was rather simple and didn't need constant attention to keep as it was. So, that freed up Tyler to fine-tune his plan to counter those who were coming to do harm.
Hours went by and it was past noon when Tyler came into Orb territory. He adjusted his course to have him around the target island in less than thirty minutes. There was the work for Tyler to do to prepare for those he would be stopping. Tyler had determined the most likely landing point the ZAFT group would use so they could evade notice by those on the island. He planned to make the approach the assassins would use as hard and nasty as possible. The first thing Tyler would do was place proximity sensors around the orphanage to give him warning which was the ZAFT group would come from. That would be the way Tyler would make sure he could do something to slow those coming down. He would give enough time for all those in the orphanage to the shelter for their safety.
For the path that Tyler had determined the ZAFT group would use, he would use every mine he had to accomplish that idea. And if he started on the beach with mines, by nightfall, there would be no marks or any other signs of where the mines could be for the assassins to see. The approach after the beach wouldn't be any easier, it would also be a mine field for a distance. And when the assassins reached the second mine field, they would be in range for Tyler to attack them. That was the "ideal" scenario in the messy situation Tyler was expecting to face sometime tonight or tomorrow night. He would deal with those coming regardless which direction they approached from or what they had to work with. The kids at the orphanage didn't deserve being put in danger by others. None at the orphanage deserved assassins coming around to kill one of them and any that got in their way.
Tyler found an underwater cave that was a reasonable distance from the orphanage. He had the Exia come up in that cave and found a place he could have the Gundam stand where he could exit the cockpit. Tyler locked the reactor in its GN repose mode so there would be nothing for any to potentially detect. Then, Tyler climbed out of the cockpit, pulling his duffle bags along with him. He found the exit to the cave out to the island, though it was a bit of a tight fit for Tyler to work with. He managed to get himself and his duffle bags through the fissure he had found to get out of the cave. Tyler was focusing on the tasks he had ahead before he headed for the house. There was groundwork to get done as efficient as possible before doing what he could at the house. And that was all on top of not alerting the kids to something bad coming to the orphanage. Tyler didn't want to cause a panic with the kids as they shouldn't be worrying about what was coming.
After coming out of the cave into the fresh air, Tyler had to take a moment to catch his breath. The large duffle was heavy and getting to the fissure had been an uphill trek. So, Tyler was breathing hard with his hands on his knees. Once he'd caught his breath, he moved forward so he could get to work. Tyler started with putting his large duffle bag in a hiding spot he knew of somewhat close to the orphanage. From there, Tyler kept his smaller bag that had the sensors and the mines he would be laying out. He began with putting out the sensors in a pattern which would alert Tyler if anyone was approaching the orphanage. It would give a perimeter of just about two-hundred meters around the orphanage. That should be enough of a distance for Tyler to move, if need be, to counter the assassins. Once the sensors were hidden out of sight so they wouldn't be interfered with, Tyler moved on to the next task.
Tyler jogged down to the beach he had determined would be the approach path for the assassins. He glanced over the beach, doing some figuring for where to place the first minefield he would have to slow down the punks. After a minute or two, Tyler moved forward with his bag and began laying his minefield. The mines that Tyler was placing were known as dart mines. The reason they were referred to that way was due to their design. The mine had a thick barbed spike which would shoot up when the pressure sensor was tripped. The spike was to hold the target where it was for the spike to open and shoot off the sharp darts to pierce those nearby. Tyler had seen the dart mines in action, and it was scary as you wouldn't see the mine and wouldn't know about it until the spike pierced one's foot. Then thirty sharp darts shoot out in multiple directions to hit and pierce whatever they could. Tyler couldn't get the images of trees and other things with small parts of darts sticking out of them when he'd been shown videos of the mine's performance. As nasty as the mines were, Tyler was willing to use them against assassins that were trying to kill Lacus or someone else. The group coming were more than willing to slaughter all at the orphanage and likely planned to anyway if Tyler wasn't around if they could.
When Tyler had put out all the dart mines along the beach, Tyler withdrew form the beach carefully. He would make sure none of the kids came in this direction until the assassins were dealt with. Tyler then moved back a bit so he could lay the second minefield for those coming. The second minefield would have more traditional mines which had explosives attached to the pressure sensors. However, the way they deployed were easier as Tyler wouldn't have to dig holes like had used to be done. The mines had a drill on the bottom which helped them burrow down in the ground. Tyler would just have to go by and do some "touching up" before being done. The mines wouldn't be dangerous until Tyler had them arm which was done remotely. The second minefield covered up to thirty to forty meters from the orphanage. Tyler made sure him working wasn't noticed as he went about laying the minefield.
Once the preparations were done to Tyler's satisfaction, it was late afternoon. So, Tyler went back to where he'd left his larger duffle bag to retrieve it. He left the smaller bag there as he didn't need it anymore. Tyler took a moment to catch his breath again, wiping the sweat off his forehead which had come from the work he'd been doing. Tyler then hoisted the large duffle onto his back and began trudging toward the orphanage. He knew some of the kids would ask questions about the duffle bag he had, but he would tell them there was nothing inside for them. Tyler felt it was best the less that knew about what was coming was better. Granted, that put the responsibility of handling things squarely on Tyler's shoulders, but he was okay with that. Tyler would rather have the stress on his shoulders and blood on his hands that others do that if it could be helped.
Tyler glanced up to where the orphanage sat on the plateau which overlooked the sea below. The last orphanage had been a church and house connected to it. The new orphanage was a multi-floored and layered house. The orphanage was bigger than the last and was in a more defensive position than the previous. Tyler was taking in potential spots he could use to shoot from at the assassins. He hated that he was having to look through the lens of defending and protecting the place. But Tyler would do his utmost to make sure those at the orphanage lived and the assassins failed. It was the reason he had come to the orphanage, and he would take this mission seriously.
The trudge to the orphanage which was against a cliffside was not the funnest for Tyler. The large duffle bag hadn't gotten any lighter. However, he felt he would be wishing the bag was heavier with more weapons to work with against the assassins soon enough. So, Tyler bore the heavy bag and didn't complain about it with what was extremely likely to be ahead. He would get some time to rest before the main event arrived as it would happen during the night. The preparations he'd done would give Tyler an advantage for a time, and it should be enough to get things moving in the right direction. That was somewhat comforting for Tyler as he would be able to protect his friends and the kids the best he could. Yet, when Tyler arrived in sight of the house, he couldn't stop the smile as he saw a few of the kids looking out the windows towards him. Some disappeared likely to go tell others Tyler had come around. Tyler knew there would be questions asked of him, but he had worded answers for such things.
At the same time, Kira had been looking after some of the kids much like he did most days. Lacus was resting as she had been "in-charge" of the kids earlier this morning and the kids had been rambunctious today. Kira had told his mother and Reverent Malchio that he with Mr. Waltfeld and Miss Aisha could manage for the afternoon until dinner. The time frame was short enough that Kira didn't see things going too far out of control. Mr. Waltfeld and Miss Aisha tended to step in and help things not go that direction. Things had been quieter than they had been in the morning, which Kira was grateful for. That gave time for Kira to think upon recent events which had been worrying him.
Kira was getting worried about Cagalli with things as they had been going since Athrun had left. Athrun had mentioned to Kira he had set up some things before he'd gone back to the PLANTs. From what his friend had said, Kira had the impression Athrun had been preparing "countermeasures" against Yuna Serian. Kira hadn't missed Yuna doing things around Cagalli, nor that Cagalli didn't like what he did. Athrun had been preventing that from happening more often which Cagalli had appreciated. But with Athrun gone, Yuna hadn't taken long to go back to pestering Cagalli. Kira had been getting worried with how Cagalli was handling Yuna as she hadn't said anything to him. In fact, it had been more than a week since Cagalli had reached out to the orphanage now that Kira thought about it. He reminded himself he would need to call Cagalli and make sure she was doing okay today or tomorrow.
Athrun had ask Kira to be there for Cagalli if she needed support. He'd specifically said that should or rather when Yuna began bugging Cagalli to contact her regularly. Kira had been trying to do that, really he'd been trying. However, Cagalli tended to keep busy with governmental work she did. He had figured something had happened which had increased the work, but Kira couldn't say what that could be. Yet, even when Cagalli had been busy before, she had still made the time to talk to Kira. Thus, Kira was getting suspicious since the time he tended to call was the same as before. Plus, the ones who had answered Kira's calls hadn't been any he'd known. He knew most of those that Cagalli employed as secretarial staff, and they were told about him by Cagalli. So, it worried him that Yuna had gotten someone in between Kira and Cagalli. Cagalli's friend Myrna had assured Kira things were fine the last time she had come around. However, the woman's expression had been forced and she hadn't seemed to believe what she was saying.
Kira was brought out of his thoughts when two children came up to him chattering about something. It took a minute for Kira to get the general message the children were trying to get across. They were saying something about there being a visitor, which didn't make sense to him. There were no plans for a visitor to come by the orphanage that Kira knew of. There weren't many that came by unannounced with the orphanage being as isolated as it was on the island. With that in mind, someone coming by without an announcement and arrangements was odd. Kira began asking questions, but the children just started pulling him toward the foyer. Kira glanced around to see if Mr. Waltfeld or Miss Aisha were around to help, but he saw no sign of either of them.
Once Kira got to the foyer, he went and opened the front door and was shocked with what he saw. Standing in front of him was none other than one of his best friends, Tyler. Tyler had said nothing to imply he would be dropping by that Kira could recall. Tyler didn't normally do things on a whim or without a reason, he had proven that often enough. Yet here he was in at the front door and Kira had no idea what his friend was doing at the orphanage. "Tye," Kira questioned, "What are you doing here? You haven't said anything about dropping by for a visit and you normally do before coming."
Tyler didn't get the chance to answer, as the kids in the foyer surged forward and surrounded him. He knew he was popular with the kids, mostly as they knew he would try and find homes for them. Tyler had to keep a tight hold of the duffle bag, so it didn't drop or slip. With the weight of the bag and what it contained, it would do harm if it hit anyone. Tyler chuckled and then glanced to Kira to say for him to come and help him be "unsurrounded" by the kids. He loved being around the kids when he was able, but he was focused on something specific this trip. The noise in the foyer did attract the other adults in the orphanage to come and see what was going on. Caridad and Lacus quickly go down to calming the children down and organizing them. Tyler kept telling the children that there was nothing in the bag he had for them as the women were organizing them.
Andrew, Aisha, and Murrue came and watched the scene as it was playing out. Andrew and Aisha were wondering what had brought Tyler around the orphanage. The kid didn't appear around the place without a reason that they had seen. So, for him to pop around here had the two former ZAFT soldiers curious and worried there was something going on that they weren't aware of. If Tyler was aware of something and it was problematic enough, the kid would get involved himself. Should there be something going to happen which Tyler was coming to work on, that was rarely a good or rather a safe thing. The two intended to ask Tyler some questions when others weren't around to see what they could learn.
Once the kids had been organized, Tyler faced Kira, and shrugged his shoulders, "Well, I had some free time since I'm still waiting for orders to come down. I thought it has been a while since I've swung around here and checked on everyone." Tyler gazed at his friend, "I would hope that I'm still welcome around here. If not, then what did I do for that to be the case, for it was not intended to be mean or malicious in anyway." Kira waved his hands as Tyler was and would be always welcome around the orphanage. "No no, you're still welcome around here Tye, just didn't expect you to show up out of the blue like this."
Tyler laughed in response, "I'm only teasing you," he replied. "Like I said, I had some free time and wanted to check on things at the orphanage. You tend to be quiet and say very little to Athrun and me most of the time. Since that is the case, we end out coming by to check on you and the rest." Tyler shrugged, "Sorry I didn't call ahead, but my free time is limited you know, so sometimes I just have to swing by." Tyler said he would love to stay for dinner and the night at least which was fine. He even said that he was willing to take the sofa in the sitting room. Kira tried to convince Tyler to use the guest room, but Tyler said the sofa would do just fine for him.
It was after dinner while the kids were doing their evening routine that Andrew and Aisha approached Tyler. Tyler had put his duffle in the corner of the sitting room so he could have quick access to it. He took out the small control unit for the mines he had places. The sensors' data were coming into the control unit and showed there were none in their range. All the mines were broadcasting their signals they were waiting to be armed. Tyler would arm the mines once the rest went to sleep, and Tyler settled down for the night. But at the sound of footsteps, Tyler slipped the control unit back into the duffle bag. He didn't want others being involved at this point who didn't need to be. When Tyler glanced to the doorway, he found Mr. Waltfeld and his partner entering the room. "There something I can do for you two," Tyler asked. "Nothing personal, just got a lot on my mind right now."
Aisha gave Tyler a knowing look. The young man should have an educated guess as to why they were here. Tyler's sudden appearance was suspicious enough to warrant further investigation. And Tyler, saying he had a lot on his mind suggested there was something he was here to handle that none at the orphanage knew about. "And what might you have on your mind," Aisha inquired. "Does that have anything to do with why you have swung by the orphanage?"
Tyler had figured that at least some of those at the orphanage would figure out he wasn't just dropping by because he could. Waltfeld and his partner were in the forefront of those that would be suspicious of Tyler popping up. Murrue wouldn't be all that far behind Tyler would bet as she wasn't as dense as Kira or Lacus could be. However, Tyler didn't want the kids and others worrying and panicking. He doubted the two former ZAFT soldiers would spread what Tyler was actually here to do to the rest. But there was the chance that others could overhear the conversation. Thus, it was better that the two didn't know what Tyler was around the orphanage to do. So, Tyler didn't answer right away, considering what he could say to not let slip what was likely going to happen. "It's nothing to be concerned with right now," he said. "I would turn in early were I you though."
Andrew knew Tyler's answer had been carefully worded, so it would not give away too much information. Tyler may say that whatever it was he was here for wasn't a concern right now, but Andrew felt that would change soon enough. For the kid to say it would be a good idea to turn in early suggested whatever was going to happen would be later in the night. It was obvious to Andrew that Tyler knew something was coming, but he was unwilling to give details about it. why Tyler was unwilling to give details, Andrew couldn't say other than not causing panic around the orphanage. So, he felt it was best to take the warning/hint that Tyler had given them and see what would happen. Andrew inclined his head, "Thanks for the advice," he remarked, "I think we will take it."
Andrew snagged Aisha and pulled her out of the room leaving Tyler there. Aisha glanced at Andrew as it was unlike him to not push for more information about a coming event. "Andy," Aisha said quietly, "It is unlike you to not push for more information with an event coming our way. Whatever the event is, it is unlikely a good event with Tyler popping up. Why are you so quick to accept an answer that doesn't tell us much?"
Andrew knew Aisha was right that he didn't normally just step back and not push for information. It was part of his preparation for dicey situations that came up, so they weren't fatal. However, knowing Tyler as Andrew had come to know, the kid did more prep than Andrew would and came out of situations that would kill others without major injury. So, Andrew trusted that Tyler had laid groundwork to help those at the orphanage and himself get through whatever was coming their way. "The reason I'm not pressing for more info is Tyler has popped up," Andrew reasoned. "You can say what you want about the kid, but he puts in the work to prepare for what comes his way. I'm counting on that preparation to help us make it through whatever is coming. That kid is here for whatever is coming to the orphanage's way, that much is obvious to me. And whatever is enough of a problem that Tyler came personally with supplies, that says to me the kid is taking it seriously."
Aisha wasn't going to argue with Andy's reasoning. He had valid points about Tyler and the lengths the kid went for those he cared about. For him to come himself to the orphanage was not a good sign of the coming event. But as Andy said, Tyler was the type that did prep work more than others did most of the time. That prep work would no doubt pay off for Tyler and those at the orphanage. "So then, how will we take the "advice" he gave about turning in early?" Aisha questioned. "It was enough of a hint that whatever the event coming is will likely happen tonight some time." Andrew chuckled softly, "You got that hint too, did you?" Andrew paused, thinking it would be a good idea to turn in early. That would let them be ready when the event occurred to jump in and help protect the kids. "I would say it is a good idea to do. Also have a tool close by to grab and use when things start."
A/n
That's where I'll leave off to pick up in the next Phase. Okay, this is the first of a couple of phases which will make up what goes on with Tyler and those with him. Thus far, I would say this will go on for at least three phases, likely more before it is over, I can't say yet. I know this Phase has less action, which the next Phase will certainly have, but this is laying the foundation for what's next. I am going through trying to expand and correct things the original version either got wrong or I wanted to change to something different. I certainly hope you readers are appreciating the time and effort that goes into this, for it isn't short. Having you lot enjoying what I write is a major motivator for me so that you know. But let me move on to the highlights of the Phase and explanations.
The first scene where Tyler is going over the report does have some things to go over. I know in canon, ZAFT is portrayed as the "good guys" during the Destiny portion of the anime. I will not deny that with Durandal leading it, things have changed for the PLANTs and ZAFT. However, that doesn't mean it is completely great and doesn't do things they should not. The event where some try to assassinate Lacus is an important event in the story, even if canon may not show that in the way I do. It is a transition point in the story, but you will see that later on. The file that Tyler sees shows that ZAFT is still willing to do "things" that others won't know about to gain advantages.
I do go into detail with the file Tyler is reading and do so for a reason. I wanted to show that there are some informants for the Federation's network which are trusted than others. There is a classification scale which the trust of an informant is assigned to which shows how valuable their data is seen. And some of those are in positions which they can get seriously valuable and even dangerous information for the Federation. That puts them at risk should they ever be discovered by those they are around.
The orders that Tyler reads is about the event that canon goes through I want to say in episode 13 in the anime should any want to watch that. The orders don't really come up in canon, but I deal with details which canon doesn't. This scene also shows some of Tyler's experience with his military service with the Federation. He knows how orders for special forces and equivalent groups are written having seen them several times himself. Thus, he is very concerned with the points that jump out at him. With him being an infiltrator in SOLAS, he knows about less known things with the other two factions' militaries. That is why he is aware of terms which ZAFT black opts teams use for what they do. The rest of this scene is Tyler preparing to go and protect the orphanage as it should be apparent.
The next scene I'll discuss is when Tyler goes to Teswa to meet with Carlos and pick up the Exia. For those that have read the original, you already knew that I brought in technology from 00 Gundam. The use of Solar Reactors fitted in my mind and was an ideal alternative to nuclear technology the SEED universe depends on. Allow me to go into a little detail on why I chose 00 Gundam technology rather than Universal Century which I seriously considered. I have nothing against the series and technologies which the UC uses. I could have used those and fitted them into my story, and I may still later on, I haven't decided yet. However, at this point, "Newtypes" and "Coordinators" are too similar to one another in my opinion to work with at this time. You can go to the Gundam Wikia and look up Newtypes to see an explanation of the difference between the two.
With the introduction of the Exia Gundam, I know I went into quite a bit of detail, which some would say aren't needed. But when I work with a mobile suit, whether it is one I create myself or take from somewhere else, I like to show how it isn't a copy of another. I say that since I'm working on another machine which the Minerva gets and I will be using this justification with that too. Back to the Exia, there are two points I would like to make with the differences I put into my version and what 00 Gundam uses. First, the addition of phase shift armor is significant with the type it is. The E-Carbon does essentially what phase shift armor did before, so if that was all the phase shift armor did with the Exia, then it wouldn't be needed. Thus, the new type of phase shift is to help defend against beams. This will be what leads to the Akatsuki's beam deflection system among other things. And the other thing I want to point out is the GN vulcans since they aren't the same as 00 Gundam's is. My Exia's vulcans are more powerful and effective against laminated armor which most non-gundams have. Understand, this is the introduction of particle beams which is new to the SEED universe and can do more than conventional beams. Both of those will come up in the next phase rest assured.
In the final scene where Tyler gets to the orphanage, I want to go over the prep work he does. Unlike in the original, Tyler puts out two mine fields for those that are going to be coming to kill Lacus. The mines he uses in each field is different, but they both serve the same purpose of doing harm and potentially killing those going through them. Yet, I used this to show again how serious Tyler is taking protecting the orphanage from ZAFT. I also changed the layout of the orphanage after watching the anime again as I was going off of the building that was around before the break the world incident. That does change a few things in the fight which will be in the next phase I promise.
In conclusion, I hope you lot are enjoying this story and this phase. I know this one doesn't have a lot of action, but that comes in the next phase which this was laying the foundation for. This phase and the next were originally going to be combined, but length said that wouldn't happen. As I always do, I ask some of you to take the time to write a review and tell me what you think of this phase. You can also ask questions or give criticism, though I ask it be constructive and not just why you hate this story or what you wish I wouldn't do. The work on the next phase is moving along, but we'll see how it goes. Peace out until the next phase.

Armaments
· GN Beam Sabers
Mounted on the back of the shoulders and back of the waist, The beam sabers are a hilt with the ability to activate a beam blade by generating a positron field filled with GN Particles, which the Exia has four in total. While the beam saber has a high-power rating, one disadvantage is that their performance can be decreased by surrounding atmospheric conditions or methods of beam diffusion. The sabers also have a dagger mode that allows them to put out a shorter blade length which makes them harder to diffuse.
· GN Sword
A solid GN blade attached to a miniature forearm shield, which serves as the Exia's primary weapon, and the largest blade amongst the Seven Swords. It works by applying GN Particles over the solid sword which greatly increases the sharpness and cutting power though the sword can still be used when there are no particles applied to it. Although the blade is considered to have great destructive power, there are situations where it cannot be used due to its size.
The GN Sword can also be used in Rifle Mode, whereby the blade returns to its idle folded state exposing the muzzle of a beam rifle. The Rifle Mode was created to avoid the equipping of excessive armaments on Exia, and thus enhance the ease of movement which the unit's systems depend heavily on.
· GN Vulcans
Small guns installed in both arms of Gundam Exia. They can pop up in the forearms when being used. Originally meant as secondary weapons, these low powered weapons are equipped with main purpose of diversion. However, they are effective against Laminated Armor. The vulcans were meant to be a quick response that countered the transformation time for the GN blade. Though the power of their beams are weak, their high firing rate means that they can be a threat to conventional weapons that lack E-Carbon armor. This is also very useful when engaging small, fast, maneuverable targets such as DARGOON pods and missiles.
Special Equipment & Features
· GN Solar Reactor
When protons are forced to decay, a great amount energy is released with GN Particles as a byproduct of the process. Smaller units have also been designed, and the special advantage is the non-generation of excess heat. The new series of Federation mobile suits are powered with this technology. Due to its special core, the reactors are difficult to produce in mass and take a set period of time.
• Phase Shift Type-Theta (PS-T)
A new variation of Phase Shift Armor developed by Teswa R after the initial development of the Solar Reactor. It works similar to the original idea as an armor system but is designed more to block and disburse beams much as anti-beam coating. With the solar reactor, it allows a kind of regenerative anti-beam like armor for the machine.
• Phantom Stealth System
An improved system and based on the Specter Optical Camouflage Field that the generation used during the majority of the Alliance-PLANT War of Federation mobile suits. It is harder to see the difference between the projections put out and the surrounding scenery and is more efficient with its energy consumption. Before the Faction War, the stealth system is paired with an idea similar to the OIS-X209 Shadow Gundam's "Echo Trace Emitter" and provides even better undetectability.
• Operating System
The OS that the Exia has is the G.U.N.D.A.M. Defender, the Federation's system for working with a Solar reactor.
