So yeah, I'm back with more, sooner than I expected. Rumours of Miyuki spread among the demon realm and Sesshoumaru is sulking about it. Tsubaki decides to enact her jealousy of Kikyo by attacking Miyuki and Sesshoumaru protects her like the Tsundere he is.
Lots of fluffiness and Sesshoumaru being a stubborn shit XD
reviews are appreciated
"Have you heard? The pathetic half breed sibling of Sesshoumaru has reproduced"
"A quarter demon? Barely any power may as well be human"
"With a priestess no less, she'll destroy demon-kind"
"I bet her flesh tastes delicious"
Sesshoumaru growled to himself, ever since Miyuki's birth the rumours had begun to spread, as expected of such a unique birth. It wasn't uncommon for half demons to be born, humans and demons mated all the time. However, quarter breeds especially birthed by priestesses were rare, as most chose to stick to their own. Some half breeds chose to become fully human or demon, some mated with humans and watered out the demon blood, and on the rare occasion out of shame, would mate with full demons to strengthen their demon blood. People knew he shared genes with her, mocking him, their family, their bloodline. Pitying him, insulting his niece, assuming the usual gossip that surrounded hybrids. He grew tired of their ceaseless prattle, for he knew the truth of Miyuki. They all imagined how easy it would be to beat her, to crush her, how quickly the battle would be over, watching her perish with fear in her eyes. But she was more potent than demons realised, he had felt it himself. However, this is what he had hoped to avoid, the embarrassing rumours, wondering how his father had coped after marrying the princess Izayoi. How he had ignored the rumours that would follow after divorcing his mother and choosing to live out his days with a human mate. How he was in a similar situation, facing what his father had so long ago, his reputation as a demon lord, all because his brother fell for a human.
"Lord Sesshoumaru are you well? I'm aware the trivial gossip surrounding that child has become problematic. But I'm sure if you silence them it will soon deplete" Jaken reassured him. This had to be humiliating for him, being dragged into his half brothers problems all because of his weakness for humans. His master didn't deserve such treatment.
Sesshoumaru hummed, though in the past he would have beaten Jaken for his insolence and speaking out of line. He had no desire to involve himself in the matter, nor did he care for Jaken's opinion. To slaughter those demons would merely start a battle he would rather avoid, instead reflecting on his niece. He remembered how shaky Miyuki had been staring at him, bowing her head and close to tears, probably she assumed he hated her, which was expected. She had been wary of him from the start, aware of how much stronger he was, her instincts screaming that he was dangerous, wary that despite their blood ties they were strangers. Despite his dislike of his brother and hatred for the death of their father, he couldn't bring himself to hate Miyuki, she was innocent in all of this, dragged into family affairs. His rivalry with InuYasha, his grief of losing his father, his pride as a demon lord, being given Tenseigha, Miyuki had no ties to it. Miyuki had been informed of her family history, of her grandfather, of his demise. However, she respected him, kept her distance, despite any affection she had for him she avoided him. Sesshoumaru admitted he had curiosity of her, she was smarter than her father had been at that age, due to her mother. "It's meaningless Jaken, they have never met her, nor do they understand her power. They may say what they like until they have crossed her path" Sesshoumaru sighed. However, InuYasha would do well to protect her, she had a target on her back
Kaede wandered through the village, gripping her bow and arrow tightly, adorning the same priestess robes her sister wore, her lessons for the day were over and she felt proud, she was learning fast and her sister's teachings had done her well. Learning to channel her powers, grow stronger and more efficient, she may never match up to Kikyo but she was growing at her own pace. Soon, she would become a mentor to Miyuki too. The travel to and from the temple was tiring, training her mind and body into harmony and discarding the expectations of her previous life. She would never marry, she would never have children, she would never live a normal life.
"Lady Kaede, how were lessons?" a villager called
Kaede blushed, lady? She would have to get used to hearing that, she knew Kikyo had expected it and grown accustomed. But she wondered if she ever would. Now that she was a priestess in training officially, her title and reputation around the village had changed. No longer did she live in Kikyo's shadow. She was the babysitter of her niece, next guardian of the temple, and perhaps the next protector of another village. It was all happening so fast she felt overwhelmed "I… uh… fine…" she mumbled. She was still a child, but she felt so different now, unlike the other children in the village. But then it wasn't uncommon for girls her age to start training, taking years of their life to harness their powers, abandoning their childhoods for duty. Was this how her sister felt when she started training? Ever since Sesshoumaru showed up in the village, she felt on edge, aware that he was a threat and InuYasha didn't trust him. Like he would show up from anywhere and snoop on them. She didn't know what he had planned for Miyuki, but she was going to keep an eye on him, she didn't like him and she didn't trust him in the slightest. From all the stories she had heard of how he had treated InuYasha growing up, what was to say he wouldn't transfer that to Miyuki? That he would turn cold, hostile, cruel and manipulative towards her. There was no way she would let that happen, Miyuki was her niece, her family, she needed to protect her. Once her powers became stronger she could hold her own against him too, she had a long way to go but Kikyo hadn't become this powerful overnight either. Her journey was vastly different from her sisters.
Due to the injury, she had suffered previously, Kikyo misdirected her arrow, she now wore an eyepatch over her wounded eye, which she worried would scare Miyuki, an ugly scar across her eye from where the arrow pierced her flesh. Medicinal herbs and healing had been useful, but the guilt that Kikyo harboured would never fully heal, knowing she was responsible for her sister's blindness. No amount of spiritual power could undo what was done, but she refused to allow Kikyo to blame herself, it was an accident and she didn't love her sister any less. She would just have to work harder as a priestess to earn her reputation. Kikyo would never hurt her intentionally, she was wise, kind and loved by the entire village. Accidents in battle happened, no matter how skilled the priestess.
Kaede approached the hut wearily, sighing in relief, she would be glad to change into her kimono again and then rest, priestess training took its toll on her and it was never easy. She wondered how Kikyo coped all this time and how she became so effortlessly strong, she wondered if she could ever match up to her. Always prepared to fight, always putting your life on hold to protect the village, realising that you had a barrier around yourself compared to normal civilians. Not only would she someday take over for her sister, but she would nurture Miyuki too. Miyuki was the next generation of priestess, one that had never been seen before, she would need guidance along her conflicting path. Miyuki resembled Kikyo and Izayoi, two great women who she would need to match up to, one who had birthed InuYasha and one whom had guarded the shikon jewel. Following in their footsteps, wishing to live up to the legacy that both women had left, stories that would be shared for generations to come. Both of them shouldered the responsibility, She had always known that she was weaker than Kikyo, that she had a lot to learn. She had always been in her sisters shadow, merely following her around, left in awe of her achievements. But she wondered if she was in over her head, that maybe this was a mistake and her powers could never match. If she would ever become as strong as she hoped to be, or if this injury was proof she wasn't cut out to be a priestess.
Miyuki curled up into a ball, resting her chin on her knees and staring into the distance, her eyes filled with conflict. Now she knew why her parents had shielded her, why they warned her and what she would someday face. She knew that there were evil demons out there, the same ones that had caused the wound to her aunt's face. She remembered when Kaede came back to the hut, her right eye pooling with blood, crying and sobbing, her clothes splattered, her mother's face warped with guilt and tears. They never told her what happened, only that there had been an accident, shielded from the whispers of the adults, pulled from the room so she wouldn't have to witness anything. Doctors cleaned the wound, sowing the skin into place, the scent of medicinal herbs. People holding Kaede down as she thrashed and struggled. InuYasha had taken her from the hut, held her in his arms and distracted her, his gaze darkened and filled with pain. He told her that Kaede would be fine, but she wasn't allowed to see her. But she heard Kaede's cries and whimpers of pain, wondering what had happened, when she next saw Kaede, she saw the scar across her eye, red, angry and covering her face. Miyuki had whimpered in fear, panic evident on her features, trembling, realising now why she was screaming so much. To suffer such a painful wound was unimaginable. Never would that eye open again, never would she see the beautiful brown colour, in its place were bandages and later a black iron patch over her eye, so different. Miyuki clung to her aunt, asking if she was ok, if she was hurt and what caused it, a potent mixture of anger and sadness filling her chest. Kaede had always looked out for her, acting as an older sister towards her, yet she was the one to get hurt.
Kaede explained she was hurt in battle, but she would live, her fate could have been far more severe but she survived. She had gotten away with her life and for that she was grateful. She would merely have depleted eyesight. Later Miyuki learned of the accident her mother had caused, accidentally shooting Kaede in the eye while fighting a demon. The arrow had been focused on the demon, not realising Kaede was on the other side, that when she hit the demon, she hit Kaede too. Why her mother had looked so sad and guilty, why her mother had become so quiet, tearful and bitter. InuYasha comforting his wife, soothing her sorrows and shielding Miyuki. She knew her mother hadn't meant to hurt her aunt, they had an immensely strong bond. Yet she felt so afraid. Miyuki heard a shift behind her before she felt the familiar weight of her father's hand on her head, a jolt of surprise ran through her briefly. Though it was quickly replaced by relief and happiness "How…" she trailed off. Whenever she was lost, scared or frightened he always knew where to find her and what to say. But then his demonic senses were far stronger than her own.
"I go to high places when I need to think too, I mean the roof vastly differentiates from a tree but…. It was easy to work out" he smiled. When he was young, he had learned to hide and protect himself from danger quickly, so it was second nature to him now. He now just enjoyed the headspace of occasionally hiding in trees, on rooftops and other elevated places when he wanted to be alone. Miyuki was his daughter, they had much in common and this was one of those traits. He knew where to find her merely by reflecting on his past actions. Behavioral patterns that made them similar. Miyuki was still a child and while they had tried to protect her from hardship and cruelty, unfortunately life was cruelly unpredictable.
Miyuki shifted, if she couldn't see how could Kaede fight demons? If she was wounded how would she lead? Would people bully her now too? Would she be labelled a freak? She was still training to become a priestess and yet her path had been deviated "Will auntie Kaede be… she sounded like she was hurting…" she whimpered. Kaede did her best to hide her scar from others, including Miyuki as to not scare her, but many people still stared and gossiped. Was the wound worse than it looked?
InuYasha's face warped into conflict, he'd known Kaede for nearly two years now, remembering how she was a miniature Kikyo, though she was far more stubborn. Nobody could have predicted what happened, not even Kikyo, injuries were sustained in battle, even demons knew scars. But unlike demons, they couldn't heal or regrow limbs, such as the weakness of humans, but Kaede was a fighter like her sister, she would make it. Kaede would never let this injury dictate her fate as a priestess, she would forge her own path and grow stronger. But he knew how frightened Miyuki would be, to see her aunt so gravely injured. "Kaede's a fighter, just like mama, she'll have some trouble adjusting but she'll be back to being a pain in the ass soon enough" he reassured her. Kaede had been sassing him ever since they met, she was stubborn, headstrong and determined. She wouldn't let something like this deter her path. Miyuki nodded softly, she was glad her father had checked in on her, easing her burdens. She felt her father wrap his arm around her, pulling her into his arms and resting her head against his chest. He cupped her head and stroked her hair softly, his gaze still directed into the distance, he spoke not a word but he felt her fear, her anxiety and sadness. She was still a child, she was still learning of the world around her, in such a short time she had met her estranged uncle and now her aunt had been wounded. Miyuki whimpered, nuzzling against her father as tears spilled down her cheeks, breathing in his familiar scent. She wanted her auntie to be ok, she was scared, she still attended her training, she still wore a smile on her face. But what if she got hurt again? What if she lost her other eye? She didn't want anything to happen to her family.
Tsubaki smirked, her crimson lips warping into a wicked grin, she had heard the news of what happened to Kikyo's beloved little sister, wounded at her own hands. After the humiliation of deflecting her curse and then shattering the jewel, Kikyo had ruined her life. Taking away her right to become the jewels guardian and then robbing her of her beauty, she couldn't forgive what she had done. Ruining her reputation, forced to endure the scar on her face. The grief and guilt must have been eating away at her, knowing she had used the hands that wielded her arrow to injure someone she loved. How she loved it, to know Kikyo was in pain, she deserved it, she deserved this sadness, for warping her curse back at her, causing this ugly scar on her face. She wanted Kikyo to suffer, to know she was a threat, that she had wronged her, a fact she would never allow her to forget. Kikyo would be forced to accept that she could hurt the ones she loved so easily, that one wrong judgement could shatter the delusion that she was superior. That no matter how perfect she appeared, she could become the villain. Looking at her sister's face and knowing she was to blame "Dear Kikyo, if you can't protect your dear sister, what use are you to your daughter?" she cackled.
Miyuki perched by a pool, splashing her feet in the water and staring at her reflection, her eyes roaming the water to see if she could notice any fish. The cool of the water was a relief from the heat, but she enjoyed this alone time, reflecting on what her father had said. She knew none of the villagers would come looking for her here, unless they were in large numbers, out of feat that a demon would attack them. But Miyuki could roam the woods and avoid danger, using her intellect, senses and claws to protect herself. Maybe her aunt would like some flowers, or a small gift to make her feel better, but then Kaede tended to keep her hobbies secret. She rarely opened up to other people, not unless she trusted them. She didn't know how her aunt could still train to be a priestess despite only having one eye, but she admired her strength and resilience, pushing herself forward. Her family were strong and powerful people, that much she was aware of, her grandfather was a demon general, her uncle was the lord of the western lands, her father was a powerful Hanyou and her mother was a respected priestess. She loved her mother, her father and her aunt, all of them protected her and believed in her. Maybe her uncle too, if she got to know him better, that is if he wanted anything to do with her. She knew her auntie was strong, capable, tougher than she looked, maybe papa was right, Kaede would bounce back from this and return to her old self. But she couldn't help but worry.
Suddenly, she felt a chill run down her spine, her blood turning to ice, the feeling of eyes watching from somewhere hidden making her skin crawl. Her ears pricked as she heard a rustling in the grass nearby, jumping to her feet trickles of water still running down her legs. Maybe the local children were going to play a prank on her again, they really enjoyed being mean to her. Despite her mother's status, many didn't trust her out of fear she would turn rabid and attack people. They avoided her and urged their children not to become involved with her. Though the rare few offered her snacks and let her play with their children, most treated her coldly. Gripping her hands into balled fists, prepared to face them fearlessly and confront them on harassing her. Her gaze roamed in the direction of the sound, attempting to find the culprit "H… Hello?" she babbled. The grass remained still, the wind was soft and the trickling sound of water filled her ears, there wasn't a soul for miles, but she could sense it. A demonic aura mixed with a spiritual aura, but it wasn't anything like the power her mother explained she held. It wasn't the same warm and comforting feeling her mother had, it wasn't the same potent, wild and fiery demonic aura of her father. She had never felt anything like it, an unnerving feeling spread through her body, warped, polluted and poisonous, she didn't like it. As though the spiritual power was poisoned, corrupted. She stepped back into the water, her feet splashing, creating mini ripples and waves "This isn't funny" she pressed. Then she saw the grass moving, something coming closer and closer, crawling through the grass, perhaps it was merely an animal like a rabbit or something. But no animal harboured this kind of energy, she bit her lip, focusing on the shape. Suddenly, a large green snake dived from the grass, lunging at her with open fangs. Miyuki yelled, leaping into the air and avoiding the snake, the creature splashing into the water in which she was previously standing. Coiling itself in the water, thrashing around angrily. Miyuki began running in the opposite direction, her feet rushing through the grass, her eyes wide with fear, her young mind attempting to process this. A snake, that snake tried to bite her, she had done nothing to antagonise it, nor was she something the common snake would eat as prey. Something felt off, is that what she felt? That snake didn't have the aura of a regular one, it felt dangerous, the same polluted aura followed it. The snake hissed, diving into the grass after her, its shape hidden by the colour, determined to catch up to her. Miyuki whimpered, her feet carrying her as fast as she could, relieved to inherit her demonic speed. She needed to get higher, she needed to focus, a hiding place.
Tsubaki smirked, like mother like daughter, she didn't think finding the child would be so easy but her demonic essence was so familiar. However, she hadn't expected that she would sense her attack so quickly compared to the ignorance of children her age. The child of Kikyo was indeed smart, sensing her shirohebi almost instantly, she had her mother's power, dodging it before the snake could sink its teeth into her. Leaping into the air and running away, attempting a futile escape as if she could outrun it. But the snake had the upper hand, its green colour keeping it hidden in the grass, allowing it to camouflage easily meaning Miyuki couldn't see it. Easily catching up on her and remaining untraceable. Was Kikyo's offspring as strong as she? It seemed Kikyo had passed on her powers, creating a stronger descendant to protect the temple. Her spiritual awareness was starting to take effect most definitely, otherwise, she wouldn't have sensed her pet sneaking up on her. She was indeed fast, her senses sharper than average humans, but that would only get her so far if she couldn't use her powers yet. She wasn't old enough to use a weapon, she had no priestess training, even her developing powers hadn't been fully utilised or harnessed "Run rabbit run" she smirked.
Miyuki's eyes stung with tears but she kept running, she could smell the snake and it was getting closer, why was it chasing her? Who was causing it to chase her and why? Who hated her? Who held such a severe grudge against her that they wanted to hurt her? What had she done wrong? Contemplating any of her actions that may have angered someone. Was this a test? Teaching her to use her powers? That's right, she couldn't away, she couldn't show fear, she needed to be strong. She bared her fangs and turned, retracting her claws as the creature lunged at her, swiping to slice the creature's face. Channeling her father's anger, thinking of all the times she had seen him use his claws, mimicking a weaker version of her fathers attack. Causing it to screech in pain and curl up, hissing in pain as its flesh was ripped, however, it was still in one piece. Merely deterred from its previous attack momentarily. She ran, dashing away while she had the upper hand, surely she had blinded the creature, meaning it couldn't see her.
Tsubaki growled, tsking under her breath, this was taking too long and this meant she would have to do this herself. That little brat had wounded her beloved pet, slashing its eyes and blinding its vision. She thought this would be easier, it seemed Miyuki was indeed stronger than she looked. The blood of her Hanyou father coming to light, proving she was a monster, though she hadn't killed it, she had wounded it badly.
Miyuki leaned against a tree, panting heavily, small beads of sweat forming on her brow, her chest heaving as her eyes remained wide with fear, biting her lip nervously. The snake was gone, she could no longer feel it, but the power she had sensed became stronger. She felt eyes on her, being watched, observing her fear and panic. Had someone sent that snake to hurt her? Or maybe a snake demon was controlling normal snakes and using them to attack her? But why? This didn't make any sense, though her parents had warned her, she had never faced something as scary as this. Who could hate her? She knew the villagers were wary of her and some gave her cold looks, but none had done anything mean to her, none had harmed her. If anyone held a grudge against her, if someone had an issue with her, they would need to confront her parents. Nobody in the village was foolish enough to anger them.
"Well little one, you're a smart one indeed, I'd expect nothing less as the child of Kikyo" an unfamiliar voice chuckled. Kikyo had taught her well, already influencing her with lessons and making sure she was prepared for reality. She was the spitting image of Kikyo but had the eyes of her father, the eyes of a demon. For a child like her to be accepted as a priestess was blasphemy, a joke on the reputation of their lineage.
Miyuki flinched, turning on her heel to face whoever the voice belonged to, her ponytail whipping in the air. A tall woman dressed in black robes, dark hair falling on her back, a shell on her forehead and alluring makeup appeared. Her lips were as red as the rouge her mother wore, the emblem on her forehead reminding her of the Beni that belonged to her grandmother. Miyuki had never met a woman like this before, she was indeed beautiful, but her power was immense, not as strong as her mother but matched. She had never met another priestess before, aware they existed but they were located in areas close to their villages or temples. The polluted power she felt belonged to this woman, she smelled the snake on her, meaning she had sent it. This woman meant to hurt her, this woman tried to kill her But why? "Who?" she pressed
Tsubaki smirked, it seemed Kikyo had kept many secrets from her daughter, memories of her past she wished to forget. "I'm an old friend of your mother, she never mentioned me?" she teased, Miyuki shook her head. "I came after you were born, I wished to witness what may have caused Kikyo to throw away such a promising future. To taint her purity for the sake of a demon hybrid infant" she hummed. Kikyo had abandoned her path, abandoned her fate, warping her future and abandoning her role as guardian. The role she had coveted for herself which Kikyo had been blessed with and so easily threw away. Pretending to live the life of a normal woman. Miyuki winced, so this woman hated demons too, the same people her mother had warned her about. The people who would look at beings such as her father and herself as freaks. Her gaze was cold, her eyes sharp, despite the smile on her face it felt malicious, but, she held her ground.
"For a priestess to birth a demonic child, it's unheard of, but then your father seduced her" she mocked, a priestess was supposed to be pure, sacrificing a normal life for her destiny. Marriage, love, family, all of those things were never part of their life, yet Kikyo had selfishly discarded that for InuYasha. She had heard the rumours of what people said about InuYasha, that he had seduced Kikyo, he had forcefully impregnated her, which she found glee in. Happily shaming the half breed for tainting Kikyo. Miyuki glared, so she knew her father too, this woman held a grudge against her parents but she didn't know the reason. But what she did know, was that this woman insulting her mother angered her immensely. "You made a mess of my pet back there, little one" Tsubaki scowled, her snake curling around her hand, stroking the wound on its face delicately.
Miyuki shivered, so the snake had belonged to her, she had trained her shikigami to attack her, whether she would make it look like an accident or a warning. She had come here with the intention of hurting her as revenge on her parents "If… if you hate my parents so much, how come your such a coward?!" Miyuki snapped. A true priestess was brave, courageous and powerful, she fought with pride and put the wellbeing of those she protected first. This woman used underhanded and mean methods to accomplish her goals. Why come after her instead of facing her parents?
Tsubaki scowled, what a mouth this child had, speaking to her with such disrespect? She didn't deserve the power she was bestowed with, she didn't even know how to use it correctly. She must have gotten it from her father "Such impudence, a child like you could never become priestess with your dirty blood". No human, no villager, no monk, nobody would ever take her seriously, mocking her for attempting to become a priestess. A sacred figure with the duty of fighting demons. Suddenly, Tsubaki felt a chill run down her spine, fear filling her body, trembling, shaking, pure fear, as if she was walking through a living nightmare. A terrifying demonic aura formed in the air, as if smoke was choking her senses and blinding her vision. The woods went silent, not a sound to be heard, a low growling in the distance as footsteps formed, the wind dying nearly instantly. She felt a presence behind her and flinched, turning instantly. Miyuki's eyes widened in fear and relief, she felt like crying all over again but she repressed it. Merely gazing at her saviour with relief and happiness. A silver-haired demon, eyes as gold as Inuyasha's stood behind Tsubaki, glaring down at her with impatience and anger. Tsubaki held her ground "Who… who dares?" she babbled.
Sesshoumaru peered at Miyuki, she was unharmed, but he smelled the fear on her, she had not expected this attack but he had. Both InuYasha and Kikyo had collected many enemies in their time, much like their father. Whatever enemies they had formed in the past would now come after Miyuki. He thought InuYasha would have known better given the number of people who held a grudge against their father had come after them. Taking in her appearance, the minor blood formed on her feet, she was shaking but safe. She had done well to harm that snake, though her power needed development, but she had time for that. Miyuki jumped to her feet, rushing towards him and hiding behind his leg, gripping his leg timidly, her hands shaking like a leaf. Burying her tearful eyes into the material of his clothes. Sesshoumaru reminded himself to scold her for approaching and touching him without permission, she was his elder and there was a food chain. Though in ways he couldn't deny he would become a mentor to her, he didn't wish to persistently babysit her. She was too young to understand the manners and behaviours of demons, however, decided he wouldn't punish her due to her panicked state. She had done well to protect herself, developing her power, wondering why InuYasha wasn't here to protect her.
"Lord Sesshoumaru, why are we in this mere village again? Are we observing your pitiful brother?" Jaken questioned, Sesshoumaru had sensed something while in another region, he explained he had felt an usual but polluted power. Something about Miyuki being troublesome and then had departed towards this village again without explanation, being a dutiful servant he followed.
Tsubaki blinked? Brother? Her mind attempting to process the information she had abruptly been given, her eyes widened in terror as reality smacked her in the face. This demon? This god? This lord of the demons, he was, this brat's uncle? He shared biological relations with not only Kikyo's offspring, but InuYasha too? How was this possible? What was the lineage of InuYasha's family? Sesshoumaru raised his hand, wrapping his clawed hand around Tsubaki's neck, cutting off her windpipe, glaring coldly at her. He didn't appreciate her causing him bother, nor did he appreciate her using curses on his niece. She was using cowardly methods to get revenge on his sister-in-law while using his niece as bait. She winced, her face warping into fear, unable to breathe, unable to move.
"Ouji-san?" Miyuki whimpered, she knew he was angry, that this woman attempting to hurt her had angered him. Perhaps he was even frustrated that she had been so careless as to put herself in harms way. But she didn't want him to kill her, she didn't want to see anyone else get hurt. He had done enough, she had learned her lesson. She was glad he came to her rescue, she was glad he was protecting her, but she just wanted to go home.
"What… how… you and this brat… related?" she choked out, if a Daiyokai of this power was this brats uncle, that meant her father was half Daiyokai. Meaning Kikyo's child was a far stronger quarter breed than the average demon. The power she would be capable of someday would be terrifying, albeit weaker than a full demon. In the demon world there was a hierarchy, DaiYokai being at the top of the chain, capable of taking humanoid form.
"Whatever petty squabble you have with my sister in law, I could care very little. However, hunting my niece and involving her in this is something I cannot ignore. You're enabling gossip which bothers me. You are to decease with your vendetta against Kikyo and my niece, understood?" he warned. Kikyo was a threat to be wary of, only becoming stronger after giving birth, fueled by her desire to protect her loved ones. Kikyo was not the type of person to involve herself in drama, gossiping about others or spreading rumours, tarnishing the reputation of others. Her heart was pure, which is why she was put in charge of the jewel. If Kikyo learned her rival made an attempt at her child, it was a death sentence. This woman was in over her head, while her powers were potent, they couldn't match what he had sensed from Kikyo. Causing a DaiYokai of his strength to feel even a sliver of fear was a feat to be respected. Angering Kikyo and threatening her child was a mistake she would regret, she was lucky to be alive. She was adding to the lie that Miyuki was weak, which would encourage attacks on the village. Miyuki had sensed her Shikigami almost instantly, dodging it and avoiding it, she could have killed it with her claws if she so wished, but her focus was deviated to running away. Miyuki was still learning at a year old to develop what powers were forming and she had a long way to go, getting into trouble was expected but so far it was harmless. If Miyuki came after Tsubaki after her powers had fully developed and she was a fully fledged priestess, she was in trouble.
Tsubaki nodded weakly, unable to summon the words to protest. Why was this demon threatening her? Involving himself in petty human matters which were meaningless to him? Surely he didn't love this brat, did he? Sesshoumaru squeezed, she was testing his patience with her hesitation, so long as they had an understanding he would allow her to live "Answer the question, I tire of this" he growled.
"Yes… yes….I promise" Tsubaki choked frantically.
Miyuki gazed up at her uncle with wide eyes, filled with fear and worry, she had never seen him so terrifying. His golden eyes had a red hue to them, his aura had changed. She couldn't help but feel a small shiver of fear in that moment, even if he was protecting her. Her eyes were glassy with tears, if she was to blink, they would pool over and pour down her face. Sesshoumaru saw the look in her eye, that human part of her, empathy, the blood she had inherited from her mother. He could never understand the weakness of humans, this woman had attempted to kill her but she didn't want her dead? He didn't wish to frighten her, otherwise it would cause InuYasha to pester him to no end about setting an example to Miyuki. On top of that it was a seed of trauma he would inflict on her young mind. He released his grip on Tsubaki, her body dropped to the floor, heaving and choking for air as she curled into a ball. "Miyuki, we are leaving" Sesshoumaru stated coldly, he didn't wish to linger in this place any longer, walking away into the distance. Miyuki scrambled after her uncle obediently, not wishing to anger him further.
Sesshoumaru walked towards the village silently, Miyuki following closely but keeping her distance, avoiding his gaze. Compared to InuYasha who would have been whining in the background and agitating him, he was relieved that she wasn't causing him any problems. He doubted she had intended this to happen, her carefree mind had merely wished to explore in which Tsubaki had taken advantage. Her peered at her from the corner of his eye, observing her, her eyes were still bright with tears and he could smell the salt. Her lip was wobbling but she sunk her fangs into her lip to withhold her sobs. They had become puffy and red, small sniffles escaping her lips and occasionally rubbing her eyes on her sleeve, she was crying. He contemplated the options of what was causing these feelings in her, was it out of shame that he had to save her, fear from what happened? Or embarrassment that she had needed rescuing. Flashbacks of the past flickering through his mind, this scene felt all too familiar. With this sulky behaviour, she resembled her father so much it hurt, the same attitude, the childish response of snapping, sulking and determination. But she refused to show she was crying as if she was worried she was annoying him. She was truly her fathers daughter, but in comparison to how InuYasha would have been bitching the entire time, Miyuki's mild mannered nature and awkwardness caused her to internalise her emotions. "You needn't hide your tears from me, I harbour no anger towards you" he relented.
Miyuki wiped her eyes, surprised he wasn't scolding her for what happened "But.." she protested in confusion.
"Your courage was admirable, you held your own and didn't recklessly jump into a fight, you have more common sense than your father at least" he huffed. She had held her own, thinking rationally of how to get away and listening to her senses. However, her demonic potential hadn't truly blossomed yet, compared to the feats she may someday be capable of.
Miyuki gripped her hands into balled fists, her eyes developing a sharper appearance, demonic slits forming instead of her human eyes. She didn't understand why all of this kept happening, one bad thing after another as if her family was being punished. "It's not fair, first auntie Kaede got hurt, now some scary evil lady tried to get her snake to eat me! And now your being mean to me because I couldn't fight her!" she sobbed. She couldn't help that she didn't have powers yet, but someday she would be more powerful than she was now. She wasn't weak, she wasn't stupid, she didn't know how to protect Kaede and she didn't know it was going to happen. She wished more than anything she could make things better, that she could stop the hurting, but she couldn't. That scary dark priestess had said that her mother threw away her destiny to give birth to her, acting like her papa and Miyuki were a burden. But Mama had never called her a burden, she said so many mean things and all of them were lies.
Sesshoumaru stopped in his tracks, this was newfound information that he found intriguing, wishing he had been informed of this sooner. Why had he not been warned that InuYasha was once again becoming involved in trouble, he still lacked common sense. His gaze averted to her, she was trembling again, but her appearance had drastically changed. Her powers were pouring out of her, the same power that villagers feared and her parents hoped for her to control and channel. This was her demonic blood, pure and untamed, instead of scolding her he sought to calm her. He knelt to face her, his golden eyes bearing into her golden brown orbs "Explain" he stated bluntly.
Miyuki wiped her eyes, staring back at him intensely "Mama was in a battle with some demons and Kaede tried to help, she was blindsided and shot an arrow at a demon, it pierced it but hit Kaede in the eye. She's hurt, she's blind. And now she's got a scar!" Miyuki sobbed. Though they hadn't attacked the village they had come close to the borders which is why they needed to protect it. Driving them off in order to prevent damage.
Sesshoumaru blinked, now everything made sense though he didn't understand how things had become so complicated in such a short period of time. It had been at least a month since he had seen his brother and met Miyuki for the first time. It seemed the village was attacked and Kaede had been injured, he could only imagine the guilt swarming Kikyo and his brother, no wonder Miyuki was so upset. "And that woman, the one chasing you?" he pressed. It seemed he would need to check in on the village more often that he liked, at least his demonic presence atop theirs would truly ward off attackers.
Miyuki's expression became confused and conflicted "She… she said…she knew mama like they were old friends. That she said I tainted mama, but she knew my parents…." she babbled. She had never seen that woman before in her life, her mother had never spoken of her. But she spoke of her mother so familiarly that they had clearly once been close. She couldn't think of why she would form such an intense hatred for her family, aside from her hatred of demons. She just hoped they never met again.
Sesshoumaru's gaze darkened, that woman knew Kikyo? Or at least was familiar with her, though while approaching he had heard most of the conversation, he hadn't heard much. He needed to have a chat with his sister in law, this would explain why she came after Miyuki. However, Miyuki would have drained half of her energy summoning her demonic blood, due to the fact she didn't know how to control it yet. If she hadn't calmed there was a chance she may have lost control and he would have to subdue her. "Have you calmed now?" he asked, her aura had settled, he smelled no fresh tears, her heartbeat had slowed. Miyuki blinked, "Will your tears and sullen behaviour decease?" he pressed. He didn't wish to tolerate her sulking the entire journey back for it would become tedious. Miyuki wiped her eyes and nodded, Sesshomaru sighed, got to his feet and continued walking, silently urging her to follow. But now he knew the truth, that woman had been someone from Kikyo's past, someone who bore a grudge and wished to take it out on his niece. He would need to warn her and keep a close eye on this Tsubaki woman. If she was willing to punish Miyuki due to her bitterness towards Kikyo, who knows how far she would go.
Miyuki and Sesshoumaru reached the edge of the village, watching the humans go about their carefree lives with boredom. The scent of animals nearby filled his senses, the filth and the stink, he could see why InuYasha would be content in a place like this, but what about Miyuki? Surely she was curious of the world around her and wished to travel, so why keep her trapped here instead of allowing her to explore with them? Miyuki hid behind her uncle, watching the other children play, her eyes wide with curiosity and yet hesitation, he'd seen InuYasha behave the same way. Their laughter and entertainment intriguing her, but her common sense telling her to stay away. No doubt due to her demon blood she was already being teased.
"Sesshoumaru!" an angered voice snapped, breaking the silence. What the hell was he doing with his daughter? Why had he come back? Just what business did he have this time? Did he think he was an incompetent father or did he just like pissing him off? He could protect his family just fine, this was his territory now and Sesshoumaru was breaking boundaries. He'd have thought he would have the common sense to stay away. It was as though he was itching for a fight which he would happily give. Sesshoumaru turned to see InuYasha glaring daggers at him, his fangs bared, ready to protect his daughter. While he respected InuYasha's primal nature to protect his mate and offspring. His anger was misdirected and problematic, which merely annoyed him.
"Daddy!" Miyuki cried eagerly, rushing past her uncle and straight into her fathers arms. Nuzzling against him affectionately to which InuYasha held her close, glaring daggers at his brother. He could see she had been crying, that her eyes were red and puffy, what the hell had he said to Miyuki to make her cry? He knew he would eventually turn on her and bully her. There really was no limit to how low he would stoop. It was bad enough he made him miserable growing up, putting him in his place and reminding him of how worthless he was. Now he had surely said the same to Miyuki.
Sesshomaru sighed, he wasn't in the mood for an argument, he had been babysitting for the afternoon "Good to see you again little brother" he mocked. Eventually he would need to teach Miyuki how to fight, how to hunt and how to channel her demonic aura. If she was ever going to use her fang to fight, she needed to control her powers first. InuYasha was supposed to be her mentor and yet he found himself running after his niece these days.
"Cut the crap Sesshoumaru, what are you doing with her?" he growled, he wanted answers and he wanted them now, he wasn't going to take any excuses. Why had he been snooping around again and what was the reason he visited? Last time he asked about Miyuki's abilities and made it clear of what would happen if she lost control. Now he just showed up after, pretending he gave a shit. He couldn't pretend to be family now, they may have shared blood but Sesshoumaru made it clear how much he hated him long ago. He merely tolerated him, but avoided him like the plague. Sesshoumaru may have been her uncle, but he didn't trust him.
"No papa! It's not like that, he didn't hurt me!" Miyuki protested, she understood why he was angry, but her uncle hadn't done anything wrong. He had protected her, he was kind to her, he comforted her after she cried. He scared away the scary lady who tried to hurt her, he walked her back to the village safely, he praised her bravery and even asked why she was crying. He had made sure she stopped crying and though a little grumpy he was kind to her, he wasn't as mean as papa made him out to be.
Sesshoumaru ignored InuYasha's rage to sigh impatiently, they had much to discuss and he didn't wish to waste time "Where is your mate?" he pressed
"What's it to you?" InuYasha huffed, Kikyo didn't like him anymore than he did, all of them were wary of him. She would be suspicious as to why he had visited again after all this time. It's not like he was a familiar face anyway. Sesshoumaru had been distant almost his whole life, from the moment he was born he treated him with disdain. Making sure he knew he was a burden, an eyesore and more. Why he was suddenly so curious after he found a mate and a family, he would never understand. He had no right to judge his choices.
Sesshoumaru's gaze darkened "Demons of the native region have heard the tale of your offspring and have taken an interest in her. Eager to test her powers or consume her, on top of that another priestess claiming to know your mate threatened Miyuki earlier today" he warned. Due to her being Touga's granddaughter it would gather interest, creating all forms of assumptions about her. They would flock to this village or attempt to lure her away. He would do well to keep guard and warn his wife of the dangers to come. InuYasha's expression altered to panic and confusion "She attempted to harm Miyuki using her shikigami to which she had the common sense to attack it. Had I not intervened, you may not have a daughter any longer" Sesshoumaru stated.
Miyuki stood forward "It's true papa, some scary lady in dark clothes sent her snake after me. Had Ouji-chan not protected me, she might have done something bad" she whimpered. He had no reason to be angry at her uncle, he had done something good, she didn't want them to fight. InuYasha softened, for all he hated Sesshoumaru, he was grateful for this. Though he would rather die than admit that to his smug face.
Sesshoumaru sat inside the hut, his legs folded and an expression of discomfort and irritability formed on his face, but he masked it under a blank expression. He like many demons had a dislike of humans, his life in comparison was not as brief or boring. However, he had some respect for his sister in law at least. Kaede sat nearby, her patch cold and gleaming, glaring at Sesshoumaru, InuYasha had Miyuki sat on his lap protectively, glaring at his brother while keeping his daughter close. All warning him what would happen if he stepped out of line. Kikyo sat opposite, her hands rested on her lap as she stared at Sesshoumaru with a conflicted yet thoughtful expression. She had offered him tea or some other form of beverage while he was here to be polite. He had accepted the tea which sat in front of him steaming, however he wasn't eager to share his thoughts. "InuYasha informed me you protected Miyuki from an old enemy of mine?" she pressed. She felt sick of what could have happened to her daughter had he not shielded her, she knew Miyuki liked to explore but they often accompanied her. This was the first time she had gone off on her own without their knowledge. She was merely relieved she had been returned home safely, merely with scraped feet.
"A woman, a fellow priestess, but one of the dark origins, indeed potent but not as dangerous as you" Sesshoumaru admitted. She had decided to teach herself of the dark arts of being a priestess, using her powers for evil rather than good. The shikigami that attacked Miyuki had belonged to her, meaning she used it to attack her victims. Had Miyuki not wounded it, she could have been severely injured. This woman sought to defeat Kikyo or at the very least best her, either way she wouldn't attack again so carelessly. Not if she cared for her life, especially after he warned her to stay away.
Kikyo sighed, of all people how could she not have predicted this "Tsubaki, I should have known she would attempt this" she growled. She had no idea where this rivalry began, though they had fought in battle together numerous times. She never had any close relations to Tsubaki, happily living her own life, but Tsubaki insisted on interfering in her life. Attacking her, taunting her, threatening her. Now she projected that petty jealousy towards her daughter, which she couldn't forgive.
"Tsubaki? Do you mean that woman that threatened you after you gave birth? The one who tried to curse you?" InuYasha snapped, the same woman who bore a grudge against Kikyo. He knew this woman had been part of Kikyo's past when they first met, she despised Kikyo for her innate powers and being placed in charge of the jewel. She resented her further after destroying it. Was she willing to go so far as to threaten their family for a power that no longer existed in the word? At least if Sesshoumaru threatened her she wouldn't be as stupid as to involve herself in their life.
Kikyo nodded, she wondered where this hatred in Tsubaki came from, when it began and how it had consumed her. She could use her powers for so much more but instead allowed them to corrupt her instead "The very same". She pitied that Tsubaki had allowed her darkness to consume her, the evil within her eating away at her soul. Had she been placed in charge of the jewel, she would have fallen prey to the corruption within.
"She attempted to attack Miyuki using her shikigami, however, she has inherited your common sense and was able to wound it. Whether it was spite or a warning, she meant Miyuki harm" Sesshoumaru stated. He was deeply impressed at Miyuki's ability to hold her own as well as she did, attempting to outrun the snake. But she could have been killed, due to her inexperience in battle. She was lucky he had been nearby or things could have taken a turn for the worse.
A look of anger and sadness formed on Kikyo's face "That witch…" she growled, using a petty move of threatening her child in order to gain her attention and get revenge. It was a low blow on Tsubaki's behalf and a decision she would greatly regret. Should they cross paths she would be sure to make Tsubaki aware of the consequences of her actions. Of what would happen if she threatened her daughter again. She bowed slightly before Sesshoumaru, he had done them a great favour and she couldn't thank him enough. "I am eternally grateful even if it was a whim, you protected Miyuki from a grave danger, you have my thanks" Kikyo responded calmly.
"If she has any common sense, she won't be showing her face around here in the near future" Sesshoumaru reflected.
InuYasha looked confused, there was more to this story than he was letting on which would explain why Miyuki defended him. He hadn't merely appeared while travelling, he had come here with intent. Which is why Jaken was in the corner sulking during this discussion "Sesshoumaru, did you?..." he babbled. There was no way in hell, had he protected Miyuki? This cold hearted bastard had threatened Tsubaki to stay away from Miyuki.
"Sesshoumaru Ouji-chan got all scary, he appeared out of nowhere before I could smell him. He strangled her and threatened her, then he walked me back to the village" Miyuki explained. His eyes had glowed nearly dark red, his aura changing and the low growl in his throat. If he had used his full power she would have been killed. She couldn't believe how cool he was. Was that what her grandpa had looked like too? Kaede smirked, a knowing look on her face, Sesshoumaru had been worried about his niece and protected her. Seems he was a softy underneath that cold exterior despite his protests. InuYasha stared in disbelief, his brother who infamously hated humans, he had gone out of his way to protect Miyuki. He had been kind to her. Was this a dream? Was this a nightmare? His brother had intentionally sought out Miyuki, saw she was in danger, threatened her attacker and then made sure she got home safely. If he wasn't such a bastard he would think he cared about her. It was hilarious.
Kikyo softened "I'm pleased to know you protected her, I do hope during your travels you were able to bond some. Miyuki is very curious of you and I'm sure she wishes to form a bond with you" she smiled knowingly. It seemed even Sesshoumaru had a heart despite his intent on proving otherwise, just like his father he had a soft spot. Maybe bonding with Miyuki would help him mature and express himself. He cared enough to make sure she returned to the village. He could have left her to fend for herself. In the short term, she admired her uncle and wanted to befriend him.
Sesshoumaru growled, his gaze intensifying, but he spoke not a word, he didn't know what this woman was assuming, he was merely keeping the child out of harm. He didn't wish to be coddled or insulted, he had no desire to be involved with every moment of their lives. "You'd be wise to keep a closer eye on her, she's becoming popular among the demon and priestess communities. I'm sure more will come after her in the future" he warned, getting to his feet and leaving. "I do hope that weapon you forged for her is coming along well, she'll need it someday" he stated, before leaving the hut. He had sacrificed one of his precious fangs for her, if it was misused he would not forgive InuYasha for his demands.
"Was he…. Embarrassed?" Kaede teased, she swore Sesshoumaru had blushed, avoiding his true feelings and sulking. InuYasha blinked, he didn't think it was possible but it felt like Kaede was right. Kikyo smiled, in many ways, the two brothers were very alike, though they were both equally as stubborn to admit it. Sesshoumaru like his brother felt emotions intensely, but reflected and expressed them through eye contact and his body language rather than verbally. The only emotions he showed on his face were negative, rather than positive. Using rational calculation rather than running head first into battle.
"Oi, Sesshoumaru!" InuYasha huffed, he may regret this but he owed Sesshoumaru for this and since Miyuki wanted to bond with him and Kikyo was grateful. They could put their rivalry on hold and try and act civil. It didn't change anything but it was the only way he could consider being respectful. He didn't expect Sesshoumaru to ever attempt a true brotherly relationship with him, nor did he delude himself into think he was capable of loving anyone other than himself. But he had protected Miyuki and he was protecting their family, which showed he wasn't entirely heartless. Only for tonight, this one rare occasion where he ignored common sense and held a truce, he would allow Sesshoumaru into his life. Sesshoumaru turned silently, raising his eyebrow to stare at his brother in confusion, wondering what InuYasha wished to complain about now. "Miyuki doesn't get to see you often, we don't have anything extravagant but Kikyo makes a decent stew. We can spare a bowl" he huffed. He doubted someone like Sesshoumaru would be caught dead in a situation such as this one. He'd probably sneer in disgust and mock him for making such a suggestion. If he rejected them, at least he could admit he tried to be hospitable.
Sesshoumaru hummed, Jaken would bitch that he was hungry eventually and he would rather not listen to Jaken's growling stomach for hours. It was a rare moment InuYasha showed manners towards him, given he was a lord. He wouldn't deny a free meal given to him, meaning he could hide out for a brief period. Then continue travelling "Very well, do you have any ingredients for this meal?" he asked. InuYasha had no knowledge of how to cook, he lacked the social etiquette for a Daiyokai and he lacked understanding of traditions. So he wondered how he was going to pull this off without assistance from his mate.
"Papa can get a pig" Miyuki blurted eagerly. Sesshoumaru blinked, indeed pigs held a delicious flesh that most demons enjoyed consuming, it seemed for all his flaws his brother was a capable hunter. He nodded in agreement and re-entered the hut, sitting down once again.
Sesshoumaru chewed the fish prepared by the fire, though he was used to eating far better quality hunt than this, it was edible and the taste was satisfying. He wouldn't complain to a free meal, during many political situations he had consumed food despite finding it repulsive to be respectful. He knew the sacrifices of political alliances. However, this food was indeed delicious and he hadn't tasted something this good for a while. Kikyo had also prepared stewed deer, the scent of herbs and spices was appealing, she had a balanced palette and knew how to properly season the food. Jaken sat by his side, eagerly chewing away at the fish with an eager expression, the small imp refused to reject the meal despite his dislike of his younger brother. Miyuki chewed away happily at her grilled fish, flesh and some oils formed around her mouth, her small fangs tearing through the meat. Being so young she needed the sustenance of food to grow, while also increasing her demonic abilities. Sustenance and balanced health was crucial for her at a time like this. A bowl of hot stew nearby. Kikyo wiped her daughter's face while enjoying her meal, her legs crossed as she tended to her guests, ever the dutiful host. Despite the tension in the air and any awkwardness between them, she hadn't shown discomfort once. Kaede glared at Sesshoumaru from over her bowl while eating her stew, warning him she was watching him. InuYasha ignored his brother, sat beside his mate and enjoyed his hunt. Sesshoumaru could sense he had a lot on his mind but for once kept his mouth shut as to not trigger an argument.
Sesshoumaru couldn't recall the last time he had eaten in company before, he had no time for companions or petty relations outside of political alliances. Though he owned his own castle, just like his mother and father before him, he rarely stayed there long. He had memories of before InuYasha was born, sitting with his mother and father in their palace, eating fine banquets, well-decorated mansion walls and watching the moon. The life that was written in human stories of how demons lived their lives in the heavens, watching over them. Though this meal was poorer quality than what he was used to, it was delicious. His father had taught him of politics, battle, training and other important matters, preparing him for arranged marriage, forming alliances, marking his territory and using strategies to his advantage. But this form of weakness, this state of normality, it wasn't a familiar sight to him. Yet his brother seemed so at peace, at home, where he belonged, despite his knowledge of the demon world, the tier food chain and other matters, he never involved himself. Comforted by this setting, Sesshoumaru wondered what his life had been like before Izayoi had passed, what it felt like to have that again. He could understand why InuYasha would wish to remain here, it reminded him of his past and he had always longed for a place to belong. Compared to the DaiYokai blood in Sesshoumaru that preferred battle and wandering.
"Is the soup good Ouji-chan?" Miyuki asked, staring at her uncle, he'd been spacing out, deep in reflective thought causing her curiosity to spike. Wasn't he hungry? Didn't he need to eat? Or maybe he didn't like her mothers cooking? He was so silent that it was hard to understand the inner workings of his mind.
Sesshoumaru blinked, he hadn't expected Miyuki to attempt conversation with him, he was adapted to eating in silence and enjoying his own thoughts. InuYasha wasn't wrong when he said she was eager to form a bond with him. He peered at Jaken who continued to stuff his face, ignorant of the mess he made. "Jaken is content with whatever meal you thrust at him, no matter the quality. However, this meal is satisfactory" he stated calmly. He wouldn't show impoliteness to his sister in law while under her roof and sharing a meal, no matter what tensions, disagreements and pet peeves he shared with his brother. InuYasha raised his eyebrow, that was the first time Sesshoumaru had given any form of compliment, he would need to remember this for the future.
"Damn right, Kikyo Onee-chan isn't just a medicinal genius, she's a great cook" Kaede stated proudly, the proud Sesshoumaru enjoying human food? Maybe he was softer than he cared to admit.
Kikyo hummed "I suppose a demon like yourself adapts to eating whatever is available when travelling, aside from what is prepared in your castle. The cuisine of humans must be very strange" she stated. Sesshoumaru was a Daiyokai, a lord and a hierarchy demon, he was used to the finer things in life, being treated as royalty. This commoner lifestyle was nothing like what he was used to. But in comparison to what herself and InuYasha had grown up with, it was like entering another world. But that didn't give him a free pass to insult her cooking or lifestyle. InuYasha snorted, Kikyo had just passively called Sesshoumaru a snob and he couldn't be prouder
Sesshoumaru stepped from the hut, the cold night wind brushing against his cheeks, his silvery hair flowing in the wind. The night was still, no scent of blood, no lurking demons or wicked presences in the village. Any nearby demons would sense him and immediately turn tail, no lower ranking beast would be stupid enough to test their luck. However, that didn't mean foolish humans wouldn't coincidentally cross his path, if another villager was to see him they would go into a panic assuming the village was under attack. He would rather avoid unnecessary human affairs fueled by delusional fear and ignorance, thinking with their rage first rather than common knowledge. He found himself more invested in InuYasha's life than he preferred but it seemed Miyuki was a target for attention. His father would be disappointed if he allowed their legacy to be tarnished and polluted by InuYasha's recklessness. She was eagerly exploring the village, learning of the world around her, learning to use some of her developing abilities, adapting to traumatic situations and trying to adjust. Her emotions were all over the place as shown by how angry she got earlier, enough for her demon blood to take over. Guilt for what happened to Kikyo's sister, despite being blameless, watching someone she loved become severely injured. The same way InuYasha watched his mother die as a child. An enemy from Kikyo's past had attempted to use Miyuki as an example, wishing to cause Kikyo pain as a payback for whatever humiliation was inflicted upon her. He sensed the curse coming from her body, mainly directed at her eye. Wondering what she had done to anger Kikyo to the point she was cursed in retaliation. No doubt she would keep her distance and yet still scheme revenge.
He had scolded Miyuki for her wandering off on her own, but holding her own against an enemy. She wasn't strong enough to take on enemies twice her size, her body wasn't strong enough to truly harness her power. Had she lost control of her powers and turned rabid, she could have done him some harm but only in a minor amount. But worse, her reputation in the village would only worsen, their views immediately targeting her as the enemy. Becoming the monster the mere humans of the village saw her as. For whatever reason, their bloodline attracted drama, so many tales, enemies, rivals, power hungry fools, all of them seemed to circulate around them like flies. Their father being a prolific warlord had gained numerous enemies while rising to power, so much that centuries later he was historic, legendary and respected. His stepmother had gone down as the woman who tamed the warlord, birthing InuYasha, the infamous Hanyou half brother of the eldest son of Touga. Touga had a fondness for humans, one that InuYasha had inherited thanks to his human blood. Demons that developed a sympathy for humans were rare and often ostracised from demons who hated humans. Sesshoumaru being the lord of the western lands destined to take his father's place, now InuYasha had mated with a priestess causing shame to their lineage but also conflict, which irritated him. Priestesses were seen as the enemy of demons above all, their powers allowing them to combat, seal and exorcise them. For a priestess to be part of his family line would only cause chaos and believe he was the enemy of other demons. Whatever InuYasha chose to do with his life was of his own will, but he would rather not become involved in the petty squabbles that followed.
"That priestess, she does make a good meal, though her home stinks of herbal medicine" Jaken hummed, he was surprised he hadn't passed out or been overwhelmed by it. InuYasha didn't seem bothered by it or even sickened by it, but then it was nothing in comparison to what demon slayers used. InuYasha truly acted more human than demon, which was rather fitting for him. Sesshoumaru ignored him, merely gazing into the distance reflectively, though he agreed with the strong scent of the herbs, compared to Jaken it barely affected him.
"Sesshoumaru Onii-san" a female voice responded sharply, she knew he wasn't one to linger, but she wished to confide in him before he departed. Sesshomaru turned his head curiously to see Kikyo standing in the doorway, her brown eyes sharp and cold in the moonlight. "I appreciate your visit, given your reputation for hating my kind. But it is a relief to know you are respectable enough to keep in contact. No matter your quarrels with InuYasha, whatever resentment you may have, you are still family, to him, my sister, to me and our child" Kikyo stated. She had accepted him as family, enough to refer to him with respect while acknowledging their relations. She knew he despised humans much like many demons, but she got the feeling he was slowly discarding this and developing an interest and affection for humans. Miyuki was his niece, albeit half but still related to him. She didn't expect him and InuYasha to get along anytime soon, all siblings had conflict and rivalry, them more than most. But he was still family, he always would be and that would never change. Whether he wished to be part of their lives consistently was his choice, but she hoped he considered it.
Sesshoumaru was impressed, so this is where Miyuki gained her intellect from "You are correct in my loathing of humans, but as my brother's chosen mate, I respect his choice. It seems both of you are fearless, otherwise, you wouldn't show such an attitude around me. As the lord of my father's lands and the current patriarch, I cannot abandon duties, including ones to my family" he sighed. He could never understand humans, their irrational fears, their territoriality despite being the inferior species, their pointless wars, their brief fleeting lives. But there were few humans he showed respect for, those who left an impact, Kikyo being one of those people.
Kikyo smirked, Sesshoumaru had just confessed he approved of her and admitted he tolerated her. Including his irritation that she wasn't afraid to confront him for being an asshole. But he was responsible enough to understand family matters. "So, I assume this means you will become a familiar face for the foreseeable future" she chuckled. He would be here when Miyuki came of age to inherit her blade, during her training at the temple, when her powers began to develop, when she began training to control her demon powers. They were moments Kikyo was sure her daughter would want her uncle to be part of.
Sesshoumaru frowned "Only until my niece learns to control her power and no longer becomes the subject of attention" he huffed. Leaping into the night, his figure outlined by the moon.
Kikyo watched him leave, sighing heavily "Good grief, it seems he's more stubborn than InuYasha" she reflected, the same stubbornness that InuYasha possessed, his older brother denied profusely.
